Drag  highlighted files in Finder?

After highlighting several files in Finder for dragging to another folder, the highlighting disappears when I click on the group to drag it. I can drag files one at a time, but that's impractical. How can I get the highlighting to remain so I can drag the whole bunch to a different folder? Thanks.

Thanks, Dennis. I was clicking in the highlighted area, just not "on" the file. As soon as I clicked, all the highlighting disappeared (except on the one I was clicking). Putting cursor right on the little file icon and clicking saved the highlighting and dragging was possible. Kind of strange, but now I know what to do. Many thanks.

This problem appears after opening 4 a 5 files, rebooting helps another 4 a 5 times and appears again.

I'd recommend reposting in the Boot Camp forum, that is where the Boot Camp and Windows gurus hang out.
    Good luck.

  • Why can't I drag my files in finder to an external hard drive?

I'm trying to drag my files from finder to an external hard drive--I just get the universal "do not" symbol.  How do I do this?

1.youd need a program like PARAGON to write to a NTFS drive from your Mac.
    2. IF you can offload that data onto your PC or other computer, THEN format same in Mac OSX extended journaled, you can just drag and drop files to it.
    3. To show the HD on desktop go to Finder > preferences > General > check on "external disks" and "hard disks"
    4. The "EASY" option really is to get another HD for use with your Mac, unless of course you need specific files off that drive ON your Mac.
$70 for a good cheap quality 1TB external USB HD.
    5.  FAT32 and (better option>) EXFAT can read/write to BOTH Mac and PC   (however time machine will not use either)
    6. See mac format below, HFS+ i.e. "mac osx extended journaled"
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • Can No Longer Drag JPG files From Finder Directly Into .fla Stage?

For the past six months I have been following a manual process to convert JPG files (exported from InDesign) into SWF files for display advertising assets.
Using pre-built FLA files as templates (configured with clicktags):
Open FLA templates (3 separate files for 3 IAB ad sizes)
Drag JPG from Finder directly into stage of FLA file, aligned to
Publish to output folder for renaming
Today, for no apparent reason, I can no longer drag anything into the stage of any FLA file.  Not just the pre-built templates.  Nothing will drag & drop into an FLA stage.
    What I have tried:
    Restarted Mac
    Reset Flash preferences
What I know I can still do:
Drag files from Finder into the Library, and drag into FLA stage from there
    "File > Import to Stage..."
This works but because of my naming convention it prompts to import them all each time because Flash sees the sequence
This is not another step I am willing to contend with for my manual workflow
Me and my creative team need to process hundreds of assets like this each week, so I'm very anxious to discover why functionality that was working, suddenly stopped.
    Running:
    MacBookPro Retina OS X 10.8.5
    Flash CS6 v. 12.0.2.529

just want to add my annoyance to the pile here. I can't see any logic behind removing the drag and drop function, especially when adding a new folder is now a multi-step process that is far from obvious. to start a new playlist with local folder content you now need to:enter settingsclick into advanced settings (basically all settings now seem to be "advanced"?)manually find and add the foldergo through the adventure of finding the files in your library.
-- because they may or may not be listed under "local files" - you won't know because Ctrl+F is also removed. so you have to remember/know what the album you added is called and search for that. if you have a mixed bag of file names from various albums, you're basically shafted; there's no way to find them all with a single search.then you can add them to playlisteta: but wait! there's more! if you have more than 15 files? you're **bleep** out of luck, because the search will only display the first 15 hits among your local files, and then show you spotify library tracks.I can't help but feel as though spotify is doing everything they can to stop us using spotify to listen to local files, as bugs that make it more or less impossible persist through multiple versions - and now features that seem to me to be basic functionality are being removed?mega minus points from someone who's been using spotify since 2008.

  • Dragging a file onto finder in Mountain Lion

    Hi there,
I am asking this question here because there isn't a Mountain Lion section yet. When I drag a file onto the finder icon in the dock I used to get a pop up finder window where I was able to navigate to other maps to find the right destination for my file. In Mountain Lion this is no longer the case and when I drag a file onto the icon I get the shaded background image because I don't have a finder window open already (this wasn't necessary in previous versions). I was wondering if there are more people experiencing this problem and if someone knows how to fix it? Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards

I read somewhere that this feature was taken out which kinda ***** since I used it quite a bit. Anyway, it still works from the Trash icon and you can just drag it to whichever place you want it to go on the sidebar.

  • Why can I no longer drag a .eps file from finder into a slide to embed the image?

I have always been able to embed a .eps file into a Keynote presentation by dragging the file from Finder onto a slide. This no longer seems to work in Keynote 6.1 in Maverick 10.9.1

This is a complete deal breaker for me. The main reason I was using keynote was that I could write equations on latex and drag them directly as eps images to the slides. I can still do it if I export them as png or jpg, but the aesthetic result is subpar. Any idea of when is this going to be restored in keynote? Thanks!

  • Files dragged or added to Finder not staying put

In OSX Lion when I drag a file to the Finder side bar I cannot drop it there. If I highlight a file in a finder window and add to the side bar using Command-T it will be added under Favorites but will have disappeared next time the Finder is opened. How do I fix this please?

In OSX Lion when I drag a file to the Finder side bar I cannot drop it there.
Hold down the Command key while dragging the file, and you can add it to the Favorites section of the Sidebar.
You can also add applications to the sidebar's Favorites, but you need to hold down both Command and Option while dragging the icon to the Sidebar in order to do so.
I have not noticed that an added item (file or application) auto-disappears from the Sidebar. Not sure what you mean by "next time the Finder is opened" - do you mean opening a folder?

  • Does mac have an app that graphically finds & highlights file icons?

Does mac have an app that graphically finds & highlights file icons (especially on the desktop)?
This used to be available as a 3rd party app on older systems but I haven't seen it currently.
Sherlock just finds locations as a listing.

The easiest way is to use iPhoto, just drag the picture in to it. To resize it select the picture and in the menu bar "FILE - EXPORT". You can preform basic editing and corrections by double clicking on the picture.

  • Finder. Dragging a file into a folder I get inside that folder.

When dragging a file into a folder I get inside that folder instead of staying in the original location. Why?
This may sound a bit stupid but it did not use to happen before and it's annoying when you are cleaning up a folder and just want to drag and drop some files into different folder and don't want to get into each folder.
I have tried into finder configurations and nothing.
    Any ideas?

If you hover hesitantly over a folder during a drag/drop maneuver, the folder will open, rather than just receive the files. The instant that the folder gets that grey background box, release the dragged objects. Practice.

You can't do that. It doesn't work, so you have to drag to a window, not the icon

I am finding the if I try to drag a file to the desktop, it seems to move the icon there, but then freezes up... you can't do anything with finder at all..? I go up to "Force Quit" and select to "Relaunch" Finder, and it resumes normal operation... My work around is to copy and paste things onto the desktop, them trash the original file... a poor solution, but I'm getting by.. any ideas??  Dave

    I appreciate the update DJ.
Next I would verify and repair the startup disk using the Disk Utility. This resource should help you do that, named:
Repair a disk - Disk Utility Help
Print this help page so you can refer to it later. (You don’t have access to Disk Utility Help when you restart your computer in the next step.)
In the Disk Utility Help window, click the Share button , then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts and you hear the startup chime, hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
When the Apple logo appears, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, then click Continue.
In the sidebar, select the disk or partition you want to repair.
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back up your data and replace the disk. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done. Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following.
If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. You need to check each file in the list of affected files. Most of the files in the list have aliases in a DamagedFiles folder at the top level of your disk.
If you can replace a file or re-create it, delete it.
If it contains information you need, open it and examine its data to make sure it hasn’t been corrupted.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall OS X, then restore your backed-up data.
If the issue is not resolved, I would next re-install Yosemite. This will not compromise your data:
Reinstall OS X - Mac Help

  • Cannot drag and drop files in Finder on Yosemite 10.10

This is basically exactly as it sounds. I just discovered that I can't drag and drop files in the Finder anymore for some reason. I've restarted 3 or 4 times since upgrading, and I've reset the SMC and PRAM already. Because of this, I can't update an application I'd like to. Copying the application does not work either; the paste option is greyed out  It's not just applications; click-and-drag and three-finger drag simply don't drag the file. It is not happening invisibly either; going through the motions and dropping the file on Applications yields no result.
I searched the Web for this but didn't find anything similar for Yosemite. If anyone has a suggestion or the same problem, I would love to hear it.

For two days I tried everything I could to get the drag and drop to start working again in Yosemite on my MacBook Pro Retina. I even re-installed the OS via Disk Recovery. I wound up at the Apple Store where they couldn’t find the bug either, but we did the following and I am back up and running. There is a bit of a downside, so please read all the way through.
I have no idea if this will help you, but if you log in under a GUEST account and this drag and drop issue is NOT there - then try this. For whatever reason this bug was localized to just my single user settings Library. The GUEST account could drag and drop fine. Weird. Anyway, here’s what we did at the Apple Store that has kept me up and running….
    Create a new user
Logout (deactivates the busted user library) and then login as that new user.
Enable Root User (superuser) while logged in under this new user. YouTube has some 1min. videos on how to do this.
Navigate to the Library (which is usually invisible) listed under your original admin user account.
Rename this folder. I just added ORIGINAL to it.
Also, create an alias for this folder and leave it there.
Go turn off Root User and log out.
Now, when you log back in under your usual User Acct. the system can’t find the Library system folder (because you renamed it) so it creates a fresh one. This new Library folder will still be invisible to you, but should work.
This fixed my drag and drop problem.
What this does though is kill all of your plists, saved website passwords, bookmarks, application settings, etc. for everything. I mean everything. Which kind of stinks.
This is why we created the alias in Step 05, click on it and you can open your ORIGINAL Library folder and drag out the files as you need them. I guess one day I'll drag over the one setting that borked my machine, but I haven't found it yet.
This is certainly not ideal and may not even be the best solution. But it got me up and running with no loss of files, just slows me down as I have to re-populate all my log-ins, etc.
Hopefully someone will come up with a better fix or patch.
    Hope this helps.
