Dragging guides

Hi, I'm trying to learn InDesign and I have the Adobe Indesign CC classroom in a book.
It says that when you want to drag a guide from a ruler you should drag a ruler guide down and the value is displayed next to the pointer while you are dragging it.  That 's not happening.  What am I doing wrong?

So, it makes a guide, but you can't see the X or Y position number updating as you drag? It should be doing that, so does this happen on all documents, or just the one you are working with at the moment? Try with a new document and with a previously-saved doc to see. If it's not working in any doc, try this: Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences

  • Dragging guides out crashes Indesign CC

    Hi,
I've just updated to Indesign CC and whenever I try to drag guides out onto my document the programme crashes. Any ideas?
I am on a Mac Pro 3.1 running Mountain Lion with a quadro 4000

Thanks for getting back to me Michael.
The update appeared in Creative Cloud shortly after you answered and has solved the problem.
Kind of you to assist. Thank you.

  • Dragging guides from rulers in CS6 InDesign

I am unable to get "dragging guides from rulers" when using CS6 InDesign. Is anybody else having this problem?

I tried restoring my InDesign preferences, but it still doesn't work. I used both the Ctrl+Atl+Shift method and the manual method (by replacing the files), but the draggable guides are still not showing. I have made sure to turn guides on in the settings as well. I've looked everywhere online and the only conclusion I can come up with is that it's a bug. By the way I'm using Windows 8. The strange thing is that my Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop are working fine (including guides), however InDesign has been causing problems, so there has to be something wrong with the program. But I don't know what it is

  • Keeping Boxes Active while dragging Guides

I am just starting to use AI CC version 18.0.0. In previous versions (CS 5.5) you could click on a box and the six little boxes would show...one on each corner and two in the middle. Then you could easily bring guides to the center of the box by dragging them to the center boxes. In the new version, the box does not stay active when I drag out a guide. Does anyone have a workaround? Thank you.

    Ava,
It just occurred to me that the issue may be the Live Rectangle bug that is limited to one of the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks), see this thread linked to below.
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1595973
So a switch to Mavericks with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now.
It is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles.
A way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

  • INDD Guides dragged from Ruler stop showing sporadically

Working on a iMac 27.5", Retina, OS 10.10.1 in InDesign CC
Dragging guides from ruler, suddenly the guides stop showing right in the middle of working on a document. And no, I didn't change any preferences or settings. Also, on a multi-page document, the guides will show on one page but not on another.
    Aaaarrgh! Frustrating!!!
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Help?

Is it only ruler guides, and not margin and column guides? And the shortcut Cmd+; (semicolon) doesn't make them hide/and/show?
It isn't because you are in Preview mode, is it?
The only time I have ever had quirky trouble with guides was whenever I made a new document, and in the new document dialog box, I had turned on the Preview switch. If I leave that off, I don't see the come-and-go problem of disappearing guides.

  • Facing issue in PDF print on using Guided Navigation Link on dashboard

    Hi,
I am facing one issue on using Guided Navigation Link on dashboard.
I have created one Guided Nav. Link on dashboard and renamed it as "RAW DATA".
It was working fine.It is coming as RAW DATA link and when I am clicking on the link it is drilling down.
Till now it is working fine and good.
But in Printer friendly option of dashboard when I am selecting PDF option( To save it as PDF) it was showing text "Guided Nav Link 1" instead of "RAW DATA" in the downloaded pdf.
    Please give me some solution.
    Thanks in Advance
    Santanu Manna

    Try this:
    1) Drag Guid. Nav. Link to dashboard in a new section.
    2) Click on properties of the Guid. Nav. Link object.
    3) For the source request, click on browse and navigate to the report.
    4) In the Link Properties, check the "Use Dashboard Oject name as link object" checkbox and click "OK."
    5) Click on the Rename button of the Guid. Nav. Link object.
    6) Type in the name you wish to appear in the link and click "OK."
When you click on Print>PDF, the name of the link will appear in the pdf instead of "Guid. Nav Link 1."

  • Is it possible to lock guides to each other? Or make selections based on guides??

    Hi,
I am curious if there is a way to lock guides to one another.  By this I mean:  lets say I have a guide at 10px down and another at 20px.  I am looking for a way to lock them, so if I move the first guide down 5px the second guide will move with it and continue to maintain the 10px gap.
Also I am wondering if there is a way to make selections based on guides.  For example, I want to make a selection that starts at the top guide and goes to the bottom guide.
Thanks to anyone that can help!
    G

There is no way to link guides directly. Here are some guide tips for you which may help…
    • Setting the ruler increment can be done by control clicking (yes control) on the rulers themselves,
    • Holding down the SHIFT key while dragging guide lines will snap those guides to ruler increments. So if you have pixels selected as the increment as in the tip above you can easily snap quides to 10 pixel steps. Where the guides will snap (how fine the increment) is dependant on how close you are zoomed.
    • As Christoph has said, you can snap to Guides - so in your example a 10 pixel marquee selection, definable in the marquee tool options bar (fixed size) can easily be snapped to a guide, and then another guide can be snapped to that. With the move tool active this is a very easy process

  • Guide behaviour

I do not always like the way guides behave. I would like to see these options:
Option to put guides on dedicated layer automatically.
If this layer is locked it should still be possible to add guides to it, but not to change them without unlocking them.
Option to exclude guides from marquee-style selection (drag selection)
I liked the dedicated guide editor panel in Freehand a lot, maybe something like this could be added to AI as well. (A separate guides layer would go half-way towards this wish.)
The best feature I ever saw in respect to guides comes from a freeware program, Google Sketchup: There is an option to change guides (and other geometry, btw) immediately after creating them by just typing the numerical position value. This would easily work for horizontal and vertical guides, and is *very* handy. Actually, their whole concept to drag guides out of any straight path is quite impressive. Talk about ease of use. (Please note that I do not compare AI to Sketchup as a whole, of course, just this single feature and their general attitude towards usability.)

Blasted blank emails. I tried to edit the blank email and was told I don't have permission to do so.
This is what it should have said:
No Bob. That's a document-wide setting isn't it? This happens inconsistently through the document.
I've got a step closer. At some time in history the document was set up with an A master which simply defined page dimensions, and a B master which added running footers. All the other masters are based on the B master.
If I base the B master on [None] instead of A, and then format the guides in the B master, fewer pages act erratically.
In fact it looks now as if just a couple of pages are misbehaving. These use masters which change the number of columns from the B master they are based on. But another master in the set, which differs only by the running head, behaves properly.
So unless someone can point to a rule that says don't change the number of columns when basing masters on another, this will remain a mystery with somewhat less of an irritation than half an hour ago.

I want to know how to specify a guide position AFTER changing the origin.  I have moved zero, yet every time I drag or specify a guide, it shows or places in the reference to the original origin.  NOT what I expected!  CS6.
That bugs me, too. Thankfully, the X,Y coords in the Info Panel are relative to the rulers origin, but having to watch that defeats the purpose of the pointer coords display.
    Other problems with coords...
The pointer coords display doesn't show when dragging the origin.
"View > Snap To > Layers" and "View > Snap To > Document Bounds" are ineffective when dragging the origin
"View > Snap To > Layers" is ineffective when dragging guides.
For some objects being dragged, the Info Panel coords will go blank when the pointer goes off the canvas.
When a transformation pivot is being dragged, the Info Panel coords do not update. The pointer coords display does update, but as noted above, that does not honour a non-default origin.
(Note to self: stop whatever I'm doing and report these problems as soon as they're noticed.)

  • How to always show rulers in Photoshop CS5 and other problems

Does anyone know how to make Photoshop CS5 always show rulers in mac? I have not have this issue with any other PS. I need the rulers to drag guides contantly, but photoshop cs5 would not show the rulers automatically. Everytime I have to go to View --> Show rulers or the shortcut command + R. Is there a way to instruct Photoshop to always show rules with any file I open or create?
I have many other issues with Photoshop CS5 that CS2, 3, and 4 had out of the box... It is very frustrating that I spent all this money and instead of working, I have been on the phone with Adobe for hours... I am very disappointed so far.
I have had CS5 Master's Collection for 2 months now on Mac 10.6.7. I have reinstalled Photoshop 3 times as some shortcuts were not working like shift plus scroll to inscrease to 100%, 200%, etc.
The other thing that still does not work and Adobe has not offered a solution is that my Photoshop would not append extensions. Regardless of the Preferences settings, all my files get saved as JPG instead of jpg... I wonder if any of you out there have this issue as well?
    Thank you.

I believe my computer and its account are healthy. I just bought the mac pro with solid state and the only programs I have installed are the Master Collection CS5.
I have good news though - After two months of waiting, I was finally able to speak with Adobe specialists yesterday and they changed the shortcut for Save As that Photoshop ships with from Command + Alt + S to Command + Shift + S - and miraculously now Photoshop appends extensions!!!
However, my question about always displaying rulers remains. We got disconnected and I didn't have a chance to ask them (I was on hold for an hour and a half!)

  • New features in Adobe Muse 2.0

The following is a list of features now available in Adobe Muse:
    Align Palette
We've added a new Align Palette, available from the Window menu, or by clicking on the new 'Align' control in the control strip.
You can use the new Align features to align or distribute selected objects relative to each other, or to the page content area (which is the area from the bottom of the header to the top of the footer).
    Asset Upload
You can now link to any external file (i.e. PDF, .zip file, .dmg or .exe) and add a hyperlink to it to enable users to download the file from your web site.
All linked assets will be uploaded / exported along with the rest of the Adobe Muse site, in a new 'assets' folder.
    Code Generation Improvements
We've improved the HTML code generation for Adobe Muse 2.0 in several areas. Shadows, Glows, and Gradients now use CSS instead of generating additional images.
We've eliminated many cases where we generated duplicated HTML nodes. We've also changed our JavaScript framework for our widgets from Spry to a smaller, faster framework called WebPro.
These changes make the export process faster, and Adobe Muse now generates less images and smaller HTML files.
Shadows and outer glows are represented using CSS box-shadows instead of rasterizing.
Fixed the naming of images exported by Adobe Muse which have been either resampled or cropped before exporting.
Background images that have been set to "Scale to Fit" or "Scale to Fill" are now exported with the 'contain' or 'cover' background-size CSS property, respectively.
Browsers display a warning when you serve a page that mixes HTTP and HTTPS content, which can be triggered if loading content from a content delivery network (CDN) such as Amazon's CloudFront. To avoid these warnings, Adobe Muse uses some JavaScript to not use CDN URLs with HTTPS in favor of falling back to a local version of the content.
    Forms
We've added a new Form widget to the widget library.
You can easily configure the form to send the form submissions to multiple email addresses, and optionally redirect users to another page after submitting the form.
You can add and remove fields, and style the form as you would other Adobe Muse elements. You can independently style the various states of the form, and form fields to provide a compelling user experience, with visual cues for error states, empty states, and more.
Because Form processing requires server-side support, Adobe Muse forms are configured to work when published to Adobe Business Catalyst. If you make changes to your form and publish again, Adobe Muse will make the appropriate changes to your Adobe Business Catalyst forms.
Adobe Muse will safeguard data when redesigning your Adobe Business Catalyst forms
If a field with no data submitted is removed, it will be deleted from the database.
If a field that has submitted data is removed, it will be preserved in the database, but can be deleted from the Adobe Business Catalyst admin console if desired.
    Font Improvements
The font UI includes font previews in the form of sample text rendered in the corresponding font/weight/style.
Submenus for the various font types (web, web-safe and system) have been eliminated in favor of a single sectioned list, with shortcuts to scroll to each section.
Web fonts and system fonts are grouped by font family; individual weights and styles (e.g. Bold, Italic, Bold Italic etc.) of multi-face font families appear in sub-menus.
The font UI displays an automatically generated list of recently used fonts. The number of recently used fonts to display can be configured and list can be cleared.
The font list can be filtered by font family (e.g. “Myriad Pro”), weight or style (e.g. “Bold Italic”), a combination of these (e.g., “Myriad Pro Bold Italic”), including partial names in any order (e.g., “It Bold Myr Pro”).
Adobe Muse now uses platform-independent references to fonts, so Adobe Muse documents can be exchanged between Mac and Windows without failure to resolve font references.
Adobe Muse displays localized font names (if available) based on the application locale, rather than system locale. Adobe Muse documents can be exchanged between across application locales without failure to resolve font references.
    FTP Upload
Adobe Muse now includes the ability to FTP to the host of your choice by selecting File > Upload to FTP Host in the Adobe Muse menu.
Adobe Muse's FTP upload dialog allows you to specify the host, subdirectory, and login information.
    Adobe Edge Integration
If you publish an .oam file from Adobe Edge, you can place it into Adobe Muse. All required images, CSS and JavaScript content will be uploaded at Publish or Export time.
As with other placed content any changes made in the source Adobe Edge file and re-saved in .oam format will be detected within Adobe Muse, and you can use the Assets Palette to update the content in Adobe Muse.
    Language Support
Japanese and Italian localizations have been added.
Specific Japanese features include the addition of Japanese web safe fonts on the font menu as well as support for Japanese IME, including text input and double-byte text.
    Ruler Guides
Adobe Muse now includes the ability to drag guides onto a page from the Horizontal or Vertical ruler.
Page items snap to guides when moving, but guides are not exported.
Adobe Muse supports selecting multiple guides on a page.
    Sitemap.xml
Adobe Muse now creates a sitemap.xml file for better search engine optimization when the site is hosted somewhere other than Adobe Business Catalyst. You can exclude a page from the sitemap.xml file (if you don't want search engines to find it) by setting an option in the Page Properties dialog.
    Browser Fill Improvements
You can now set a gradient on the Browser Fill. (Note: Opacity, Focal point and Size are not available due to cross-browser compatibility and usability standards)
In addition, you can now set your browser background image to fit or to fill.
    Control Strip Improvements
The Adobe Muse control strip now has collapsible control sets (similar to Illustrator). As you expand the width of the Adobe Muse application window more controls appear.
Additional controls have been added to the Control strip – States, Transform, and Align. Text controls are now available when text frames are selected, not just when you're using the text tool.
    Drag and drop styles/swatches/colors
You can now drag and drop a Paragraph style or Character style onto a text frame to apply the style to the text.
You can also drag a Graphic style into a page item, or the page to apply it.
You can drag a Swatch onto a page item, page, or browser area of a page to apply background fill.
You can drag a Color (via dragging the color preview area just above the RGB edit boxes) onto a page item, page, or browser area of a page to apply background fill. You can also drag a color to the Swatches palette to create a swatch of it.
    Hyperlinks
The Hyperlink control can now be resized so that users can see entire URL. We've changed the label of the hyperlink option “Title” to “Tooltip” to help clarify where user enters the hyperlink destination information.
    New Selection Visuals
Hint labels now show when you hover over elements on the page. There is a new preference to turn this display off.
Groups and widgets are now indicated with dotted line containment rectangles.
When a page item cannot be resized in a specific direction we now show an “X” instead of a missing handle.
    Widget Improvements
Slideshow and Composition widgets now include a numeric stepper for controlling the Auto Play speed in seconds rather than Off, Slow, Medium, Fast.
We've added Shuffle as an option to the Slideshow and Composition widgets so the slideshow or composition contents play in random order.
Changing a Menu widget from horizontal to vertical, or vice versa, now does a much better job of preserving size and spacing.
Changing the state of one part of a widget at design time now changes appropriate sibling parts to the same state to more closely mimic browser behavior.
Based upon customer feedback, we renamed the following:
"Fit Width" and "Fit Height" to "Uniform Spacing"
"Uniform Width" and "Uniform Height" to "Uniform Size"
    Other assorted improvements
Shift + Return/Enter will create a soft return instead of a carriage return.
Control/Ctrl + Tab activates next tab.
Control/Ctrl + Shift + Tab activates previous tab.
Option/Alt + click a page tab will close all open page tabs.
Option/Alt + click a site tab will close all open sites.
Holding the Shift key down while resizing an image allows you to perform a non-proportional resize.
The X, Y, W, H, and Angle edit boxes support duplicating and transforming the selection if you hold down the Option/Alt key when you hit Return/Enter or Tab.
If you enter a value in an edit box you can do a Shift + Enter to apply the value AND keep focus in the edit box.
Select Same feature added which selects other objects on the page that are the same type as the object currently selected and can be used through Alt Control Shift A and the Context and Edit menus.
Added feedback to rotation tracker so you see the angle next to the cursor as you rotate.
Changed rotation display values to be between -180 and 180 to match other Adobe apps. Previously it was 0 to 360.
Publish dialog has a new FAQ link to help users understand the implications of publishing.
Upload to FTP and Export to HTML workflows now have a ‘Domain Name’ input field. This is used for generation of Sitemap.xml and for enabling Typekit web fonts.
The display of 100% width items on iOS devices is now enabled.
Adobe Muse now produces functional submenus on iOS devices.

Not all of the listed email recipients on my contact form are receiving the inquiries.    Muse allows me to add several email addresses separated by a semi-colon (see below from Corey Wrote) but only one of the three addresses are receiving the contact form inquiries.

  • Are there plans to update livecycle designer to conform with the CC Family of Tools?

I am relatively new to using adobe LiveCycle Designer. I have to say it's a pretty great piece of software.  There are some things in it that really bother me though.
For example, you can't just drag guides from the rulers. There's no smart guides. The shortcuts that work in every other program don't work for LC.
The design is 1990 ish and a myriad of other small annoyances. I was just wondering if Adobe has plans to rework LCD to conform to the CC Family Standards.
Don't get me wrong LiveCycle is the only program in it's class and has been a tremendous help. I just feel it's not up to adobe standards.
Also, Where's the mac version? I've been having to run ES3 in VMWare due to the fact I only wanted LC Designer and not all the other phooey that comes with it.

    Hi,
Designer was initially a product from a company named JetForm which was acquired by Adobe in 2002 and its interface hasn't been changed that much by Adobe.
    Here some hints for you:
If you double click a ruler you'll be able to edit the Drawing Aids.
You can set snap to grid or to guideline etc.
In ES3 and newer you also can activate orientation by page center or other objects which is quite similar to the smart guides you may know from InDesign.
Draging guides from the rulers also works, but only from the upper left corner, not for every ruler separately.
From the Extras menu you also can create your own shortcuts.
There has never been a MAC version of Designer and I think there never be one.

  • Photoshop CS4 constantly crashing in Bootcamp

    Greetings,
I am running Vista 32 on a 15" MacBook Pro through Bootcamp.
I installed CS4 and available updates, and even updated my video driver -- i am using an Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT.
My problem is that Photoshop crashes frequently during such benign tasks as dragging guides, creating new layers, etc, thus rendering the software unusable.
I've searched everywhere for known issues, followed the troubleshooting steps on Adobe's OpenGL and GPU support pages but nothing's seemed to work.
Any guidance offered is greatly appreciated.
    Salvo

Check your mouse settings in the respective control panel! You may just need to lower the speed/ sensitivity. If you are on one of those newer MBPs, you may also need to disable the fancies of the trackpad.

  • How does one "micro nudge" text boxes?

I am creating an extensive form fill-able PDF (a few hundred fields) and am using the "create multiple copies" button. The problem is when I create multiple copies it is impossible to get the fill fields to line up with the actual fields on the sheet (even with changing the height).  I have to nudge them into place but there is normal nudge (arrow keys) and big nudge (shift and arrow keys), but I need a micro nudge. If micro nudge is possible in Acrobat pro what is the keyboard combo? I have tried click and drag with the mouse but 50% of the time I mis-align the fields with the other fields in the columns. Then I have to go through and re-align every field, which is really time consuming. A micro nudge would be the best way to go right now. Thank you ahead of time.
    Bruce

Explore the other positioning possibilities that are available when you select multiple fields and right-click. Things like Distribute Vertically/Horizontally can save a lot of time.
Also, if you display the rulers (Ctrl+R), you can drag guides from them. When you drag a field or field border close to one, the field border will snap to the guide. The exact behavior depends where the cursor is in relation to the field borders when dragging fields.
If you're using Acrobat 11, there are a lot of new keyboard shortcuts that are most not documented as they should be, but you can see a list in this previous post: Re: Acrobat XI switch between form design & form view
