Dragging items in the Timeline

I remeber being able to drag an item in the timeline to make
it longer or shorter and also move it forward or backward in the
timline in verison 1. I cannot seem to do this in Captivate 2. I
have to oepn the item properties to alter the duration or right
click to send fwd or backward.

hello, when I drag a loop from the loop library into a timeline in garageband, the loop will automatically play back at the tempo set up for the project, my question is will a file that is not from the loop library, either a third party loop or an audio file that I create also conform to the tempo set for the project, if I drag it into the timeline. thank you rb

If you drag an external file into the timeline, it will be an orange region and will not follow tempo changes. To achieve that, you have to turn it into a purple region (press control-option-g and click anywhere in the timeline) and check the box "follow pitch & tempo".

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? If you have not already, be sure to update 12 to 12.1, using an opened project's Help Menu/Update.
But to the immediate questions, assuming Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit....
1. No, it is what it is. But, are you applying the same transition each time? If so, then highlight/select all the clips involved (all at one time), then Timeline Menu/Apply Default Transition will do just that for the highlighted/selected clips.
To highlight/select more than one clip at a time, hold down the Shift key of the computer main keyboard and then click on each clip that you want in the group selection
or
with your mouse cursor draw a rectangle around the clips that you want to select
2. Are you using the Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Expert workspace Pan and Zoom Tool? Or the pan or zoom presets under fx Effects/Presets/? With those you can do pan or zoom, not pan and zoom.
Or, are you in the Elements Organizer 12 Slideshow Editor using the pan and zoom effect there? Or, are you using keyframing the Motion Scale property for zoom and the Motion Position property for pan?
Are you asking about photos with landscape or portrait orientation?
The pan and zoom tool does one photo at a time.
Have you read the Adobe documentation on the Pan and Zoom Tool?

If you are using File Vault, turn it off. To find out where all the extra space is use any of these products - Disk Inventory X
OmniDiskSweeper
WhatSize
SpaceControl

How do I keep FCP from auto-distorting my video when I drag it into the timeline?

FCP keeps auto distorting my video when I drag it into the timeline. It keeps setting the motion aspect ratio to -12.5, then when I set it to 0 and render, the video has lost significant quality even though I have my motion render settings to: best. I figure it is this motion distort which is ruining my quality on render because the avi from the camera is ridiculously clean and un-pixelated. How do I keep FCP from auto-distorting my video? It makes no sense that it does, because at -12.5 aspect ratio, FCP is creating a letterbox for my video. I just want the video to fill the entire canvas that I chose! There must be a setting somewhere that I have missed, but I cannot figure it out for the life of me. Please help!
I have a video shot on my Pentax K-r that is 1280x 720p 25fps. When run it in quicktime pro, the inspector affirms this sizing. And in QTpro there is no letterbox present when the original is played.
In FCP I have the sequence settings at:
HDTV 720p (16:9) (which is 1280 720)
Timebase: 25
I have tried to turn anamorphic on, then off in the clip format settings, and also turn the anamorphic on and off in the sequence settings. No combination seems to correct the problem.

Hi I have done some more digging and found this:
1) In the bottom left corner of FCPX, click the film reel so that you can see all your projects:
2) Select the project you are having problems with and then in the inspector window, click on the spanner icon in the lower right side:
3) Finally a window appears so that you can choose the settings for the video you are using:

Sorry if I am saying something obvious, but do you have a project timeline open?
I suggest you look at a good video tutorial to help you get started with FCP X.

Cap2 - Cannot Mouse Drag (extend) items in the Timeline

After Audio has been added to my Captivate file I can no
longer use the mouse to adjust the length of items (captions,
mouse, slide) in the timeline. If I select the item and use the
SHIFT + RIGHT ARROW it will adjust the length. I cannot use the
mouse. I'm WAY faster when I can use the mouse.
Is this a bug? When will it be fixed? This is happening on
every single one of my files, consistently.

I was just now looking at one of my Captivate movies and I
think I may have possibly noticed the behavior you are speaking of.
Here's what I did:
Setup:
Create a blank movie with a single slide. Add three text
caption objects. Adjust the total slide time to perhaps 6.1
seconds. Drag each of the text captions so the end is at 6 seconds.
Now nudge the total slide time back .1 second so the captions are
each ending at the slide end. (I didn't simply drag the captions to
the end of the slide time, as when each would reach the end of
slide time, they would automatically anchor to the end of the
slide)
Now, I simply positioned the mouse pointer at the end of one
of the captions and attempted to drag to increase its display time.
Nothing. End of the caption time refused to budge. I tried the same
in Captivate 1 and could drag freely. So I think I now understand
the issue.
But I may have a workaround for you!
Instead of positioning the cursor and simply attempting to
drag the end of the object to increase the display time, FIRST drag
it slightly to the LEFT to DECREASE the display time. Once I do
this, I can then freely drag to the RIGHT to INCREASE the display
time!

Why can't I drag things to the timeline?

I decided to upgrade to Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 last night after long debate and not wanting to spend the money. Everything is going pretty well now after transferring my project created using Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 into the new program.
But now I just can't figure out why it won't let me drag media, video/audio transitions, or video/audio effects to the timeline or Effect Controls screen. I'm getting the little No Smoking/Ghostbusters symbol next to my cursor when I try to click and drag those items. Can anyone help? I've searched the help file in the program, the Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 Help.pdf file, did numerous Google searches, and searched this Forum.
Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong here? I was trying very hard to not waste anyone's time with a simple question if I could find the answer on my own, but I don't want to waste this entire weekend trying to figure out these problems if there's a simple resolution. :)

Hey! Hang on... I was wrong about the Gspot settings being exactly the same. My newly captured video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 (800MB file size) also says "File Length Correct". My video originally captured in Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 (it says 500MB file size, but it's actually 8.9GB) says:
"Corrupt AVI Header:
This is an invalid AVI file due to corruption of the data in the header. This is a serious problem, and this file is not likely to playable (I'm not the one who typed this sentence all screwy and without end punctuation)
Details: While processing chunk /RIFF:AVI, found bad length value 1069461800 at file offset 0x0000fc94"
Just to check if the other camcorder tape that I transferred in had the same problem, I checked my other video file with a supposedly 1,820MB file size, though it's actually 10.2GB, and that file says "File Length Correct".
So it looks like this is not a file corruption issue with upgrading from Adobe Premiere Element 3.0 to Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, but possibly a corrupt file. However, it works fine now and I haven't come across any video problem yet.
This also doesn't explain the bass boost problem, but I am going to focus on that now.

Dragging clips into the timeline...

I recently installed a trail version of Premiere Pro using Creative Cloud. I imported my MTS files as normal; however, they wouldn't be dragged into the timeline for me to edit and every time (and method) I tried it proved impossible. I then tried importing different file types, but they didn't work either. How do I fix this? I am using a Windows PC.

Dragging video to the Timeline or Canvas from the Viewer

After placing In and Out points in the Viewer, I'm just curious if there is any real benefit to dragging the resulting video to either the Canvas or the Timeline? Is it just a matter of preference? Is one way a better way than the other to get into the habit of doing?

You have control over the track your putting it on if you drag to the timeline. You can also drag it to anyplace in the timeline where if you drag it to the canvas without any in or out point marked in the timeline, it will edit at the playhead. There are probably other differences, but that's what I can think of at the moment.

Controlling where to paste items on the timeline

Let’s suppose you have a timeline twelve seconds wide with two objects. Each object is three seconds in length. The first object is on the bottom of the timeline at the beginning. The second object is on the top of the timeline at the end. You now have a space of six seconds between the objects. Now you want to drop a third object of three seconds in length beginning at the six-second point. The new object needs to be above the bottom object but under the top object. Now let’s say you have ninety seconds of timeline packed with thirty-seven objects and you want to paste a new object in a particular place, say twenty-five seconds in just above layer twelve. How would you control exactly where the object is placed without having to drag it all over the place after pasting?

I almost never use slides that are minutes long, why? And without any user control? Only reason to have a longer slide is when there is an audio clip, and you need to sync with audio. Spreading over multiple slides is much easier to handle and the user will not even see that there is a switch of slides.
And 37 objects: please group them in logical groups, having 37 timelines is not really easy to manage, hope you are labeling each object? And when a group is collapsed everything becomes better structured. You can drag timelines easily to put them in place. Stacking order is only important when those objects are in the same location at the same moment. Is that the case.
Maybe I don't understand your question well, but it seems not to fit quite well with Captivate as I am using it. When debugging, optimizing files I see way too much objects mostly. Why have an image, a text and a click box when you can have the three of them in one shape button? You can show objects for more than one slide (timed for rest of project) if you need them on subsequent slides, which will free up a lot of real estate in the Timeline panel as well.

I am unable to select any title or picture and drag it to the timeline

I was working with this proyect normally and suddenly it stopped me from doing it. Please help!!!
I have the little hand as the cursor, I do not know if that might be teh problem.

iMovie'11 on a mac.... The project is not long at all... just 4 minutes long, only pictures and titles, no videos included. It is very strange, I tried to reset as you said, and it worked perfectly afterwards, now it is doing it again and again, it gets frozen and then I cannot drag the titles or pictures into the timeline above. It is doing weird stuff .... for example, I am working normally in the project and then I add a title, when I play the project the title that I placed appears over a picture... or sometimes it appears completely black. I know I am not adding the title over the picture....so do you think there is something wrong with the app itself?

My video disappears when I drag it into the timeline...

When I drag a video clip into the timeline, only the audio appears. I scrubbed through and the audio plays, and the video didn't so it's not hidden somewhere amongst the clips I've already made. The video plays fine in Quicktime and in the Source monitor within Premiere. Likewise, my co-worker took the same .mp4 and was able to drag it onto a timeline on her computer and this wasn't an issue for her. I've already dragged nine other .mp4 videos into this timeline without issue that all have the same codec and frame rate.
I've tried refreshing the program, my computer, and have tried exporting the .mp4 into a .mov as I've read that worked for somebody else who ran into this issue on CS3. I feel like this is more of a Premiere issue than a video issue. Does anyone have a solution?

very strange. can you confirm you have source patching enabled for your video track?
have you also tried using the insert or overwrite edit commands from the source monitor to bring in the video to the timeline?
