Dragging Files to the Dock

In Mountain Lion, I was able to open and minimize multiple files in the dock to access them one at a time or open them all so I could work on them.  With the installation of Mavericks, I am unable to make the files stay on the dock.  If I open a file and minimize it to the dock the icon appears; however, as soon as I elect the second file to be opened and minimized, it replaces the one entered previously.  Has Mavericks deleted this useful feature?

I can't reproduce the issue here, Try this...
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash this file:
com.apple.dock.plist
The log out and back in or restart.
(This will reset your Dock to default, so you'll need to re-setup the way you like it.)

  • Cannot Drag & Drop in the dock or double click to open files anymore

Since installing OS X 10.4.3 then .4 I can only open files through the appropiate
application using OPEN under FILE in that application. Drag & drop into the dock app only gives a momentary flash and a double click on the file/document does nothing. Any ideas? It worked fine in 10.3

I have a similar issue, but my case is pretty odd (it is to me, anyway). I am in a largely Windows-based company, but work in a small Mac-based department. We recently relocated into new offices, and the new environment is run on a Windows 2003 server (our old offices were on a Windows 2000 server).
My issue is that when I try to double-click an icon, drag an icon to the Dock, or open with keyboard shortcuts, the application launches, but no file opens. The only way I can open a file is via File>Open through the application.
My computer is a PowerMac G5 running OS X 10.4.4 -- oddly, our 10.3.x users do not have this issue. And I never had any problems on the W2K server. So I'm sure there's something with the new 2003 server and 10.4, but I've searched through the threads and didn't see anything exactly like my issue.
Any thoughts? Are there server settings that may have been missed by our IT department? Or is there something I need to set on my Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Cannot drag files to mail dock icon to compose new message with attachment

    Hello,
I can no longer drag images or files to the dock icon to open a compose message window with the attachment. I drag the file and nothing happens.
I first noticed using skitch. Then I tried both a jpg and word .docx from finder and neither worked. I then tried dragging to other applications like photoshop and that worked fine. So it seems to be isolated to mail.app
I tried repairing my permissions and that didn't fix the problem.
I am using the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.2
    Lori

Alright well the problem is back and I did some further testing.
It works when mail.app is not already open, I can drag images or any type of file to mail, mail will open and create a new message with the attachment.
IF mail is already open, the only thing I've been able to drag are links from safari, images or files no longer work.

  • Can't Drag Files into the Itunes Library anymore

I was just taking some mp3s from my old computer to my new one and I have been doing this for a few days, yesterday, I couldn't drag anymore songs into the library for some reason. A blue rectangle comes up, but I can't position it over 'Music'. Dragging files into the playlists still work though.
    Can anyone help?

  • Can't drag files into the queue window on some computers

For some reason, on my new desktop and my laptop. I cannot drag files into the Queue window in Media encoder. I  have tried dragging avi's, wav, and mp4. As the files I am dragging hover over the queue window, my mouse turns into the "circle with a line through it" pointer and I cannot add the files that way. I can click the plus sign and then browse to its location to add. I just want to have my drag n drop feature working again... Any ideas why i can on some computers and not others?
I did try running media encoder as administrator. All my computers are running windows 8.1.

do you have source patching turned on for audio?

  • I can't drag files with the mouse

Just installed Mountain Lion. After about four days I can't drag files with the mouse. Not across the desktop or from Finder window to Finder window.

I have the same problem, I have posted the below here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4152036?start=0&tstart=0
I have exactly the same problem on Mountain Lion- I go to drag files from the finder to another finder folder or the desktop and when I go to release the mouse button the file stays in a "hover" state, as if I hadn't released the mouse. It then follows my mouse cursor around forever. Very frustrating.
I have rebooted several times - any ideas?

  • After installing Mavericks, dragging files to the apps in the dock no longer works.  Getting " The Application Can't Be Found" error

Just installed Maverick and now the drag and drop file open from finder to dock apps doesn't work?
Looks like spacebar for quick look isn't working correctly either

I am annoyed by, I think, the same problem.  I would like to drag Pages files directly to the finder in the dock, but now with Mavericks I can not do this.  It is bothersome to have to click on the finder to open it up when I did not have to do that with the old operating system.  I hope someone can help us both out.
I also hope that in the next update Apple addresses the concerns many are having with the newest version of Pages.  Until something is changed, I am sticking with old Pages because I find it to be a much better program to use.

  • I downloaded Firefox to my Macbook, but when I drag it to the dock and open it, I get a blank Firefox window and so can't run Firefox.

Firefox shows properly downloaded with 18.7 meg. I dragged from the download folder into the Applications folder. When I try to drag from the Apps folder to the Dock, Firefox will not stay in the dock but instead shows on the desktop. When I click on the Firefox logo on the desktop, a Firefox window appears, with no options to do anything.

I downloaded firefox again, deleted the earlier version, and now firefox is working properly.

  • How do I save files in the dock?

In Preview, I'm reviewing and going back and forth between PDFs and some jpegs. When there are several I don't need at the moment, I sometimes minimize them to the dock. Is there a way to take all the minimized documents and simply save them to a new folder (maybe on the desktop)?
I thought there should be an easy way to do this...
    Thank you.

No; minimized icons in the Dock are shortcuts and not actual files, and therefore can't be put into a folder.

  • Had an Excel file in the dock. When I restarted  computer a question mark appeared in the dock. I can't find the file. Where can I find what was in the dock on my Time Capsule

I had an Excel file icon in my Dock on the compter. When I restarted my computer a Question mark appeared where the file icon was located in the dock. I need to find that file. I can't locate it either on my computer or on the Time Capsule . Anyone have any thoughts where the actual file may be located?

    Sorry, you lost me.
If the file is on your computer, then you will find it if you open Excel, click the File menu, and click Open Recent.
If you deleted the file before Time Machine saved it, it is gone.
If the file was on your computer long enough for Time Machine to save it, it will be in your Time Machine backups.
Open up Time Machine, wait a few minutes for it to load, and click on All Files on the left side of the window.
Then scan to select a purple bar over on the right hand side of the window to select a recent date when you know that the document was on your Mac.
If the document was saved, then you will see it in there somewhere. Click on the file to highlight, then click Restore to bring it back to the present time.

  • Ghost file in the Dock, how to delete?

    Hi!
I recently can see a file in the Download folder in the Dock. I can't see it in the Download folder in Finder. If I try to"catch" it I get a message "The Application can't be found". I find it irritating and would like to delete the file. It is named 4_Kkt409.part, What is a .part file anyway?? Does anyone know?

After some searching on the Internet
I found that the .part file is a partial file from an unsuccessfull download in Firefox. I had a such a week ago. The application Onyx has a cleaning feature for deleting the icon cache from the Dock. It worked. I had to restart and also change the dock settings as I like to have them

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.dock.plist file to the Trash.
