Drag and Drop - Incomplete Wireless Copying of Files

Ever since I upgraded to 10.6.4, I have a problem doing the "drag and drop" method of copying files wirelessly from my Mac to the HP MediaSmart server connected to my Apple AirPort N Base station.
I used to be able to simply copy files without problems from my FireWire CF card reader to the server fast and with no problems. After the upgrade, the wireless copying has become slow and the transfer is incomplete. For example today I tried to drag and drop 97 photo files and it only copied 30 of those files in random order. So I repeat the process over and over again (without replacing the already copied files) until all 97 files are copied. If I re-copy everything from scratch by over-writing existing copied files, it will only successfully copy a few files again.
If I copy direct from the card reader to the hard drive in my computer, the copying is lightning fast and with no problem.
If I copy from the computer hard drive to the server connected to the AirPort, the same inconsistent copying occurs.
So it's somewhere in the wireless link that has a problem.
The solution is to use the "Image Capture" app so that it will successfully copy all files from the card reader to the server. But as I mentioned the process is slow.
I have installed the latest Apple updates at the time they come out. I am at 10.6.5 and have the latest AirPort update that was recently released. I still have the same problem.
Anyone know about this problem? How do I report issues like this directly to Apple?
Thanks for any assistance and feedback.

I am having the same problem. I just bought a USB Hard-drive and was copying a 2.7 M folder from one HD to the USB and it leaves out like 15 files. I tried copying to the desktop and it does the same thing. I can open the folder, cmd-A, cmd-c, then paste and it took all the files. Very strange.

  • File drag and drop from java app to file system - Linux problem

    Hi all,
I am developing an application for files archiving, with a graphical user interface. The files are showed in a JList, and I implemented drag and drop feature for it. It works well for Windows platform, but not at all for Linux (Ubuntu).
Under Linux, file export with DND from the archive to file system does not work.
To extract a file with DND, we can't know the target destination folder, so I create a temp file (file extracted from the archive is wrote to OS tmp dir), and the system is expected to handle the DND action.
The temp file is correctly created (original data is well retrieved), but Ubuntu does not want to copy or move it via DND.
I get a system dialog window (while extracting file "test1") :
    Error while moving
There was an error getting information about "[tmp/60lp1t7egl/test1]".
Show more details > Operation not supported
    (Cancel, Skip all, Skip, Retry)
Can it be a rights problem ?
    Any idea ?
    Regards,
    Biibox

Until the 3rd party image editor developers provide us with the Photos extensions for using their app from within Photo we'll have to export to the Desktop, edit there in the apps and either import the new file into Photos or use it elsewhere.

  • Drag and drop not working when uploading file using safari

why i cannot drag and drop any file when using safari , and what happens the file auotmatically open while i need to upload it only , extra for that , i cannot write  any remark or fill a space while using website related to my work.
my work is to upload drawing files using dwf file to a website so the other parties can review and give me review , and then i reply to the remark at the same place and make meeting through the same site.
please any body can give any way to correct my mac.
latelly i installed win7 only to use it for that website , and iam now changing from mac to win whenever i want to work , this not acceptable to me because it is waste of time beside i like the mac and it working with other application but not for safari.

    why ?
I'm sorry, but every OS is different.  You cannot expect all features of one to be in another.  Or alternatively, for similar features, be done it the exact same way.
It looks to me after a quick google search that winexplorer is basically the moral equivalent of the mac's finder to present the file system in different ways.  The OSX Finder also has alternative views of the file system, i.e., icons, list, columns.  Experiment with the list and column views and see if one of them are more to your liking.
As for winexplorer on the mac.  I don't know if this simulates it or not but there is a program called Macintosh Explorer so check that out as well.
And finally, in the end, as I said in my earlier post, no matter what, nothing on the mac is going to change what I believe you think you can do and drop a file on a browser window and expect it to upload.

  • Drag and Drop: Moving or Copying when droping the item ?

    Hello,
I'm trying to use the drag and drop feature on a JTree. The problem is that depending on wether I'm moving or copying an item, I need to do something different when I'm dropping my item (I have some database id to generate if I'm copying). The only problem is that in the importData method of the TransferHandler Class, I do not have the information of wether I'm moving or copying my item.
I would need something like :
public boolean importData(JComponent component, Transferable t, int action); And I only have:
public boolean importData(JComponent component, Transferable t);Am I misunderstanding something with the drag and drop mechanism ?
Is there a solution to get this "action" information ?
I tried to subclass the DropTargetListener class of the TransferHandler, but I couldn't because of private attribute.
Does anybody has a clue ?

  • Alternative to Drag and Drop for "identity" copying cells?

    hi all.
right now when i want an "identity copy" of a single cell i do an equation where i enter the equals size and i click in the cell i need. this maintains a link with the original cell.
right now i need multiple cells (like five in a row) to get "identity copied" to a set of five new destination cells.
is there a way to do this so that i don't have to /drag/ the origination selection all the way down my spreadsheet or is this the only way to do it?
i have about 800 rows to travel and i have to do this about thirty times and it is going to get really tiresome.
i tried copy paste but it just entered five cells with "0.00" for some reason likely having to do with it being a copy of the format of the cell but not the actual content...
TIA for any advice or terms or search words etc

    HW,
It is time for you to download the manual and read the material in chapter six.
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#productivitysoftware
This manual is still usaeble for understanding how to select cell, reference cells and copy and paste.  If is free and downloadable AND you can search it-- if you know the terms to search.  It is a valuable tool.
when they are contiguous in both the source and destination, you can select the one, then copy, then select the grounp and paste.
In this example there are two tables:
    1) a source table
    2) s destination table
in the destination table highlight cell A1 then type the "=" (equal sign) :
now click the cell in the source table (A1):
Now hit the return key.  Select cell A1, copy.  Now select the whole table (or the group of cells you want to reference in the Source table).  In this example select all.  To select all use the menu item "Edit > Select All":
    Now paste:
If you only wanted to reference A1, A3, B4, B6, and B8 you would enter the formula in any cell you want-- I choose A1.  Then you select A1, copy, then hold the command key then click those cells, then paste:

  • Drag and drop copy can skip some files

I just got a new iMac with 10.5. I hooked up an external drive (USB) with a copy of my old G4 10.4 drive.
I have found that if I drag and drop a folder with many files inside to the new machine, most but not all of them get copied. For instance I dragged over my Corel drawer inside my documents drawer into my new machines documents drawer. Well it skipped about 30+ files out of about 500. It skipped one sub folder and other loose files. Once I figured out which files and folders it missed I was able to drag those over again and it worked.
This is really bad when you are dragging lots of files and trusting it to do them all. No errors or warnings popped up either. I initially noticed it because I was looking for a particular file that did not get copied, then I looked and saw that the # of files in the drawers was different from the original. Had to put old and new side by side to figure out what was missing.
Anybody heard of this or have a similar problem? Or better yet a solution?
    Thanks!

I am having the same problem. I just bought a USB Hard-drive and was copying a 2.7 M folder from one HD to the USB and it leaves out like 15 files. • IPhoto file creation date inconsistencies during drag and drop

I have noticed that if I drag and drop a photo from iPhoto to Finder, the file creation dates in Finder are inconsistent.
(This question is related to drag and drop only and not File->Export, which always uses the export date and timestamp for the file creation date and thus does not suit my needs).
TEST A -- If the EXIF DateTimeOriginated is 01/01/2013, and today's date is 03/03/2013, then:
In some cases when I drag a file to Finder, the EXIF date is used as the file modification/creation date in Finder
In some cases, today's date is used as the file modification/creation date in Finder
In some cases, a date in between the EXIF date and today's date is used
It appears that for case A1, these are files that do not have a modified copy.  That is, if you select the photo in iPhoto and then click "File" -> "Reveal In Finder", the "Modified File" choice will be greyed out.
For cases A2 & A3, iPhoto has inexplicably decided to create modified versions of these files either today or sometime in the past.
TEST B -- I have read that unexplained modifications are tied to the auto-rotate function in cameras, and it does seem to be the case when I performed the test below:
Select a large group of landscape format photos (these would not have been auto-rotated), then drag and drop to Finder.  The file creation dates are set to the EXIF date
Add some portrait photos to the group in (1).  Now the file creation date of ALL photos including the non auto-rotated photos are set to the current date
The behaviour in B2 is clearly wrong, since the landscape photos should be the same as in B1.  This is bug #1.
Furthermore, iPhoto appears to be inconsistent with when these modifications are made.  For example, I dragged & dropped an auto-rotated photo on 02/02/2013, then dragged & dropped it again today, then the file creation date in Finder (and also the date of the modified file in iPhoto, as shown in iPhoto File->Reveal In Finder->Modified File) can either the EXIF date (01/01/2013), the late of the last drag & drop (02/02/2013), or today's date (03/03/2013); there does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to this.  This is bug #2.
In any case, saying "you should never use drag & drop in iPhoto" (as I have read in some other forum posts) isn't a solution, because Apple should either (a) support this function correctly or (b) remove it altogether.  Furthermore, I regularly burn photos to disk for others so having the file date and timestamps correctly set to the EXIF date helps keeping the photos sorted in the directory listings for multiple OS, so File->Export isn't a solution.

File data is file data. Exif is photo data. A file is not a photo.  It's a container for a photo.
When you export you're not exporting a file. You're exporting a Photo. The medium of export is a new file. That file is created at the time of export, so that's its creation date. The Photo within that file is dated by the Exif.
There are apps that will modify the file date to match the Exif.
The variation you're seeing is likely due to the changes in how the iPhoto library works over the past few versions. Drag and drop is handy, but is not a substitute for exporting, nor intended to be.

  • Drag and Drop from Files panel

I am having trouble dragging JPG files from the Files panel
to insert in my pages. I have a number of pages created from the
same template and the ability to drag and drop an image from the
Files panel doesn't work for all pages.
Some pages let me drag the file across, other times I have to
use the Insert command and browse to select the file. Is there an
option that I've somehow turned off for these pages?
    Thanks.

    > Is there an option that I've somehow turned off for

I don't think so. What happens on those pages that fail? Do
    you get an
error? Do you just get nothing? Do you get the circle/slash
    cursor? Are
    you dropping onto non-editable turf?
Personally, I have never found the INSERT menu option to be
    too much
    trouble....

  • Why cant I drag and drop into playlists

I used to be able to drop and drag inrto playlists. Now I get a message which says press + button to add, but there seems no way of doing it. I'm using windows 7

Apple Support Communities updatesI’ve tried the control-I route and then tried to locate the file without success. What I get as a file location starts with //localhost/C:/Users. It may also be useful to know that most/all the missing files seem to have been copied from CDs. I can’t be sure if it’s all because the whole music file has nearly 9000 entries! The ones that still seem to work were copied from an external hard drive.

why cant I drag and drop into playlists
The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place. (In the case of a library moved from one system to another there are also potential permissions issues. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows if this might apply.)
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Although it says something like "use the same location" it expects to find the tracks in the same artist & album layout that it generates, not all in one big folder.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • Drag and drop issues.  I'm not alone.

So clearly I'm not the only one dealing with this, I've seen other topics with people running into this problem.
All of a sudden last night I was unable to drag and drop stuff around, copy and past, run a new program and I have no Spotlight. I've restarted Finder, the whole Mac, reset the PRAM, and even rand DU and repaired the disk. Nothing. Stil can't do stuff on it, and it's starting to get on my nerves.
Does anyone know of a solution to this? I've read many "temporary fixes" that haven't done anything for me.
    Thanks!

Create a new user and see if the problem exists with the new user. If not, then you most likely have a corrupted .plist or other file.
If the problem exists with the new user, then it's a deeper issue - more system related.
Your topic is a bit misleading - you have multiple issues - spotlight and the inability to run a new program. Is it possible that this new program is the problem?

  • "forcing" drag and drop to full finder window

i sometimes find myself needing to drag and drop (Move or Copy) a Folder from the Documents section of my macbookpro to somewhere on my MBP or my MacPro but the Finder window on the MBP for the destination is full up with folders and files and there is no "free space" to "drop" it. Sometimes I try to drop it to the right of the items list where it seems blank but if I don't get this just right it goes into a folder where I don't want it.
I know there is a file path at the bottom of the finder window but often this is hidden below my computer screen because I am trying to keep something else (like another finder window) above it. Also, I sometime am holding down the Option key during the drag and drop to force a move.
Is there a way to understand where I can drop items when the Finder is full or some other way to "force" it to drop in there even if the list is full up?
    TIA

If you drop the item on top of a file in the list, the item will be moved into the folder. However, if you drop it on top of a folder in the list, chances are the item will end up in that folder instead of the parent folder.
Here's a trick that works in Lion, and maybe earlier OS X versions, and should helpn with your issue -
Click the file you want to move; press Command-C
Open the folder you want to move it into. With that folder active, press Option-Command-V
This will move the file into the folder you opened.

  • Lightroom Drag and Drop

    Hallo,
ich verwalte meine Bilder bisher mit Elemetns 6. Ich möchte jedoch auf Lightroom 2 wechseln (Geschwindigkeit). Ich mache hauptsächlich Panorama und HDR. Also Bearbeitung in Externen Programmen.
    Lothar Alb

I dont want to drag and drop dnd, but the orginal files. I do picture mangagement (keywords etc.) not editing in lightroom, so I just want to use the pictures I managed in my catalog to use in indesign quickly. If you drag and trop something from .AI into photoshop for example it does work.
Illustrator and PS are both programs where the image you see has a 1:1 correspondence with an image file.
Since Lightroom is just using the paths of pictures it should be able to place pictures from lightroom into inDesign directly. Same as Bridge does.
In Bridge (as with all conventional digital asset managers), each thumbnail shown, reliably "maps" to a given digital asset in 1:1 correpondence
In order to access the asset that is referenced by a LR image, you can select "show in Explorer/Finder".
A normal OS folder window opens with that source file already highlighted. Dragging and dropping this into another program or folder, will lead to whatever outcome you would normally expect. Of course, dragging it onto another folder will move it in a way that disrupts LR's referencing of that, within its Catalog. But drag-drop operations that COPY this file or generate new referencing or versions based on that, should be safe in LR terms.
A "picture" seen in Lightroom, is not the same thing as a file, it is a virtual entity.
Dragging that thumbnail from one place to another inside LR may have the effect of adding collection membership to that image, or causing it to be included in a list of images to be exported, or whatever, and may also affect the original file's location if dragged onto a different folder.
This thumbnail may, though, merely represent one processing variation (Virtual Copy) that is sharing the use of an underlying file on disk, with another thumbnail(s).

  • Can no longer drag and drop anything

I've been searching the forums for an answer, but can't seem to find this topic. I can no longer drag and drop anything in the finder. I first noticed this when trying to drag and drop songs in iTunes to a playlist -- nothing would "drop."
Now I've noticed that I can't drag and drop anything anywhere. No files will drop to software, I can't drag files from one folder to another, nor can I drop files to a different hard drive.
This was all working fine yesterday, and I haven't made any changes to my system in the interim. All I've done is restart after discovering the problem, but that didn't fix anything.
    Any ideas?

Where have you looked? What did you use? Double-click on the boot volume's Desktop icon, CMD+J, select list view, click on Users triangle, then your username's triangle, then its Library triangle, then its Preferences triangle. In that folder is com.apple.finder.plist. It exists for all user accounts. Without it, your machine won't work.

  • Drag and Drop from LR to other applications

There was a thread going on D&D from LR to explorer.
The other appliation problem I have is the apparent inability to drag and drop from lightroom into a file transfer window (e.g., file upload with SmugMug).
The quick collection is an awesome way to organize a storyline of images from a shoot, select only the images needed, and prepare a shoot for upload. However, short of exporting to a folder first, is there a way to just drag and drop the file set from a LR view (filmstrip or thumbs) to another app? This would just be providing file handles, and I would be satisfied if it only grabbed the original images (pre-"develop").
Anyone have any luck with this?
    -- Jeff

No. And not likely anytime soon. Putting a Pointer/alias to SmugMug (if it is an uploader client app, not familiar with it) in the Export Actions Folder for Post Processing from Export is the best you can do at the monemt. To get LR rdits out of LR you have to Export. D&D just isn't going to do that for you.

  • Can't drag and drop in Lilghtroom

I'm using XP Pro. Duel core. 4 GB ram. Drag and drop works in every other program but not in Lightroom. I know at least one other person with the same problem. Adobe tech support didn't have any idea what to do.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    User Sort Order:
    In the case of
folders, you should be able to drag and drop files within
    any folder that
actually contains files. This should be obvious from the fact that the only time the
User Order option is available on the Sort menu is when you've selected a folder containing files. Anyway, it seems like some of you picked up on the Sort menu thing but didn't join up the remaining dots... Remember, changing the user sort order across folders using drag and drop would involve
moving the file from one folder to another. It's because moving is very likely not what you wanted that the restriction exists.
I think a lot of the confusion derives from the fact that Lightroom currently displays the contents of individual subfolders from higher level folders (i.e. flat view). Hopefully this will be resolved if/when we get the option to disable "flat view".
Collections don't have above restrictions because you're not actually moving the file.
BTW: there is no need to set the Sort Order before moving the files around
    Drag & Drop:
The Mac platform allows you to drag files into and out (Import and Export) of the Grid whereas the PC only supports dragging into the Grid (Import only). I'm still not sure why we have that distinction but it's been around from day one.
Hopefully above helps remove the confusion.
