Dragging tabs from safari

Safari has been very slow lately and the thing ive noticed most often is when I have multiple tabs open and I want to drag one into its own window it takes around 10 seconds for the tab to turn in to a new window. It is extremely delayed and it never used to be and several other peoples macs seem to be fine when doing this function. does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?

Yes.
Install the v10.6.4 Combo Update
It's ok to do this even if you are already running v10.6.4
Then repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
*Something to check before you do that*. Open a Finder window. Select your user account in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder then the Internet Plug-Ins folder.
If there are any third party plug-ins that folder, move them to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari.

  • Dragging tabs causes Safari to quit/SIMBL

For some reason, whenever I drag around tabs (such as dragging a single tab window into a two tab window to make a three tab window), Safari quits. I'm not sure why this is. It could be because I recently downloaded a few Safari add-ons, specifically these ones:
    http://safariaddons.com/en-US/safari/
but I got rid of all of them and I still have the problem. I also restarted the computer.
On a similar note, does anyone know how to use this add-on:
    http://hetima.com/safari/stand-e.html
    These are the steps given:
    - Install SIMBL 0.9.5 or later <http://culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php>
    - Quit Safari.
    - move "SafariStand.bundle" into your SIMBL plugin folder.
    * Result path is "/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/SafariStand.bundle".
However, after downloading SIMBL, the SIMBL folder under Application Support does not show up. Any ideas?

    Thank you Carolyn,
My machine is a late 2009 iMac, a replacement for another that had run Tiger. Some of the cruft I am dealing with was migrated over from that time.
Your reply, however, tells me that the problem is (probably) due to a conflict between the new version of Safari and some plug-in or extension for Safari 6.05 that I am using now. As for sending the "entire crash report" it is my ardent wish never to see one of those again.  The two restore sessions already done have increased the bulk of recent Time Machine data to the point that the earliest I have is less than a month old on an external HD that is much bigger than the internal drive.)
I might be willing to risk another update/crash if I could first reduce Safari 6.05 to the plain vanilla state that should update successfully.  Otherwise I will carry on until all the housekeeping is done and then update to Mavericks.  ....
(Long time out while this site did maintenance)  ....
I have now found lots of instructions for removing or disabling plugins or extensions.  I tried simply disabling from Safari > preferences > security > (or) extensions and Safari became quite unresponsive to the point that I could not seem to reply to this post.

  • Can't drag images from safari into songs as covers anymore

hey i got an issue, i guess it's because of itunes 9.02 because yesterday it worked just fine:
i an album doesn't have a cover art i usually go to google image search, find the cover and then drag it directly to the song.
for example i select all tracks from an album, hit cmd + i, then i drag the cover art from safari to itunes and drop it. until yesterday itunes perfectly took the cover art and applied to the track,
since i downloaded itunes 9.02 it doesn't work anymore.
btw, when i drag the image to some place in the finder and then drag it onto the song it still works.
    can anyone confirm that?

Same problem. I thought it might have been a Safari security thing until I tried other browsers with the same problem. Like you said... Dragging from the browser to a staging location like the desktop first and then from the desktop to iTunes work just fine. Odd.
I'm looking around for some new iTunes security option. Minor bug but it's really messing with my workflow.

  • Dragging url from Safari to Mail creates web shortcut attachment

I was accustomed to dragging the url from Safari's address bar into an open mail and getting a page title and url text inserted.
This was incredibly useful for sending links of pages to mailing lists in response to questions.
Now in Leopard, dragging the url from Safari's address bar to an open mail creates a web shortcut attachment.
I can see this might be useful , but in a plain text email to a mailing list it's completely useless as it gets stripped my the mailing list software.
now I have to copy and paste the url - a lot more effort and I don't get the page title anymore that way.
Please tell me there's a hidden preference setting that can let me have the old way back...
this tiny little thing is marring my otherwise happy upgrade to 10.5
I just checked this action in my virgin Tiger install on my Mac Mini and dragging from Safari to Mail, gets a plain text url, but no page title, so maybe I had some helper or other adding that little bit...
anyway, I want to drag urls to mail and get text not attachments - can anyone help me?
    thanks

I'm used to doing command-L to select the address bar, so to do command-L, command-C, click in the mail message, and hit command-V doesn't seem like much work. But that's me. I also found that if I drag a URL from the address bar it does put the link in without a web shortcut. But if I wanted to send a link in an email, I'd just hit shift-command-i, which opens a new mail with the link in it.
    Just some thoughts....

  • Dragging items from Safari windows

I drag items, such as images, links, text clippings, etc. from Safari windows to the Finder or to Mail all the time. There's probably a concise name for that feature, but I can't think of it at the moment. Anyway, sometimes it simply refuses to work; the item visually snaps back to its position on the page (or the address bar) as soon as I let go of it. Often, if I go elsewhere (such as, for example, here to ask a question about it) and come back later the problem is gone. Any idea what causes this? It's been going on for years, in every then-current software version, though I admit not having tried 10.6 yet.

Sorry, I should have been clearer: the exact same thing that will drag to another window normally, sometimes won't. And then it will again later. The particular item that got me to post was the URL in the address bar; I opened a new window and found this board, then went back to the other window which I had not touched in the meantime and was able to drag the address to the desktop again. And since posting, I've found it's not limited to Safari, so perhaps this wasn't the best place to post. It's nothing serious, just really annoying.... when it happens at all.

  • Dragging tabs from tab bar issue in Safari 4.0.3- PLEASE HELP!

Whenever I drag a tab out of the tab bar to make it open in a new window, it shows the window thumbnail and will not open in a new window (hangs up). Yes, I am letting go of the trackpad and it still does not work. I have tried removing the Safari plist and still no work. Any ideas?

    Hello c:
I admit I am confused and apparently missing something. While what you describe works here, why don't you just click on the tab to open the associated window?

  • Drag File From Safari Download Window to Other Volume - Moves not Copies File - Bug or Feature ?

    Hi,
Appreciate comment on what I thought was unusual Mac OS behavior.  Running Safari 5.1.5, OS 10.6.8.
Mac OSs in my experience copy a file when it is dragged and dropped to another volume/drive. (Let's leave classic desktop out of this.)
It may be the first time I've ever done it in any version of Safari, but just dragged a file directly from the Safari Downloads panel onto another drive's icon - and it appeared to "move" the file from its original download destination to the other drive and not simply copy it onto the other drive.
Didn't look like a copy and standard Finder delete since I didn't see file in the trash, although it was gone from the finder window for the download folder (Desktop in my prefs), and afterwards Safari Download Window magnifying glass icon "can’t show the file “filename” in the Finder because “filename” has moved since you downloaded it." It's reproducible.
Assuming it's not unique to my configuration, is this a bug or "feature" ?
    Thanks.

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the General tab.
You can deselect: Open "safe" files after downloading.

  • Dragging tabs from one Terminal.app window to another

In Safari, you can drag a tab off and "tear" it off from one window to another. Is there a way to make that work in Terminal.app? It doesn't seem to work on my end with Leopard OS X 10.5.5.

    g-pod wrote:
That worked, thanks! I see what happened now. I tried to detach the tab by dragging the tab upward instead of downward, but didn't drag it up far enough for detachment.
I discovered the "bug" with Safari - about dragging "up."
I used the two tab example because it works more easily. But dragging "up" works even when the target terminal has no tab. It's a cool thing
I suspect that the tab portion of termina (or Safari) only opens when "attacked" from below.

  • Dragging images from Safari to Desktop, image goes to random location

    Hi Everyone,
Problem is being experienced on a Retina MBP, in a laptop-screen + 2 more setup: one through Thunderbolt to DVI, and the other using HDMI to DVI.
It's pretty easy to reproduce.  I open Safari up, not fullscreen, and drag an image that's in the browser (e.g., a picture in a Google images search), onto a specific space on the desktop.  When I let go, it saves, but the icon for that image on the desktop is anywhere _but_ where I dropped it.  It seems purely random, I can't establish a pattern.
From hereon it it's probably venting, so I'll spare you guys!
My desktop view options are set to "Sort By: None".
    Screen 1: 15" Retina MBP
    Screen 2: Dell LCD 1680x1050
    Screen 3: Dell LCD 1680x1050
I don't experience this when not in multi-monitor mode.  Using any of the external monitors, be it one or two, seems to be a part of the problem.  Could this be a bug to do with Safari, retina, and external displays?
    Thanks.
    Alex

Control click a clear space on your desktop then click Sort by > None

  • Whenever I drag photos from safari to my desktop, it keeps on auto-arranging them. I've tried checking the arrange to none view option but it doesn't seem to work. HELP, PLEASE?

I just want them to stay exactly where I dragged them on my desktop. Can anyone help me on this. It's starting to get really frustrating.

Can't find the "sort by" option. I've tried the view options and clicked "none" in arranged by section as I've seen in forums, but still doesn't work.

  • Is there a way to drag tabs like Chrome?

I recently migrated from Google Chrome to Firefox, and so far I like it. I want to be able to drag tabs like in Chrome but in Firefox, add-on or not. With Chrome, when you left click on a tab and move it vertically, the tab minimizes so that you can drag it into another instance of Chrome. However in Firefox, if I have two instances of Firefox running and want to take a tab into the other, when running fullscreen, you can't view the other instance. I tried looking for an add-on to the best of my ability but I had no luck.
    Chrome: http://i.imgur.com/sjZgDA5.jpg
    Firefox: http://i.imgur.com/llZ0EYn.png

Firefox does this sort of thing by default.
    Tabs will
    * '''drag from one window to another''' see additional notes under
*drag along the tab bar to another position
    * on to the desktop to create a shortcut
** but to do that you drag the icon from the location bar not the tab
    * open in a new window, to do that drag them down or use a right click option.
** note move to group option also from right click

    You say
''I have two instances of Firefox running and want to take a tab into the other, when running fullscreen, you can't view the other instance.''
I assume that you mean you have two separate Firefox windows open (slightly different from two instances of Firefox)
    # reduce the size if you wish to move tabs between the two windows
    # drag tabs from one to the '''tabs bar''' of the other, and insert it between or adjacent to an existing tab
    * note it is not possible to drag the last tab off a window. A window needs at least one tab (open a new blank tab as a workaround if you wish to move the last remaining tab)
Please post back with how you get on. It may be a little confusing using a new browser and I am not sure if I have explained the things you need to know or not.

  • Shortcut for going from Tab to Tab in Safari 4.0.3?

    Hello folks,
Is there a shortcut to use for quickly going from open tab to open tab in Safari 4.0.3 without using the mouse to click on the open tab?
    Thanks

You're welcome. This tip has nothing to do with the keyboard, but its graphic effect is kind of neat:
To open a tab in a different Safari window, place the pointer over the tab and drag it to another Safari window or to the desktop.
...So a tab can be removed from a Safari window by dragging it out — and then later, in the same way (by first dragging it out of its new Safari window), put back into its original Safari window.

  • Problems opening a New Tab in Safari from Bookmark Bar Folder

When I am in Safari and attempt to Open a link to a new tab from the Bookmark Bar that is part of a Folder on the Bookmark bar it does nothing.
I can change the preferences to auto-click for the Bookmark Folders, but then every link loads when I try to access the folder from the Bookmark Bar. Very cool to see lots of pages loading at once, but not what I'm after. Doesn't seem to be a way to just load 1 link from the folder
If its a single link on the Bookmark Bar that has not been organized into a Folder it does work.

You know what? - my Safari works just the same way.... but I'd never noticed before.
I've used apple-click to open single bookmarks from the bar, many times. But have always ( for no particular reason) opened a new tab first ( apple-T ) if I've been looking for bookmarks within a folder.
