Dragging Photos Around An Album

I have created an album with about 100 photos - and I want to rearrange the order of the photos for a slideshow. I know you are supposed to be able to just drag the photos to where you want them - but for some reason, I can't seem to drag the photos off the window (to the top or bottom) in the album; it seems that the window should start to scroll so I can see where to place the photo. I highlight the photo, click and drag it up to the top the the window, and nothing happens - the screen will not scroll. Usually, that is what happens, but sometimes if I hold the photo at the edge of the window, and wait, the screen will start to scroll. I must be doing something wrong. I apparently could cut and paste, but just dragging would be a lot faster and easier. Any suggestions?

Yes, by experimenting, I figured out that I have to hover with the mouse pointer exactly on the edge of the window - then it will start to scroll. I am used to Windows behavior, when you can move the mouse completely off the window to start scrolling - and the farther you go off, the faster the scroll. Having to be so precise is not particularly user friendly. Thanks for the reply - and I will send in feedback.

Why can I no longer drag photos into an album in iPhoto 4?

iMac G5, OS 10.4.6, iPhoto 4.0. I can't drag any photos from the library to a new album. I was trying to show my wife how to do it (she is a moderate believer) and it didn't work. I have 5200 photos in the library and have had no trouble previously. Do I have a problem with my iMac or am I just not doing something correctly?

There was no "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" in the Library>Preferences.
However, I restarted the beast and am able to work with iPhoto as in the past. My wife was impressed with the help, not with me. Thank you for your rapid response.

Organizing photos in an album

I know this must be very simple. I'm using iPhoto '08 and just want to move photos around within one of my event of photo folders. I have done this in the past by just clicking and dragging the photo to where I want to place it....but this is not working. Please advise.

1 - you posted an iPhoto '08 question in the iPhoto 6 forum - I will request that the thread be moved to the correct forums
2 - iPhoto '08 has events, albums and folders - all are different - and using the correct terminology is critical:
-- Events are basic and you can not rearrange photos in events
-- albums are used to organize photos and you can change the order by dragging photos within the album
-- folders are also organization elements and hold albums or other folders
You are mixing them all up - I suspect that you want to create an album and then reorder the photos in that album

Can't drag photos an event

iPhoto 08 has been loaded and all seems well except for the following
When I try to drag photos around in an event they spring back to their original location. While dragging the number of photos to be draqged (usually 1) is displayed in a red circle.
I have reset each of the three Helvetica fonts as suggested on this forum.
Furthermore when I select View/Sort/Photos, "Manual Drag" and Reset Manual Drag" are dimmed and can't be accessed.
Anyy suggestions?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you've opened an event from the Events window then, yes you can't manually sort as in that mode. To sort manually open that particular event while in the Photo mode with Events titles displayed.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Cannot drag photos from one event to another-

I cannot drag photos between events following the instructions in Help and I cannot drag photos to any album new or otherwise.
This version seems to be not all that great…

I've been using Apple products since '74.
Wow.
I cannot find the photos from another app; i.e., tried to look for the iPhoto folder and found instead an iPhoto file. When the file is selected, selected iPhoto opens. This file must be the phots -- it's 5 GB!
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
Finally, you can drag and drop pics from the iPhoto Window to the addressbook - and many other applications.

Try this general troubleshooting procedure:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

At the moment no, you cannot move photos between albums in the Photos app directly on the iPad - but with iOS 5 (which will be free to download) in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :

In an album (your question subject) you drag photos ot the location you want - in an event (part of your question) you can not manually reorder photos

Cannot drag and drop to Albums when importing photos

When you import images to Photos, you cannot drag and drop the photos to any of your albums. What was Apple thinking by eliminating this organization feature that has been part of iPhoto since 1.0? For example, when you import photos from your SD card (from your DLSR camera), you cannot drag and drop the photos to an album (when you have view sidebar selected). If you select all the images, Photos for OS X will not let you drag and drop them anywhere. Clicking on the selected photos to drag them will only de-select the photo you are hovering over. How stupid is that? How can Apple call that photo management? People organize photos in Albums, but Photos for OS X only wants you to dump them into the program without any organization. In order to drop the photos into an album, you have to import the photos and then click on Last Import. Then select all the photos from that location, and then you can drag and drop them into an album. Totally stupid.

Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

IPhoto - Can no longer drag photos from Library to created Albums..

Up until last week I had no problem dragging photos from my Library to Albums I'd created on the right side. All of a sudden I can no longer drag photos and have to put photos in Albums by clicking on desired photos and creating Album with + button on bottom right corner. Why doesn't it let me drag photos anymore??

I can't tell you why this is happening but I can offer up a possible solution. Sometimes the preference folders associated with applications become corrupted. Here's how to fix that. Locate this file and drag it to the Trash: com.apple.iPhoto.plist It's here: /Home/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder and drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Launch iPhoto and see if you can drag photos from the Library to an album ... Don't worry... your Mac will create a new preference file for you.

I never had this problem in previous versions of iPhoto.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the link to the original file.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Can't drag & drop photos within an album in iPhoto6

I can't change the order of photos in an album by dragging. Looking at the other posts, I've fixed the Helvetica bug several times (by re-activating the font in Fonts Book) but it still doesn't work. When trying to drag, the photo will migrate to a strange place within the album, or not at all. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your replies, TD. They are ordinary albums. I haven't made any smart albums yet. It's strange, sometimes when I'm trying to relocate a photo I'll see the cursor flash in another place on the page and the photo will migrate there. Sometimes there are no cursors at all.

Dragging photos to folder when creating an album

I received an email with photos that I dragged to Iphoto dock. The pictures appear in my photos but I am unable to drag them into the folder that I have created for an album that I am trying to put together and purchase from apple.

We may have a terminology issue here
The window on the left the the source pane - the source pane contains folder if they exist and albums and keepsakes (especial kinds of albums)
Photos go into albums - albums may then be placed in folders - the photos for keepsakes are in albums - not in folders
To add photos to a keepsake albums drag them from an event in the library on the right to the keepsake album on the left
