Drawing Custom Curves, Shapes, S Shapes, etc.?

How do I draw symmetric curves, custom shapes, S shapes, etc?
I am a beginner, and I have PSE 6.  I can upgrade to version 8 or use plugins if necessary.  I’ve been googling this, but is the pencil the same as the pen?  Where are the Paths options?
-->  My question is I am wanting to create custom shapes.  For example, a half circle curve, or an S shape.  How do I do that? I’d rather not use the Marquee tool.
Attached is an example of a curve that I want to reproduce.
          Thanks for any help.

No, the pen tool is only in Photoshop. The best you can do in Elements is download shapes that have been made in Photoshop or draw out a shape and either add or subtract from the shape. You don't have a paths palette either although they exist just not accessible as in Photoshop.  You'd have to save the shape file for reuse as you can't define custom shapes in Elements.
Type  custom shapes Photoshop and you will probably find the shape you need in one of the many freeware sets out there. They'll say for Photoshop but you can install and use them in Elements.
For the shape of the .bmp file you posted, you can cut a rectangle shape with a circle.
1. Draw out a rectangle with the rectangle shape tool.
2. Press the subtract icon in the options bar.
3. Draw out a circle to remove the unwanted area.
4. Save the file as a PSD with a name you can remember so you can use it whenever needed.
Note: The shape will be still be vector provided you saved as a PSD so it can be resized without degrading it.
If you hover over the icons, tool tips will display telling what each one does. Here's an image of the icons you're looking for in the options bar in step #2.
Example of shape cutting...path lines are present because I haven't clicked away from the layer before taking the screen shot but useful as it shows how I cut the shape. To get the curve centered, it would be helpful to add some grids. I didn't use them in the image below and you can see I'm a little off center.

  • How to access visio drawing (.vdw - in SharePoint page) shapes in C#

    Hi,
    I need to get all shapes (which has links to other sharepoint pages) from visio drawing published in Visio web Access webpart. I could able to get Visio web Access webpart through code and get the diagram path.
    1.how to get the drawing and shapes in it from webpart?
    2, Does it require to download the drawing locally to get all shapes in it? If so, shall use interop.visio?
    3. Have seen some javascript vwa API to getShapes, etc. Is it available in C#?
    4. Tried with interop.visio for the drawing which is stored on drive. It gives "exception occured" while open the .vdw file. (Documents.Open(@"C:\test.vdw");
    How to do this? Please guide. Environment (VS2010, SP2010, Visio 2010). thx

  • Any place to download additional shapes, clip art, etc?

    Relative Mac Newbie here (and even more so for iWork/Keynote).
    While I still use Word and PowerPoint (for Mac), I'm trying to see how Pages and Keynote would work for me. (Love the idea of completely weening myself from Micro$oft!)
    In Keynote, I find the number of "shapes" really limiting, as well as the lack of integrated clip art.
    Is there anywhere I can download additional shapes, clipart, themes, etc?
    Thanks!

    An alternative to using Powerpoint is to import SVG files into Keynote using the command-line utility I developed:
    http://mcb.berkeley.edu/labs/zusman/dave/svg2key/
    With it you can create shapes in a graphics editor such as Inkscape or Illustrator then import them into Keynote via SVG.
    Be sure to check out The Open Clip Art Library at www.openclipart.org for some royalty-free SVG files.

  • Drawing a curved line

    Okay, so I feel like this is a really stupid question, but how in the world can you make a line curved? I've inserted a line as a shape and want to make it curved (similar to the curve in the Apple Demo with the moving airplane -- I'm trying to do something like that). I know how to make the objects move, but I want the path to show. An earlier post said to draw the path first and then create the path to match that. That's fine and doable, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to draw a curved line!

    You use the Pen tool, found at the bottom of the Shapes dropdown menu, to draw a curve. Select the pen, then click on the slide to put down the starting point of your curve. Next, click and hold where you want your curve to end, and drag away from the endpoint that is created. You should see two grey "handles" sprout from that endpoint, with your cursor at the end of one of them. The point you have created is a Bezier control point, and the handles control the angle and depth of the curve. Hit Escape to finish. (Your curve will likely be filled -- you can adjust this in the Graphic Inspector.)
    One Bezier point will produce a curve that only curves one direction. To create a more complex curve with multiple inflections, you will need to add more points. Select your curve, and in the Format menu, under the Shape flyout menu, choose "Make Editable". You should now see your two endpoints in red. If you hold down the Option key and click on the path, you will add another control point. Double-clicking on the point will toggle it from a corner point to a Bezier control point.
    Bezier curves can seem complicated at first, but this is an extremely powerful way of creating arbitrary shapes, including complex curves.
    (Note that the paths in the Motion Action are also Bezier curves.)

  • Drawing Custom 2D Graph : Need Help!

    Hi,
    I'm new to this forum, but I figured this would be the best place to ask for help.
    I'm currently working on a new project; a Graphing Calculator for algoriths and such. I've been with Java for a while now, but I have ran into a few snags with my new project.
    [1] For now, I have a line wizard that seperates a algorithm (linear, polynomial only for now) into chunks. How would I go out Parsing it totally from a string, in any format. I need to include such mathmatical operations such as sin( , cos( and ect. I have not even started on a rough draft yet, because I don't know where to start.
    [2] My custom GraphClass is having a hard time repersenting different rates for minium and maxium axis size. For some reason both axis wont draw in the right spot, meaning my X() and Y() are coded wrong. This is some of my code for now:
    For the full class file goto : [http://pastebin.com/Ty9ndCc4]
    public int width = 390;
    public int length = 390;
    public static int minX = (int) -200;

For some reason both axis wont draw in the right spot, meaning my X() and Y() are coded wrong. This is some of my code for now:The X axis in Java is just standard increasing to the right and decreasing to the left, therefore, you can easily center by just dividing your maximum X by 2 for a center position. Y on the other hand is going to be a little more difficult, since the Y will be decreasing in the upward direction and increasing downward. You can easily get the center the same way as with the X axis (divid by 2), but then when you plot, you just change the sign on all of your Y coordinates.
    I prefer to use a BufferedImage for my graphics, line graphs or custom rendering for games and etc. I can work with that and it will then easily render onto the graphics context of a JPanel.
    Hope this help you out.
    BTW: your posted code seems to have been gnawed on by an ugly moster or something--it is hideously corrupted, but your link showing your full source shows decent enough code.

  • Custom Transaction Types, Subject Profiles etc...

    Hi all,
    Did anyone worked on custom Transaction Type on SDCR?
    I know that this is CRM specific stuff to configure, but want to check what are the implications in modifying exisiting SDCR..  Well, in the meanwhile, we need to work on custom Code Groups, Subject Profiles etc..
    What is the impact on upgrades if we modify the SAP defined Transaction Types SDCR?
    Please correct me if I am wrong in my approach.
    Response is greately appreciated.
    Regards,
    Mike.

    Thanks for response.
    I tried to copy and modify the subject profiles, catalogs etc.  I could able to create Change Request with the custom transaction type, but not able to authorize the change request.  And I am using SAP defined action profile for custom transaction type.
    And also little bit confused how to attach the custom change request to support message (we need to select the action item "create change document").  It seems there are lot of modifications to be done all the way from support message to urgent/normal correction.
    Please advice.
    Regards,
    Mike.

  • Remove gaps when drawing custom items into column data browser

    I am drawing custom controls in a column-view data browser, and find that there are margins on each side the drawing region. This is especially annoying when I need to draw the highlighted background for selected items because then the selection bar has gaps between columns.
    The browser has "variable width columns" enabled, and the columns in question have min and max widths set to 50 pixels. The drawing region that I am passed in the callback is 26 pixels wide, meaning there are 12 pixel margins on each side. Anyone know how to get rid of these so that I can make my own decision about margin size and properly fill in the background for selection highlighting? Thanks in advance.
    (See sites.google.com/site/polyritmo/gaps-in-column-view for a picture)

    Never did get an answer on this one. Does that mean it's not possible to make this work properly?

    Drawing a curved line using the pen tool, dragging the text cursor over the line but will only give me a small area to write in, in-between a circle and a circle with a cross in?

    If you change your tool to the "Direct Selection Tool" (A) then you should be able to adjust the area for you to type in...

  • Draw custom selection frame(dashed rectangle), while mouse dragging is moving

    Hi All,
    Maybe anyone has experience of drawing custom selection frame(dashed rectangle) for selected page items.
    I have to draw a custom selection frame(dashed rectangle), when I drag mouse cursor, while left mouse button is pressed.
    Thank you!
    Regards.

    There are two possible answers:
    1. If you use the getGraphics() in your event dispatching code, then the rectangle disappears because the component you paint on gets repainted, and it has no idea about your rectangle it should paint. The painting routine should ALWAYS be written in paintComponent(Graphics gr) method. (I wish they made the getGraphics() method protected).
    2. If you paint it in the write way, it might disappear because the components that it overlaps might cover it.
    Now a fix:
    Because you need to paint on TOP of everything in the JPanel, you can either:
    1. The dirty way: overwrite the paint(Graphics gr) method of your JPanel, first call super.paint(gr) then paint the rectangle.
    2. A proper way: Add a non-opaque JPanel on top of you JLayeredPane (similar to GlassPane), and paint the rectangle on it (in it's paintComponent method).
    Regards,
    Marcin
    You're probably doing some getGraphics() drawing which is usually wrong. If a component gets repainted by the system it loses all the information
    Now to the question:
    Your rectangle disappears beacause the Components that are overlapping it

  • Freehand drawing with curve support

    Hi there,
    I have here a more complicated question. Maybe you can follow me.
    Is there a way within PS to support freehand drawings. What I mean is a support in that way which makes hand drawed curves more smooth. You know what I mean. I think Marcomedias Flash does such things. Is this also in PS availible?

    Not that I know of. Since PS does not draw Bezier curves, there is no way to smooth them. Any curvature in PS is merely a result of the stepping and accumulation while drawing the strokes. Maybe it does some smoothing on the fly under the hood, but not in the way you can in other Adobe apps.

  • Brush, Pattern, Font, Custom Shape Tool, gradient, etc organization

    On record, I have over 1,000 brushes, over 1,000 fonts, and I'm making other resources on the fly. I have an issue here: I can't find anything!!
    (I also have a second issue with resources and crashes, but I'll get to that later.)
    Is it that hard to ask Adobe to put in some font organization, tags for brushes and a search engine for them? Sometimes it's a pain trying to find the right font, but say, I think, "Hmm.. I want a font that is remotely Western, probably serif" there is no way in Adobe Photoshop to get through all of those fonts in a timely manner which means I'm spending about 2 hours shuffling through the fonts trying to find the right one. Sure there is a panel where you can select your favorite ones, but that's not by category... there is no sane way to find the font just for you.
    Same thing for brushes. Often the problem with brushes is that people lose where they've come from, meaning no credit to the brush maker and when you want, say, fairies because you need some, you can't remember where the hell they are. And if you do, you have tons of brushes to sort through. People have a compulsion to not label their brush sets properly, which drives me nuts because they also expect you to give them credit. How about Adobe gives them a leg up? Give them a space not only to name the brush, but give it tags, a name and a website where it was found at. (Not required, but can be used or even expanded down.) And give it search capability. (So I type in birds, then the brushes menu retrofits to show all brushes with the tag of birds, I delete the search line, all the brushes come back, I type in standard. All of the round brushes come up, etc. I type in spiritsighs and all of her brushes come up... and so on). Gradients, etc should be the same.
    Sure you can clear your brushes, but do you know how many brush packs I have to sort through, then load to get the right one? --;; A pain. (Plus brush packs are often lost in computer crashes, harddrive wipes, etc.)
    So I'm asking for a way to organize and find these resources more easily, with better searching abilities, because while the guys on Photoshop TV can afford to dump their probably thousands of brushes for a demo, isn't it kind of odd that they often say, "Where is it? "Ah there it is" in their tutorials? They've apologized at least a dozen times for the "ah there it is" and the "I'm sorry Adobe doesn't give a font organizer", but here is a crappier alternative.
    I'd like this in other programs in the CS suite too. Especially the Historyless Illustrator (Illustrator needs History) and InDesign. InDesign should have had font management a long time ago--most of it is about type setting anyway.
    Second part:
    Crashes. You've spent 2 hours making the right brush, stayed past your bedtime, made the brush, and voila, Photoshop crashes. You've just lost 2 hours of work, your files, which in your artistic daze you forgot to save and any chance of getting that brush file back.
    So I propose three fixes which are already out there in Computer land that Photoshop hasn't implemented. (And other Adobe products should also implement).
    1. The auto save. When the user isn't using the screen, or at x intervals it will ask the user if they want to save, which is settable by the user (prompting and the auto-saving). Microsoft has it, Most Mac programs have it, Adobe Photoshop should also have it.
    2. Generated back up files. At some intervals, instead of a full save, in case of a crash, Adobe Photoshop, when prompted will create back up files.
    3. A way for Photoshop and Illustrator when creating brushes, etc to auto-save said brush when the brush is created, rather than generating a pack. Like it updates a file in Photoshop when one creates a brush. This means it will hard save to the computer and one doesn't have to make a brush pack or shut down photoshop to get the brush to save. I think this would save a lot of people heartbreak.
    Minor peeve, but when I hit undo often it jumps to the previous layer I was at. I'd like an option to turn this "feature" off.

    not sure if anybody mentioned  this.
    tumasoft.com has a product for viewing and organizing your  brushes patterns etc. 25 bucks.
    This should be native to Photoshop rather than from an external program. It's in many other programs,so I don't understand why Photoshop doesn't have a system native to it.
    To be blunt: If that has happened more than once to you and you still  don’t save useful, newly created brushes regularly you should, in my  opinion, improve your workflow.
    Saving a brush into a set should be doable  in something like 15 seconds, less if you use Keyboard Shortcuts.
    Even  less than that if one automates the task with a Script (which could  then be invoked either via a Keyboard Shortcut or Configurator Panel).
    Let  me know if you want to give it a try.
    You misunderstand me. I save the brush into the brush panel, and I may have the brush in up and working, but to save the brush permanently, you have one of these options:
    1. Quit Photoshop between each brush made. The Save Brush Preset was NOT a permanent solution. It should be automatically saved to a file. Such as "all". Illustrator has a similar feature, though this really needs to be streamlined for Illustrator as well.
    2. Save as a brush pack. However, if you have a bunch of brushes planned, this becomes a pain to do. This means out of say the 100 brush packs you have to find it every single time and add it and even if Photoshop crashes, the brushes you saved won't show up in the brush menu, because Photoshop doesn't remember any of the brushes you made until you quit Photoshop. This means then, if you're in the middle of making a brush and Photoshop crashes, you have to bring up said brush pack.
    Do you really make brushes? 'cause I do. I make lots of brushes and it annoys me to no end that when I save the brush to the brush panel it's not a permanent save, but temporary. It should be permanent and I shouldn't have to shut down Photoshop to get it to save automatically to the Photoshop Brush palette.
    I spend a lot of time refining my brushes by testing them, making them, and then testing them again. When I get the brush perfect, and find that something big has happened, I expect the brushes I saved to the brush palate should have saved permanently. But test it... You can force quit Photoshop, after saving to a brush to the brush palate and find that it's not at the end of the brush palate anymore. This is wacky and should be fixed. I view it as an internal bug rather than a "feature" i.e. something they didn't think about when they gave users the ability to create their own brushes. This is very programable as other programs can do it and as you pointed out it, it is minor. Especially with the advent of workable backup files, it has become ten times easier. Since Photoshop remembers on shut down, it may be even more minor--just shifting some code from the shut down process to the "save to Brush palate" process. I wouldn't mind say 5-10 seconds more of waiting while it saves if the  save ends up in a permanent save.
    But as for organizing Brush Presets  and Brush-name search capabilities Photoshop could indeed do with some  improvements. (I still work with CS4, so I don’t know what changes  exactly CS5  brought in that respect.)
    Fonts on the other hand … I suspect  the risks connected with implementing any expanded font-capabilities in  Photoshop may be significant.
    Font organizers already exist. And programs have implemented them with success without hindering the work flow. I'm proposing this in addition to the "favorites" and the type-in pull down menu, not instead of it. As there are working examples, I doubt it will be that difficult to mock up. This isn't like a new fangled idea--so making it isn't as difficult. It should have been in In Design a long, long time ago... All the Adobe Products need one. I wouldn't even mind if it was an external program that worked with the suite. (Similar to Font Book for Mac with the Coco Products)

  • Draw only part of a shape transparent

    Hi,
    I have two shapes neither of which is transparent. However, the shapes overlap and I want the intersecting region on the foreground shape to be transparent so that we can see the background shape.
    So how do I draw part of a shape transparently and the rest of it not transparent? If it is any help, I have a curve in front and a rectangle behind it. I want the curve to be semi-transparent whenever it covers the rectangle.
    Maybe there is a much easier way to do this?

    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.geom.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class SeeThru extends JPanel {
        protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) {

            int w = getWidth();
            int h = getHeight();

  • Draw an irregular cylinder-style shape in 3D

    Hi All
    I am new in java 3D. I got such a situation that I have the following data:
    point101: (0, 0.3f, 0.4f) // degree:0; radius:0.3f; Z: 0.4f
    point102: (10, 0.2f, 0.4f)
    point103: (20, 0.35f,0.4f)
    point201: (0, 0.35f, -0.4f)
    point202: (10, 0.32f, -0.4f)
    point203: (20, 0.4f, -0.4f)
    I used QuadArray to draw this shape. However, when I change the view point with mouse, some parts were invisible on the screen.
    I guess QuadArray is not correct, is it?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    David
    My code attached here:
    private Geometry shapeGeometry() {
    QuadArray geo;
    int N = 8;
    int totalN = 4*N;
    Point3f coords[] = new Point3f[totalN];
    Color3f colors[] = new Color3f[totalN];
    Color3f red = new Color3f(1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f);
    float[] r ={0.3f, 0.35f,0.2f,0.32f,0.35f,0.4f,0.3f,0.35f,0.3f, 0.3f,0.36f,0.3f,0.35f,0.4f,0.3f,0.5f};
    float w = 0.4f;
    int n;
    double a;
    float x, y;
    x = (float) (r[0] * Math.cos(0));
    y = (float) (r[1] * Math.sin(0));
    coords[0] = new Point3f(x, y, -w);
    coords[1] = new Point3f(x, y, w);
    for(int i=0; i<colors.length; i++)
    colors[i] = red;
    for(a = 0,n = 1; n < N; a = 2.0*Math.PI/(N-1) * ++n){
    x = (float) (r[2*n] * Math.cos(a));
    y = (float) (r[2*n+1] * Math.sin(a));
    coords[4*n-2] = new Point3f(x, y, w);
    coords[4*n-1] = new Point3f(x, y, -w);
    coords[4*n] = new Point3f(x, y, -w);
    coords[4*n+1] = new Point3f(x, y, w);
    x = (float) (r[0] * Math.cos(0));
    y = (float) (r[1] * Math.sin(0));
    coords[4*N-2] = new Point3f(x, y, w);
    coords[4*N-1] = new Point3f(x, y, -w);
    geo = new QuadArray (totalN,
    TriangleFanArray.COORDINATES|TriangleFanArray.COLOR_3);
    tfa.setCoordinates(0, coords);
    tfa.setColors(0,colors);
    return geo;
    }

    oops: I don't know how to draw the top and bottom of the shape. Any one can tell me how to do it? Thanks

  • Office Open Xml (PPT Office 2013) - Drawing.xml looses the SmartArt Shapes Information

    I am facing a weird problem. When I open and edit a PPT presentation containing SmartArt and then save it, it looses all the SmarArt shapes information present inside the drawing.xml (OXML) inside the diagrams folder. This happens only when I edit any other
    slide (like changing title text) in the presentation not containing the SmartArt and then save it. The whole SmartArt shapes information just vanishes and somehow PPT is able to regenerate the presentation from this drawing.xml when i reopen the presentation
    and doesn't show it as corrupt. Initially I thought its an issue specific to my machine but I checked it on other machines and its replicable on them as well. Is it an issue with PPT in Office 2013?

    I called nViida thinking it might be an nVidia issue.  He told me to download the 335.70 beta which I did and installed.  Didn't help.
    I think called Microsoft and first guy took control of my PC and suggested I install Office Pro 2013 x86 (32-bit) and then transferred me to 3 people before I got disconnected; very frustrating having to explain my issue 3 times.
    I uninstalled Office Pro 2013 64 bit and installed x86 and my problems went away.  The Tech told me that the 32 bit version is more stable and they haven't had as many issues and told me that 3rd party apps integrate (like ACT! Contact management which
    I use) so I installed the x86 version and NOW WORD, EXCEL AND POWERPOINT ARE WORKING.
    I need to get IE 11 x86 working but that isn't that important as I use Firefox as my main browser and Chrome secondarily.
    Not the greatest resolution but something didn't like the 64 bit version of Office when I did the 8.1 Update and Office updates yesterday.
