Dragging files to a DVD is very slow

Since a couple of months dragging files to a DVD player takes minutes.
I'm not talking about the burning process but just about dragging files from my harddrive to my dvd folder. This used to be a matter of seconds but since a while (I believe since the mavericks update) once I drop a couple of hundred files on my dvd I get a spinning wheel and it takes minutes until it stops and the files are in the folder.
I'm running OS 10.9.1 on a 2009 2.66 quad core Mac Pro with 16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 and got a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GH41N
Any Idea what can be causing this problem?

More than 50 files spread out at one level makes the Finder slow. Put those same files inside a folder, and drag and drop the folder,  and things usually speed right up.

Could something from Bitdefender be activated somehow and slowing my computer down?
Yes. Back up all data, then uninstall "Bitdefender" completely according to the developer's instructions -- NOT by dragging an application to the Trash or hunting for files by name.

  • Can't drag files from a DVD I burned

I transfer files off of my hard drive to conserve space from time to time. After burning the files to a DVD I am now unable to drag the files off the disk and transfer them back to my hard drive. I can only read them from the disk. What am I doing wrong?

Still need more information. What happens when you try to drag a file from your DVD to your Desktop? Does an error dialog pop up? If so what does it say? What happens if you use the cp command in Terminal ( +cp <path to file on DVD> ~/Desktop+ ). Does that succeed or fail? If it fails, what error message do you get?

  • Lightroom 3.6 exporting to CD/DVD is very slow

I'm using Lightroom 3.6 for Mac and when I export to CD/DVD it takes several minutes to burn the CD.  For example, I have about 50 jpg images that I export at 100% quality and at 300 dpi with no watermarks, etc.  I can use Finder to burn to disc funtion and I can burn 2 cd's in the time it takes Lightroom to burn.  I want to be able to use Lightroom for all my processing from importing to corrections to printing to exporting on CD.  When shooting events we take the images in jpg, import and put them into folders for each client.  Once the client purchases a CD of all their images we burn the CD.  I do not want to use separate software to burn the CD if at possible.  Is there settings or something I can change in Lightroom to speed up the process?
    Thanks!!

Thanks Lan.  I take the photos in jpg format (not RAW) in the camera, use Lightroom import and assign a sub-folder.  Once the customer reviews the photos (in Lightroom), they have the option to purchase a CD or print.  If they want to purchase a CD, I use the export feature and choose CD/DVD instead of Hard Drive and Lightroom request to input a CD and I click on Burn.  Lightroom then prompts for me to enter text for a name and then it starts the burn process.
I hate it takes so long because Lightroom is a good all-in-one prograrm that does all I need.  The burn to CD/DVD is very nice becuase if I have more images than a single CD will hold, it will prompt for the 2nd, 3rd, etc CD until it finishes.  Other CD burning software will only tell you that it cannot burn to CD because the data is more than the CD will hold.  When in the field an event you cannot hold up sales because it is to slow to burn.  Will have to look at other alternatives besides Lightroom for this.
    Thanks again.

  • File Transfer through ActiveSync is VERY slow in WinCE 7 (on the same device with WinCE 6.0 the speed is normal)

    Hello!
I met with very strange activesync behaviour. We ported our bsp (based on smdk6410) from WinCE 6.0 to WinCE 7.0. the problem is that WinCE 7.0 copy files from desktop computer into device through ActiveSync (or WMDC) very slowly. With WinCE 6.0 this was
much faster (with WinCE 7.0 the speed becomes slower many times). I tried the same files. I tried different desktop OS - XP, Windows 7, Windows 8. The result is same. The hardware of the device is the same for both WinCE 6.0 and WinCE 7.0. The bsp in general
is the same too. The file is transfered slowly from desktop into WinCE 7.0 device in both cases - through ActiveSync gui and through Rapi api using our software.
Note, that our bootloder transfer OS image via RNDIS with the same speed as using WinCE 6.0. So looks like the problem in WinCE 7.0 in USB serial or in ActiveSync desktop or device sides...
In addition!!! The very strange thing is that I found only two cases when WinCE 7.0 transfers file through activesync with the same speed as in WinCE 6.0 (with fast speed):
    1. When I transfer from desktop OS that is XP installed on Virtual Machine (using VMware). However the speed is normal only with XP on VMware. I tried with Windows 8 on VMware and the speed was slow too.
    2. It's very interesting fact. When I press Sync button in desktop ActiveSync dialog the trasfer becomes normal (fast)! during time when activesync is performing synchronization. When synchronization finished the speed looks slow again... So when I press
Sync button all the time when a file is transfered - a file is loaded into desktop fast (the time is the same as using WinCE 6.0...) This behaviour occurs for all desktop OS.
Note that the problem is actual only for trasferring from desktop into device. WinCE 7.0 trasfers files from device into desktop normal.
    Can somebody describe that?
    Thanks!

Which version of SuSE Linux would possibly help here. I'm using version 7.3 Pro and it is only 10 minutes slower than my installation on XP Pro (the script is 16 pages long and takes 8,000,000 records and converts them into 30,000 records of useful information-takes 20 minutes in XP, 30 minutes in SuSE 7.3 on a personal computer). I used the orarun9i script and followed the directions for re-compiling the genclntsh from the SuSE installations online.

  • DVD recording very slow on my Satellite M30

    Hi,
I have a satellite M30 with a DVD burner Teac dv-w28e. burning onto DVD (8x) takes more than 1 hour and half for 4 GB, even if the burning program says the speed is 8x and the estimated time is 10 minutes.
    So, what's the matter???

    Hi
Which burning program did you use?
I prefer to use the Nero burning utility. In my opinion, its one of the best burning tools. You should check if you have this issue with other burning programs.
Did you simulate the burning procedure or did you burn the DVD without simulating?
As far as I know some programs simulate firstly the burning procedure and after proper simulation the files will be burn to the DVD. In this case the burning procedure takes much longer.

  • File copy over AFP / SMB very slow on Mavericks

    Hi guys.
I have a retina macbook pro (early 2013) and a mac mini (late 2012).
Both are running 10.9.1. The mac mini has OS X server installed and 2 USB 3.0 harddisks attached to it in RAID0.
I have a Thunderbolt display hooked up to my MBP. I have a 1gbit wired network between the two machines.
Now comes the problem: file copy from the USB 3.0 RAID array to the macbook pro over AFP or SMB is slow, I only get around 8 MB/sec.
First I thought it was a wiring issue (I created my own ethernet cables). However, I tried copying the file via SCP (i.e. SSH) and then I get 50 MB/sec. Still not close to the maximum for gigabit, but at least a lot higher than 8 MB/sec.
I tried googling if anybody else has the same issue, but couldn't really find definitive answers.
I have tried everything with both jumbo frames of and on. Both give the same results.
What's even stranger is if I connect my MBP over 5 GHz to my airport instead of wired, I get 20 MB/sec over AFP....
As far as I know the problem did not arise in the pre-Mavericks time.
Does anybody have any suggestions or solutions? 8 MB/sec is not really that nice

Have you checked your ethernet speed/duplex settings on the ethernet port and XP machine?

  • OSD: Downloading multiple files is very slow

I has a exe software. It is not a single file package, it contains a lot of files. when I installed this software in OSD, I found it would spend 15~20minutes to download files.
It was very strange. The software is only 750 mb size. the speed of downloading 6 GB OS image is also much faster than this software.
I know downloading multiple files is slower than downloading a single file, if their size are same.
But the downloading of multiple files in OSD is "really" very slow.
Why?  Cause of BITS or RDC?  How to fix it?
PS:I update to SCCM 2012 R2 with CU1,  add the below into SCCM
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\DP]
    "RamDiskTFTPBlockSize"=dword:00004000
    http://windowsdeployments.net/how-to-speed-up-pxe-boot-in-wds-and-sccm/
Now, the download speed up to 4 minutes, but it still slower than the normal copy & paste.
    Test result:
    OSD: 2.6G
    single image, 2 minutes
OSD: 750m multiple files, 4 mintues
after OSD, copy & paste from network drive, 750 multiple files, 1 mintue

I had updated to CU1 and add this into regedit . It is quicker than before, but it still slower than the normal.

  • DB Import is very slow on ESX

    Hi All,
We are performing OS/DB migration from Sun/Oracle to Win/SQL server. Export took 9 hours when we perform import it is taking more than 25 hours and we are using ESX ( VMWARE), import system configuration is
    OS : Windows 2003
    DB : SQL Server
    8 CPUS
    32 GB RAM
1.5 TB HD ( for databases)
    500GB for log files 1
    500GB for log file 2
Importing is taking very slow and we are split export and import method.  Please help me reason for the slow performance and let know any specific configuration we have to use for sap on vmware specific to SQL Server DB.
    Regards,
    Kanthi.

    > - How big is your queued disk I/O? (use performance monitor to check)
This number indicates whether you have an I/O problem (using too many R3loads in parallel). If you want to trace down performance problems you should get familiar with the Windows tools, you may need that later during production also.
    > - How many parallel processes are you running?
    >
    >                       20
And you make sure using migration monitor that no packages of the same table are loaded simultaneously if you have split the talbles?
    > Network team is complaining about some ESX issues are experiencing, is this effect to the performance of the DB-Import.
I can't say since I don't know if you load the data from a network drive or locally or if the system loading the data into the database is local or remote.
I suggest you open an OSS call, they may have a look on the system and may give you some idea. Just from a description without having actual I/O key numbers it's impossible to give any hint where to look at to speed things up.

Here is some thing from the Oracle Utilities guide.
    Processing Restrictions
The following restrictions apply when you process data with the Export and Import utilities:
Java classes, resources, and procedures that are created using Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) are not placed in the export file.
Constraints that have been altered using the RELY keyword lose the RELY attribute when they are exported.
When a type definition has evolved and then data referencing that evolved type is exported, the type definition on the import system must have evolved in the same manner.
The table compression attribute of tables and partitions is preserved during export and import. However, the import process does not use the direct path API, hence the data will not be stored in the compressed format when imported.

  • My FileMaker has been very slow

Recently my File MAker pro has gone very slow. The version is 5.5. Is it too old for leopard?

I'm really tired of seeing the pinwheel every time I open an application
That's a sign of a drive that's either failing, or has a lot of bad sectors as it's taking time for the drive to read the sectors, OS X gives the spinning beach ball effect as it's waiting.
It also could be because your drive is nearly full.
The bad sectors might have come because you are moving the computer while the hard drive is in operation.
Your very likely going to have to backup your data off the machine to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine) Zero Erase the entire drive and resinstall OS X etc.,

  • Very slow profile customization

When I ran 8.1.7 version sqlj to compile my sqlj files, I found it was very slow in profile customization. It was about 10 times slow than 8.1.6 sqlj compiler. Anyone knows why?
    Thanks.
    Daniel Huang

    Thanks.
I did use -ser2class flag. But the entire command is the exactly same as the one when I used the 8.1.6 compiler. The 8.1.6 compiler needed about 25 seconds and the 8.1.7 one needs about 280 seconds. The only things I changed were that I upgraded my 8.1.6 client to 8.1.7 client by only using 8.1.7 classes12.zip, ocijdbc8.dll, and Oracle/Ora81/sqlj/*. The rest of the client is still 8.1.6 without change. I use NT 4.0 and JDK 1.3.0_02.
The application I am working on uses object types that are translated into sqlj and java files. The sqlj compiler is used to translate and compile all sqlj files into java classes. They are my persistence layer in my application.

  • Very slow working with eps files over new network

    Please help!!!
Our IT has recently upgraded us from a OSX server to a 2 Terabyte SNAP SERVER 520.
I am using the only INTEL Mac in the department (we have another 10+ G5 PPCs running 10.4), and the only one using OSX 10.5. Since changing to the new server, I am also the only one with several file saving/opening issues.
I believe this is a network issue.
It is with mostly ADOBE products and we all know they will not support, working over the network. Due to the volume of files, I simply cannot drag files to my HD, and work locally. It is not practical. I also know that we have not had any issues in the past, and don't see why I can't get to the root of the problem.
**The most obvious issue is Illustrator .eps files.**
I can open and save .ai files in good time both locally, and over the network. There is no difference either way. HOWEVER, if it is an .eps file working over the network is not practical. I get the spinning wheel for about 2 minutes each time I open, save, or make a change. It is VERY slow. Working on eps files locally is fine (about the same speed as .ai files), but as soon as it hits the server, it is painfully slow to do anything.
Additionally, when saving Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign AND Quark 7 files (direct to the network), I am regularly getting "Could not save because write access was not granted", or "Could not save becasue unexpected end-of-file was encountered", or "Could not save because the file is already in use or as left open" type errors.
I simply then click 'OK', and then hit save again, and it either gives me the same message, or it goes into 'save as' mode which lets me save the file (same name, and same location, but the original file has disappeared).
I am connected to the server IP address through afp:// but have also tried cifs://. IT have removed all access to the server through smb://, so I cannot try this.
    ANY help is appreciated.

With regard to the EPS issue, I think I may have found the source of the problem for SMB users: the Suitcase Fusion plug-in.
Did you make any progress on these issues?
