Dragging files out of iPhoto

I was uploading photos to fotki out of iPhoto and I noticed that even though I dragged the modified photos out of iPhoto only the original file got uploaded. Is there any way of dragging the photo out of iPhoto, but still retain the modifications made to the picture? I don't want to have to go into the modified folder since this would take forever for batch uploads. It's much easier to drag the pictures right off of iPhoto.
Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you dragging to the desktop first? That has always given me the edited version. If it's not for you, rebuild the library as follows and try again: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can't drag files out of the dock folders/stacks

On Mavericks I'm able to drag files out of the folders/stacks I have on the Dock (Downloads, Documents, etc.) just as you would anywhere on OSX. But, for some reason my mom (Mavericks) and my fiancee (Mountain Lion) can't. I've tried checkin the permissions for those folders (in Get Info) and they have read/write permissions. This only happens in list view, not in fan, grid or automatic. Is there some hidden setting or something else that would allow them to be able to drag files?

For downloads, go to your user folder downloads and remove them there. Same for Applications. To remove alias from the Dock hold down the command key while dragging them from the Dock.
If that does't work, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. Then try a Dock reset.
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • Dragging Files Out Of iTunes

    Hey guys
I want to drag files out of my iTunes library, onto a flash drive so i can put it onto my PS3. Anyway, some of the albums i have drag like normal, and i can put them on, but some albums dont. When i drag the files, nothing happens. Even when i try and drag them to the desktop, still nothing. So i go right click, and show in windows explorer, but i get the error "c:/documents and settings.... etc." "Access Id Denied"
But i can access the file that is in my My Music folder, if you get me, but just can't drag it out of iTunes. Anyway know of a solution? I don't want to drag it out of my My Music folder, because the album artwork doesn't follow it, but if i drag it out of the iTunes library, album art follows it.
    Cheers.

What kind are the files you are trying to copy from itunes?

  • Drag file OUT of portfolio onto another program

By default a user is able to drag a file out of a pdf portfolio onto their desktop or a folder. I'm wondering if it's possible to grant permission to drag the file out of the portfolio into a specified document. Is this possible? Where/how could I modify this permission? Specifically, I have image files that I want to drag out of the portfolio and into another pdf document.

I posted this on another thread. See if this works:
    1) Uncheck "Backup previous version" in Keynote's Preferences.
    2) Make a duplicate copy of your file that has issues and save it.
    3) If you still get spinning wheels from switching between apps after editing or 10 seconds of inactivity, manually save with command+s. It may beach ball here but be patient and wait for it to finish! Try editing and resume doing work now.
Command+s may be a bit slow but I think that might be normal since the files are so big.
Good luck and let me know if this works.

By default a user is able to drag a file out of a pdf portfolio onto their desktop or a folder. Permission to drag those items onto another document or program is restricted. Hi,
I don't think you are going to have much luck with this task.
While you can drag out of a portfolio, it is generally just to Explorer. You can't drag a file into another PDF, using drag and drop. This functionality is not available within Acrobat.
In addition you will not be able to drag images from a portfolio or from Explorer into an image field in an XFA form.
    Sorry,

  • Why can't I drag files out of folder stacks in Yosemite

After upgrade to Yosemite, I can't drag files or folders from stacks in the dock to anywhere, I need to open the folder in the finder to do this. anybody havin

For me, it kind of fixed itself. Unfortunately I cannot say for sure what I did that triggered the fix, because I just noticed the other day that I was able to drag and drop again (what a relief). I can't say for sure that this is related, but the one thing that I did immediately before noticing that it was no longer broken that seemed like it could have had some effect was installing a new, Yosemite compatible version of Asepsis (http://asepsis.binaryage.com). Maybe the problem was the old version of Asepsis hanging around from Mavericks, or maybe doing the Aspesis install somehow fixed it indirectly, or maybe it was just a coincidence and that had nothing to do with it. But that's all I could think of that I did that might have had an effect on the Finder.

  • Why can't I drag files out of Photoshop CC to another program?

Hello, I have a smart object in Photoshop that I want to drag into InDesign, however when I drag the file onto InDesign's icon in the dock it does nothing. This has worked for me in the past. It won't drag into Illustrator either.
Has anyone else experienced this and resolved it?

The reason is Photoshop is a document editor. It does not work on files it can only save documents into some image file formats. So there is no file that you can drag out of Photoshop. It does support copy and paste and you can copy layer from to the system clipboard or a copy merge to the clipboard and paste into an othe application.  I do not have other Adobe applications so  I do not know what data exchange Adobe does support between its application.

I can't drag files out of stacks (Downloads or Application folders) or app icons off my dock. I reset my SMC when I rebooted and it worked but then I reboot the next day (today) and it won't work anymore. Do I really have to reset SMC every time I boot up? I recently downgraded from Yosemite because it is incomplete and full of bugs and now I have this issue.

  • Horrors: How do I get all my original photo files back out of iPhoto 9.1.2?

In my heart I KNEW I should never have upgraded iPhoto when the update came in for 9.1.2. But I had no idea what it was going to do. Now, to my horror, I have found out.
It has EATEN all the original photo files in my Home/Pictures folder and hidden them inside a single iPhoto database! Yikes.
I discovered this nightmare when I tried to find the original hi-res of a certain photo, and searched my Mac for it by filename – the one assigned to it by my camera.
All the original and modified versions of the file should have appeared in the search box – but no original appeared, sending me into a total panic. I also searched my laptop and back-up drive to no avail. Then I looked in the Home/Pictures folder and there were no photo files there, when there used to be hundreds. Just one single iPhoto Library file.
I felt sick, I thought I had lost all my original photos.
So now I have two problems, and questions:
    1) iPhoto only displays photos from the last 18 months, so how do you access all the photos from years back now?
    2) How can I export ALL my photos back out of the iPhoto database so I can have them where I can see them on my Mac again – as individual files in my Pictures folder like they were before?
    Oh, and one other question:
What can I use instead of iPhoto? Can I revert to an earlier version? Or is there an application that I can import photos to that will leave the original files where they are? Then I can make a back-up of the originals before importing them into iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    Sarah
PS: How do I change my Apple Discussions username?

There's no reason to use the Finder to access your photos. That's what iPhoto is for.  THe following is from a post by Terence Devlin on accessing photos for use outside of iPhoto.  It's the definitive treatise on the subject.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation   which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3.Show File:
    a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    b. On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • External editor getting error window when trying to load photo in iphoto yet I can drag out of iphoto to the desktop then load right into photoshop with no errors

I use Photoshop elements 9 to edit , since the last up-date when I'm in iPhoto and click edit in external editor when photoshop opens it sits there a minute and  and then a error window comes up saying something about an unvalead jpeg marker can't open but I came drag the image out of iPhoto to the desktop and then open it with photoshop with no trouble ? help I'm running 10.6.7 on a 2007 mac pro iPhoto 11 Ver. 9.1.3

There's a bug in iPhoto 9.1.3 when using Photoshop as the external editor when trying to edit a tif, png or psd file.  That's because iPhoto is just duplicating that file and changing the extension to jpg without acutally changing the photo's format.  That's why PS says it's an unknown format.
No know solution at this time except edit only jpgs and raw files in iPhoto with Photoshop.  Also send a bug report to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

    Album overview
A photo album in iPhoto is just like one you would create with printed photos: It’s a collection of photos you select from your library and arrange in the order you want.
You can create photo albums to:
Focus on a particular subject, such as your favorite nature photos
Group pictures that you want to send to a friend, post on a webpage, or burn to a CD or DVD
Gather a decade of anniversary photos
iPhoto has two kinds of photo albums:
Standard photo albums: You create these albums (B, shown below) by selecting particular photos. You can add new photos by dragging them to the album (or using the Add To button), and you can remove photos at any time. All adding and removing is done manually; iPhoto doesn’t update standard albums automatically as you import new photos.
Smart Albums: iPhoto creates these albums for you, based on criteria your specify. iPhoto then updates Smart Albums (A, shown above) for you as your library changes. For example, you could create a Smart Album containing:
Photos of specific people, such as your family members. As you import new photos, iPhoto uses Faces to detect your family members, and automatically adds new photos of them to the Smart Album (after you’ve confirmed the matches in Faces).
All the photos of your daughter taken on school field trips in third grade. Use Faces (to name your daughter) and keywords (to mark certain photos or events as “field trips”) to help specify the photos you want iPhoto to place in that Smart Album.
Only photos taken with a specific camera, or photos matching other Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) information.
You can make as many albums as you like, and you can include the same photo in several albums without making multiple copies of it.
After you create an album, such as “Australia Adventures,” it appears in your Source list below Albums.
In full-screen view, the album appears as a stack of photos below Albums.
To further organize your library, you can group several albums (along with slideshows and projects) into a folder. For example, you could create a folder containing several years of birthday albums or a collection of albums with photos of your camping trips.
To create a folder, see “Create a folder in the Source list and move items into it” in “Customize the Source list”.
Folders appear only in the Source list, not in full-screen view.
Note: A photo album is different from a photo book, which is a collection of photos you create to get professionally printed and bound. See this topic: Photo book overview.

  • Unable to drag/copy photos out of iPhoto

I'm unable to drag many photos at a time out of iPhoto and into a new folder on my desktop.  I used to be able to, but in the recent months this hasn't been working.  Also, when I select all photos and copy them, not all of them seem to be copied.  When pasting them into a new folder on my desktop, only about 90% of the photos actually appear, and I have to hunt down the ones that weren't copied and manually drag them in one by one.

There have been several reports of this issue over the lasy while, and we dont know if it's an OS or an iPhoto problem. There is no fix we know about at this time. The workaround is to use the File -> Export command.
and makes the file size 5 times larger
Set the Kind to Current and you'll get exactly the same image you would with drag and drop - a preview of limited quality missing most of the metadata.

  • I am having problems backing up my photos in iPhoto and dragging them to desktop folder to burn out of iPhoto!

I have been having issues with backing up photos in iPhoto for  awhile. I used to burn them right out of iPhoto by selecting the folder, going to Share and then Burn. I have been getting an error message that says "Burn failed because there was an error producing data for the burn". So I started to drag the photos from iPhoto to a folder on the desktop, then burn the folder to a disc. This worked for awhile. Recently iPhoto will not allow me to drag photos to a desktop folder. I can select them in iPhoto, click on them and it shows the plus sign and number of photos, but when I drop them it does nothing. I can do it one at a time for about 4 photos, then it stops again. I also tried to export the photos into a folder on the desktop and it says Unable to create /Users/... I do back up photos to a TimeCapsule as well, but like to have a DVD in a fireproof safe too. I also ran disk utility repair disk permissions. I have an account for my wife as well and both iphotos share the same iphoto library but ths has never been a problem until recently. She also uses aperature, but pulls the photos from iphoto to edit them. Any help would be much appreciated.
