I have been backing up iMovie 08 files to my external drive, but for some reason I can't open these files in iMovie.  I used drag and drop to copy them.

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

  • Drag and drop Files to native disk lazily

I need help on how to copy, through DnD, a file/attachment from an email application (http://columba.sf.net) to the native operating system. Theres no problem to drag and drop files that already resides on the file system, this Ive done without any problem.
The problem is that the attachment lies within the email, and it needs to be extracted before it can be copied to the correct location. For performance reasons I dont want to extract all attachments to the disk when the user opens an email with attachments. Neither do I want to extract the attachment during the user's DnD operation. I would like to make the copy/extraction when the DnD has been completed.
As Ive understood is that when I want to DnD a file to the desktop, I must have a Transferable that supports the DataFlavor javaFileListFlavor. This will return a List of Files by the getTransferData() method. But the problem is that the Files must exists on the diskdrive before it the DnD starts, ie before the getTransferData() method is called.
This I cannot do, since I the getTransferData() method is called multiple times during the DnD action, and I dont want to extract the attachment until the DnD is complete. (performance issues)
My first idea was to create an empty dummy file on the disk, and use this as the source File to be dragged around. Then when the DnD is completed, I would extract the attachment from the email and make the copy manually. Doing it this way, Im sure that
    * theres no unecessary extraction,
    * the user doesnt have to wait until he has choosen where to put the file
    * the extraction is done according to the API for the email client.
But as it seems now, theres no way of knowing the location of the drop target from the TransferHandler or the DataFlavor. And if I dont know the location of the drop, I cannot make the manual copy.
Do anyone know of a solution or workaround, using the new or old DnD implementation?
    ANy help is appreaciated!

Hi RedSolo! I've been working with the exact same problem for quite some time. I think your "workaround" in the frappucino module seems to be the best way to solve this problem. I have almost the same solution in my project. What I would like to do is to present a progressbar during the time it takes to wait for the "create files thread" to finish. But I haven't found a solution since I'm blocking the event thread. Do you have any tips or ideas how to solve this?
    Thankful for any ideas!!

  • I have 2 auxillary disk drives for my MacBokk Pro. Time Machine uses one for backup and I use the other for storage, but I am unable to create a new folder or drag and drop files or folders to the aux drive.

I am unable to create a new folder on either of my auxillary disk drives.  I can access the files and folders that were there when I transferred one of the drives from a PC.  Time machine uses one for backup and I want to use the other to store photos which are large files.  An help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.  If I reformat the drive will I be able to access the files on it from the MAC.  I do not share the drive with a PC.  The files were originally created on a PC which I no longer use.  I do want to continue to access the files put there by the PC.  I would like to not have to copy them over to the MAC hard drive just to use them.  The second aux drive is new and works fine because it was formatted by the MAC.  I can drag and drop files there and work with just as if they were on the internal drive.

  • Can't drag and drop files into Indesign.

My ability to dragon and drop files into InDesign has stopped. I also cannot copy and paste. I have tried dropping previously used jpg's and PDFs as well as copying text from Acrobat, Chrome and Word. I reset the prefrences with control option command shift, but still no luck - I can't drag and drop files. Also, I cannot move files with my mouse in the program.

Nobody can help you without system information. Could be anything from graphics driver issues to a defective mouse to a busted operating system...

  • I can't drag and drop files to playlist or to Shuffle.

I have iTunes 10.5, and I can't drag and drop files to playlists or to my shuffle.  For playlists, I have to right click and "add to playlist" and for shuffle, I have to copy song and paste it into shuffle.  Is anyone else having this problem? How can I fix it?

A lot of people are having this problem.  Most commonly, they are using a Wacom tablet, and sometimes updating its driver helps.  I don't have a Wacom, but still have the "can't drag" problem.  Here are the workarounds I have found in the forums so far...
    1. "gusto drag" -- slide the pointer across a song and click.
    2. clicking with both left and right mouse buttons.
    3. selecting items and do a "create playlist from selected". Then select the iPod and autofill from that playlist.

  • How to drag and drop files in Time Machine Capsule?

    Hi, all
I have recently bought a Time Machine 2 TB. I have backed up my MacBook Air over the Time Machine. I was trying to copy or drag and drop files in the time capsule, but it wont allow me. It Neither does allow me to create any new folders in the Airport Time Machine. If i try to drag and drop files in it, it says, click to Authenticate, however, there is no place or tab to authenticate. I am the administrator.
    Please advise.
    Thanks

It sounds like you are trying to copy / paste files to the Time Capsule Finder icon, when you should be copying / pasting to the drive on the Time Capsule, which is named "Data" unless you have changed it.
Open any Finder window and look for the Time Capsule icon under the Shared heading on the left side of the window
Click on the Time Capsule, which will display a folder to the right named Data, unless you have changed the name of the drive
Double-cllick on Data to mount the drive on the desktop
You can drag / drop or copy / paste files onto the drive icon, or open the drive and drag files into the open window.
The first time that you do this, you may be asked for the Time Capsule device or disk password.

  • Drag and Drop Files Onto Seagate External Hardrive

I can't seem to just drag and drop files I want to store on an external hardrive with Seagate. I hate that. I just want a simple drag and drop so I can free up some space on my computer. But Seagate just seems to just seems to say **** you, we're gonna do it backwards ***. Can someone please explain how to just drag and drop files? I have zero idea, and they don't make it simple to understand.
So for the love of god....please explain it to me (without use of computer terminology or telling me places I should go on my computer that I don't know what the **** they are. Renders your help useless, and it's frustrating because no matter how many times I ask this, you just give me help i can't understand anyway.)
    Please....it's not hard to ask.
If possible, use step by step instructions, if you need to tell me to go somewhere on my computer, tell me where that is too so I know where to go. Don't be vague, I can't understand vague instructions when i read them.

What is the drive formatted as? this is extremely likely the issue.
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • Cannot drag and drop files in Finder on Yosemite 10.10

This is basically exactly as it sounds. I just discovered that I can't drag and drop files in the Finder anymore for some reason. I've restarted 3 or 4 times since upgrading, and I've reset the SMC and PRAM already. Because of this, I can't update an application I'd like to. Copying the application does not work either; the paste option is greyed out  It's not just applications; click-and-drag and three-finger drag simply don't drag the file. It is not happening invisibly either; going through the motions and dropping the file on Applications yields no result.
I searched the Web for this but didn't find anything similar for Yosemite. If anyone has a suggestion or the same problem, I would love to hear it.

For two days I tried everything I could to get the drag and drop to start working again in Yosemite on my MacBook Pro Retina. I even re-installed the OS via Disk Recovery. I wound up at the Apple Store where they couldn’t find the bug either, but we did the following and I am back up and running. There is a bit of a downside, so please read all the way through.
I have no idea if this will help you, but if you log in under a GUEST account and this drag and drop issue is NOT there - then try this. For whatever reason this bug was localized to just my single user settings Library. The GUEST account could drag and drop fine. Weird. Anyway, here’s what we did at the Apple Store that has kept me up and running….
    Create a new user
Logout (deactivates the busted user library) and then login as that new user.
Enable Root User (superuser) while logged in under this new user. YouTube has some 1min. videos on how to do this.
Navigate to the Library (which is usually invisible) listed under your original admin user account.
Rename this folder. I just added ORIGINAL to it.
Also, create an alias for this folder and leave it there.
Go turn off Root User and log out.
Now, when you log back in under your usual User Acct. the system can’t find the Library system folder (because you renamed it) so it creates a fresh one. This new Library folder will still be invisible to you, but should work.
This fixed my drag and drop problem.
What this does though is kill all of your plists, saved website passwords, bookmarks, application settings, etc. for everything. I mean everything. Which kind of stinks.
This is why we created the alias in Step 05, click on it and you can open your ORIGINAL Library folder and drag out the files as you need them. I guess one day I'll drag over the one setting that borked my machine, but I haven't found it yet.
This is certainly not ideal and may not even be the best solution. But it got me up and running with no loss of files, just slows me down as I have to re-populate all my log-ins, etc.
Hopefully someone will come up with a better fix or patch.
    Hope this helps.

  • Drag and Drop files to upload snag

I am developing a Director projector application that uploads
a users local files to a server via an FTP Xtra. I would like to
have an icon on the desktop that the user can drag-and-drop files
onto and the application automatically uploads the files. I have
created a folder on the desktop and an application that poll it for
content to initiate the upload but the problem with this is that
the user, by dragging files to the folder, will unknowingly move
the files to "upload folder" and they will be removed from their
original locations. This is obviously not what anyone desires. I
would like to have the drag-and-drop trigger the upload from the
    file's current location.
One solution that I have implemented is using the "Drag &
Drop Xtra", from Meliora Software, and created a MIAW that looks
like a desktop folder icon. The problem with this is that the icon
is present only when the application is running and I can not keep
it pinned down to the desktop. When it is clicked-on it will come
to the front, like any other application. Is there a way to keep a
    MIAW pinned down?
Another POSSIBLE approach would be to place a shortcut to the
application on the desktop and when a file is dropped on it,
capture the file path and pass that along to the Director
application on startup. Is this possible? Is there an Xtra to do
this or does Director have this capability built in?
Ideally, we would like to have a folder on the desktop that
only allows copy-and-paste functionality to itself but that would
be an OS issue and out of the control of Director. Have any of you
created such an app? Any ideas are welcomed.
    Thanks in advance.

this approach won't work because every time a file is dropped
on the icon a new instance of the projector will run.
    To achieve that you need:
    1) A Director version prior to MX 2004, Director MX would be
    fine.
    2) Remove the projector's button from the task bar when it
    starts with our Window Xtra:
    wndRemoveFromTaskbar(true)
    3) Move the projector's window to the background with our
    Window Xtra:
    WndSetDepth(wndGetMain(),"back")
    4) Apply a 1-bit alpha mask to change the projector's shape
to make it looking like an icon, again, with our Window Xtra:
    wndTransInit(member "1BitMask",false,false)
    5) Leave all the Drag&Drop Xtra code for drop as is.
That's it, it seems MIAW isn't required.

  • Drag and drop files for burn to DVD takes FOREVER

When I drag and drop files onto the blank DVD icon, the ghosts of said files just hang there for the longest time, and I get a spinny beach ball. Many, many minutes later things finally return to normal and I can proceed with burning the DVD. It's just copying some aliases, right? It didn't used to take more than a couple of seconds before I upgarded to Mavericks. So what the **** is taking so long now?
PBP 2.66 Core 2 Duo, running 10.9.1, burning to a Samsung Portable DVD Writer Model SE-218

  • Can't drag and drop or copy paste

I have an iMac with a fusion drive using yosemite.  It started a couple weeks ago where the progress bar would not show up during copying files.  It seems I can not drag and drop files between folders, drives, or jump drives.  I also notice some files that are grayed out that appear to be some of the files I wanted to move or copy on my external drives.  They say they were created in 1969 and modified in 1984.  I cannot delete these at all.  I fixed permissions, restarted, and reinstalled Yosemite.  I tried deleting a file in the library/preferences called com.apple.finder, which did not do anything either.  Any Ideas?

Select the item in the Finder and open the Info window. If the Created date is January 24, 1984, see below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Select the text on the line below by dragging across it. Don't include the blank space at the end of the line. Only the text should be highlighted.
    touch -t 198001010000
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V, then press the space bar.
Now switch to the Finder and and select the item(s) in question. Drag into the Terminal window. More text will be added to what you entered.
Click in the Terminal window to activate it, then press return.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear. You can then quit Terminal.
    Relaunch the Finder.

Nothing is going to stop you from dragging it in multiple times, but what exactly are you trying to do?  Are you trying to get iTunes to look through the folder and pick up newly added song files?

To be more precise, you can setup a JComponent or JPanel on top of your JavaFX nodes that has a TransferHandler that can convert the (AWT/Swing) images dragged to the app to JavaFX image and then insert it into the underlying node.
As for the file chooser itselft: ListView and the JavaFX composer can allow you to create one quite easily. TreeView can aslso be used to a lesser extend (still a big buggy). For both of these, there are small bugs in the Cell API that may (or may not) prevent from displaying a proper thumbnail in the cells.
You can also use a regular JFileChooser if you do not mind the dialog box having a different LnF from the rest of your application.

  • Mac: can I drag and drop files from Finder into Files panel

I am relatively new to Mac so forgive me if this is obvious.
I just switched from Windows to Mac and now something I used to
know how to do in Windows I can't figure out how to do on Mac. In
Windows I used to open an Explorer window over Dreamweaver, select
some files, and drap and drop them into the Files panel in
Dreamweaver, and they would be sucked in.
Now on the Mac whenever I select the Finder window to select
files to drag and drop, the Dreamweaver panels disappear
completely, rather than just move beneath the Finder window. So
when I'm ready to drag and drop there's no Dreamweaver to drop
into. I see that if I put focus on Dreamweaver, then Finder won't
disappear, and I can click on Finder to begin a drag without
Dreamweaver disappearing but then it is unresponsive to a drop.
In short, I can't seem to drag and drop files from Finder
into Dreamweaver on the Mac. Am I missing something? I'm using
Dreamweaver CS3 on Leopard if that makes any difference.
    Thanks,
    Jan

I don't believe you can do this on the Mac platform. The only
other thing you could try is to use Spaces and have the Finder open
in one Space and then drag it over to Dreamweaver in another space.
Outside of that I can't think of how this would work.
