Drag-resize brush (CS4)

The new CS4 feature that allows a mouse drag-resize of a brush size or hardness is useful but for some reason I have lost the red overlay. It worked once but nothing I do - reset preferences, change brush preview colour, restart Ps or computer - brings this visual preview back.
What happened and how do I get it back? Without the colour preview a brush drag-resize is a guessing game.

I read the
GPU accelerated features in Photoshop CS4 document and see that the overlay colour is GPU generated. Ps will still adjust the brush size/hardness but not show the overlay colour when OpenGL is disabled.
Why did I turn OpenGL off? Well, with it on Ps crashed continually, the OpenGL features worked, then did not, then Ps crashed. Looks like my GeForce 7300GS 512Mb card with latest 178.24 drivers is not up to the task (especially in a dual monitor setup).

CS4 drag-resize brush option problem

In CS4 the drag-to-resize brush option should display as red (the brush preview default color) but no color shows up. Nor with the drag-to-set-hardness shortcut either. Both shortcuts work. I cannot see the hardness change on screen but a quick check of the brushes indicates that it did indeed work. Just no color indicator for either shortcut.
Vista 32 Ultimate SP1, Dell M1210 laptop with 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400, 320 GB drive.

John, some info please. Are you using the right mouse button plus Alt key? When changing the hardness, I have to hold the Shft key first and then the Alt key before I click and drag with the right mouse button. I am using Vista Ultimate 64 but that shouldn't make any difference. When some of these little irritants pop up, I usually restart PS and delete the preferences to see if anything changes. Just a suggestion.

Drag-resize doesn't resize dual brushes properly. CS4

It has come to my attention that the new drag-resize feature only changes the master diameter of the brush but leaves the dual-brush diameter intact. It is the only shortcut that does this resizing improperly.
I would like to know if everyone else experiences the same problem. Is it a bug or is this way of resizing intended?
I mainly do digital paintings and this small bug makes the feature useless for me. I hope that it will be fixed at least in cs5 :P

If you open the brush dialog, there is a dual brush setting on the left that can be enabled. If you click on it, the dual brush diameter is the first option that can be changed and it is in pixels not %. If you resize your brush size with bracket keys or right click and drag the slider, photoshop adjusts this setting automatically, but the new drag resize leaves this setting intact.

Besides using the bracket keys to resize brushes, you are supposed to be able to hold down the Alt and Control key to drag sideways to make a brush larger or up and down to make it softer. This is on Windows.
For some reason, when I do this command, my cursor changes to moving a selection and leaving a copy.
When I hold down just the Alt key, I get the eye dropper tool and when I hold down just the Control Key, I get the move - four way arrow.
I must have changed something in the keyboard shortcuts, but I don't see the option to change that command back. My Brush Resize shortcuts still work the the two bracket keys.
Any help would be appreciated.

I was trying to program my Art Pen to use the commands on the front toggle button.

Resize brush in the liquify filter, photoshop cs6 Mac (13.0.4)

Hello,
I just update to photoshop cs6 (Mac 13.0.4). Unfortunately, it's not possible anymore to resize brush in the liquify filter by "CTRL-Option-drag" like I did before in former CS6 version.
Has anyone encountered the same problem ?

its ctrl+option+shift and launch your ps, delete the
setting file when prompted.

Can´t resize brushes with shift/ and like earlier. WHY??

For me this is very importent, so don´t tell me this elegant way to resize brushes is gone. I work in Windows. (This option does not work on Mac.)

I use [ and ] to resize my brush on MAC and Win. CS6 also has onscreen sizing and hardness:

**in Edit Preferences>general you can uncheck vary round brush hardness based on HUD movement if you want to change opacity instead of hardness.

Option+control resize brush on fly CS5

When I option+control resize the brush on the fly my image turns black till I release the mouse, is there a setting to turn off so it won't do that. I want to see the image under the brush size.
I want it to function just like CS4 does.

Huh, you'd think there would be a preference setting for that. Looks like the only way is to disable OpenGL. But then you loose all the other OpenGL features.
btw, I really like the control+option on-the-fly brush size and hardness. But you have to have the brush color preview on for hardness changes to be visible. You can change it to some other color if that helps.

CS6: How to display image contents while dragging/resizing?

I'm a IT tech trying to help out one of my users, so I am not proficient in Illustrator by any means. With that being said, I was wondering if there is a way to display the contents of an image while you are dragging or resizing the image?

It should already show the outline of all the shapes while moving or resizing. As far as I know, you can't see the full color image while doing transformations. It would be unusably slow for some images.

Why can't I click and drag clone brush??

I'm working with a trial version of Aperture and trying to clone out a couple of annoying background details. When I use the clone tool, I cannot click and drag or "paint" with it. I only get a circular clone that is the diameter of the brush. I don't want to clone out the problem areas with a bunch of little circles! I want a smooth, painted cloned area. Is this possible with Aperture or do I need to go back to Photoshop....

OK--Think I finally discovered the issue. I'm using a trackball and keyboard setup from Euphonix that communicates with the Mac via Ethernet and TCP/IP. Aperture cannot deal with mouse strokes transmitted this way. If I switch to a USB mouse connected directly to the Mac, the brushes work normally. Still a disappointment since the Euphonix is my default keyboard/mouse and I don't really want to keep a separate USB mouse hooked up.....

Photoshop wont let me resize brush using shortcut

Im running photoshop CS5 on windows 7, and I can not resize my brush or healing brush tool or clone stamp using my keyboard short cuts [ and ]. If i restart photoshop the problem goes away for 10-20 minutes but comes back.
Things i've tried;
updated photoshop
reset prefrences
rebooted photoshop and computer
rest all tool

There's an easier way. I'm Finnish, so the task bar has an "FI" icon (for the keyboard) to the left of the tray icons. By clicking that icon, I get a selection of available keyboard mappings, or at least US English and Finnish. Naturally enough, if I activate the US English keyboard, I can use Photoshop shortcuts. For instance, the two keys to the right of the "P" key adjust the brush size. Use of the keyboard icon in the taskbar has the benefit that my normal keyboard layout is restored when I exit Photoshop. I'm using Win7 Pro, 64-bit.

Mouse-over image resizing in CS4

on my website (www.kogamusic.us) i have an image that changes to another image when mousing over it. the two images are different sizes, so as it is now the second image distorts because it is constrained to the aspect ratio of the first image. My question is, how do i make it so that both images auto-resize depending on the size of the window while keeping the second image constrained and distorting to the size of the first image. I am able to auto resize the first image with with=#% and hight=#%, but i can't figure out where to put html in the correct place to auto-resize (while constrained and distorted) the second image.

Hard to say. Just maybe a hickup in the system. The popping up is slightly delayed on about every system but I have never had them not pop up at all.
Anyways, here is a link that pretty much fixes weird stuff happening in Photoshop that is called resetting the Prefs.

Problem dragging 3D object (CS4)

I have a displayObject/movieClip that contains various child
display objects, 1 of which I can move about using startDrag(). All
is good until the parent is transformed with a rotationY tween.
Once this is applied the startDrag code stops working and I can't
move the clip around any more, even if the rotationY value is back
at 0. Is there anyway to get round this problem. I have looked on
the web and haven't found any body with a similar problem. I
suppose being a 3D problem which is new to CS4 its still early days
for problems to be found.
Is it possible to reset the displayObject back to a normal 2D
display object through actionscript once the tween is finished.
Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

manage to solve it before anybody replies.
I've managed to fix my problem and managed to reset the
object by saving a copy of the transform matrix of the
displayObject before the 3D tranformation is applied and then
afterwards I just apply the saved matrix back. This then erases any
3D stuff and allows the startDrag stuff to work again.

Custom Brushes CS4/CS5

I have been trying to create a brush that looks like a REAL marker. Looking at my image you can see the issue I am having. Top image is a real marker scan. Middle/left image is a calligraphic brush in illustrator. Bottom image is what I used to create my art brush. Middle/Right image is what I got after applying the art brush to middle/left path in Illustrator.
I am looking for something that behaves like a calligraphic brush but has the texture of an art brush. Is this possible in Illustrator?
Oh and it’s not the non-zero winding fill rule.

Neither ArtBrushes nor Pattern Brushes are going to give you the direction-dependent scaling (relative to the spine path) of a CalligraphicBrush.
Pattern brush would probably be your best bet. That way you can set the interior as well as both end caps.
In CS5, you can set an ArtBrush to scale only the region between two guides specified in the Art Brush Options dialog, thereby not scaling the "ends." But this still does not give you the "keep-aligned-to-page" behavior of a Calligraphic Brush.

You are also going to encounter the mitering problem inherent in ArtBrushes. ArtBrushes don't make sharp direction changes very elegantly, as you can see in your middle-right image. Even if you do concoct an ArtBrush that you find satisfactory, it's usually best to break the spine path at sharp corners.
Why kick against the thorns? This kind of thing is still best done in a raster program. Corel Painter (Originally Fractal Design Painter) would be a good choice. If you insist on its being done as vector paths, you might take a look at Microsoft Expression Design (originally Fractal Design Expression). I don't recall whether it can make its "Expression Strokes" stay oriented to the page as they are stretched along the spine path; it's been a while since I messed with it.

Brush resize with [ ] deletes layer

Hello, ALL!
I have Photoshop CS4 x64 Extended installed on Windows XP x64 and there is a problem with resizing brushes with brackets []. Pressing these buttons leads to active layer deletion. Undo restores layer and resizing work ok for a while, but after some resizes or selection of another layer, the same error occures. I have 11.0.1 update installed. This error is actual for both x32 and x64 versions. Drag resize works fine.
Did someone face the same issue and have a solution?

If you are experiencing problems like that and you are in the laptop make sure to check the keyboard shortcuts and change them to some other key on your keyboard. This tutorial shows you how to:

Brushes in Photoshop will Resize once then not resize unless I click another tool then back to the Brushes (MAC)

I am an artist and am trying to get into the digital side of Photoshop. I have been teaching myself painting with the Intuos 5 Touch tablet. I am using Photoshop 6 and everything works great. The only problem is when I use the brush tool, then resize using the " [ ] " bracket tools or the circle pad on the Intuos 5 I can still paint but the brush size is stuck until I select another tool, then select the brush tool again. Then I have one chance to resize it and it is stuck again. When the Intuos is not plugged in and I am using a mouse it works perfectly fine. I also tried out my fathers Intuos (not 5) and the same problem occurred. From reading a bunch of forums and finding no help, I have come to the conclusion that there is a glitch in Photoshop CS6 instead of it being the tablet, but I could be wrong. That is why I decided to post here. I know the problem is not huge but when you are a digital artist and you have to move quickly, having constant access to resizing brushes is much needed. Thanks for reading. Hope somebody can help.
