Drag n drop clip to another location in timeline withOUT overwriting?

I want to move a clip from one spot to another but it always overwrites. i never get the right arrow, only the down arrow when moving clips within the timeline. I get the same thing when option clicking to copy and move as well...

YOu need to OPTION drag...pressing the OPTION key after you grab the clip. And then look for the arrow curving down.

Help with Basics! Dragging and dropping clips

Good Morning! I've been frustrating myself for weeks just trying to get started. I've uploaded all my video clips through a firewire connection and they look fine. However, when I simply want to drag and drop a clip into the timeline it doesn't work. I have tried it on both the clip and the timeline viewer and have tried cropped and uncroppd videos clips. HELP! I thought this was the easy part. I even have a book, video and online help, but everything says simply "drag and drop clip" Any help is welcome. Thanks! Quail

Maybe he could try deleting the iMovie preference files? Seems to fix some of the strangest of problems at times-do you agree?

Try deleting the imovie preference file. Locate a file named com.apple.imovie.plist and get rid of it. Then empty the trash, run a permissions repair with disk utility and restart. That should do it. The files you need to delete are found in:
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist

Gray thumbnails and can't drag and drop clips

I've been using iMovie 11 for a while now, and have accumulated more footage than my Mac HD can hold, so I migrated all my iMovie Events to an external HD. Everything still worked fine for several days after I moved the videos, but then a few days later, when I launched iMovie, all the clip thumbnails (Events and Projects) appear gray, a thumbnail only appearing wherever I leave the mouse, and I cannot drag and drop clips, neither from Events to Project, nor within a Project.
I've searched the web for answers and found things like deleting the cache and thumbnails so that iMovie regenerates them, or deleting the playlist file in the library, but none of these solutions worked.
I am in the middle of a big project so I would appreciate a solution that doesn't involve erasing all my stuff and starting again....

The external drive I'm using is a 2TB RAID connected by firewire and it is almost constantly in use, I am always able to access all sorts of files on it, including the videos, so I doubt that would be the problem. Nevertheless, I did as you suggest, but as expected, it made no difference.
In the meantime, I have also created a new iMovie Event and have started re-importing all the videos as a backup solution, but that will take a few days. The new event that I have created so far works normally though, the thumbnails appear and I can drag and drop clips. While I am at it, I will import these videos in to several Events rather than have all that footage in one Event, so if something goes wrong it won't be as problematic and it might even allow the identification of a clip which might be the cause of all this.
So right now I simultaneously have one Event (the new one I just created) which works perfectly, and the older Event which still doesn't work properly. So as a last resort I can probably also create a new Project and try and duplicate as much as possible from the one I am currently working on and hopefully that should work. However, if there is a quicker, less tedious solution, I'll gladly take it.

Can't Drag and drop clip to timeline anymore...???

Since recently, I can't drag and drop clips into the timeline nor to the preview window anymore!
All that happens is that the clip moves out of the viewer (it's like being in the preview window).
And when I choose adapt all, it actually fills the screen but only on some ( ?! ) clips...
I can insert/overwrite/etc using the F9-F12 short cuts. They work like they should.
I guess I changed some settings.... thanks for your input...

Check your update settings. Connect your iPod and click on it's icon in the iTunes source list (the narrow pane on the left). This will bring up the preferences tabs in the main pane on the right. The first tab you'll see is Summary, look for "manually manage songs and videos", if there is a check mark there then the iPod is set to update manually and you have to drag songs from the iTunes library to the iPod to load them on. If you want to update automatically you need to remove the check mark from there (I would also remove the "enable disk use" check mark unless you want to use the iPod as a removable storage device) and click the Apply button in the right hand corner:

Click on the chevron (the little triangle) to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the traditional song list.

CREATE/DROP synonyms in another user's schema without ANY privilege

What's the best way to enable a user to create/drop synonyms in another user's schema without doing any of the following?:
1) Granting CREATE/DROP ANY SYNONYM or CREATE/DROP PUBLIC SYNONYM to the synonym creator.
2) Logging in as the user that will own the synonym to create the synonym.
* Although option #2 might be ideal, it would require reworking a lot of code in our environment.
I thought about creating a stored procedure in the syn-owner's schema that issues the "CREATE SYNONYM" DDL command and then granting EXECUTE on this proc to the syn-creator -- but, it's my understanding that it's best to avoid putting DDL inside stored code.
Any ideas?

One clarification: the user from which the DBA's are planning to revoke the "ANY" privs is an account used internally by one of our ETL tools -- not a developer account. In fact, only the ETL tool itself and the DBA's can log into the account in TST/PRD (developers can log in with it in DEV). Even so, the DBA's still want to revoke "ANY" privs from ALL non-DBA accounts in ALL databases (including DEV). I kind of think that this is overkill, but then again, I don't make the rules here!
Anyhow, it seems that what we need here is the insight of a political scientist rather than that of a DBA. (not that your perspective is not valued!!)

IMovie '11 on 10.6.8 greys out contents of library, so I cannot drag and drop clips to timeline.

This has happened on multiple occasions. I don't know why Apple can't figure out how to create a reliable program. I have been using iMovie for several months now, updated to '11 in April, on OSX 10.6.8, and usually it works fine, but occasionally, out of the blue, all of the clips in my library will be greyed out. I cannot edit them in timeline unless I go to each clip individually and open up the separate editing window, I cannot drag and drop the clips to timeline, I have to manually copy and paste, and I cannot see any of the clips unless I roll over them with my mouse. My free trial of Final Cut Pro just expired and I have a couple of videos that are almost finished and this is extremely frustrating. I have seen others with similar experiences and I'm wondering if there is anything at all I can do about it. Thank you.
P.S. I did try restarting the program about 5 times and restarted my computer. Nothing gives.

Of course, I might have found a fix right after posting this. In case someone else comes along with the same issue...
I closed my MBP cover, and re-opened (this solved a menu bar issue I was also having). I re-opened iMovie, and deleted the project I had started that couldn't be continued. I started a new project, and things seemed to work just fine. So I'm not sure what it was that caused the problem, but so far it seems to be working now. Good luck!

Unable to drag and drop files into other locations

As I clicked on a music file to drag into my iTunes, it would not allow me to perform that action.
(I was able to click, drag, and drop a music file into iTunes a few seconds previously)
This happened all of a sudden. The same thing happens as I try to drag a file to the trash, etc.
What settings should I go into to see if everything is set correctly so I can re-perform the drag and drop action?
I've already went into my Preferences..general settings...and clicked spring-loaded files and windows.
Nothing changed once I un-clicked the box and re-clicked it.

Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
Run Repair Drive and Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in Recovery.
Restart
Download and run the combo updater to refresh your OS X files.

Drag and drop text from another application

There used to be a really nice feature of Mail that has disappeared. I was able to select text in another application, e.g., Pages or Word or Safari, and drop it onto the Mail icon in the dock. A new message window would open with that text in the body of the message. I can still do this with images from Safari but that seems to be about it. I cannot do this with text. Has there been a change in Mail that causes this changed behavior? Is the problem in my system or Mail.app? Or is it simply my memory (the neuro part not the silicon)? Any help would be appreciated (unless the last possibility explains the problem; then I'd like to hear about it, but I wouldn't appreciate it).

Jim, I forgot to mention that I encounter the problem whether Mail is open or closed. Also, I trashed the preferences file and created a new account with no effect. It still works with images and doesn't work with text. Strange. Jim

Timeline scrubber seems unresponsive. I drag it across clips in my bin and timeline and it seems to move by itself when I am not controlling it with the mouse

It seems to repeat the same motions i just made on the timeline for some reason.

Current Firefox versions have a feature called tear-off tabs.<br />
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.<br />
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

Why doesn't the original document I'm dragging and dropping from one folder to another move?
What's happening is the computer is creating a duplicte of the document and placing it in the new location with a new creation date. The original document I wanted to drag and drop into a new location remains where it started as the "original" document and the new copy has this little arrow protruding up from the lower left of its icon.
At first I thought it was an alias, but it's a copy of the document I thought I was dragging and dropping.
What gives here?

That arrow indicates it is a linik to the original, though. This happens if you wish to drag files, for which you do not have permissions to do this operation, e.g. from Library or System folder. I am pretty sure you do not accomplish this operation from/to folders like Desktop or Documents; if so, there is a problem with your system.

When I try to move a file by drag and drop to a folder location outside my window, I cannot do it. When I reach the bottom of the window, the display of files does not scroll any further. Now I drop into the lowest location, scroll up, find it, redeploy into the new lowest location, and continue in that manner. Is there a simpler way to move files from one location to another?

When you say "outside my window", do you mean a location that is scrolled off the bottom of the window? I'll also guess that you have that window set to "list" view.
When you want the window contents to scroll as you drag, try moving the mouse pointer up and down across the bottom of the displayed list. You may need to do this several times before the window contents start to scroll.
Here are three other approaches you might consider:
1) Open a second Finder window of the same folder. Position one window to show the source file and the other to show the intended destination folder. Then drag from one window to the other.
2) Use the FInder "column" view. The details will depend on just where the file is that you want to move.
3) If the file you want to move is on your local disk, move it out of its folder onto the Desktop. Scroll the window to show the destination folder, then move the file from the Desktop onto that folder.

Lightroom Drag and Drop

ich verwalte meine Bilder bisher mit Elemetns 6. Ich möchte jedoch auf Lightroom 2 wechseln (Geschwindigkeit). Ich mache hauptsächlich Panorama und HDR. Also Bearbeitung in Externen Programmen. Dazu markiere ich die benötigten Bilder (in der Regel 12-30)in Elements und ziehe diese per Maus in das andere Programm. Leider funktioniert dies in Lightroom nicht. Ich kann auch nur ein externes Programm einbinden. Bei mir ist dies Nikon Capture NX 2. Kann mir jemand sagen, wie ich in Lightroom die Bilder an andere programm per Mausziehen übergeben kann. Oder besteht die Möglichkeit weitere externe Programme einzubinden.

I dont want to drag and drop dnd, but the orginal files. I do picture mangagement (keywords etc.) not editing in lightroom, so I just want to use the pictures I managed in my catalog to use in indesign quickly. If you drag and trop something from .AI into photoshop for example it does work.
Illustrator and PS are both programs where the image you see has a 1:1 correspondence with an image file.
Since Lightroom is just using the paths of pictures it should be able to place pictures from lightroom into inDesign directly. Same as Bridge does.
In Bridge (as with all conventional digital asset managers), each thumbnail shown, reliably "maps" to a given digital asset in 1:1 correpondence
In order to access the asset that is referenced by a LR image, you can select "show in Explorer/Finder".
A normal OS folder window opens with that source file already highlighted. Dragging and dropping this into another program or folder, will lead to whatever outcome you would normally expect. Of course, dragging it onto another folder will move it in a way that disrupts LR's referencing of that, within its Catalog. But drag-drop operations that COPY this file or generate new referencing or versions based on that, should be safe in LR terms.
A "picture" seen in Lightroom, is not the same thing as a file, it is a virtual entity.
Dragging that thumbnail from one place to another inside LR may have the effect of adding collection membership to that image, or causing it to be included in a list of images to be exported, or whatever, and may also affect the original file's location if dragged onto a different folder.
This thumbnail may, though, merely represent one processing variation (Virtual Copy) that is sharing the use of an underlying file on disk, with another thumbnail(s).

After upgrade to Yosemite, drag and drop for files does not work, destination folder crashes.

After upgrading to Yosemite, dragging and dropping files from one location to the destination folder, causes the destination folder crash. However, copying the file and then moving it works fine.
I'm not sure where to report bugs, but I figured this would be the best option

Here's my first post, from my first Mac, on this forum in this great Apple world...
I'm working through Diana Weynand's FCP6 training book and have the following oddities:
1-drag and drop from the Browser to the timeline does not work. I can drag from the Viewer to the T/L, just not from Browser. Also, double clicking in the Browser no longer loads the clip into the Viewer...which it did the first couple hours.
2-working in the Timeline, I drag a video clip, but it's corresponding audio clip stays behind. Is there a way to link them, or should I use a different tool than the Select arrow?
3-No thumbnails either in the Browser or on the T/L, just a plus sign. No message about Offline or similar. Is Reconnecting the best remedy?
Also, MBP questions.
Is there no way to delete Right of the cursor, only the Delete key, moving Left?
How do I access/activate the NumPad key functions?--I could use a link to an MBP keyboard function tutorial.
Is there any driver or plugin to simulate a mousewheel on the touchpad? I miss it for zooming. This is a 1yr old 17" MBP with C2D 2.4GHz SantaRosa...
