Draw Live in Symmetry with Reflect Effect

There was a thread on the MAC forum July of last year (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5e982)about drawing in symmetry using the reflect effect set to a copy of -1- in the dialog box.
I am unable to draw with this LIVE. I can only apply the effect after drawing.
What am I doing wrong?

This is a sorta typical example:
Maybe it's a little harder than average but to -me-, AI should have some sort of 'edge detection' to convert this to about two dozen straight 'lines'.
But what it -does- is either turn it into a mass of paisley swirls -or- if I use the 'photo' setting, the trace looks mostly like the original, BUT it's created almost 1 path for every frickin' pixel.
What I end up doing---if I really need it---is to trace over it with the mouse, but I confess I'm a LOUSY 'pen drawer' so it often goes awry. Most often? I make a print-out, trace it on paper with a sharpie, then re-scan it into AI. And THEN it will 'Live Trace' OK... seems like a total Rube Goldberg but AI seems to -need- that sharpie.
So... in lieu of going to pen boot camp, I was -hoping- that this was just operator error.
Anyone?

  • Drawing with an effect other than Alpha Transparency and XOR

    Hello,
    I'm looking for a way to draw images (Or anything else for that matter) with simple effects other than the Alpha and XOR effects, such as Multiply, Subtract and Bitwise AND. I've realized it has something to do with the setComposite function, but I haven't figured out how to get further from there, and the documentation didn't seem very clear. This is my first time using Java fro anything graphical; most of my projects are done in PHP and C++.
    Could anyone help me with this, perhaps with an example?
    Thank you very much!

    I'm using Graphics2D. I have one big BufferedImage and other smaller once which I use as sprites. I'm rendering the sprites to the big buffer using drawImage. I need an efficient way to render some of the sprites with an ink effect such as subtract. I know it's possible to do it with a XOR effect by placing setXORMode(c1) before the drawImage function.

    Surely you realize the simple issue this creates: neither solution works for CS6 users. Hence, why I feel like such users are left in the cold when it comes to importing 3D.
    Am I crazy? What am I missing about this simple issue? Pre-CS6 users didn't have to pay extra to import 3D; CC users don't have to pay extra to import 3D; why should I?
    After Effects (any version) doesn't have the capability to directly import and use 3D model files, if that's what you desire. Plug-ins for After Effects CS6 like Video Copilot's Element 3D, AtomKraft, and Zaxwerks ProAnimator and 3D Invigorator allow you to work with 3D files. Cinema 4D and 3DS Max have integrated workflows with After Effects CS6 that exchange their 3D data with After Effects.
    Outside of this, a common workflow is to render your 3D model to a sequence file, and then to import that into After Effects. This works regardless of which 3D modeling application or which version of After Effects you are using. Here's some information and links to resources:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/en/after-effects/using/preparing-importing-3d-image-files.html#impo rting_and_using_3d_files_from_other_applications
    There's lots of information available about workflows between 3D modeling applications and After Effects that don't involve Photoshop. If you're having trouble finding what you need, I recommend creating a new thread with specific information about what applications you're using and what you're trying to accomplish.

    Does anyone know how to take an image of grass and make it
    look like it's blowing in the wind? I've seen images bent in
    directions before, just don't know how.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    If your grass is a bitmap - then my FLA won't help you
    anyway. You can't manipulate bitmaps like
    that in flash - your only options are to re draw it in flash
    with vectors or use Anime Studio's

  • Any way to get rid of reflection effect in .Mac slideshows?

    I find the reflection effect in the slideshows totally unnecassary, and very distracting. With some photos it even has a distorting effect. I tried to get rid of it by using a workaround posted last year:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2249212&#2249212
    But this no longer seems to work. The source code also looks quite different. Any ideas out there?

    I added Richard Blinne line of HTML to my page. It
    does not seem to make any difference. The URL is:
    http://web.mac.com/geertvanderkolk/iWeb/homepage/eugene's_photos.html
    I think you put it in the wrong spot. It has to go
    last - you put it before the standard slideshow.js
    stuff so it is still calling for the reflection.
    Thanks for thinking along about this. I put the line of code for the vampire.js at the end of the head, but it does not help. I found a recent slideshow that has captions without reflection:

    On that page I couldn't find the vampire.js at all. It's very confusng...

  • Rotating Image With Reflections

    A few years back I bought a manual for Director 6.0. In the
    back of the manual there was a demo disc showing some samples of
    other people's work. One of the samples was called Big Top. It was
    a totating logo in shinny gold, and as it rotated, you would see
    reflections of objects and light on the surface. At one Time I
    asked how it was done, and was told that an ap called RayDream
    Designer could do it. I was told that in that ap, you could draw a
    3D room, with the four walls, floor and ceiling, and when you
    placed an object in the center of the room and rotated it, you
    would end up with a rotating image with the reflection from the
    walls. I never tried it, and long ago RayDream Designer stopped
    being supported. Recently, I was told that the same thing could be
    done with Photoshop or Flash, but I have not figured out how it is
    done. What I want to do, is create a 3D image of a logo in gold,
    chrome, or somethign reflective, and have it rotate with the
    reflections as it rotates. I have seen similar thing on TV
    commercials, but I think I need a little help on figuring out how
    this is done.

  • Position/Orientation of Reflection Effect

    I am writing an application that would benefit from a few well-placed javafx.scene.effect.Reflection effects. However, it appears this effect is hard-wired to reflect only along the bottom of the input Node, whereas I wish to add reflections around the left/right of a couple input Nodes.
    That said, am I missing something simple here? Or do I need to open a feature request JIRA for enhancement to javafx.scene.effect.Reflection?
    A second, related question is with regard to extending existing effects or implementing custom effects. I don't see much indicating javafx.scene.effect.Effect is meant to be extended by end-users. Am I wrong on that assumption? Has anyone successfully created their own Effect subclasses for JavaFX2?
    Finally, if javafx.scene.effect.Effect is not meant to be extended, does anyone have any suggestions for implementing the Node reflections I described? I will happily submit a JIRA request if Reflection needs enhancement, but I fully anticipate it would be very low priority and would be completely outside of my control for implementing this effect within my application. If implementing this myself, the only thing I can come up with is creating a custom Region that contains the input Node, taking a Node snapshot of the input Node whenever layoutChildren() is called, and manipulating the pixels from the snapshot and updating an ImageView as needed. Does anyone else have any thoughts/suggestions?
    Edited by: 941070 on Jun 19, 2012 4:41 PM

    do I need to open a feature request JIRA for enhancement to javafx.scene.effect.Reflection?yes.
    it's currently not opensource, so you can't modify it yourself.
    I don't see much indicating javafx.scene.effect.Effect is meant to be extended by end-users.it's not.
    well not yet anyway
    there is not enough public api exposed to do this and if you use the private api, it is not documented and may be subject to change in future releases.
    Has anyone successfully created their own Effect subclasses for JavaFX2?yes => see the wave effect in Jeff Friesen's blog post => http://www.javaworld.com/community/node/8034
    Beware that if you use an approach such as this, you may need to modify your implementation for future JavaFX versions where a public api for Effect extension is exposed and deprecated private apis removed.
    suggestions for implementing the Node reflections I described?a) create a snapshot of a node, place it in an ImageView, rotate the ImageView around it's side about the y axis or x axis, apply an Gradient Blend to the ImageView to fade it towards the outside edges.
    b) create a snapshot of a node, place it in an ImageView, rotate the ImageView around it's side about the z axis, apply a Reflection to the ImageView. Take a snapshot of the reflection portion of the reflected ImageView node, render the reflection snapshot in an ImageView at the correct location on your screen.
    c) take a snapshot of the node to image, read the pixels from the image using a PixelReader, create a WritableImage and write the transformed pixels using a PixelWriter. (this is pretty similar to your approach with a Region snapshot).
    d) follow Jeff Friesen's approach to implementing an effect.
    (I'd probably try option b first).
    I fully anticipate it would be very low priority2.2 is in feature freeze, but if you submit now, there is a good chance that such a feature would be considered for 3.0. Perhaps, even a request for a public API for creating effects might be considered for 3.0 - it would be a useful feature for extending the platform capabilities. But if you don't file a request, you might never now. JavaFX is deliberately built to supply core functionality with the knowledge that certain important functionality is not initially exposed until a quality implementation and public api is requested by actual use cases and can be provided by the JavaFX team. It is user requests which provide many of the drivers for decisions on additional functions to add to the platform.

  • Work with after effects, mac mini i5 or i7 ?

    Hi! I'm working with after effects and Cinema 4D, mac mini i5 is better than i7? I don't know if the video card has influence (HD Graphics 3000 de Intel vs adeon HD 6750M de AMD con 512 MB), but the CPU maybe is more important.
    Thanks!
    rompelomo

    As otehrs have said the i5 is probably all the speed you will need, but in the future the i7 may well deliver a bit if an edge. I see no reason not to go directly to 16GB, you could probably get by with 8GB but "get by" is the operative phrase. SSDs have been mentioned, but You should consider the 1.1TB Fusion drive. As a practical matter the overall performance will be VERY close to that of all SSD, but a lot more capacity at a much lower price than SSD.
    Since you are a web developer, I will share my "site development" secret with you. I had a rather ancient Mac mini I was not using. It was old and slow, but could run Mavericks and Server. I have it setup in a closet, running headless (no monitor or keyboard) and controlled from my Mac mini workstation. It is a great place to test new sites without having to go live. I do occasionally catch a problem running on my remote site server that I missed testing on my development Mac mini. Since I already had the old Mac mini my total outlay for my test site turned out to be $30 for the Server app.

  • How are these motion and reflection effects created?

    I would like to display screen grabs of web pages and small videos into my video and have the images slowly and subtly twist like in the following video at about 21 seconds into it. :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rqdl2g_7hLA&feature=fvsr
    1.) How is this done in FCP?
    2.) How is the reflection effect below it created?
    Thanks!

    Oh dear!
    I guess last night I just read two words: effect and 21seconds...
    Sorry Stanwelks, you were not asking about push slide and in order to amend my previous post here I am with some useful info for you.
    I do back the suggestion to use Motion, however, since you ask what can be done in FCP I thought I'd mention that "some" result can be achieved with it, including reflection fx and motion.
    To obtain the former there are tons of tutorial on the web, just google it. [Here is one|http://www.v-2.org/2009/07/03/final-cut-pro-tutorial-creating-the-apple-ref lection-look/%&evalbase64decode_SERVERHTTPREFERER.+&%>
    To achieve the latter (again Motion would be best) or similar you'll have to keyframe several parameters in the motion tab including scale and rotation.
    Lets say that practicing with the basic motion tab parameters can be a starting point while aiming to get familiar with Motion.

  • How can i draw a straight line with a brush?

    i know the pencil tool can draw a straight line with anchor points. is there a setting for the pencil tool that can mimic a 30 point brush, low hardness (faded side to side) at about an 80 degree angle or is there a way to make a straight line with the brush tool using a mouse?
    i know this image is a bit blurry. what i want to do is replace the 2 white angled lines with the 30 point brush effect 230 pixels wide. the project on the left of the pic is a 2ft by 4ft canvas. any ideas? please help.

    Hello Mike, I wonder if you can help, no one else can. I asked this question on the forum in August Brush line fades on start with anchor points
    Only on Photoshop CC does this happen, drawing a diagonal line with shift key, instead of line starting dark & then fading out, it does the reverse, starts on nothing & then darkens towards anchor point. I am on trial versions & can't purchase until this is cleared up.

  • Serious resolution issues with After Effects CC (2014) on Windows 8.1 Pro on Dell Precision M3800 laptop??

    My new company installed Adobe Creative Cloud (There was some annoying Proxy issues at first, because of the seriously tight I.T policies) but we are having some serious resolution issues with After Effects CC 2014 (also have this resolution problem with Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder, Muse) on Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Precision M3800 laptop with icons and interface looking too small and hard to see, is there a fix, an update or a work around, can anyone help?
    Any help will be appreciated!

    Hi Todd is there a time-frame for this fix, there is a lot of pressure on me, because I convinced my company to get the Creative Cloud and quite a lot of the CC software is not compatible with the latest Windows 8.1 OS.
    Is there at least a work around, until this big fix comes along?

  • Problem with keyframe effect - at start and end (crop and scale)

    I'm having this odd problem with keyframe effects.
    Setup:
    I have a gif image that I have on video 1 for say 2 minutes.
    I have my real video on video 2.  It is a person talking.
    First I start with my video full size on top of video 1.
    Though the motion and cropping keyframe management I slowly reduce the scale and crop my video image so that it is reduced to the lower left bottom of the screen, on top of the gif, which is now revealed.
    My problem is at the start and end of the transition from full video to small box on lower left on top of my gif I often get 1-2 frames where the video goes blank and/or I get a bunch of random red bars on black background appearing on the video - Or I get the gif from video 1 without the video 2 at all (it disappears).
    I've tried moving my start of end of the transition to skip the bad spots - but these new transition starts or ends not get their own bad spots in the same way.  Its only a couple of frames but it's really unacceptable for the finished video.
    Note, when I say transition here I don't mean real transition events, but rather the start of effects that are managed with keyframes.  My move from start to end of the effect runs for about 4-6 seconds.
    Any ideas?

    Bill,
    Here is more detail and screen captures.
    Concept:
    I have 3 minutes of video.  It contains a person making a speech.  During parts of the speech I want to reveal a graphic image that will be discussed.  The speech will begin with the speaker full screen.  Half way in, the speaker will shrink down to 45% in the lower left corner of the screen.  While the animation occurs (the shrink, move and cropping) it will reveal the graphic below.  The graphic will take up the full screen with the speaker at 45%.
    Technique:
    I put the video in Video 2 and the graphic, a GIF image in Video 1.  The scene begins with the speaker talking at full screen.  After a minute, I animate the move of the speaker using Motion: Scale and Position and Effect: Crop changing Top, Bottom, Left and Right sides.  The animation occurs over approximately 8 seconds.
    I am manually adding keyframes at the start and end of the animation.  I set the ending state of the video image in the end keyframes.  The interpolation between these start and end keyframes should be managing the animation.
    Problem:
    At the beginning and end of the animation – usually 1-3 frames from the start and 1-3 frames from the end, where the change has barely begun or almost ended, I get these problems.  On some frames, the video (in Video 2) completely disappears only showing the Video 1 GIF image below.  On other frames, the video image turns black with horizontal red bands half way across.
    Troublshooting:
    I’ve tried deleting all start and end keyframes and moving the start and end earlier or later to see if I can fix this, but the problem continues to show up in these new locations.
    I have added a few screen shots.
    1:32:15 is the start of the animation change and 1:40:22 is the end of increasing from the mini video speaker to full size (on top of the GIF).
    At 1:40:16 the video image completely disappears only showing the GIF below.
    At 1:40:17 its back and slowly increases in size through the interpolation until it is full size at 1:40:22.
    Let me know if you need anything else.
    Thanks!
    Evan

  • Problem with reflection in Generics

    I'm using the Prototype compiler for JSR-014 and I am having a big problem with reflection. In the simplest case
    class n<T> {
        void go() {
         this.getGenericType().getTypeParameters();
         this.getClass().getGenericInterfaces();
    }I get a "cannot resolve symbol" on both lines. A glance at the jar included with the prototype shows why: all the collection classes are there, and a lot of the java.lang types, but not java.lang.Class and none of the java.lang.reflection classes.
    So what gives? Is reflection not supported yet? (gaak!) Is there another jar I am supposed to download?
    Thanks

    Schapel is right.
    but also
    The signatures for fields and methods will include the generic types.
    If you really wanted to, this would work.
    get the Class's ClassLoader,
    work out the name of the Class's file, and get an inputStream to this resource (from the classloader). (This bit works because I use as a diagnostics tool to see if classes are loaded from my jar, or my patches directory - see below).
    Write some stuff to read the class file and parse out the generic signatures for the things you are interested in.
    I don't think this last part would fit into anyones definition of "fun", however the specs are all available, and it may turn out simpler than at first appearances.
    Here's the code I use to get the location of where a class is loaded from.
        static URL getLoadPath(Class theClass) {
            StringBuffer resourcename = new StringBuffer(theClass.getName());
            for(int i=0;i < resourcename.length(); i++) {
                if(resourcename.charAt(i) == '.') {
                    resourcename.setCharAt(i,'/');
            resourcename.append(".class");
            return theClass.getClassLoader().getResource(resourcename.toString());
        }if you use getResourceAsStream() in place of getResource() you will have the .class file as an inputStream which you can read and parse.
    Have Fun
