Dragging url from Safari to Mail creates web shortcut attachment

I was accustomed to dragging the url from Safari's address bar into an open mail and getting a page title and url text inserted.
This was incredibly useful for sending links of pages to mailing lists in response to questions.
Now in Leopard, dragging the url from Safari's address bar to an open mail creates a web shortcut attachment.
I can see this might be useful , but in a plain text email to a mailing list it's completely useless as it gets stripped my the mailing list software.
now I have to copy and paste the url - a lot more effort and I don't get the page title anymore that way.
Please tell me there's a hidden preference setting that can let me have the old way back...
this tiny little thing is marring my otherwise happy upgrade to 10.5
I just checked this action in my virgin Tiger install on my Mac Mini and dragging from Safari to Mail, gets a plain text url, but no page title, so maybe I had some helper or other adding that little bit...
anyway, I want to drag urls to mail and get text not attachments - can anyone help me?
thanks

I'm used to doing command-L to select the address bar, so to do command-L, command-C, click in the mail message, and hit command-V doesn't seem like much work. But that's me. I also found that if I drag a URL from the address bar it does put the link in without a web shortcut. But if I wanted to send a link in an email, I'd just hit shift-command-i, which opens a new mail with the link in it.
Just some thoughts....

  • Drag URL from location bar focuses unwanted tab

In all of the browsers I use, I'm constantly dragging URLs from the address bar to <elsewhere out of the browser, e.g. a folder>.
("Because that's the way I work, that's why.")
In or out of ffox safe-mode, and no matter where I place the tabs bar, if the dragging path crosses a tab (i.e. the tab header where the page title is displayed), that tab is focused i.e. selected AKA activated.
This is often a big performance hit (Definition: more of a hit than I'm willing to sustain), not to mention a d**ned annoyance.
And the re-focus initiates pretty quickly.
I'm not dragging particularly slowly. Definitely not hovering.
I'd be happy even with a solution which simply lengthens the interval before this happens.
I've searched about:config for 'delay', tried changing a couple of <not very plausible> candidates, no joy.
Using ffox 36 after a very long time of not using ffox, so I can't say if this is long-standing ffox behavior.
    TIA
p.s. -- I.T. guy who's been doing this since before the PC/XT. As such, reeeeaallly hoping for zero replies which mention 'reboot', 're-install', 'try older', 'try newer', 'virus', 'new profile', HJT, MWB, etc.

    Fred, cor-el...
Another part of "the way i work" is that most of my windows, and especially the ones i use the most, are placed:
-- tight against the right side of the desktop (actually, a few pixels past), so that i can just slam the mouse (pointer) against that side, and thereby
land squarely on the scrollbar without any fine manual control; and
-- tight against the top, so i can do likewise to bring a partly-covered
window into focus by landing squarely on its title-bar. (The windows are
all kept at dimensions that make them overlap, both left-to-right and
top-to-bottom, so that the lower-left corners tend to form a top-left to
bottom-right diagonal across the desktop. That way i can easily switch to
any window by touching an unobscured part of either its title-bar or its
    bottom border.
The short-and-wide windows are things with a lot of columns, like directory / file trees, spreadsheets, etc., and the tall-and-narrow
windows are the text-dominated apps like browsers and editors.)
I already do leave part of the desktop visible at the very bottom and the
very left. So, i can easily drag links (or other items) from a page (or drag
the URL), either to the desktop or to pretty much any window which i
    have open and un-minimized.
The other factor is this: i keep the "taskbar" configured to appear only when i slam the mouse (without needing careful positioning) against the
LEFT of the desktop (so the window titles are actually wide enough to be
legible) -- and i do likewise for the browser, i.e. have the tab bar on the
left so that the tab titles are wide & legible.
So, it's difficult to do the dragging without either passing over an
unfocused tab, or moving the mouse more slowly and carefully than i'd
rather bother with (to avoid being slowed down). About the only thing
which would consistently work, is to carefully drag to the top (or past
the bottom) of the browser window, without crossing an unfocused tab,
and then to the desired drop-point.
As i mentioned in the O.P., it would be a lot easier if there were some
way to just *slightly* increase the x-millisecond lag between the time
the mouse first crosses a tab, and the time the focus is switched.
As i said, i'm back on firefox (for about 2 months) after a long time away.
And i don't have this problem on other browsers. I don't remember how long the "change-focus delay" was on Opera12 (maybe even infinite),
but I just now tried it on Chrome 32, and it's about 500 msec if i pause
over an unfocused tab, and about a full second if the mouse is constantly
moving -- IOW, plenty of time for me to "pass through the neighborhood"
without having to think about it.
And here's irony: on SeaMonkey (2.33), it doesn't happen **at all**.
Unfortunately, neither Chrome nor SM seem to have a reliable,
non-kludgey way -- not even with extensions -- to have vertical tabs as an
integral part of the browser window.

  • My iPad keeps reverting to the home screen, both from Safari and Mail. ???

My iPad keeps reverting to the home screen from Safari and Mail. ???

Have you tried closing the two apps completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with Safari or Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari and Mail apps to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Dragging items from Safari windows

I drag items, such as images, links, text clippings, etc. from Safari windows to the Finder or to Mail all the time. There's probably a concise name for that feature, but I can't think of it at the moment. Anyway, sometimes it simply refuses to work; the item visually snaps back to its position on the page (or the address bar) as soon as I let go of it. Often, if I go elsewhere (such as, for example, here to ask a question about it) and come back later the problem is gone. Any idea what causes this? It's been going on for years, in every then-current software version, though I admit not having tried 10.6 yet.

Sorry, I should have been clearer: the exact same thing that will drag to another window normally, sometimes won't. And then it will again later. The particular item that got me to post was the URL in the address bar; I opened a new window and found this board, then went back to the other window which I had not touched in the meantime and was able to drag the address to the desktop again. And since posting, I've found it's not limited to Safari, so perhaps this wasn't the best place to post. It's nothing serious, just really annoying.... when it happens at all.

  • Send URL from Safari to Delicious via Applescript

TIP: this will get the url, send it to a window loading delicious api, set the window nicely to a dialog kind of size, tags etc etc. After logged in it will remember the account settings ofcourse...
This is the best option for me as I can try to make it crossplatform. As Firefox 3 has not as much extensions at the moment... yet as well as other beta browsers etc etc
I was searching for a simpel solution yest working and this is working allright.
Next step is a widget for all my bookmarks... sure there is one??? or not...

    Hello Kappy,
maybe my question was misleadingly formulated.
I use Safari (by Apple) on Macbook Air (by Apple) and when sending links I want to use OS Yosemite Mail App (by Apple).
Currently Chrome is opened. I DON'T want to use chrome.
    Mail App INSTEAD of chrome.
I hope this IS the right place to ask the question: How do I teach safari to send mails by the native OS X mail app?

  • URL from Safari won't copy

Sometimes, when I drag a URL from the toolbar in Safari to an open folder, it won't copy - it "bounces" back to the bar. The workaround is to copy to the desktop, then to the folder, which works every time.
Most times copying to a folder, and every time when copying to the desktop, it works fine. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Actually, I may have misspoken. The failures are when copying to an open disk image, not into a folder directly.

  • Can't drag images from safari into songs as covers anymore

hey i got an issue, i guess it's because of itunes 9.02 because yesterday it worked just fine:
i an album doesn't have a cover art i usually go to google image search, find the cover and then drag it directly to the song.
for example i select all tracks from an album, hit cmd + i, then i drag the cover art from safari to itunes and drop it. until yesterday itunes perfectly took the cover art and applied to the track,
since i downloaded itunes 9.02 it doesn't work anymore.
btw, when i drag the image to some place in the finder and then drag it onto the song it still works.
    can anyone confirm that?

Same problem. I thought it might have been a Safari security thing until I tried other browsers with the same problem. Like you said... Dragging from the browser to a staging location like the desktop first and then from the desktop to iTunes work just fine. Odd.
I'm looking around for some new iTunes security option. Minor bug but it's really messing with my workflow.

  • Creating web shortcuts for Chromium to the desktop

Hello, I am having some trouble with chrome. I am running arch obviously with xfce4 as my GUI. I have chrome installed and have my chrome icon on my desktop. If i double click it, it works just as expected. What I am now trying to do, is to create shortcuts for chrome to specific websites. For example I want an icon on my desktop I can click that will send me to youtube through chrome, without actually having to type it into my browser. Essentially it is a shortcut, plane and simple. Chrome has it's own way of creating shortcuts here ->
    http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/an … swer=95710
When I do this method I end up creating a shortcut that when double clicked, causes a "Launch Error, Failed to run". How can I fix the shortcuts? I have messed around and got Geany to open up some background code that can be changed, but I am shooting in the dark with doing that. Thanks

"%U" indicates that chromium may be passed a list of URLs on its command line.

  • Read header information from an e-mail that is an attachment to another e-mail

I've written a macro using VBA code within Outlook 2010 that will extract header information from an e-mail and then save it to a csv file.  The code works well, but unfortunately, the header information I need is within e-mails that are sent to
me as attachments.  Which means that I am opening the attachment and then running the macro to get the header information.  Is there a way for VBA to open the attached e-mail and read its header?
Ideally, I would like to write code that will cycle through all of the e-mails in a folder, open the e-mails that are attachments and save off the header information.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Opening a URL from a button within a Web Template

    Hi All,
I have a requirement to provide report specific help from within a standard web template. Assuming that I had a list of help URLs for each report and an intermediary way to redirect to those URL based upon a unique id such as the reports technical name, is it possible to create a generic button from within a web template that would dynamically create a URL based on the reports technical name? I.e., http://www.example.com/page.html?ZGTRPTNME
To date I have only used the Action "Command via Command Wizard" from within the parameters of the button Web Item. However, I did notice that a Script Function was provided. Has any used this functionality and is it possible to create a URL with the technical name of the report?

    Rekesh,
I had a look at the document you linked however what I need to find out is how I can place the technical name (dynamically) within the web template URL (i.e., this needs to work for multiple projects over many reports that all use the same global web template).
It's actually very easy opening a new window via javascript however finding the varible for the report technical name remains unclear. At present I am looking at command URL's. The only other option is that I use a java script substring command to pull the report technical name from the URL (although this not as clean as using command URL's).
    EDIT: Found this document: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/en/43/ef9a6c13f2025be10000000a1553f7/content.htm
Appears that the command: sapbi_page.GetMainTemplateName(); will give me the technical name of the webtemplate although I'm finding it hard to find the command for getting the technical name of the current report.

  • HT2672 Download PDFs from Safari and Mail

This does not work for me.  When I try to download the linked file, all I get is a irrelevant html web page.  This happens with pdf links in Apple Mail and Safari.  What happened to my pdfs I used to be able to download in Firefox and MS Entourage?

Did a few more things, went in to Font Book and ran a validation of all fonts.  Several (21) were shown to have a "problem" so I removed them from the computer but it didn't resolve my issue.  Additionally, I'm seeing other quirky things happening with Mail.app failing to stay connected to Exchange 2010 server and stopps pulling down email.  I thought maybe it was rules as I ran into this issue on Lion several months ago so I removed all rules (disabling them didn't seem to matter) and have also removed MailTags and MailActOn from Indev.  Still no resolution to the missing icons and this is really a problem for me.  I don't want to have to reinstall Mac but I guess if I have to, I have to.

  • Drag File From Safari Download Window to Other Volume - Moves not Copies File - Bug or Feature ?

    Hi,
Appreciate comment on what I thought was unusual Mac OS behavior.  Running Safari 5.1.5, OS 10.6.8.
Mac OSs in my experience copy a file when it is dragged and dropped to another volume/drive. (Let's leave classic desktop out of this.)
It may be the first time I've ever done it in any version of Safari, but just dragged a file directly from the Safari Downloads panel onto another drive's icon - and it appeared to "move" the file from its original download destination to the other drive and not simply copy it onto the other drive.
Didn't look like a copy and standard Finder delete since I didn't see file in the trash, although it was gone from the finder window for the download folder (Desktop in my prefs), and afterwards Safari Download Window magnifying glass icon "can’t show the file “filename” in the Finder because “filename” has moved since you downloaded it." It's reproducible.
Assuming it's not unique to my configuration, is this a bug or "feature" ?
    Thanks.

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the General tab.
You can deselect: Open "safe" files after downloading.
