Drag/Copy problems

Having some problems with Leopard (10.5.4 on a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook)
1. I cannot drag files anywhere at all (the icon will not move). I can, however, move files in terminal using mv. Drag works for highlighting but not for moving anything (can't drag images from web browser, can't rearrange icons in dock, can't drag in iTunes, etc).
2. I cannot copy/paste or cut/paste. Cut works, but paste doesn't. I've tried using keyboard shortcuts as well as using the menu.
I'm using an administrator account. I tried making a fresh user account but the problem existed there too.
To troubleshoot I've tried repairing permissions (it found some that were wrong and fixed them, but didn't solve the problem), and tried deleting .DS_store files using Onyx (and then restarting, or course). Neither had any effect. Ran Software Update but I'm all up to date.
The problems began after I adjusted the trackpad settings in System Preferences. I returned them to what they were before, but this didn't fix anything either.
Help? I'd like to avoid reinstalling the OS if possible...

Since a new user produced the same results, the problem is systemwide. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

yes, i can do that with this document to
   1. with the copy function from the file tab
   2. by selecting text and right click
   3. manually with ctrl+c
my problem is with the other publication, 'Nuwe Testament en Psalms'n

Drag copy in Remote Desktop 3.7.2

Drag coping a file from Remote Desktop Admin computer to Remote Desktop client does not work in remote desktop 3.7. It does work in the other direction. when dragging from client computer to admin computer. I have downgraded to 3.6.1 on my Mountain Lion computer to get this functionality back however the 3.6.x version is flakey at best running on Mountain Lion. Is this going to be fixed? I was excited to see the 3.7.2 version release today but was disappointed to find that drag copy still does not function properly.
I am not sure if this is the 3.7.x Remote Desktop Admin app that is malfunctioning or the 3.7.x ARD client agent that is at fault or a combination of both.
Drag copying is a vital function of ARD that I use all of the time.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Can't drag/copy attachments from Outlook into AIR application

I need to either drag or copy a file from an email in Outlook and then drop/paste it into my AIR application. I can do this with say Outlook and Windows Desktop no problem, but when it comes to AIR it doesn't work. The Clipboard.getData() method returns null when the "paste" event is triggered.

I know Microsoft Office 2011 is Mountain Lion compatible. In fact, Microsoft released updates to it right around the time of Mountain Lion's release to assure compatibility.
I do not believe Microsoft Office 2008 is Mountain Lion compatible.

OK, then try booting into safe mode. If the problem still persists then something is badly corrupted. I would suggest doing the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Scale and copy problem

hey I was wondering if anyone can help me, im trying to do a tutorial in a magazine and one portion of the work needs me to scale and copy using the command shift+alt problem is this doesnt work, the shift key alone does constrain the proportions and holding alt with shift contrains it from the centre point but it doesnt copy, holding alt alone does copy thou... this command doesnt work , I can do this using the scale tool but it the work needs to be very precise and the scale tool is more awkward cos i need to keep setting the point and its not always exactly the same... so basically why doesnt shift+alt constrain and copy a shape? any help would be great. my comp is new and dont have any bugs or other issues.. any help will be great! thanks

I've been using Illustrator since 1988. I have been an Adobe Certifed Expert in Illustrator since CS2. I can assure you you've either misunderstood the tutorial or the tutorial is simply wrong. (that does happen)
Dragging a transform handle with the Alt key will never result in a copy. Illustrator simply does not work that way. There's nothing wrong with your version. You are trying to do something Illustrator does not do.
You must use a dedicated tool (scale, rotate, skew, selection) in order for the Alt key to generate copies when dragging.
You can argue it all you want... but that's the answer. Sorry it's not the one you wanted to hear.

Unable to drag/copy photos out of iPhoto

I'm unable to drag many photos at a time out of iPhoto and into a new folder on my desktop. I used to be able to, but in the recent months this hasn't been working. Also, when I select all photos and copy them, not all of them seem to be copied. When pasting them into a new folder on my desktop, only about 90% of the photos actually appear, and I have to hunt down the ones that weren't copied and manually drag them in one by one.

There have been several reports of this issue over the lasy while, and we dont know if it's an OS or an iPhoto problem. There is no fix we know about at this time. The workaround is to use the File -> Export command.

Set the Kind to Current and you'll get exactly the same image you would with drag and drop - a preview of limited quality missing most of the metadata.

Iron Man 2 digital copy problem

I just purchased Iron Man 2 Blu-Ray with digital copy. Put the digital copy disk in my iMac. When prompted by iTunes I entered the code from the insert.
"This code has already been used. Each code may be used only once."
I've never had a problem with a digital copy import before. Is this a common problem? And who do I have to contact to try and prove that I just bought the disk and haven't used the code before?

If the launcher isn’t working properly for you, you can also copy the movie files directly from the DVD. They are located in the WMV folder on the Digital Copy disc. Double-clicking on the either file should launch a window to enter your authorization code, or to begin playback of the movie if you have already successfully entered it. You can also drag and drop the files to your hard disk in your folder of choice after you successfully authenticate them. They should play without needing the disc.

Weird copy problem

I'm trying to copy a file from the iMac to the MacBookPro. I mount the MacBook Pro without problems. I can see all the files. When I drag a file from the iMac to the MacBook Pro it askes me for my password (this started with Mountain Lion). Strange. So I put the password. Then it pops a message saying that "A newer item named “xxxx.xxx” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you’re moving?"
But there's no such file there! If I click Replace of Keep Both then it goes in a loop and copies the file non-stop. I have to relauch the finder to stop it.
Now If I want to do the opposite, copy from the MacBook Pro to the iMac everything is ok.
Any idea?

Thanks for your reply, dudes...Now I got the output..But i had one small doubt..Why these java soft people didnt write flush() method in predefined streams or readers or writers( say BufferedWriter or some other output stream).Because they're buffered. If they were auto-flushed they wouldn't be buffered.
Why they gave us a choice to write this flush() expilictly....?So that you can control when the buffer is flushed. For performance and transactional reasons.
Why wouldn't they have written in these predefined classes(say BufferedWriter) itself?? Because then they wouldn't be buffered. So there wouldn't be any point in them existing, or at least in having those names.
And another small doubt, when we write explicitly bw.close(), does this mean we are saying GC to collect this variable?No, it means flush and close the stream and release the associated file handle.
Can't GC collect this variable after complete execution of this program?Of course, but it's a file writer with a local buffer, so you should close it yourself, explicitly, when you have finished writing to it, so that you know that you've flushed and closed it, so that your application doesn't proceed on a false assumption, for example so you don't print any misleading messages saying that you've written all the data when you haven't.
If you don't want local buffering, don't use it. But then your tactic of reading and writing one character at a time is suddenly going to run several orders of magnitude more slowly. And it's still correct discipline to dispose of external resources immediately you've finished with them.

How do I stop fonts from changing when I drag/copy a text box to a new document?

I am using Mac OS X version 10.7.5 with CS6 version 8.0. When I create an ad in indesign and copy it or drag it onto another page (the finished layout page for a newspaper) Some of the fonts that are enabled in my suitcase, show as if they are not found when dragged to the new document. When i use "find font" and replace the "missing" font with the exact same one it was built with (in the other document) it comes in slightly different, and needs some adjusting. I deal with many ads and bringing them together to build many collective pages. How can I transfer my individual ad pages to my collective layout pages without having issues with font? I would like to still be able to edit the ad on the (collective) page, so placing a PDF or ID doc is not an option.
Please help! this is slowing down production and proving very frustrating!

Do you use styles in these ads? Same named styles inthe receiving document with different definitions (or same named styles with differnt defintions used as the basis for other styles) can cause this. Another possibility is moving an element from a file saved in a previous version of ID into a newer version document. Legacy text frames are not recomposed until you try to edit them.

Adobe Illustrator CS5 (ALT DRAG COPY) not working. Why and how do I fix it?

I click on the object I want to duplicate, then I click ALT (double duplicate arrows appear) and then select the object (double duplicate arrows disappear), then I drag and nothing duplicates or copies...all it does it move the object I was trying to copy. How do I fix this?

You may be lucky to have one of the easy ones at the top work.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

File copying problems

Copying some files using the Finder results in a dialogue box error message: "The Finder cannot complete the opeeration because some data in +(file name)+ could not be read or written. (Error code -36). The same files copy without error when using SilverKeeper (v.2.0.2) backup program.
I am also experiencing a problem when quitting SIlverKeeper. A second or so after selecting Quit, and after the program has actually quit, a system dialogue box appears saying that the program has unexpectedly quit and offering choices of Reopen, Report to Apple or Close.
The system also seems somewhat sluggish.
Can anyone offer suggestions?

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

Copy problems

I have a HP LaserJet M1319f MFP. The printer seems to work fine when printing from Word, etc. The problem is copying. One side of the paper put out is lighter than the other. Is it a problem I can fix? Like a new scanner light? Or what please?

That is very odd that printing from word seems ok, but the scanned print from the pc also seemed to have the same issue. Are you able to print a Demo page from the printer?
On the Printer press the setup button - use the left or right to highlight Reports, press OK, then highlight Demo Page and press OK. Please post the result from this.
This is starting to sound more like a toner low, and could be coincidence when it works.

HP Officejet 8610 copy problem second tray

Hi all,
I have purchased a HP Officejet 8610 for a couple off months. I have 2 trays and have the following problem. If I make a copy, I want that the printer take the second tray. I want this to set as default value.
When I go to the startpage of the printer (EWS) I can set that the default copy tray is tray 2. This works fine, until the printer is set off. When I set the printer back on, the setting is back too tray 1.
Have someone a solution? It's very annoying because the first tray is special paper....

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @Timoty ,
I read your post about how the tray selection for copies will revert back to tray one when you restart the printer.
I could be wrong however, maybe the printer is "disconnecting" and causing the change you selected to revert back to tray one as a default. I would suggest that you assign a static IP to ensure the connection holds the connection and could help in saving your preferences when you change them in the EWS.
