Dragging photos to email them gives recipient error

Just upgraded to Yosemite 10.10 and iPhoto 9.6 (910.29), both current as of this writing.
I did what I often to do email a photo: selected it in iPhoto and dragged the image to the Apple Mail icon. The picture appeared normally and emailed normally, but I got an error from the recipient, who said the "attachment was unavailable". I have double-checked that the picture is OK. And, of course, it works just fine to send it to myself.
Thanks for advice.

I tried exporting the picture and then explicitly mailing it; I also used the Mail media browser.
Sounds like it's not really my problem. The recipient uses Yahoo Mail, which instead of showing a preview as normal, shows a blank box, but gives her the option to download the picture, which can be downloaded and then separately viewed.
So something changed, but I'm not sure whether it had to do with the changes to Mail in Yosemite or a coincidental change with Yahoo Mail.
Thx anyway.

Hello bendercm, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• I created documents in Word and when I email them the recipient cannot open them. Can you tell me why?

OK, I'm new at this so here goes.
I created some documents in Word and when I email them, the recipient canot open them. Does anyone know why? How do I fix that.

Make sure you have removed the tick for hide extensions in the save as panel and for best compatibilirty choose the format as Word 97-2004 (.DOC) or better still Rich text format (.RTF)
If the extension is not appended any one with a Windows PC will be unable to open the document.
Windows is dumb and without the extension doesn't know what programme is supposed to open the file !
That said they CAN add the extension themselves if they know what application created the document in the first place.
Also in the mail app click on the Edit menu at the top of the screen scroll down to attachments and in the pop out menu make sure Always send windows friendly attachments is ticked.

• Can't Drag Photos Into Email

I have '09 and use Entourage as my email client. For some reason when I updated to '09 I can't drag photos into an open email.
Not sure if it's an issue with Entourage or iPhoto, but it did work fine prior to my upgrading.
Any suggestions??
Also, aside from beginning an email from iPhoto what is the best way to add pictures to an existing (fwd.) or new email not originated from iPhoto??
Much thanks in advance.

Any of the Following:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

• I am unable to upgrade iphoto 8.12 to access photo streaming.  It gives an error message when I try to update

Icloud shows photo stream not available since it states it needs Iphoto update required
I go to Learn More next to the message
It brings me to : Support/apple.com/kb/ht4906  iPhoto and Aperture: using Photo stream
"IF YOU ARE USING AND EARLIER VERSION OF IPHOTO 9"
There is a link to Mac App Store for update
It brings me to iphoto:  Are you sure you want to subscribe to this photo feed?  I hit Subscribe
A popup comes up:
There is a problem with the subscription
Request to the server Macappstore://showUpdatespage failed.
I hit Ok (my only choice)
And I am at iphoto.
What is the fix?
I have spent many hours.

If you have iPhoto 8.x and want to access photostreaming, you need to buy iPhoto 9 from the App store or buy the iLife '11 package. Have you already purchased iPhoto 9 from the App store?

• Since installing Maverick, speed has slowed down considerably. Not able to export photos form email to iphoto. What is going on?

Since installing Maverick, speed has slowed down considerably. Not able to export photos form email to iphoto. What is going on?

When did you install?
Spotlight will need to re-index the entire system so that can cause slow performance if you updated recently. It can take many hours on a large disk with a lot of data. Click the Spotlight menu, it should say if it is still indexing.
There is no point trying to fix anything whilst this is ongoing, because it may just speed up when complete.
Are you able to drag photos from email to the Desktop or to iPhoto's icon? How about the 'File menu > Save attachments' option?
Please clarify what you have tried, otherwise we may waste time on the wrong thing.
If the system is generally unstable there are other things to try too, such as safe boot.
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
That will isolate all third party software, if the Mac is able to do the things that didn't work it suggests that you have software that is loading at startup or login. The easiest way for us to see these is if you download EtreCheck & generate a report.
Post the report here & we can try pointing to items that you can either update or remove.

• Icloud photo library won't work unless connected to wifi.  If I am trying to attach a pic to a message or email, I get the error "photo can't be downloaded from iphoto library, please try later." If I connect to wifi it works just fine.

If I am trying to attach a pic to a message or email, I get the error "photo can't be downloaded from icloud photo library, please try later." If I connect to wifi it works just fine.  If it's truly "storing" a low res version on my phone it shouldn't have to download anything.  I can understand the uploading of pics to library only being done over wifi, but there are plenty of times I'm going to want to send a pic when I'm not going to be near a network.  It does work occasionally, but the norm is that I get the error.

Hi Ed,
There is issue with Windows 7 when you send the email. It gives the message you specified.
But you can always use Adobe Email client to send your images. In this workflow also you would get the error message but you can ignore it and continue to send the mail.
Thanks,

• Photos not showing up in recipient's email-Please help

I have been using iphoto '08 without problems. Today I decided to try for the first time to send an email to my brother with recent photos. In iphoto I highlighted 4 photos to send, clicked the email icon at the bottom right of the window, chose my file size, composed my message, and hit send.
My brother replied that he got the email, but instead of seeing the photos, all he could see were the photo file names (DCSN 145, etc.). I tried 3 different times to resend--each time making the photo file size smaller and smaller (he thought maybe the files were too large for his network). This did not work.
Finally, as FYI, I initially tried sending the photos to him by composing a new message using the Mail program and then choosing a stationary template. I dragged photos to the template, composed my message, and hit send. He wrote back saying that he got the message but the photos were blank. It was at that point that I decided to try and email the photos directly from the iPhoto program (and ultimately to no avail). When I look back at my Sent emails, I can see the emails sent to my brother and the photos do indeed show up in them.
Ideas??????? Thanks.

At a guess you had the Size drop down in the Mail window set to small.

Hi Frank: After you have selected the photo for the email and started to compose the email, check on the right  side of the window. There it will show the image file size, tap there and it will give you options for the photo size. Hope this helps.

Are you using Yosemite and not apple's Mail app? Then you may need to set up an app-specific password: See the post below:
Re: I am using iPhoto version 9.6 and I can no longer get an email sent with a photo attached. I get an error message saying the email did not go through because the server did not reply. I can send the photo with Mail. Help!in response to Gary Kissler
This solution is for those of you using 2-step verification for your Apple ID and are using iCloud as the mail server that you are trying to mail photos with.
I too had this issue. The problem in my case occurred because I had setup 2-step authentication for my Apple ID. If you have done this then you will get the error message "the mail server did not recognize your email/password...". To solve the problem go to:
https://appleid.apple.com
Click "Manage Your Apple ID"
Verify your identity with the device you selected (if this step does not show up then you have not likely set up 2-step authentication and this is not your solution)
Click Password and Security in the left column
Click Generate an app-specific password
Enter iPhoto as the name of the app
Copy the password and paste this into the password box in iPhoto where you would normally enter your apple ID (in the mail account section in iPhoto preferences).
And...voila' (I hope)

Thanks Larry, I am using the default account that was used by the previous version of iPhoto, I did not change any settings when I installed 11. The program deos not seem to give me an option to use an alternate. When I try to send photos I receive a message that the program does not recognize my username/password as follow;
"The email server didn’t recognize your username/password combination."
