Draw Grid in Illustrator

hi guys,
1 - Do you know which is the best way to draw a grid like that in Illustrator?
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1ub1FOws8ZpNjfaWuKSTIOpkSeMN7V
Sometimes i did drew something like it and when i apply the outline view, the node points are not in the same line. I guess i might have to make an isometric grid...
2 - The idea is to use this grid later on as a pattern to fill shapes like rectangles or circles. Which is the best way to do it?
thanks for any ideas,
Sebastiao

Jet, that is a marvelous drawing!
So if i understand right you draw the red or the yellow lines and then how you convert it to a pattern? Is that symbol palette?
Thanks for the good info and regards!

  • Entering text within sections of a Polar Grid within illustrator.

    I have created a polar grid in illustrator with many sections. I want to be able to enter text in every section of the grid and not just along the path lines. How do i create text frames so each grid section within the polar grid is separate and therefore allows me to click on it and enter text. I would also like to change the colour of all the polar grid sections individually. I think it might have something to do with threaded text but not sure. Once i have created frames for each section I assume this will allow me to do this. Please can someone explain how i can resolve this problem. Thank you in advance.

    You may (Smart Guides are your friends):
    1) Create the Polar grid with twice as many Radial Dividers as you wish to end with; the surplus ones are for Path Type;
    You may Ungroup and work with the Selection Tool for selection, or work with the Direct Selection Tool for selection in the following;
    2) If you only wish to have text in some of the segments round the grid delete the rest, the unwanted dividers;
    Either:
    3) Select the Concentric Divider outside the segments to have text (if you Direct Select it, click it in the layers palette to select the whole path, then Object>Path>Divide Objects Below; repeat for the Concentric Divider inside the segments to have text;
    Or:
    3) Cut each of the surplus dividers with the Scissors Tool at the bordering Concentric Dividers (Smart Guides say intersect when you are there);
    4) Delete the unwanted parts of the surplus Radial Dividers that are outside the segments to have text (with the Direct Selection Tool you have to delete twice to get rid of the end points);
    5) Select all the paths for the Path Type and Object>Path>Add Anchor Points;
    6) Select each of the paths from 5 where the Type is to go outside in and rotate by 180 degrees (Object>Transform>Rotate);
    7) Set Paragraph>Align Center, then select the first path, then click the midpoint with the Path Type Tool and type the first bit, then use the Character>Baseline Shift to get it centred over the baseline;
    8) Type the other bits in the same way (the baseline shift will work for them as well).

  • Drawing in adobe illustrator

    Hi okay I just started school and Im learning to use adobe illustrator. In the begining we where told we did not need to know how to draw, but as we go along I noticed that in order to create all the "cool" looking things that you see other people make you actually have to(at least if you dont want to get into legal trouble).......So basically my question is, how can I get around this or is there any suggestions that could help me out I would really appreciate it. THANKS

    In the begining we where told we did not need to know how to draw
    Generally speaking, the primary purpose of Illustrator and programs like it (FreeHand, Corel Draw, Corel Designer, Deneba Canvas, Xara Designer Pro, etc., etc.) is vector-based illustration. That's why they are collectively called "drawing programs."
    Taking a quote like this out of context may misrepresent it. Your instructor may have been making the point that Illustrator (and similar programs) are often used by non-illustrators for a variety of more "utilitarian" purposes. (File format conversions, modifications of existing vector artwork, etc.). Or, he may have been simply saying that you don't have to be a skilled illustrator to make use of the program for simple graphics, diagrams, etc.
    Or, the point may have been that programs like Illustrator are probably more frequently used for the same purposes as page-layout programs. That is, for whole-document assembly. I dare say that if you could take a truthful survey of freelance Illustrator users, you'd find that the majority of paying projects they do in a year are not purely illustration. Much, if not most, of their bread & butter proejcts are low page-count whole documents like the ubiquitous fliers, brochures, placement ads, display posters, etc. It is easy to demonstrate that such projects make more sense in what passes for mainstream "illustration" programs today than in conventional-wisdom "page layout" programs. If one wants to argue with this, then rephrase the question: How many of your whole-document design projects are lengthy bookish type documents with repetitive layouts, long stories of threaded text, etc.?
    All the above is true. Moreover, though, if it had been me making that statement in a classroom lecture, it would have been part of an explanation that programs like Illustrator are really more properly called "design" programs than illustration programs. This is a point I have been making for decades. WIth very few feature exceptions, the interface of programs like Illustrator almost entirely reference everything to the dumb vertical and horizontal edges of the page. That is not how an illustrator really thinks. In other words, Illustrator is really more like a pre-computer "paste-up board" (a glorified drawing board equipped with just a lame T-square) than an illustration board (a more sophisticated drawing table equipped with a mechanical track machine with rotateable scales). The latter lets you think and work like an illustrator: in terms of the axes of the subject being drawn. The former forces you to reference everything to horizontal and vertical. So even when using Illustrator for illustration, the user is constantly (whether he realizes it or not) fighting against the tyrannical vertical/horizontal orientation of almost every feature in the program.
    The few feature exceptions to this are SmartGuides (called Dynamic Guides or something similar in other programs), Perspective Grid (the first ambititious truly "breakaway" feature toward actual illustration as opposed to design; a FreeHand 9 innovation which Illustrator pretty much copied), and a few details in modal dialogs which allow you to define Lines and movements in terms of angle and distance. All of this together, though, is piecemeal and half-baked compared to something really built for efficient illustration.
    That is one large reason why mainstream vector drawing programs seems so unintuitive to newcomers, even when said newcomer is already an accomplished illustrator or artist. It could be a world-changing thing if the minds of young aspiring illustrators could be inspired with a little healthy skepticism and dare to imagine what a truly illustration-centric vector drawing program might be like. It might re-invigorate this lethargic software category.

  • Drawing "wires" in Illustrator CS4?

    I have tried using Photoshop to tidy-up a scanned wiring diagram saved as a TIFF. The diagram consists of many (almost) vertical and horizontal lines (the wires) which I want to straighten and color. Some wires are two colors, so the lines need to be banded or striped in some way.
    I have never used Illustrator, but in this thread it emerged that it was the better tool for the job (there are sample images there).
    Any suggestions on how best to accomplish my task?

    Look at the online help for the basics of:
    Drawing paths and assigning strokes to them.
    Appearance Palette's Add Stroke and Add Fill commands. Understand that youi can apply more than one stroke and/or fill to a single path.
    Pattern Brushes.
    Graphic Styles.
    For wiring diagrams, use the ability to apply multiple strokes to a single path. Each stroke can have its own weight. For the diagonal stripes, use a PatternBrush, and make the PatternBrush one of the multiple strokes applied to a path. Store such combinations as Graphic Styles so they can be applied to other paths with one click.
    The sample below shows a set of Pattern Brushes I use for wiring in isometric illustrations, but the principle is the same. The Brushes would work fine for flat schematics.  Wires like 2 and 5 would not require using Brushes; they could be done by simply applying two strokes to a path in the Appearnace palette. (They are Brushes in my sample, in order to include the terminal ends.)
    Wire 4 is an example of using a Brush to create a stripe. The wire has two strokes, with a different Brush applied to each. The top stroke has the stripe Brush applied; the bottom stroke has the simple shaded Brush (with trimmed insulation ends) applied. Again, the bottom Brush would not be necessary if it were not for my intent to include the trimmed ends. In a schematic, that wire could be done with a set of three strokes: A thick stroke at the bottom to create the outer edge color; a middle stroke somewhat narrower to create the middle color; and a top stroke with the spiral stripe Brush applied.
    ...it emerged that it was the better tool for the job...
    Yes. Please don't use Photoshop for wiring diagrams. Such diagrams need to be resolution-independent vector artwork. Think of your downstream users. Wiring schematics often become large and complex, requiring large sheets with relatively small text. A nice PDF containing vector artwork can be zoomed indefinitely to trace a circuit with legible text; and the file size is usually much smaller than if it were a large raster image. (Tech illustrators hate it when technical drawings like schematics default to a dumbed-down raster format. Just makes it a royal pain to work with and modify.)

  • Draw line in illustrator cs2

    hi,
    i am new to adobe illustrator cs2.
    is there any other method to draw line other than s
    setEntirePath().
    thanks in advance,

    Hello David,
    It sounds to me like you're witnessing the double edged sword of an incredibly sharp display. The contrast and clarity of LCD displays makes it very easy to see razor-thin lines with ultra fine definition, but this comes at a cost.
    Font smoothing (a.k.a. font aliasing) is one example of where most LCDs are so sharp that most people prefer to have their text "fuzzed" up a little bit.
    A one pixel wide diagonal line is another example that you've discovered - the display is so sharp that there is no blurring around the "steps" of the line. You can see every change in gradient, because as sharp as your CRT might've been, it was blurring the line just slightly - enough to enhance the illusion that your diagonal line was a line rather than a series of adjacent "steps". No software package that I know of has bothered to implement "line smoothing" yet, probably because you need the detail for accuracy when putting lines together.
    Sort of related to this, big screen HDTV plasma and LCD monitors look amazing in the store when tuned to an HD station, but most people would be floored if they say how grainy and pixelated a standard cable signal looks on the same display. It's literally like watching an old VHS tape, because the display is so sharp it resolves detail that is invisible on a "lesser" display.
    Neat human trick: get used to working with your LCD, and then go back to the CRT if you have a chance. How does the CRT look? I thought I needed glasses the first time I switched back!

  • Open illustrator draw project in illustrator

    Hi,
    How can i open a project i made in Illustrator draw yesterday evening. I would like to open it in Adobe Illustrator now. I saved it into creative cloud, but it seems you cannot access it in the libraries panel of Adobe Illustrator. Can you only access it when you choose the option "send to illustrator" in the mobile app and if you forget to send it you cannot access it? I find it in the creative cloud website but you cna only export it as jpg or png.
    Thank you for your help.
    Best regards,
    Tommy

    Hello again thread!
    For anyone who might be interested / having this same issue - I just got off the phone with Adobe technical support and we spent a good half hour or so going through things - including a join.me session where the tech took control of my computer. Things he was looking for:
    1. Versions of the program up to date - check
    2. Reset my Adobe ID / log out and then back in to CC on computer and iPad - check
    2. On the same network - check (why that would have any bearing is confusing - I would hope that I could send these files from the road, etc)
    3. If I have Illustrator tied to any other (previous) computers - no & check
    4. Opened up my Library / Preferences - Had leftovers from previous Adobe Illustrator versions, he changed a filename in one of the older folders (when asked if removing the prior preference files would make a difference he said no)
    5. Had me leave the current network I was on and switch to another (used tethering on my iPad, still did not work)
    During all of this, two different techs signed into my account and were able to successfully send from Draw to Illustrator on their computers. When they tried to do the same and send to mine, no luck.
    At this point I was informed that they are going to continue looking at this, some other users have the same issue, and would get back to me when solved. When / if this works out I will repost

  • Drawing floorplans in illustrator

    Hi, can someone tell me how to set an architectural "scale" in illustrator so I can draw a floorplan using feet and inches without setting up an art board that is the size of my house.

    Perhaps CADtools from hotdoor.com can help you. I believe that it has an architectural scaling tool.

  • Create equal grid in illustrator using grid tool

    Hi
    Getting very frustrated, want to translate my vector illustrations to charts for cross stitch kits. Using the grid tool, but the lines aren't equally spaced? I have a 100cm x 100cm document at the moment, with 1 cm making a 'stitch'. I want a grid that is 100cm x 100cm, made up of 1cm x 1cm squares for simplicity. Then be able to print the design out on the grid.
    Is this possible please? Thanks

    AdobeAddict,
    To get actual saquares to align to, and to avoid any funny things that grids may present you with, you may:
    1) Create one 1x1cm square,
    2) Effect>Distort&Transform>Transform, set Move Horizontal to 1cm with 99 Copies,
    3) Effect>Distort&Transform>Transform, set Move Vertical to 1cm (or -1cm) with 99 Copies,
    That will create a set of 100x100 squares that are 1x1cm, then:
    4) Object>Expand Appearance to get selectable squares; you may Ungroup them.

  • Touch Screen Drawing With Adobe Illustrator And Photoshop

    I've read that people have used the touch screen monitors of there home computers to draw in Illustrator.  Is this true?  If so what types of computers/monitors allow this?
    Also any other devices?  I've heard of the Surface Pro and am still researching it.

    I have the surface pro 3 I7 256GB device. It works great using the Adobe suite CC 2014. If no keyboard is connected then you can use the new touch interface in Illustrator. The pen that the surface has 256 pressure levels. Which is usually more than enough even in photoshop.
    The touch interface is much larger than the normal interface making easier to see on the hyper resolution screen (2160x1440)
    If you use the normal interface (which you will need to at times) I recommend a mouse so you can easily select buttons and menu items.
    If you purchase a tablet and for any reason the pen does not work correctly or other defect, it is recommend to send it back for replacement. There have been some issues reported on the surface forum. But I do not know if these were early units or what. Just so you are aware.
    The reason why you should use the surface over other tablet is because of the pressure sensitive pen. Photoshop for example can use the capacitive pens for accessing the interface but the brush tool requires a Wacom style pen.
    To my knowledge most if not all tools in illustrator can use a capacitive pen.
    Most features like zoom, move even the new straight rule/French curve work by using two fingers.
    The best part of having a touch screen is the ability to see what you are drawing while you draw it.

  • Wish to move auto cad drawing to adobe illustrator. Wish to take blue print and layer it for viewing.

    We have our drawings in auto cad and need to move them to adobe illustrator  and layer the drawing  for viewing on a web site.

    You can import certain versions of DXF/DXW files into Illustrator and also edit them.
    If this can be done efficiently depends on the nature of the files (number of paths etc.)
    You could download a trial version and try it on your files.

  • Java applet to draw grid

    Hi, I have an exam Tuesday and an assignment Ive done before is to draw a chessboard pattern, but a past question has been to draw a grid pattern with red horizontal lines and blue vertical ones.
    It must display an input dialog asking the user how many lines to draw along each side and the pattern should size itself to fit exactly with the applet area.
    It says to use setColor(Color c) and fillRect(x1,y1,x2,y2): draws lines between (x1, y1) and (x2,y2)
    Here's my code for the chessboard:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    public class Q2_chessboard extends Applet {
         public void paint(Graphics g)
              int row, column, x, y;
              //for every row on the board
              for (row = 0;  row < 8;  row++ )
                   //for every column on the board
                   for (column = 0;  column < 8;  column++)
                        //Coordinates
                        x = column * 20;
                        y = row * 20;
                        //square is red if row and col are either both even or both odd.
                        if ( (row % 2) == (column % 2) )
                             g.setColor(Color.red);
                        else
                             g.setColor(Color.black);
                        g.fillRect(x, y, 20, 20);
    }But Ive tried for ages and cant turn this code into the code needed for the past question.
    I know I have to use:
              //Gets size of Applet
              int appletHeight = getSize().height;
              int appletWidth = getSize().width;But cant wrap my head around it where to use it.
    I had replaced the numerical values of row and column with
              input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter number lines to draw on each side:");
              lines = Integer.parseInt(input);but it came asked twice and I couldnt expand the applet without it asking for input again.

    Came up with this:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class VertLines extends Applet {
         public void paint(Graphics g)
              String input;
              int lines;
              input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter number of lines to draw on each side:");
              lines = Integer.parseInt(input);
              int horizontal, vertical, x, y;
              //Gets size of Applet
              int appletWidth = getSize().width;
              int appletHeight = getSize().height;
              //for every horizontal on the board
              for (horizontal = 0;  horizontal < lines;  horizontal++ )
                   //Coordinates
                   y = horizontal*(appletWidth/10);
                   g.setColor(Color.red);
                   g.drawLine(0, y, appletWidth, y);
              for (vertical = 0;  vertical < lines;  vertical++ )
                   //Coordinates
                   x = vertical*(appletHeight/10);
                   g.setColor(Color.blue);
                   g.drawLine(x, 0, x, appletHeight);
    }Doesnt really do 'exactly' what I want but its the closest ive gotten and ive had to use two different loops and drawLine instead of drawRect.
    The input dialog still comes up twice too.

  • How to draw grid?

    I want to draw a grid in an application. how do i do that?
    I want to use a efficient & effective way of doing it.
    I was thinking along the lines of drawing a 2D rectangle and draw horizontal/vertical lines in position to make up the grid. (this probably would be a hard coded way)
    would above work then?
    Any ideas?

    I was thinking along the lines of drawing a 2D rectangle and draw horizontal/vertical lines in position to make up the grid. (this probably would be a hard coded way)
    would above work then?Yes, this will work. Give it a try.
    You should also store a variable like gridX and gridY that you can change. These variables specify the amount of desired grid lines in the x and y direction. Then at draw time, based on the width and height of the component you caculate the interspacing betwen lines required to meet your desired # of lines and draw accordingly.

  • Perspective Grid in Illustrator

    I accidentally clicked on the Perspective Grid and now I cannot get it off my workspace. How do I get rid of it? What is this feature anyhow?!
    Thanks, Ben

    Funny how you find someone who is giving you good advice as scoldig you. Certainly if you did not have access to the help fles on lne and ou tried that and you usually use the help files I would have thought you would have mentioned it in your first post..
    Perhaps it was too much trouble.
    I am glad you were able to figure it out..
    BTW if the help files do not work nex time you can try doin a search on google.
    I find it hard to believe that a user that has been using Illustrator since 2007 does not one know wha the prespective grid is and two does not know to do a google search if the files fail. It really is hard to believe.
    This just a part of what a googke search will give you I would suggest that you ive it a try so you can get use to the idea thatthere are other users that have gone through a lot of trouble to post this information and it is a shame that there ae are many user IMO who let it go to waste because…well I don't know why.
    I know a fair amount about Illustratro and the other Adobe apps and when I need help I do like most users I use the help files and or do a search the user to user forum is best used for issues that might not be available that way or for a user who has tried but just missed something and needs to be pointed in the right direction.
    But I am glad youy were able to figure it out.\
    I will give you som information about the hiding and showing the perspective grid there is a keyboard shortcut/toggle for this as well. Itis easuily found out.

  • Draw - Envoyer vers illustrator fonctionne pas

    Bonjour,
