Dragging to desktop. name changes?

I spent about 2 hours naming all my photos in iPhoto.
Now when i drag them from iPhoto to the desktop, the name changes to DSC''xxx'' (xxx = random numbers). The name changes from lets say, 'Bridge' to 'DSC008'. The names go's back to one that the camera named it.
Why cant i have the names i give them in iPhoto?
*nathan

The name of the original file is never changed. Only those copies that you export using the Use Title option will have the new name. So you'll have to use the export method each time you want files with the titles as file names.
To make assembling the photos you want to export a little easier you can create an album and put them in there. That is one way to consolidate them into an easily accessible area.

  • Connection Errors to Remote Desktop from OSX after Domain name change

We have an issue using Microsoft Remote Desktop from Macs in our school. All was well until we changed the domain name of our RDS servers and installed a new wildcard certificate. Connections work perfectly in Windows 7/8 and also iOS on iPads, but we cannot
get any Macs to connect having tried OSX 10.7 and 10.9. The error message says the connection failed to load but seems to add a spurious end to the connection string - TS/en-US/Default.aspx - but we cannot trace where this is being picked up.
We can get to the site in a web browser and sign in to receive the "browser not supported" message in Safari so traffic is obviously getting to the severs.
Has anyone else had a similar issue? We have spent days poking around with DNS etc but can't seem to make any progress here.

    Hi Jeremy,
I have tried removing connections and also re-installing the App. We have been using this App since January with no real issues until we made our domain name change - I really don't understand why it works fine in Windows and iOS but not OSX. We are doing
nothing different to what we have done from day 1.
Log file from our old connection when it was working looked like this:

  • Any idea why my desktop drive name changed to '\

    Hi.
Just sat down to do some work for the first time in two days and noticed that an external drive on my iMac and a desktop folder have had their names changed.  The drive changed to '\ and the folder changed to \
I found my 3-year-old noodling on the keyboard for a few seconds earlier in the day, but don't think that's it.  The two new names seem ominously similar and suspicious.  The folder was no problem -- I just created a new folder with the old name, copied my files to it, and then trashed the one with the changed name.  The hard drive will not let me change its name, however.  I can click on the name field, but when I start typing, it tabs to the next item on the desktop.
I restarted, ran Disk Utility to verify the drive in question, and repaired permissions on the internal drive.  I do think I have one tiny bad spot on this external disk, but it's been working fine otherwise and I have it backed up.  But regardless, this wouldn't explain why a totally unrelated folder on my desktop suffered a similar fate.
Any ideas what caused this, whether I can change the name back, or if it's going to cause problems down the line if I can't?
    Thank you.

Do you have children or a cat? I found the same thing after my grandson visited not long after he reached the "mobile" stage. A few minutes banging on teh keyboard of my wife's iMac left the hard drive with an odd character for a name.
Cats are more computer-literate that many people think. When they walk across the keyboard, they seem to know exactly the right keystrokes to make you computer do odd things--if you are lucky. If you are not lucky, cats know how to leave remnants of meals past of worse on a keyboard.

  • E-mail Attachment Name Changes

I have a following problem with mail attachments: When I drag the attachment from my mail window onto my desktop, the attachment name changes to "unknown". So for example, "cat.jpg" would become "unknown.jpg". To make this a bit more complicated, the problem is a bit random and from this it follows that sometimes the file keeps the original and correct file name and sometimes it changes it. Also, this problem occurs only when I drag the attachment (which normally is image) from email window, but if I pull the attachment from above the message window, where it has a little arrow and it shows all the attachment icons, this problem does not happen. I am running Tiger and Mail 2.1. It would we really great if you could take a sec to answer this if you have any idea at all what this problem might to be. Thanks!
    Best, Rauno

Hi Rauno, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Hmmm, since it's random, might try this...
Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop then reboot...
First, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these files to the Desktop.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail
    Move to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
You can always move them back if it doesn't help.

  • "Macintosh HD" name changed on its own, is this a virus?

    Hey everybody,
for some unknown reason my Macintosh HD in the finder and on my desktop changed names from "Macintosh HD" to "are you gone now". There is no possible way I did this, and no one else had used my computer. Everything else seems normal, but I was concerned that this could be a virus or something. I have not heard of any serious Mac OSX viruses before, so I am hoping this is some random thing. I am running latest version of Leopard, and the name change occurred on May 13. Has anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks for the help

It sounds as if the MBA user has been using his Mac foolishly, by downloading applications from a p2p service. That is a very high risk activity that will compromise any computer's security. I don't know if your Mac could have become infected through the MBA. It seems unlikely, but I can think of no other explanation.
Back up all your user files. Time machine should be fine for this, but a simple drag & drop of all your documents to a burned DVD or external drive would be easy too.
Then completely reformat and reinstall everything from scratch on both computers. Reinstall your third party apps from the original CDs or fresh downloads only. DO NOT restore any applications or system components from your backups, unless you are 100% sure you are retrieving them from a backup made before the intrusion began. Only recover your personal data from backups.
Change all your passwords. Don't use the admin account for anything except tasks that really need it (of which there are very, very few.)
Make sure the MBA user gets a lesson in safe computing. NEVER download any software from a p2p service.
Are you absoutely certain that the MBA user is not playing a practical joke on you?

  • I upgraded to Lion and since then my desktop graphic changes back to the Lion 'default' desktop graphic every time I start up.  I change it in System preferences, but next start up it is back to the default.

This problem just started when I upgraded to Lion OSX 10.7 and it makes no sense.  When the new OS was installed, it replaced my Desktop graphic with a blue background starry asteroid like you see in the Lion promos.  I went to System prefeences and changed it back to what I had, and it switches just fine, but when I shut down and restart, my graphic is gone, the old asteriod thing is back again.  I don't like looking up at my name on the screen where the clock is supposed to be either, but I will get over that since I can't change it.  I do want to know if anyone knows how to make your graphic for the Desktop stay the same through shutdown and restart, it is something so basic. I'd appreciate any help, Thank you!

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • How to Customize Desktop Names in OSX Lion?

I upgraded my os from Leopoard to Lion couple days before,
This new system is generally amazing, however, the desktop names is sometime complicated and confusing,
especially when I'm managing too many windows and tasks at the sametime
all of them are shown as desktop 1, 2, 3, 4.......and so on.
Obviously , this EYECANDY upgrade weaken its usability,
before, at least, when it's still leopoard,
i need only one combo stroke(control + <-- or --> )to change my desktop in spaces mode,
spaces is not intuitive but can be functionally remembered in mind.
now, i have to press F3 and then select from  such messing screenshots without a clear name?
well, if there do have some ways to customize them,
    i could rethink about it.

  • Authentication popups after computer name changed to computer record name

    Hi
I'm not sure if anyone else is facing this issue, but I have been unable to find anything in the forums.
I have setup a number of client machines on Lion Server, all using 10.7.4. I used WGM and Remote Desktop to make some changes and deploy software
Since then, I have been getting the following authentication popup on all client machines (twice after login, and then every 30 mins or so afterwards):
Mac OS S wants to make changes. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
The changes made prior to this happening were:
    - Overplay VPN installed (using RD pkg install)
    - Adobe CS 5.5 installed (using Adobe Enterprise Deployment Tool and RD package install)
    - Evernote installed (using RD copy)
    - Set computer name to computer record name (From WGM > Computer Groups > Preferences > Options)
I have now removed all the installed software from one machine, and log in as administrator, unbind the machine, rename the computer manually to the record name, rebind the computer.
As far as I can see, I have reverted all changes one at a time, and am still receiving the admin password requests when logged in as a network user.
The only machine that seems to be ok, is the one where the name change to computer record name was unsuccessful.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks
    Suraj

Issue resolved. It turns out none of my changes caused the issue as much as Google Chrome Autoupdates. The new version constantly checks for updates which makes clients on Lion Server go haywire. Solution to turn off auto-updating:
    Open a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
    Relaunch Chrome.

  • Accidental Volume Name Change

Today we had an unwelcome name change to our raid array. The name was changed when unwelcome visitors fingered the keyboard and replaced the name of the volume with spaces. This immediately effected all managed computers attempting to access the mounted share points or their profiles upon login.
The name the desktop has been restored however attempting to review the share points the following message appears. The Selected Share point could not be found.
One or more items have been moved, renamed or deleted. Restore the names and locations of the Items in the path.
When examing the name of the mounted volume with Disk Utility the mount point appears as VAULT_1 when the finder displays VAULT
    Any suggestions ?

yes, a disk drive mounts under /Volumes/ and WGM creates sharepoints there so for example, u have a HD called Store, it will be
    /Volumes/Store
and the sharepoint will be Store, but
if the name changed to Stores then the original share Stores will still be there in Volumes so u will get
    /Volumes/Store
    /Volumes/Stores
if your rename Stores back to Store, it will apear on the desktop as Store but because there is already a /Volumes/Store path then it will be renames
/Volumes/Store_1 i.e the second HD with that names,
All shares will point to /Volumes/Store
now to fix this you will need to do this
remove the folder called /Volume/Store which is the old share point path and is now a folder not a drive path
rename your HD to Store and reboot
Store will then be correctly mounted as
    /Volumes/Store
and all share points should now work again.
ive done this a few times myself.

  • Botched short name change attempt has left me with no permissions! Help!

Early on, my MacBook Pro's hard drive ground to a halt and I had to fork out to get it restored. When it came back, my administrative account was no longer named "Will", but "macbookpro".
I changed the username simply, but was always bothered by the home folder being called "macbookpro". After buying a WD MyBook and backing up my "macbookpro" user folder with the WD Anywhere application, I (stupidly) decided to follow an outdated Apple guide ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428 ) on how to change the short name via Terminal and root - something I now realise is no longer necessary in Leopard.
When adding the new account to replace "macbookpro" with, I couldn't, as the existing account had the username I wanted already, just not the short name. I changed what I thought was the username for what I thought was a temporary amount of time from "Will" to "William", so they had different names and I could proceed.
I followed the rest of the guide up to the point where I log on as new user. Forgetting I wasn't finished, I fired up Adium - which acted like it had never seen me before (something I don't really mind), and to this moment it has refused to sign in to MSN, but does AIM perfectly.
After being puzzled by Adium I continued the process, finding not "the keychain, which should still have the short name of the original user", but "login.keychain" - I left it.
Giving up and continuing to use my computer, I attempted to update Camino by downloading the latest version whilst simultaneously resetting all of my Application preferences to how they were before.
On dragging Camino to Applications, I was told I did not have sufficient privileges to do anything but view it. Everything except what is in my new home folder is read-only.
Sharing and Permissions shows me that macbookpro is the only account with jurisdiction over Applications - Read & Write, whereas groups "admin" and "everyone" are Read only.
For most other files, "system" and "admin" have Read & Write permissions, except in the System folder where only system has, whilst "wheel" and "everyone" can only read.
In my panic, I renamed "William" to "macbookpro" again, meaning that when I log onto my (now completely reset and devoid of preferences) original macbookpro account, I have my permissions mostly back.
You'd think I would then simply revert to using macbookpro and changing all my preferences, using the Leopard short name change - but "macbookpro" doesn't seem to be able to open ANY applications. At all. For no good reason.
Short of going through every single file on the hard drive manually and changing the permissions to allow "Will" to read and write, I can't solve this!
This puts a massive hindrance on my use of this computer, and I don't want to edit permissions on each file as I need it and then discover the only solution is to completely restart!
    Please, somebody help!

If anybody ever has a similar problem, here's how I solved it as best as I could:
http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/Welcome.html BatChmod is a tool for batch editing file permissions.
It fixed my Applications and Library, and I can now read and write to both folders.
I dragged solely the contents of Application Support from my backup over the existing Application Support folder within my user's library, and that restored a few, but not all, of my Application Preferences.

  • Harddrive (start up disk) name changed

Why would the harddrive (start up disk) name change (on desktop) to an unrecognizable number/letter combination? Is it a virus?

Extremely unlikely that you have any sort of malware causing this. (Malware affecting Macs does exist, but no known viruses do, & the rare, existing malware tries to be stealthy to avoid detection.)
More likely: you accidentally changed the startup disk name somehow. Try changing it back & see what happens.
Also, see the second item in the "More Like this" box to the right of this page for more info.

  • Why are my file and folder names changing randomly? (Appending Dates)

Recently Finder has taken to randomly (it seems) appending the date to various folder and file names. For example today I dragged a file from Destop into Documents folder and the file name changed immediately after the move:
    From: wedding-invite.pdf
    To: wedding-invite 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013.pdf
This has happed to folder names as well with different amounts of replication and different dates (usually today's date or document creation date). It happens to some files and folders but not to others. Those that it does happen to have no UNDO trail for the particular action (like Undo Move for example).
Very frustrating - any assistance would be appreciated.
I am running nothiong special (I do run Google Drive on my iMac). Also Time Machine.

Thanks! I found this on the folder actions setup:

  • Volume's name changing after restart

    Hi
I have two volumes on my system. Since I have started using Tiger, when I restart the computer every time one of the volumes is mounted with a different name. I have some internal links, pointing to things in this particular volume and when the name got changed, it's all lost... Can you give me some hints how to solve the problem? The settings seems to be OK and under Panther I didn't have this problem... Thank you!

    pirinlion
The ".DS_Store" keeps information about how a folder is displayed in the Finder, and since it belongs to 501, you ought to get rid of it. Then try changing the name. I'm not convinced this is going to work, but you should do it anyway.
While you're at it you might as well get rid of "Desktop DB" and "Desktop DF" unless you use OS 9 on that disk:
    cd /Volumes/Daten/
sudo rm .DS_Store "Desktop DB" "Desktop DF"The quotes are necessary because of the space in the filenames. You will be prompted for your password after the second command. This is not echoed for security reasons: just type it and press return.
If you still can't make the name change stick, post back with the new name you would like, and we'll see if it can be done from the Terminal.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.
