Dragon Naturally Speaking with the lid/screen closed

I want to use Dragon Naturally Speaking with the lid/screen closed. Please tell me what settings. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I did few tests which my laptops, they sit on docking stations with their lid closed and the sounds were so weak because due to the location of the internal microphones. You need to use an EXTERNAL microphone, you can set you laptop to stay ON after closing the lid:

  • Running dragon naturally speaking with parallels

I just bought a new mac book running snow leopard and after doing all the appropriate transfers of data from my previous mac I tried to run the dragon medical speaking program that had worked very well on the first mac. The first problem I had was the old mac had both an input and output port for mic and headset. The new mac has only one that can be changed to accept input. When I tried to do this it recognized the input but quality of the voice was totally unusable. Call Mac support and after troubleshooting over the phone they determined that there was a problem with the system. they replaced the computer. Same thing on the new one. If I put the microphone plug into the port almost all the way it sees it but quality is still not usable. I've heard some discussion about needing a amplified mic. I've also heard that USB mics don't work well. Lots of not very good information. Can anyone help?

  • Can the lid be closed and still run the computer with an external display?

I purchased a 19" LCD display to hook to my G3, everything works fine but I cannot find any reference on whether the lid for the laptop can be closed while running the computer. Can anyone help answer this for me? Currently I am looking at my laptop with the lid half-closed, or is that open...Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    PowerBook G3 333MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   The Lombard, 384MB RAM

Make sure the computer is plugged in on the AC power adapter. (this is because the power requirements are higher for an external display.)
    - Close the PowerBook's display. The PowerBook will go to sleep.
    - Connect the external monitor.
    - Turn on the external monitor.
    - Connect an external Apple USB keyboard and mouse.
    - Now the PowerBook will wake from sleep.
Next time when you want your Powerbook to sleep use the "sleep" option from the Blue Apple menu (on the left top).
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • Mac book pro is very very slow/it hangs for even the smallest tasks/even with the lid closed it is still running if it is not completely turned off. Dose any one know what may be wrong ? and how to fix it?

More details about the problem : My computer is a Mid 2012 Mac Book pro 2.9GHz i7 processor with 8GB RAM updated to OS X v10.8.5
    - I ran a compleet scan of my computer for any threats ( I used virus barrier express ) and there was nothing identified
    - When I oppened the Activiti Monitor there are about 20-30 processes which I do not undersatand they are run under the user "root" 2 in perticular ( Kernel_task & fseventsd ) they both take up a lot of threads and kernel_task is constantly using 1.2 GB of "real memory" which is at least 20 times any other process that is running espesially the ones that run under the user "Apple" I do not know if this is causing the problems on my mac but i tryed to forces close it and it dose not even let me click the button, the others close but reopean immideatly. I will attach a screen shot of what i have mentioned here.
    - The problems I am facing are mainly performance :- To state a few examples, my mac dose not seam to be able to handile even the smallest tasks like switching tabs on safari, typing any thing, playing a movie withought stopping inbetween, etc.. ( let me elaborate on why I said its not able to handil these tasks, it is because when I am trying to do any one of the afformentioned tasks inbetween the cursor becomes a rainbow collered spinning disk and I am unable to do anything for about 10 seckonds after which it starts to work again for some time before it happens again. )
    - Another concern of mine is that my mac seems to be on even with the lid closed if I do not shut it down compleetly, if i just close the lid after some time the computer starts warming up, and the fan starts running. the battery is drained at the same rate or slightly less rate than it would have if i was using it normally with the lid opean. ( altough this is happning the screen dose not turn on untill the lid is opean again )
    - I have only 300+ GB full out of my 750GB so i believe these are not issues caused by my mac's memory being full ( BUT THE FIRST TIME I NOTICED THIS WAS HAPPNING WAS WHEN MY MEMORY WAS ABOUT 720GB FULL WHEN THESE ISSUES FIRST AROSE I IMMEADITLY DELEATED 400+GB OF MY USELESS FILES THAT I HAD BEEN HORDING ALL OF WHICH WERE MOVIES ) that about covers it all PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANY ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO.
Ps: I apoligize if I have given too many unrelevant details, not enough usefull information and or if i was just all over the place with my explanations but I am really frustrated and was hoping not to miss anyting. Please let me know if any information at all is required and ill do my best to provide it.

With the lid closed in clamshell mode, the lid covers the fans - won't it overheat?

This is useful but the MBA gets a bit hotter due to intake, but if you have the lid open + external screen it gets even hotter due to more for the GPU (processor) to do.
Only way I’ve manage to run only external screen with the lid open is to trick the MBA that the lid is closed with a magnet positioned on the left.
I’d really like a software solution to this though…

  • Dictation software - Any experience with Dragon Naturally Speaking

I have been researching MaacSpeech Dictate [MSD] and Dragon Naturally Speaking [DNS].
From the reviews of MSD it would appear that this app. needs a great deal of work to make it productively usable. There seem to be many "system level" bugs in MSD. Therefore I am reluctant to get involved with MSD.
DNS seems to be well developed and a very productive app. on PCs.
I have Windows Vista running under Parallels Desktop for Mac v. 4.0 on our new IMac 24 inch 3.06 GHz computer. I would like to run DNS under Vista.
[YES, I know that Nuance states that it cannot be run on a Mac directly -- but what about running DNS on a virtual machine ??
    * Does anyone have any first-hand experience running DNS on VMware or Parallels Desktop on an iMac ???
    Thanks for the help.
    Samuel

    Dale-
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!!!
Thats what I thought would be THE 21st century logical solution for a good working dictation app. Obviously MSD DOES NOT fill the bill !!
Which version of DNS are you using ??
When you say " it works as advertised" I assume you are speaking of DNS !!!
My primary need is for the dictation function - not the other "system" related functionality - the Mac OS X is much better for that stuff !!! I'll stick with the Mac OS X !!!
Therefore, I'll order the Standard version of DNS, which they now have on special sale for < $50.
    Thanks again.

  • Would like to upgrade to Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 from DNS 6 (which would also entail a necessary upgrade from Windows 2000 to 7) but understand after all this expense and trouble, DNS upgrade may not be compatible with Firefox 6?

    Question
Would like to upgrade to Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 from DNS 6 (which would also entail a necessary upgrade from Windows 2000 to 7) but understand after all this expense and trouble, DNS upgrade may not be compatible with Firefox 6?
Main priority is voice activation upgrade. Ideas about how to proceed appreciated!

AFAIK, it's been over three years since a WinXP laptop or desktop PC has been sold; I specifically bought a laptop in June 2008 because it was being clearanced by that retail chain to meet Microsoft's deadline, and got it real cheap. It was tagged for the store manager to purchase, but he let me have it because I exceeded his expectations for the services I performed for his store and thought I deserved it. Anything that wasn't made for Vista-compatibility will be very iffy with Win7, IMO - so that basically rules out anything that was made before like Oct or Nov 2007.
Unless another DNS 11 user happens to see this thread and can verify whether it works in Firefox 6.0 or not, I don't what to recommend except for you doing a web search to see what other DNS / Firefox users have to say about compatibility.

  • Turn on by itself with the lid closed

    I have a Lenovo v100 0763 laptop and I have this problem:
When I close my laptop lid, it goes to standby mode (I don't activate the hibernation mode) but it only lasts for 20-30 minutes when I can hear the (humming) sound of the machine starting again even with the lid closed.
When I open the lid, it shows the login page directly like it has always been on (left standby with the lid on)
I had this problem around a year ago, and then I brought the laptop to a service (along with many other faulties - like the screen) and they fixed them (it was under guarantee back then) but now the problem suddenly came back around a week ago and this applies for both condition when it's plugged onto electricity or when it's under battery power only.
My setting for the power is Lenovo Standard
                                                        Power                      Battery
Close the screen:                       after 25 mins             after 5 mins
Shutdown the harddisk:              after 30 mins            after 5 mins
System standby                          after 25 mins            after 5 mins
Does anybody know why my laptop behaves like this? Because sometimes I left my instant messenger on (It automatically went off when I closed the lid) but it went right online again when the laptop was turned on by itself.
    Thanks in advance
    Eva

Sorry, but I cannot find it the one that you meant.
Is it the boot from network setup? Because there's no such thing as Power Management Setup in the boot menu. It's just bunch of options on from where to boot and since my laptop is turned on from standby by itself, does it have anything to do with booting?

  • KDE - Keep Screen Turned Off When The Lid Is Closed

    Hello all,
I configured KDE to turn off the screen when I close my lid and this part works OK.
Problem is, once I move the mouse while the lid is closed the screen wakes up (it's not hard to tell, light gets out from the sides).
If I configure the lid action to be sleep, the computer sleeps and wakes up with lid close/open with the mouse not getting in the way.
Any idea on how I can configure it to block mouse input while the lid is closed so the screen stays off?
    Thanks, Adam.

    Doug.
You're a genius!!! It worked. It wasn't the keyboard that was not reset properly, it is the escape (hey, it kind of looks like Escape - with a Ellen degeneres slang ) key. It is on the fritz and does not want to sit properly. I removed it temporarily, and, voila, it works again.
Thanks again for the headache solved. Now on to my 3 and 5 year old girls - a totally different problem. Maybe it is their CPU???

  • Using  MBP with with the lid closed

I have done some searching for tips on using the MBP with the lid closed and there is some conflicting information. I'm hoping people who use their Apple laptops in this way can help clarify a few things.
First, as I understand it, the MBP will operate with the lid closed if there is a connected power cord, mouse, keyboard, and external display. I plan to use mine with a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard. (More details from Apple can be found here.)
    These are my questions:
    1) I've heard people issue warnings about laptops overheating when running closed, but it seems Apple endorses using the MBP this way. Is heat really a problem, or are people just spreading misconceptions by predicting an early demise for a laptop used in this way?
    2) Can the MBP be turned on/off when closed, or only put to sleep? I want to keep my MBP on a shelf that makes it inconvenient to open every time I want to shut down or power up. I suspect putting it to sleep will be good enough, but if I can shut down and power up without opening the lid, that would be preferable.
    3) I've read that the MBP can be glitchy when waking from sleep in the closed-lid configuration. According to some people it sometimes won't wake up and requires at restart. Am I fooling myself into thinking sleep can replace shutting down?
    Thanks.

    1) As long as you don't place anything between the keyboard and screen, you should be fine. There have been worries about display damage due to heat rising up from the keyboard, but no substantiated reports of real damage occuring.
    2) You can obviously turn the MBP off while closed by choosing Apple > Shut Down; powering back on requires pressing the power button. Another option would be enabling the Wake on LAN feature in Energy Saver preferences.
    3) AFAIK, the problems are with deep sleep and occur regardless of whether the lid is closed or not. I've not had any problems waking my MBP from sleep, but I always shut it down for the night.

  • After 10.8.2 update i can no longer wake my macbook from standby with keyboard when the lid is closed

I just updated to 10.8.2 and now i can no longer wake my macbook froom standby when the lid is closed, it directly goes back to sleep
    steps to reproduce:
    1. attach secondary monitor and keyboard
    2. close lid
    3. wait 5 seconds for going to standby
    4. press any key on keyboard and type in user-credentials (notice how the 2nd monitor becomes the mainscreen)
    5. wait 5 seconds
    6. standby again
    side note:
i also have sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0" enabled, because i like to not use the integrated screen when its attached to a secondary screen, but since it goes back to standby right after login this is pretty much pointless

Same here, I think changed something in 10.8.2 that wrecked the "Open-MBP Clamshell Mode."  sigh

  • Mozilla keeps blocking the Dragon Naturally Speaking addin

I am running a dictation program entitled Dragon Naturally Speaking version 13. I keep getting an error message when I use Mozilla saying that the add in is being blocked and asking whether I would like to allow the add in. I have repeatedly selected Allow and Remember only to have the error message pop up again.
Any information or assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

hello, can you go to ''menu ≡ > addons > plugins'' & set Dragon Naturally Speaking to always activate?
edit: sorry posted wrong answer initially.

  • Satellite 'Won't Wake' Up With the Lid Closed

This may not be a Toshiba problem per se since it has been reported for other brands as well.
I want to run backups overnight. This requires my backup programs to 'wake' the computer from sleep. This works perfectly well for my desktop. It does not work for my laptop if the lid is down: the laptop does not wake, so backups do not run
    Some details:
    Model L955-S5370, Windows 8, UEFI
Power settings for a closed lid, whether on-battery or off battery, are: Sleep (not hibernate)
Makes no difference whether the power options are to sleep or not to sleep when the lid closes; in neither case does the computer wake up.
When the laptop is set to not sleep when the lid is closed, the laptop eventually goes to sleep in accordance with my general sleep settings ('sleep after 30 minutes')
The same issue has been reported in the user forums for other brands, and in those instances the problem was neither obvious or easy to diagnose. The problem seems to be in the interface between the lid closing mechanism and the operating system. Dell says they'll include a resolution in a BIOS update.
    Can Toshiba help with this?
    Solved!

No, you're not dense. Lacking in appreciation of subtle humor, perhaps.
"Allow wake timers" was disabled. When I changed the setting to "Enabled" my backup ran. So I am   .
That said, I have read in other OEM forums that running scheduled tasks with the lid down can be a problem. Something to with the interface between the lid (hardware) and the operating system. Apparently, I don't have that problem.

  • Can i choose the resolution of my external display for when the lid is closed when my lid is open

When I close the lid of my MacBook Pro for an external display apple chooses a resolution that isn't compatible with my display can I choose the resolution when the lid is open in any way of my external display for the mode when the lid is closed?

Hi there, I had a similar problem and was unable to resolve it.  I spent about an hour on the phone with a very helpful AppleCare rep who was also completely stuck.  It would seem that the only solution is to choose a setting with trial and error while the lid is closed.
My MacBook ended up getting stuck on a closed-lid reoslution that wasn't supported, so I had to do a screen-share with another device to see what the video card was sending to the external display and change it back that way.

  • Is it possible to use Dragon Naturally Speaking on a G5

    Hi,
I have a dual 2 GB Power PC processor G5 with 2.5 Gigs of Ram currently running Panther 10.3.9. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to realistically use Dragon Naturally Speaking on my computer, perhaps using Virtual PC? I have seen a lot of old posts on other sites, but the people commenting were using significantly slower systems. My wife bought the DNS and we have 25 days to decide if we want to return it.
If not, is there a decent software that would do this on this system?
Thanks in advance for any info you might be able to share!
    Michael

    Hi Michael:
You probably could run DNS with virtual PC, but I'm guessing it would be painfully slow, and would not integrate with OS X applications.
There are two other Native OS X applications for this:
    1) IBM Via Voice for OS X, same as the app for PC's, BUT it may be hard to find and it has not been updated for years, and i'm not sure it is supported any more.
    2) Mac Speech's iListen, really the only choice for native OS X. It integrates with virtually any OS X application and is currently available and supported.
    See:
    http://www.macspeech.com/
note: they claim that you should use one of their high quality microphones, but i find it to work OK with a logitech USB headset.
for my money I would return DNS and get iListen.
