Dragonwriter 48X16X48

This is my first CD burner, so maybe I'm just doing something wrong here.  I'm trying to use InCD to use my CD-RW's like a floppy drive.  I can't seem to accomplish this.
For instance, when I create a new Word document and goto Save as... I'm able to save a file to the CD-RW.  But if I close Word, then reopen the document, make changes and try to save them, the CD-RW appears to lockup.  The light starts flashing orange and the drive continuously spins up and the decelerates.  The system becomes unstable until I reboot.
I've tried using InCD, and I've even used Roxio's DirectCD (from the 5.0 platinum EZ CD creator) to see if it was a compatibility issue, which it doesn't appear to be.
I've updated the drive with the lates firmware (which was a story in itself, let me tell you), and that hasn't fixed it either.  I can't seem to figure out what the problem is.  Does anybody have any suggestions?

Can anybody suggest anything at all?  I've tried contacting tech support, but was unable to reach anybody.  I left a message for a callback and received none.  I went to the website and sent in a request for help and have received no response.  I'm VERY unsatisfied.

  • Problem with DragonWriter 48x16x48 CR48-B

I dont know what to do, it is only burning at 16x max!?!  My CD-r's are 32x so I know I cannot use the full 48x max, but I cannot get above 16x.  I am using the bundled Nero 5.5.8.2 and I have also tried using EZCD.  EZCD doesnt even see that I have a cdrw drive installed, and when I upgraded to a newer version of Nero, it didnt see the writer at all either.  I since then went back to the bundled version of Nero to help with troubleshooting.  All dma etc is enabled, and windows see's the drive as "ATAPI CD-RW 48x16".  I am using windows xp pro, with all the latest updates etc an Abit kx7-333 with 512mb ram.  I dont see the system as being part of the problem.  Does this product usually come its drivers on a floppy?  Just curious cause thats what I got with it.  ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Shaun

I too am having trouble getting it to recognize 48X rated cdr media. I have tried 3 or 4 different brands now and even purchased some expensive Verbatim Datalife Plus 1x-48x approved. The best speed I have achieved is 40X. 48X only appeared on the drop down list once with the disc that came with the unit but I suspect that it burned at 40X as the time I recorded was the same as for several runs at 40X using 40X media.
I have updated the firmware to 140D (the latest) and the aspi layer to 4.71 and Nero to the latest (5.5.9.17)
Running XP on an Athlon XP2000+ and 512MB of DDR2700 ram.
I searched around in Nero and couldn't find any way of turning off the cdr sensing with the hope that I could at least choose manually to burn at 48X.
Even Nero CD Speed tool shows the unit starting at 19X then going to 24x, then it steps up to 32x for awhile then tops out at 40x for the rest of the test.
Has anyone with this drive burned at 48x successfully? What was the time in mins:secs and size. I would appreciate some comparison info to see what I should be expecting.  My best time was 2:52 for 695MB (79Mins) which equates to a 40X burn.

  • Help me overclock.

Okay, I tried overclocking using fuzzy logic 4 or whatever it is and all it does is locks up. So I tried doin' my own thing on the bios. The most I can get to is 2.5 Ghz and I have a 2.4 Ghz P4. I have a Volcano 7+ HSF on the CPU and the passive cooler on the northbridge. This thing barely overclocks even with my cpu fan goin' at 6500 RPMs and I don't even know whats goin' on. Here are my specs:
    Intel Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz Socket 478 533 FSB
    Thermaltake Volcano 7 plus HSF
    PNY Geforce4 Ti 4600 128 Meg
    MSI 648L-MAX Mainboard
512 Megs Winbond PC3200 DDR 400 MHZ Memory CAS 2.5
WESTERN DIGITAL 80 GB 7200 RPM HD
    MSI Dragonwriter 48x16x48 CDRW
    2x 1.44 Meg Floppy drive
Enermax Aluminum Mod Case w/blue Sunbeam Cathodes
    PowMAX LP-6100e 500W Power Supply
    Detonator 41.03
    Windows XP Pro

Wow, from all the replies I am getting, I guess this card is an excellent overclocker.....

  • CR48-A, 48x16x48 burner Problems.

I have just purchased the 48x16x48 speed burner from MSI.
I am running an HP Pavillion 566Mhz.
I have installed the burner correctly, as I have done a half dozen others, but I have encountered a problem that I have never had before.
When I boot up after installing and check My Computer, it shows the CD-R as a "Removable 'E' Drive".   When in this state, any music or game CD will not work and Windows will ask me if I want to format it!     hehe
If I then turn off the computer and restart, it then shows up correctly in My Computer, and will successfuly burn.
Any ideas on why this happens and what I can do about it?
    Thanks!

Upgrading your firmware is just like flashing your BIOS, as long as you use MSI's firmware from here you shouldn't have and problems.

  • 40x16x48 dragonwriter

why does my burner only rip mp3's at around 7x?  is it a hardware or software problem? I am using realone with superpass to rip at 192kbps, but it only rips at 7x.  even when i disable error correction and whatnot it still goes slow.  i know people with the 48x16x48 and it rips at 40x.
    please help

This sounds dumb but did you try to move it physiscally to anothere bay?
Also try another ide channel and Master, Slave set up.
There is a firmware update for it too.
    Good luck!

I've now got an MSI MS 8348 CDRW 48x16x48 and find that my PII 233 with 192 Mb Ram running Win98 is too slow for it. Is there any way I can slow it down? I've tried the lowest setting, but I can't use a CD-RW disk. Help ;(

what do you mean by  you can't use a CD-RW disc? are you having trouble writing/reading to it?  What software are you using?

  • 40x12x48 Dragonwriter problem

Sorry for cross posting, but seems to me that this message aint noticed if I don´t start new thread.
Hello, I have also problems with my cd-writer. First it burned nicely 16x cd-roms and I didnt care about it because those cd-r´s where only supported to 16x. Now I got better roms and those are supported to 32x. If I try to burn them with Nero 5.5.9.14 I can´t do it at all. Every single burn has failed. I installed the bundle version that i got with the drive (5.5.7.1) and I can burn cd´s with 8-16x. I have read these boards now many hours and noticed that firmware update is what I need. Well I went to dl page and took the correct firmware and installed it. I rebooted my pc and tried to burn cd. Surprise, surprise it failed again.
OK the last thing I did, I set my cd-drive to pio (actually xp changed it automatically). I opened nero took autopilot off, set my cd-rom in (24xTDK) change writing speed to 16x. (after setting autopilot off i can see all speeds  8o ) Track at once, no multisession, close cd, -> burn the data-cd. Everything seemed to go great. I opened the cd, data is there is there and it seems that i can use the cd. BUT when i try open/copy the files it stucks. Then I started to investigate the cd I just made. It isnt finished. To me it seems that THIS DRIVE JUST CAN´T CLOSE CD´s.
    What to do?
    My hardware
    KT3 Ultra-ARU MS-6380E
    amd athlon 1200
    256ddr
    40gt samsung Ide master
    40x12x48 Dragonwriter 2nd ide
    geforce1 ddr
    winxp pro
    nero 5.5.9.14 or 5.5.7.1
I just wonder that what I´ve done wrong because others seems to get help from firmware update. I really appreciate answers. And the burn fails, it doesn´t matter if I try to backup cd or just burn simple data.

which is ex-acer :-) Well I took the drive back to reseller i get new one on next week. I told to reseller that he has to test it before it comes back to me.
My friend tested the drive on his pc before i took it back. He installed original firmware, the new firmware and it didnt work. Well let´s see what kind of player i get this time.

  • Problems with MSI 8348 Dragonwriter

    Hi!
I just got my Dragonwriter a few weeks ago. Everything worked out fine, for some time...
For the last 2 weeks now, I´ve heavy problems with it:
If I want to burn a CD (using Nero) he gets up to 6% (@ ~700MB to be burned), wich is nearly the lead-in, then stops burning and giving out the error: "No Seek Complete"
I checked the internet for solutions, and found out, that some people just changed the brand of CD-Rs, then the problem was gone. I did this too, trying 5 brands of silver+silver CD-Rs, 1 brand of silver+black and 1 brand of silver+gold CD-Rs. Just the last one, silver+gold, worked out perfectly.
Could it really be, that the Dragonwriter just takes silver+gold CD-Rs??? Could anyone please help me out?!?
P.S.: Sorry for mistakes, I´m from germany, so... if you find one, keep him   )

Make sure that the memory timings are not set to 4-4-4-x but that they are set to the defaults values (5-5-5-x).  Also ensure, that the memory clock speed is not set to anything higher than 400 MHz (=DDR2-800).  The voltage at these settings should not need to exceed 1.95V.  So please lower it accordingly.  In case the freezes still occure, please run memtest86+ to check your memory for errors.

Please get rid of that tool for all further tests.  Uninstall it completely from your system as it is known to cause crashes and freezes on its own terms when running.

  • Problem with Dragonwriter MS-8348

    Please help me!
I have a big Problem with my burner  (MS-8348 Dragon writer 48x16x48 Firmware 140D [already upgraded], win 2k ).
he always stops at about 14% with the message "no seek complete".  It seems that the burner is reading the cd but can't do so. He gets louder than he stops and gets louder and so on. After that or when i cancel the session he writes the error message.
I've already tried all possible solutions that i can mention (e.g. other CD-Rs http://www.nero.com/en/content/helptool/358.htm, and other ones)
    Please help me!

Thx for the help, but it didn't work. I Tried both Firmware update and lower speed, but nothing helps.
If you have other ideas please let me know.

  • Dragonwriter MS-8348

ok,, I just got a cdrw drive ms-8348 £45, installed it ok and used a cdr with neroburn which went ok,, went back to the shop and got some Traxdata 4x cdrw cd's went to format them keep getting errors with Incd ( 0051-0003-0002-0000 ) took the my pc to the shop after 6 hours got a phone call saying the pc is ready to pick up, got home formated a new cd but still come up with the same error,, now the person in shop gave me the cdrw disk that he had formated on my machine Traxdata 10x cdrw cd and this works ok, so my Question is what speed cds should i use with this drive.

I have an MS-8348A drive and the only CD-RW disk I've used is the one that came with the drive. I have never had a problem with it. I had an MS-8348B drive and it only gave me problems. One day it totally stopped working and was making grinding sounds. I sent it in for an RMA and I got an MS-8348A back. I guess that MS-8348B's were problem drives. It was a rebagged BENQ 4816P. The MS-8348A drive is actually an optorite CW4802. If you have an MS-8348B drive, you can try firmware from here and if you have and MS-8348A drive, you can get firmware from here These releases are newer than the ones from MSI and will hopefully solve any of your problems.

Also Device cManager tells me that it is working properly. I can't find any drivers on the MSI website as my model isn't listed at all, so I can't even uninstall and reinstall.
I have heard that uninstalling XP SP2 might work but this seems a bit drastic! HAs anyone actually tried this?

Yeah I did, and it told me there was stuff that would no longer work, but I went for broke anyways, but then I did have all the required drivers, have you taken a google round other places other than MSI?

If you dont want to use the new AMD CPU 333 FSB you dont need to flash the BIOS - I have Flashed to 5.6 again but, if you want to use a 333 FSB CPU you can flash the BIOS to version 5.7 and if have sound problems use the PCI latency patch for VIA chipsets.
VIA chipset MotherBoard owners who have through all of the above and still have sound problems with their Soundblaster cards, might want to look into the PCI latency patch for VIA chipsets - get it here:

There's also a similar page about resolving sound problems on Via chipset based computers here:

Since my chip is an unlocked, I cannot easily run it at the default, but I can underclock it. At 100x6.0=600mhz, USB does not work, as well as 100x12.5. Same with 133x6.0 and 133x12.5. It appears to make no difference underclocking or overclocking.
I downloaded the right BIOS listed on MSI's KT3 Ultra-ARU page. I don't think the BIOSes are different anyway, since the same files, changelog, and etc are also listed for the Ultra-2 board.
A thing to note, that this is the onboard VIA-controller USB ports doing this. My Ultra-ARU's NEC-controller USB 2.0 ports work fine in both Win2k and Linux if I hook my mouse and keyboard up in those. This is not an ideal solution for me though.

When booting up the memory test only shows 98 m memory and 32+ shared memory. After it boots up, and I am in Windows 98se, it only shows 96 m memory and the system is at 70%.
Have I done something wrong, or is there something else wrong? The machine doesn't seem to run as fast as I would expect it to, but then the HD is a slower model. And I can't get the cd rw to work, but that is a different problem i posted to another forum.
    Thanks!

No, it doesn't appear that you have done anything wrong.  You do have 128mb (96+32=128). The reason for the bios showing 98mb and windows showing 96 is in how it counts megabytes.  Windows see's megabytes as 1 000kb.  Your bios see's mb's as 2^10=1024kb.  This accounts for the discrepancy you see when you boot up and your 128mb stick is seen as 131mb.
As for system resources, you only have 96 mb RAM available for Windows.  Add up what you have running in the background as well as what Windows normally needs and you're about right.

I am thinking of buying a TDK CD-RW drive instead of just a CD-ROM drive. I am looking at the VeloCD 48x16x48. I heard alot of good things about TDK. the price on it is $109.99 and i have seen other drives that are slower and more expensive. Is this a good drive to go with.  My other choice is the Plextor Plex combo that is a CDRW/DVD drive. it sppeds are 20x10x40. I write speed/rewrite speed/ read speed. I want a DVD player but am not sure if it is worth it to get in the same package if the speeds are going to suffer. any info onthat would be appreciated. One last thing, if I record from my 4x speed CD-ROM to the new CD-RW is it possible and will it be slower than if I also upgraded my CD-ROM  or can I record from the CD-RW to the hard drive and back to a CD-R? will the quality be better or worse?
