Drag & Drop & Copy and Paste

Before intalling Leopard I was able to drag jpegs out of safari and onto my desktop or find album artwork and drag it into itunes this feature seems to no longer work. Is there a setting somewhere I can change?
Also can no longer copy a URL and paste it into the ichat window to send to someone. Is there a problem related to this issue? Or is this something that I can change through some preference setting somewhere?

That should still be supported. I can drag any image from Safari to the desktop to download it, and then use that image as album cover art. Where are the problems in this for you?
I havent used iChat for years now, but I'd expect that feature should work. Can you cut and paste in word processing applications? How about in simple apps that came with Leopard, such as TextEdit?
If for some reason the copy/paste commands (maybe the clipboard itself) are governed by a configuration file, and that file is locked or has incorrect permissions, that could be impeding the copy/paste process. You might run a permissions fix on the hard drive using "Disk Utility", which may clear up the problem.

Hi Denny, it sounds like LaunchServices. You can download OnyX and use it to reset LaunchServices, or do it manually, by quitting any open apps then
navigate to /library/caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxxx.csstore. You may have more than one with different negative numbers. Delete all of these.
Then navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and delete this also.
Then log out and back in. Or restart. Let us know.

Burning DVD, can't drag or copy and paste items, all I get is an alias -mbp

Just upgraded to Leopard, am I being dumb?
When I drag items to a blank DVD or copy from the HD and paste to the DVD all I get is an alias version of the files??
I have found if I hold down "alt" it copies the actual files... is there a way of swapping this as who wants to burn a disc of alias's??

Actually ever since Tiger there has been a change to "burn folders" which show an alias when you drag items to a mounted blank disk. Prior to Tiger the system would indeed make a copy of items to be burned, then after burning you recovered the disk space. Starting with Tiger this was changed, the alias is used and when you burn the disk the system uses the alias and burns the original to the disk. The only thing to be aware of that can cause a problem is if you find you have more "stuff" in the burn folder than space on the blank disk, and open the alias in the burn folder to trash some files--you are, of course, trashing your originals. So don't do that! Move some stuff to the Desktop or another folder to reduce the size.

Yesterday my MacBook Pro was working fine. Today I cannot drag files or cut and paste. I have rebooted and repaired permissions. Nothing!
i did trash some files late last night, but thought they were jpegs and quictimes.
Any fresh help?

I think I know what I did....my external hard drive has been used to back up my PC. I was trying to back up my iTunes on my Mac. I forgot that the formats mattered. Thanks.

I want to take a voice memo off my iPhone, put it into iTunes Library and convert it to an .mp3. How do I get the voice memos from my phone? I can't seem to move them out of the Devices folder, no matter how much I try to copy and paste or drag and drop

I want to take a voice memo off my iPhone, turn it into and .mp3, and email it. My iPhone shows up under "Devices" in my iTunes but doesn't allow me to move the voice memo files I see sitting there into my Library no matter how much copying and pasting or dragging and dropping I try to do.
Also, I need to convert the file to an .mp3.
How come no voice memo files show up when I go into my iPhone via My Computer? All it shows are the videos and pictures in the DCIM folder, but not the voice memos. Is there another way to access the voice memos other than through iTunes?

Email it to yourself, then save the file and then see if you can convert it to MP3.

Can't drag and drop nor copy and past with iMac with OS 10.8.1. Not with iTunes, MS Word, nor Pages. No where. Reboot or relogging in helps for about an hour. Hard reset worked for a short time. Per Apple support, most likely will reinstall the operation system. Just wondered if anybody else has run into this. Did a disk scan, and that was fine. And did rebooting, holding down CMD+OPT+R, and P.. Deleted all the start up programs. Checked the internet, no solutions there. So it all appears to be OS redo time.

I removed the NextDef plug in over 24 hours ago, restarted and haven't had a single issue with drag and drop or cut and paste since.

It is as simmple as the title. I can not drag and drop icons or text or folders. Nothing. As for cut, copy, and paste they do not work either. I am trying to back up my files so I can do a clean install of snow leopard. I have leopard currently.

So Copy/Paste, etc. isn't working in say Text Edit?

NTFS is your problem.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.

Can't Copy and Paste or Drag and Drop

I can't copy and paste, drag and drop, or use spotlight on my macbook purchased in 2007 running mac os x 10.5.8.
I noticed the problem when using serato scratch live initially because it wouldn't let me drag and drop the songs in to cue. I was able to use the key board short cuts and moved on. I then tried to clear some items from my desk top to the trash can and was unable to drag them. I was able to open the desk top in the finder and use the file, move to trash option. The problem became unbearable when I was reorganizing a word document and could not cut and paste within the document. The commands did not work from edit either. I have found that I am able to cut but not paste in the mean time.
A user kindly pointed me to a link using the terminal to see if I had a tmp folder. I did but the date was from October of 2007 which is around when I bought the machine. I have run repair permissions from disk utitilty as suggested in yet another forum to no avail...hence reposting with my specific symptoms?!?
Short of reinstalling mac os x, what are my options DOC?

In the Finder do a Get Info on the Folder you're trying to save to, what rights does it say?
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?

I am having the same issue, however when I try to do this- Finder is "flashing". I am able to select Finder to force quit but the second I move my cursor to press force quit, Finder begins flashing again and deselects.

Hi Bruce,
You can create a Graphic Style.
Select and drag an object with the appearance you want to the Graphic Style Panel.
Then simply click objects and click the style in the Graphic Styles Panel.

I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
This is the problem:
The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?
Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?

No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
(In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.
