Drag & drop to ext drive for backup; "insufficient privileges" error

I tried this in the Time Machine forum but I think this is a better forum.
I backup monthly to an external drive by dragging my Home folder to the ext drive & overwriting the prior month's data. About every other time, after it reads the # of files to copy over, I get a window that says:
The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.
I'm the Administrator and I'm backing up the main/admin home folder. When I dig deeper to troubleshoot the problem "items", it's always the same. It starts backing up the subfolders in Library, then when it gets to "MIDI Drivers" (which is empty on the original Home folder), it stops and doesn't copy anything after it. The next subfolder is "Plugins", which has three more subfolders inside, all of which are also always empty.
Why does it keep hanging up on these subfolders? When I narrow it down and copy them over one by one, they copy with no problem, but for some reason it always hangs on these subfolders.
Incidentally, I don't add much data in the course of a month so the monthly backup is fine; my ext drive is noisy so I don't like to keep it on 24/7; it's a hassle to plug & unplug the drive from the Macbook whenever I want to move around the house; and if it wasn't for the error message, the drag & drop is about as simple as it can get for me.
Any ideas?

If this isn't happening with a specific application, then you might try the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

    When I try to drag and drop my photos in iPhoto to an external drive (for backup or to transfer them to my other Mac) only some will transfer.  If I copy and paste, the same thing happens.  The photos are all taken with the same camera, but some will not transfer.  It tells me right away - for example, I'll "grab" 3500 photos to drag and move, and the red ball will tell me it's moving 3256 or something.  If I use the copy function instead - copy 3500 photos, it will show in Finder that I can paste 3256 or whatever. This happens on my iMac as well as my MacBook Pro.  It started recently and I've never had this before.  Any thoughts?  Thank you!

    Are you able to use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu to export  the photos into a folder on the EHD?

  • I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.  I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?

    I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.
    I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
    When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
    Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
    So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
    Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

    Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
    The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
    Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
    Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
    Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
    At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
    These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

    When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

    Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?

    Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    Click on the Add Library button,
    navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
    Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
    In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
    Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
    Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

    I bought an external hard drive for backups to use with Time Machine, but however when I try to connect it with the other windows laptop it doesn't work ? intact it doesn't work on any other device except my MAC ?

    Do not worry about it.
    Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
    You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Instead, get another external drive to do it or create a second partition on the external drive formatted in FAT32 by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html FAT32 can be read by Windows PCs

  • HT3275 I am using an external drive for backup. I am now getting a message that the drive needs a disk repair, but when I run disk repair it  just seems to freeze.

    I am using an external drive for back up. Yesterday the backup failed and I received a message that the external drive( a passport drive) needed a 'disk repair", when I ran disk repair nothing happened it seemed to freeze. Suggestions? should i simply erase the external drive and start over-my computer is fine.

    Get a different drive for backup.
    In the meantime, once you are backed up some drive safe, then you can attempt to repair the backup drive using the repair the directory link.

    I cannot load Maverick on my iMac HD.  It reports that my HD is used for Time Machine backups and will not load to that drive.  I do not use this drive for backups.  I use an external 1 TB WD My Book for backups as well as Super Duper Backups. Can anyone offer advice.   Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    You have got the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive. This is the folder used by Time Machine to save backups to, and the OS X Mavericks installer thought that your hard drive is being used to store Time Machine backups
    To fix this, open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
    Then, delete "Backups.backupdb" and empty the Trash. Finally, open the Mavericks installer from the Applications folder and follow the steps

  • Which external drive for backups?

    My brand new 21.5" iMac is on its way here today, and I've been told to buy an external drive for backups. Which I think is a great idea. However, my head's starting to hurt from all the info I'm reading here on the forum about WHICH one, Firewire cables, etc etc. The Rocstor 500GB has been recommended to me personally, but I've read about Lacie and a few other brands. I'm thinking it'd be best to get a 1T size. But WHICH HARD DRIVE SHOULD I GET? I don't wanna spend a lot of bucks!!!
    Plus I have a Firewire cable but how do I know if it's a 2 or a 4? I bought it when I migrated data from my Silver edition iMac to my G4 iMac back in 2004 or 2005.
    Thanks!

    Congratulations Sheryl on the new iMac.
    I recently replaced a G-4 tower with an iMac. The G-4 had a port for Firewire 400. The iMac came equipped with one Firewire 800 port a firewire cable and 4USB ports. I suspect that also applies to your new machine. In order to transfer files from one machine to the other using Firewire 400/800 I had to buy an adapter from the Apple store. Your help menu will explain how to set up the iMac as a target for the transfer.
    As to backup: I use Super Duper and over 8 years had backed up religiously to a Lacie external HD. About the time I needed to use it as a file transfer source to the iMac it quit.
    After much study and considering how Time Machine can eat up space I settled on the external hard drives described below - all were partitioned. The Drobo uses firewire 800 and 4 multiple internal hard drives. It is the place where time machine is backed up. The setup was about $600.
    The two lacie hard drives are USB 2.0 driven.
    I have learned the hard way that it pays to backup the backups.
    If I could only have one external hard drive and with all things considered I would opt for the 1TB Lacie Stark (about $125) that is USB driven.
    Sure hope this helps a bit. To help further we need to know more specifics about your need.

  • What external hard drives for backup are compatible with Yosemite?

    I have an early 2013 MBP Retina 15" and have installed Yosemite. I want to purchase an external hard drive for backup via Time Machine. I have read that Western Digital drives were associated with data loss with Mavericks; I do not know if that has been corrected. Has anyone backuped successfully on an external hard drive with Yosemite installed, and if so, can you let me and others know the brand and model. Many thanks.

    Understood.
    I don't receive any compensation for promoting any product from any computer, hard drive or computer peripheral manufacturer. I don't receive any compensation from any of those manufacturers or sellers for any reason. In fact I was not promoting any product, I was responding to the poster's query and was stating that I have observed the drives in use and working with the Mac OS.
    My workplace is a consumer of these items and we buy and use thousands of PCs, Macs, WD and non-WD drives, and so forth. I was providing information about whether WD drives work with Macs running various operating systems. I don't promote any particular brand, we use many different ones here.

    Internal versus External drive for Backup?
    Suggestions/comments as to the pros and cons of each approach.
    Looking at purely doing Clone of main drive.
    As a side thought I am noticing topics on issues with mounting drives. Does having the drive internal make this a non-issue?
    Thx in advance.

    If you use internal and the machine is stolen your backup is lost too.
    If it's for backing up for Business use, your insurers may insist on offsite storage, secure offsite storage that is of a backup or they wouldn't pay up.
    External is often good too because if you ever sent the machine in for repair and the fault(s) were mis-diagnosed and the engineers wiped the HD, they may wipe your backup too.
    That would be very unfortunate. At least with external it could be safe with you. Depending how important your backups are you can also 'Scale' your backup by adding more drives to backup to. So increasin odds of recovery at a later date.

  • First time using external hard drive for backup of computer....

    First time using external hard drive for backup of computer....it asks "Do do you want to erase disk?" In order to proceed, I have to say "yes" ... is that what I want to do? ...Seems like I'm skipping a step...

    To use Disk Utilities, attach the drive, open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities and then highlight the LaCie drive in the left panel of the DU window.  In the right panel, choose the Partition button top center of the pane.  Then decide how many partitions you want on the drive, one is just fine.
    Then choose the format, the default is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which is prefered.
    Then name the partition or drive.
    Then choose the partition table, the default is GUID which is prefered.
    Then Apply and you will get to confirm that you want to erase and format the drive.
    Quit DU and you are ready to go.

    You can clone the entire drive to the external, provided you have more space available on the external drive than the total of your used filespace on the main drive.
    Carbon Copy Cloner will perform the clone for you.

  • ORA-01031 insufficient privileges  error when selecting from a view

    OK I think this might be a dumb question but I can't figure it out:
    User John has been granted SELECT privilege (directly, not through a database role) to schema FRED.table1;
    User John can issue select * from FRED.table1; and it works just fine.
    User John has then been granted SELECT privilege (directly, not via a database role) to schema
    MARK.view1;
    MARK.view1 only selects from FRED.table1. No other tables are in the view1.
    Schema MARK can successfully query the views. SELECT * FROM VIEW1 returns results.
    I also checked the MARK schema to ensure that it has been granted SELECT on FRED.table1 directly which it has.
    Now, when logged into schema John, I try SELECT * FROM MARK.VIEW1; and I get ORA-01031 insufficient privileges error.
    I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. If John is granted SELECT ANY TABLE, it of course works but I don't want John to have that powerful priv.
    To recap, John has SELECT on both MARK.VIEW1 and the table which VIEW1 selects from (FRED.TABLE1).
    John can select from FRED.TABLE1 no problem but receives a privilege error even though John has SELECT on MARK.VIEW1.
    Any thoughts?
    Oh, Oracle EE 10.2.0.4

    Oh, Oracle EE 10.2.0.4Are you certain John has been granted select on Mark.view1 ? In order for that to work Mark would have to have been given select on Fred.table1 WITH GRANT OPTION ... otherwise the grant would fail and then John would not be able to select from the view because the grant was never successfully issued.
    Here's a basic test case (which i think conforms to what you've outlined) to get it working.

    drop user u2 cascade;
    drop user u3 cascade;
    create user u1 identified by u1;
    grant connect, resource to u1;
    create user u2 identified by u2;
    grant connect, resource, create view to u2;
    create user u3 identified by u3;
    grant connect, resource to u3;
    connect u1/u1@orcl
    create table test1 (col1 number);
    grant select on test1 to u2 with grant option; --> this is the important part
    grant select on test1 to u3;
    connect u2/u2@orcl
    create view test2 as select * from u1.test1;
    grant select on test2 to u3;
    connect u3/u3@orcl
    select * from u2.test2;
