Dragging and the Finder folder

Issue 1: Up until day before yesterday, I was able to drag documents and folders from one place to another. I don't know what happened, but I can't anymore. How do I fix this problem?
Issue 2: I used to be able to click the finder and a window would open. Now I have to right click and select open new finder window. How do I fix this?

You can reapply it over the top of any previously downloaded version. I see that your profile says 10.6.8.
Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.

How do I view only the desktop with icons and the finder?

I have a hot corner set up to show the desktop.. in Snow Leopard when I exposed the desktop and then clicked on the finder in the dock *just* the finder would show.
Now, with Lion, when I click on the finder it comes into view but all the other open applications come sweeping back in hiding the desktop.
Can I change this back to the way it was before? Or is there another sneaky quick way to show only the desktop and the finder? Set up an entirely different "desktop" in mission control dedicated only to having nothing open in it?
In short: I need a fast way to drag icons from the desktop into folders in the finder. Also, this is driving me nuts.

If you can see a patch of Desktop, with a program (any program other than Finder) window active, hold down both Option and Command and click that patch of Desktop. This will auto-hide all windows for all other programs and switch focus to the Finder/Desktop at the same time.
This works when going from any active program to another, except that the Desktop itself will not get hidden (open Finder folders will get hidden).
To bring a program's windows back to visible status, just click the program's icon in the Dock. For open Finder windows which are hidden, just click the Desktop (plain click).
If you want to hide the windows of just one program, with it the active program hold down just the Option key and click in the window of another program (the Desktop or a folder window counts for this purpose). All windows of the original program will be hidden, and focus will switch to the second program.

How do I remove the hidden file icons from the Finder folder?

I recently had problems with Final Cut Pro and had to remove QuicktimeX and use Pacifist to re-install QuicktimeX back into the Applications folder.
I now have "hidden icons" that are lightly grayed out in the Finder folder. I was told by the Apple Genious leave them alone until you know the correct way of removing them from the folders because they play an important role in the system folder.
Can someone advise me on how to make them go away again?

TM vs WhatSize and the Finder

I have been trying to find a way to look at the various backup folders to see how big they really are. No luck so far.
The hard links that TM uses are fooling both WhatSize (v10.4.0, released today) and the Finder. BTW, earlier versions of WhatSize will die before it finishes measuring my backup disk.
WhatSize says that there is 6.23 TB of data on my 750 G (698.5 formatted) disk. It says that each of the 31 actual backup folders is about 208 GB (they vary a little).
The Finder, when told to calculate sizes and Nudged to actually do it, does the same thing. Each folder is shown as the total size of the disk at the time it was backed up.
This is due to the hard links. TM uses hard links to represent files and folders that have not changed. Therefore, if a particular file has never changed, it is only on the disk once, but it is pointed to as many times as there are backup folders. Each hard link goes directly back to the original file and it gets counted again for every backup folder. Hard links are designed to look identical to the original file and they sure do. The actual source file won't go away until EVERY hard link that points to it is deleted. The first instance of a file entry in a directory is actually a hard link. Each hard link CAN have a different name too but it will still point back to it's source file. Each hard link carries equal weight to the file system.

The thing in your download folder is a "disk image." You have to double-click it and it will place a white "disk" on your desktop. It should also open a window with a Firefox icon and your applications folder. Then you can drag it to the applications folder. When you are done drag that disk to the trash. However, in your Finder's preferences, under Sidebar, do you have Music and Pictures checked off?

You don't need iDVD unless you are going to make DVDs. If you are just trying to share files, iDVD won't help you at all.
What you want to do is in iMovie, choose File/Share/File, and export that way. It creates an .mp4 file that should be readable on Macs or Windows.
You could also File/Share/YouTube if you don't mind posting them to YouTube, because of course YouTube videos are watchable by any Mac or Windows computer made in the last 10 years.

Worse, i can't force quit the finder and get it to relaunch - the command won't work.
Most of the Lion software also won't work - iTunes, Mail, iCal - and only some of the preferences work.
The message:

Won't go away no matter if i hit Ignore or Report...
I have no clue what to do...

Does that happen if you boot into "safe mode"? Launch the Console utility and look for messages that might explain the problem. If you see a "crash report", post its contents here.

Had the same issues. For me, I found unmounting any external drives and relaunching FCPX worked.
Mavericks seems to have some issues with launching Final Cut, so its best to launch and then plug in any external drives - hope that helps.

Did you check your user name and password in Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap your email account, tap SMTP, then tap the primary server name. Make sure the settings there are correct.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
