Drastic Download/Upload Speed Drop

Hi guys, I could do with some help!
For the last week or so my broadband connection has been very slow- it dropped from around 8Mbps to 2Mbps, and it's stayed there consistently since. I've tried resetting the hub, to no avail. Also for the last couple of days getting dropped perhaps once or twice a day. Hub settings below:
It could (should be?) a coincidence, but I've just built a new system and was trying to re-download my steam library when my problems began. My first assumption was that some kind of sneaky throttling was going on, but I'm on an Unlimited package, and the download rate is the same across several programs and browsers.
Edited to provide further information: My new system is running Windows 8.1, the slow download speed is consistent across several devices (Windows 8.1 PC, Windows 7 PC, Windows Phone), and the BT Speed Test shows 8.13Mbps from the Exchange to my house, but only 1.9Mbps from the router to my PC, so I'm guessing the problem is in the router somewhere.
Cheers.
P.S. The low connection time here is due to a manual reset.

Many thanks for the quick reply- I've tried the wholesale performance test several times (gives the same sort of connection speed), but the Diagnostic Test won't run (tried wired on two different systems). Instead, it gives the following message:
The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.

  • Basic Questions on ActionTec MI424-WR Router - problems with poor download/upload speed

First, I will get to the point and ask my questions, then will explain what's happening - I'm interested in hearing whether the right actions are being taken to solve my problem.
    1) After perusing the forums, I see frequent reference to the "Rev" version of the ActionTec MI424-WR Router.  How do you find the Rev version?  I have logged into the Router and in the "System Monitoring" icon, the Router Status lists my Hardware version as 'A'.  Does this mean I have Rev 'A'?
    2) What is Verizon handing out these days for Routers?  Mine is being replaced, and I am wondering what to expect.  I have Verizon FIOS Phone, TV, and Internet service, and have the 25/25 Internet service.  Will they give me another MI424-WR?  If so, what Rev level are they likely to give me?
Here's why my router is being replaced - opinions/comments/advice welcomed.
For the past year or two, I've consistently measured (via speedtest.speakeasy.net) about 30Mbs download, and around 22-25 Upload.  Lately, I noticed that my downloads were quite slow, so I tested my speed at the above website, which I had not done in many months.  I measured only about 2-3 Download and 1-2 up.  Note all of what I am discussing hear takes place with hard-wired ethernet, NOT wireless.
I tried testing from multiple computers, running XP, Vista, and Windows 7.  All getting consistently similar poor speeds.  I verified my account still is supposed to have 25/25/ service, which I verified online.
Tried rebooting the router, no change.  Then tried hard reset (pushing in the recessed button, holding it for about 20-30 seconds.  After it reconnected to the Internet, I tested speed again.  No change.
Interestingly, I tested wireless speed on the laptop I have.  Speed is MUCH better, around 15 down, and 10-12 up.
I tried the speed optimization tool on two of my PCs, it made no improvement.  Finally, got into an online chat with a Verizon Tech.  He did some tests on the line, we repeated some of the things I already tried, and then he asked how old my Router was...I am pretty sure it is the original one I received when I first signed up for FIOS, around 5-6 years ago, which is one of the reasons I asked how to tell which rev level I had.   So the tech concluded the problem was probably my Router.
I TEND to agree, especially because I recently had an "anomaly" on my network.  My son complained one day that Internet was down.  When I got home, I found out my NetGear Gigbit switch was dead, and two of my hard-wired ethernet network printers could no longer talk to the network.  I replaced the switch, so now I am thinking perhaps the Router was damaged somehow.  I have no idea what the cause of this anomaly was - everything that connects to my network was plugged into Triplite ISOBAR surge protectors, but that only protects AC power.
I would think a hardware failure would completely kill the ethernet portion of the router, not simply reduce speed, but I could be wrong.  Anyone been through something similar to this before?  I expect to receive the new Router next Thursday, so hopefully I should know by then, but still - what should the next steps be if the new router does not fix the problem?
Thanks for any comments, insight or shared experiences you might be willing to share...

    This is embarrassing.
Smith6612, you are absolutely correct, and you nailed it!
When all this mess started, I checked my Verizon account to make sure I was signed up for 25/25 Internet.  I was.
I don't know what has happened, but after reading Smith6612's response, I went back to recheck my account.  I was set up for 15/5!  So, the speedtest measurements I have been getting the last couple of days are exactly what I should be getting.  Two possibilities:
    1) My Triple-Play bundle must have expired in the past two weeks by coincidence.
    2) The Verizon tech may have changed my account profile when I worked with them online last week, although this was never discussed.
At any rate, Smith6612 wins the prize.  It certainly explains the download/upload speeds I am getting.  I have logged into Verizon and signed up for a new bundle.  According to their website, my new profile should take effect Tuesday 1/10, so after that point, I should be measuring 25/25 again.
Thanks to all who responded to this thread.  I will update this thread to confirm after Tuesday.  I get nervous whenever I have to change anything with Verizon - although everything has worked fine for the past few years, we have so many services with them - Cell Phone, TV, Internet, and Home Phone, that I worry something will go wrong with the billing, but we'll see.

  • Why is the download/upload speed so slow on my MBA (about 5 times slower than my PC)?

Why is the download/upload speed so slow on my MBA (about 5 times slower than my PC)?

Are you on band 13 or band 4?  13 is the original LTE band and remains relatively congested. Band 4 is the XLTE band and is less congested and has higher overall potential bandwidth (15 MHz vs 10 MHz). Even so, 7 Mbps is more than enough for doing stuff on your phone and is not considered slow.
    To check band,
    dial *3001#12345#*
    select serving cell info
frequency band will say 13 or 4
FInd an area with band 4 and retest.

For the past two weeks I noticed that my download and upload speed has been divided by two, I use to enjoy 1.4 meg and it is now down to 0.6megs  it is not a connection issue because it is stable, it looks more like a throttle has been applied to my package. I called support yesterday and they said they would "reset" my line as my connection appears to be slow from their system, nothing seem to have changed yet. My IP profile has also been divided by two and is now 7.5 megs instead of about 16 megs, I am a bit puzzled. See my ADSL stats below

  • Strange download/upload speeds using the airport express as a repeater

    HI,
i am having strange speed issues.   Let me start off by stating my AirPort Extreme is on the middle floor of a 3 story condo.   The condo has 2ft concrete slabs between floors.   I have a repeater for the first floor as my signal strength was poor.  I get great speeds on the same floor as the AirPort Extreme 45/15.   On the 1st floor with the airport express, I get 4 down/12 up.  My upload speed is always faster by a wide margin.  On the 3rd floor (no repeater) I get similar results.   I don't understand how my upload speeds are preserved, yet my download speeds via the repeater or 3rd are awful.
HElp!   I'm using 2.4gHz for better penetration and I have changed the channels to help with congestion.  Any ideas ?

Having the upload speed not change is odd indeed, but the loss of download speeds can almost invariably be attributed to the concrete walls in your condo. These do a poor job of allowing Wi-Fi signals to pass through them. Your actual Internet speeds are not affected by them, but the overall bandwidth speeds between the Internet server and your computer will be.
The best solution, albeit maybe not practical, would be to interconnect each of these base stations with an Ethernet connection and reconfigure the entire network for roaming.

  • Solution to low download/upload speed on Linksys E900

I lost almost 2 days and nights searching to solve this problem. I pay for a 50 Mbps connection using PPPoE. When i put the cable directly into the computer, i could reach speeds of 7.5 - 8.5 MBps download within the network. However, when plugged in the router, on LAN from router i would barely get 4.7 MBps and on wi-fi about 4. Not to moention that on www.speedtest.net i would have less then 30 Mbps upload speed, and when i put the cable directly into computer, i would get speeds aroung 70Mbps. The problem is not that this router cant handle PPPoE or such thing (explanation read on somewhere on this forum) or that the router cant handle those speeds or some another stupid (defending Linksys) explanation. The problem lies within the firmware of this router. I also tried the LiveSupport but to no avail, reflashing with the same version of flash, getting the same speeds. Lost one hour there. The solution is to upgrade to Tomato custom firmware from Shibby. Get the E900 version from here http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26RT-N/build5x-115-EN/Linksys%20E-series/, and flash it from Administration>>Upgrade Firmware. Before and after the flash, do the so called 30-30-30 reset (just check for it on youtube). I configured the wireless on 40Mhz Channel Width and Short Preamble. And that's it. Now i get 7.5 - 8.5 MBps speeds from LAN router, and on wi fi i got speeds up to 7MB. Thats aproximately 40% gains in terms of speeds, so it definitely worths it. Plus you get some pretty options, especially on QoS. Linksys should spend more time offering a better support for firmware, rather then selling devices that the user cant take full advantage of their hardware properties. I hope this post helps everybody who got this problem

Up higher in that post is some speed test results regarding a wireless N comparison between the TP-Link and EA3500. At those speeds I don't think the internet connection is the bottle neck. How do those wireless speed compare to your router Tomato speeds?
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Changed radio mode to 5 ghz using AirPort Utility, but download/upload speeds are unchanged.

I'm using both a Macbook that is 5 ghz compatible as well as an Airport Extreme that is able to transmit 5 ghz. When I switched my radio mode from 2.4 ghz to 5 ghz and ran speed tests, the download speed was at 2.7 mbps each time...in other words, switching to 5 ghz made no increase in my download/upload on the speedtest. Is there a reason for this?
Does the speed of my internet have an effect on how fast my wireless can transmit?
    Thanks!

People have been talking about how their internet speeds have increased dramatically with the use of the 5GHz option.
Unfortunately, they don't have the correct facts that they need. As John says, your Internet connection speed is limited by your ISP.  Even the slower 2.4 GHz "g" speed on your router is likely much faster than your Internet connection will allow, so having even higher speed capability with 5 GHz on your network buys you nothing as far as the Internet connection speed is concerned.
Simply stated, a router cannot "speed up" the Internet connection. That is controlled by your ISP. If you need faster Internet connection speeds, you need to check with your ISP about a faster....and more expensive....plan.
Where 5 GHz can help is on a local network between devices. Say, you want to copy a file from one computer to another, or from a computer to a hard drive over the wireless. In this case, 5 GHz will allow the data to transfer at a higher, faster rate than a 2.4 GHz connection.
The result is that it will take less time for the file transfer to occur using 5 GHz on your local network.

  • Heavy downloading = big speed drop?

For the last 3 days I have been downloading alot of data (around 500gb) and today noticed I'm not able to get my usual speed which is 5mb/s+. I had some issues with my homehub last week but this seems to have stopped now and I rebooted it almost every day but now i dont understand how suddenly today I've gone from 48meg IP profile to 43? has this happend to anyone else for downloading large files or would it be down to the homehub rebooting last week? I have alot lost 10meg from my upload now get 6meg

  • Upload speed dropped from 0.97 to 0.36

This has only started since I noticed yesterday. My download is 15.65. Ping 33ms. It always hovered around 0.97 (Max 1Mbps) but I tried doing certain things yesterday and then speedchecked (with speedtest.net and BTW) and not pushing above 0.37. I've checked all devices and turned off, made sure no background programs. My upload hasn't been capped at 448kbps has it or is there something generally wrong at the exchange/line?

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results .
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Very Slow Download/Upload Speed

I have the Turbo service (5MBps - 7.1MBps). I check speedtest and 192.168.1.1 and they tell me : Speed (Down/Up):  5883 Kbits/sec by 863 Kbits/sec, which is fine with me. The problem is though, my download speeds are never above 600 Kbits/sec. I plugged my phone line directly into my Verizon box outside and get the same speed. What could be the problem?
    Some Info :
I tested this on three computures (Two with Windows 7 and one with Vista). I am also using a Westell 6100 modem.

    a) Go to Start -> Run.

    c) In the new window, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.
This is, as noted at http://oit.ncsu.edu/resnet/ipconfig

The other issue is my upload speed is poor only get approx 0.3mb when I was with O2 before I changed to bt in the summer I was getting 1mb upload any ideas how to improve this

I have been with BT for as long as I can remember and never had any issues or problems with the connection.  As of 7th October my Upload speed dropped to less than half a Meg and has remained this low to this very day. My download speed is fine at about 38 Meg.  But I play alot of games and need the higher upload speed, I have spent countless phones calls to supposedly BT technians and Level 2 technicians and they all can not provide me with a solution, they silpy say thats not their problem.  I know there is nothing wrong at my end as i Have friends bring their laptops round etc and they experience the same low un-usable speeds.  I am now payign for something i cant use and so far have had no credible help, I am hoping someone on here can help as I really dotn know where to go from here.  I have read trhough otehr simliar posts and seems a 'line reset' has helped some people, when I have asked for this I have been told that does not exist on fibre optic, not sur ehow true this is ?? ANy more information needed pelase just ask, and i will provide I just want my connection back to how it was.
    Thanks

From what you're describing connection-wise you have Infinity .... The DLM on Infinity is bi-directional as is ADSL2 ... and if you are suffering depleted upload speed something has happened on the upload path to clamp the MSAN down.
Don't do anything until daylight hours tomorrow, then power down both the vdsl modem and hub, doesn't matter too much in which order. Leave them both powered down for maybe 30 minutes.
During that period, unplug carefully your cables and check them out, look for anything that is causing a poor connection.
Also ... before you power back up, look at where your hub and modem are located, they don't want to be adjacent to any power supplies, transformers, monitors, magnetic coil speakers, radiators or anything that can induce impulse noise, and that includes phones and base-stations. Segregate power leads away from network cables.
When you think you're in the clear, plug everything back in but in the powered down state ... when you have connected everything up, first power up the vdsl modem, and wait for it to initialise, once it comes up and stays up, then power up the hub and check out the connection.
If nothing has changed, give it a few hours and check again, if nothing has happened after a full 72 hours the MSAN will need a reset on your connection via the moderators on this forum.
    See how you go.
The reason the BT response is that they can't help, is because they supply a service to you as far as the NTE, and basically what happens after that is your responsibility. (impulse noise in your home etc.)

I’m in Queens N.Y. area, The way I see it Verizon Fios has OVER PROVISIONED, OVER SOLD their own network and switches are overloaded with bandwidth that can't handle. So they throttle down everyone’s speed, on the local Central office hub. As the hour of the day 7PM the speed is being gradually being slowed down to about 7Mbps for me.
As the hour approaches I have been running tests between a few servers transferring large files for a few hours, my results were: as the hour approaches the speed gradually decreases until it’s caped at 7Mbps. but the upload speeds are unaffected. It’s like Fios provisioned download speed is exhausted. PC directly connected with a CAT6 1Gigabit LAN cable to ONT. So the bottle neck is the central office

I see it as the fiber has to allocate bandwidth for the TV, INTERNET and not to mention if you watching VIDEO ON DEMAND all use bandwidth.
