Drawing glitch in Appleworks

Hi. I got my eMac with Appleworks in spring of '05. Last summer I was learning to draw on the computer using Appleworks and the Missing Manual, and just figuring it out as I went along. There was one funny thing that happened that I wonder if anyone can explain.
I did a drawing of a boy sitting on a stool reading a book, with a dragon looking over his shoulder (an illustration of About Fantasy). Everything was carefully placed front to back, grouped and regrouped.
Most of it was done with the freehand tool, but I drew the stool with the rounded rectangle tool. When I rotated or resized the drawing, most every thing was fine, but the pieces of the stool, even though they were grouped, fell apart into a pile of sticks! (correctly resized or rotated, though) Everything had to be totally reassembled.
It was sort of funny — the first time.
The point of a vector drawing is the resizability, of course. Has anyone an idea what happened, and if there's a fix for it?

Hi Mina,
It's a known issue, but AFAIK, there's not a known remedy. The problem has been around since AppleWorks 5 or earlier. You'll find the it extends to the clip art supplied with AppleWorks as well.

    Nothing that comes with Lion.
Just put, "osx drawing program free," in Google and take your pick.
First one on the list is one called Paintbrush: http://paintbrush.sourceforge.net/
You could also just search the App Store.

  • Safari Screen Draw Glitch? - History Coverflow Appears within Web Pages

I've started noticing on a few websites that somewhere within the webpage a portion of History Coverflow will appear within the website I'm visiting...
    See pic below
Running Safari 5.0.2 with all OS updates installed.

I'm not getting the CoverFlow interface partially appearing in windows like you are, but on two of my Macs, I've noticed hundreds of +error: unknown error code: invalid drawable+ messages in the console from Safari.
I think it's definitely a problem with CoverFlow, as when I launch Safari without going near the History or TopSites screens, I don't get these messages. As soon as I invoke the History window (CoverFlow view), once I return to browsing, the messages start. It's something to do with Safari capturing and caching screen images.
The way I've avoided this until it's fixed is to change my default homepage to anything other than TopSites, and to use the History menu rather than the CoverFlow view.
I've certainly had a few little glitches in Safari 5.x generally.

  • Problems with AppleWorks drawing docs under Snow Leopard

Since I installed Snow Leopard, I've encountered two major problems:
(Problem 1) AppleWorks gets corrupted when dragging a picture file (.jpg or .png) from the desktop into a drawing document. Various dialogs (e.g. "Format : Document..." or "Format : Ruler : Settings ..." or "Options : Object Size ...") become uneditable. These dialogs will display blank boxes instead of the given object settings, and nothing can be entered into these boxes. AppleWorks must be shut down and restarted in order to continue work.
(Problem 2) When a formula (i.e. an equation) has been created in a MathType window, selected and copied, it takes ages to make AppleWorks the active application (spinning rainbow coloured ball appears and keeps spinning for a long while). Thereafter, it takes another century to get the formula appearing in the AppleWorks document when selecting the command "Edit : Paste".
Everything worked still fine under Leopard; under Snow Leopard it's a desaster.
    p.s.
I've produced thousands of work sheets for my Maths teachings using the Drawing module of AppleWorks in combination with MathType (Design Science). Now I'm stuck since there is no decent successor of AppleWorks available:
    * iWork doesn't feature a drawing module.
    * EazyDraw doesn't collaborate with MathType (i.e. no OLE; inserted formulae cannot be edited by double-clicking).
    * OpenOffice doesn't collaborate with MathType.
    * Micro$oft Office doesn't feature a drawing module.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't use AppleWorks as much as I used to & I've never had a need to use MathType, but I just tried dragging 3 images - a .png, a .tiff & a .jpg - to a new AppleWorks draw document. I had no problems resizing them using Format > Scale by percent & I had no problems using any of the other dialog boxes you mention.
Some basic troubleshooting you might try:
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them. You should do this step anytime AppleWorks crashes or you force quit it.
The slowness is likely the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.
Could you send me a copy of one of these worksheets? Perhaps I can see if I can easily duplicate one in Pages/Numbers/Keynote. Even though iWork doesn't have a draw app, all of the apps do have basic drawing capabilities.

  • Opening AppleWorks Drawing docs in Pages

One of the frustrations some Pages users have expressed is not being able to open AppleWorks drawing docs. I've discovered a way to open AppleWorks drawings in Pages and keep the drawings editable. (The document has to be from a recent enough version of AppleWorks, 6.2.4 or 6.2.9.) It is basically just a matter of copying and pasting the drawing objects into an AW word processing document in the proper way, saving, then opening the doc in Pages.
To do this use the following procedure: Open the drawing document in AppleWorks, use "Select all" and then copy the selection. Now open a new Word Processor document in AppleWorks. If you don't have the tools palette visible, select Show Tools from the Window menu. Now click on the arrow pointer toward the top of the tool palette. (This deactivates the insert text cursor from the WP doc you just created. If you don't do this step your drawing objects will be pasted as a single uneditable graphic.)
Now do the Paste command and everything from your Drawing document is pasted into the WP doc, but still as a collection of individual drawing objects. Now save this document with whatever name you want. Then open the resulting document in Pages. It WILL open and all the drawing objects are still editable. I even found that you can still ungroup objects that were grouped in AW.
I doubt this is a perfect solution, but I was pleasantly surprised to see it work as well as it did in my limited testing.

Unfortunately, this is the only way to get those AppleWorks draw documents into Pages. I believe I described much the same process three years ago when Pages 1/iWork '05 was released. Back then, I don't think text boxes remained editable, but they do in Pages 2 & 3. Links between text boxes may be lost, but they are easily recreated in Pages.
I think that page layout mode in Pages 3 is very similar to AppleWorks draw & am surprised that this function doesn't exist. It's something I've left feedback for the Pages team about more than once.

  • Appleworks to iWork

    Hi
I recently purchased a new MacBook and am currently using the free trial of iWork. I have plenty of info backed up on a disc from my old computers. I have just recently tried to access my old documents but some of them open in text edit and are all garbled. My question is...what can I do to be able to use these documents? By the way the ones not opening correctly are made using the drawing part of Appleworks.
    Thanks

If you select all in a Draw document and copy, and then paste into a Pages Layout document the contents of the original will come over grouped and can't be ungrouped.
It is possible to workaround this by the following process:
    1. Open the Draw document. Go to the Format menu and select Document: note the margin settings.
    2. Open a new Word Processing document. From the same menu item set the margins to be the same, having if necessary changed the orientation to Landscape in Page Setup.
    3. Go to the Draw document. Select all (command-A) then command-G to group. Copy.
    4. Go to the Word Processing document and click on the draw tool in the toolbar (the arrow): drag the mouse within the document to enter draw mode. Paste. You may need to drag the drawing to the correct position. Hit shift-command-G to ungroup. Save.
    5. Save this document. Drag it onto the Pages icon in the dock. Your drawing will now be opened in Pages and can be saved in it. You will be able to select individual objects and edit them. However I have found that if when you saved the Word Processing document in step 4 there are still some grouped objects, they will be grouped in Pages but attempting to ungroup them will hang Pages: I don't know whether this is a consistent problem, but it's advisable to check for grouped objects and ungroup them in step 4.
This process works well on the whole, though extremely complex documents (such as the one on the right, which runs to four pages) may finish up with a few items out of place, meaning you will have to look closely at it and check that everything is where it should be.
For complicated documents Yvan has a script (which he mentioned above) which makes the copy automatically and then checks each individual object to make sure that it is in the correct place: he will doubtless tell you how to find it in due course.
AW Draw documents can by opened directly by a program called EazyDraw. If you are dealing with complex technical drawings it's probably the best choice: it's about the same cost as the whole of iWork (when downloaded, and rather more expensive on a CD), but cheaper than some other vector based programs, and seems to handle the whole process well - though it does operate somewhat differently from AppleWorks. (I've not been able to test it with very complex documents since the trial version limits the number of allowed objects.)

  • Can't import Appleworks files into iWork

I recently purchased iWork 05 (and am stuck with it, since I cannot upgrade to 06) and cannot import Appleworks 6 drawing documents into either Pages or Keynote. Are the Appleworks drawing and paint functions now orphaned?

Only AppleWorks 6 word processing documents can be opened by Pages (& I assume, by Keynote). You can do one of two things to get the content of your AppleWorks draw documents into Pages.
    1. Open the draw document in AppleWorks & copy & paste into Pages.
2 Copy the draw elements & paste them as floating objects in an AppleWorks 6 word processing document. Inline object don't translate in my experience. And, text boxes will become uneditable objects.

  • Opening AppleWorks 5.3 documents

My decrepit Windows 98 finally went to computer heaven. I've fallen in love with the drawing part of AppleWorks and installed that on my Windows XP replacement (a laptop). Works fine, except...
I used to be able to double-click a file and it would open both AppleWorks and the document at the same time. Now, I get a window saying "file not found" but I can open the document from the file menu in Appleworks. The help menu wasn't much help as the "tip" didn't work.
Is this a problem of an old program (version 5.3) that Windows XP isn't able to handle? Is there any way to force it to do what I want, ie. open both AppleWorks and the document by double-clicking?
I suppose I can learn to live with it, but would really rather get this to function in the way I'm already used to.
Or am I gonna have to upgrade?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I used AppleWorks 5.0.3 on Windows XP Pro at work for several years, but I always opened AppleWorks first then the files I needed. I think because I got the same kind of error. You could try "telling" Windows to associate those files with AppleWorks. That worked for me back in Win 95. I try not to know too much about the workings of Windows, especially now that I don't need to use it at work.

  • Apple Has Dropped The Appleworks!

    Hi,
MacWorld recently noted that for all intents and purposes Apple is no longer really supporting Appleworks. Having just switched over to Mac this is not good news for me. I have been converting files created in Windows to Appleworks and it's not really all that much fun. And now I hear that all that work may well have been in vain!
More and more and more I am thinking of renaming my PinCushion Steve instead of Bill......
All this said, what are Mac folks switching to for word processing, spreadsheets, and Databases? I am particularly looking for a new database application that doesn't require a PhD to operate.
    Thanks!

This is really old news & has been brought up here many, many times. At the Macworld San Francisco keynote in January,2005, Steve Jobs announced iWork '05 as "building the successor to AppleWorks." You can read more in the iWork ’05 press release from the same date.
Beginning with the release of the Intel iMacs this January, AppleWorks is no longer bundles with the "consumer" Macs. It is still available for sale through Apple Stores & other retailers.
AppleWorks 6 will run & run well through Rosetta on an Intel Mac. Those who have used AppleWorks 6 on Intel Macs find it runs as well, in some cases better, as on a G5 Mac. The editors of the AppleWorks User Group Journal did extensive testing on side-by-side G5 & Intel iMacs. You can download a PDF copy of their results at http://www.awug.org/.
Unless you need the spreadsheet, database & draw capabilities of AppleWorks, take a look at iWork '06. A trial of iWork '06 is included on all new Macs. Pages, the word processor/page layout program in iWork, is a Universal Binary & runs natively on Intel Macs. I have moved to Pages for almost all of my word processing. Even though iWork '06 has some spreadsheet function in tables, my spreadsheets are already in AppleWorks & most are probably too complex for iWork. And I use AppleWorks' flat-file database a lot.

  • How do I upload Appleworks drawings to Photobucket.  What save extension?

I have Mac OS X 10.2.8. I have used draw (not paint) in Appleworks, and have saved them to my documents file and to my archive HP file. I want to upload them to Photobucket.com so I can link them to a forum board. No matter what extension I give these drawings, Photobucket cannot upload them. I have no trouble uploading photos in Photobucket. The error message will say no image, and then a screen flashes on and off way too fast for me to read saying that the following extensions must be used, but I can't read what it says. I have tried all manner of extensions and combinations of extensions. I have searched the help boards for hours to no avail. The drawing "manual" in Appleworks has nothing about saving and what extensions to use that I can see anyway. I have downloaded Photobucket's Flock application for Mac users. That doesn't work either although I might not have done that correctly HELP! Thanks!

    Hello
When you open your AppleWorks 6 draw document and choose memu File > Save As…, a 'Save' dialogue will be open. In that dialogue, there should be 'File Format' drop-down menu. Now do you see file format options such as JPEG [QT], PNG [QT] and TIFF {QT] in the drop-down list?
If you do, choose e.g. JPEG [QT] and set the end of file name to ".jpg". This will do.
However, if you don't see those file format options, something is wrong with your AppleWorks 6 or OSX System. If such is the case, the first thing you should try is to reset relevant AppleWorks 6 preferences.
    The protocol is -
    (1) Quit AppleWorks 6 application
    (2) Delete the following. (~ means your home directory)
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appleworks.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/AppleWorks/AppleWorks 6 Preferences
    ~/Library/Preferences/AppleWorks/AppleWorks 6 Translators Cache
(You may delete the rest in ~/Library/Preferences/AppleWorks/ as well)
    (3) Empty trash.
    (4) Launch AppleWorks 6 application
    (5) Redo some settings, e.g. via menu Edit > Preferences.
    cf.
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=607287
If this does not fix the drop-down menu in 'Save As' dialogue, then you should try normal OSX maintenance routines, such as Repair Permissions etc. Or to create a new user account and see if things work well in new user account could be a good way to narrow down the problem cause.
If even they fail to fix the drop-down menu, I think you should re-install QuickTime. For some reasons, QuickTime is responsible for these image file format conversions in AppleWorks 6.
(I don't use OSX for myself and don't know how to selectively re-install QuickTime only, though. Anyway once QuickTime is re-installed, I think you'd better reset AppleWorks 6 preferences again by the said protocol.)
Lastly, you can find some relevant help documents in the following paths. (Note JFIF means JPEG JFIF and it is the same thing as JPEG, generally.)
    AppleWorks 6 Help

  • Appleworks on Snow Leopard Dialog boxes

Several of the Appleworks dialog boxes don't appear to work when I transferred it over from a 10.5 system to a new powerbook pro. The dialog boxes don't show any content, and I can't type any content or check the checkboxes. I've noticed this with the Font/Size/Other and spreadsheet Options/Display dialogs, but it may be elsewhere too.
    Russ Bjork

If you used the Setup or Migration Assistant to do the move it would have also moved the preferences from your user Library. The same suggestions for any update also apply to migrating. Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder then click on Repair Permissions.
Still, as OS X is updated/upgraded there is more & more "flakiness" & glitches with AppleWorks. I would not be at all surprised that the next major (10.7) upgrade will render AppleWorks unusable.

  • New User/How to draw freehand?

Hello, just got a new iMac and am new to iWork and would like to know how to create drawing documents like Appleworks could without templates, just using a blank page and the toolbar or something similar.

Whilst the Pages Draw tool at the bottom of the Shapes menu on the Toolbar provides some drawing ability, that is not saying much. It is probably one of the worst drawing tools I have ever encountered.
You will be far better off using a 3rd party application:

  • Appleworks 6.2.4 Printing Resolution & Colors

The Appleworks 6.2.4 program that I installed on my MacBook from an old eMac apps disk no longer allows me to choose the printing resolution or color vs. B&W as it for the first few months of use on the MacBook. It has never allowed me to choose color intensity and related functions as it did on the eMac. The menu from which I could once choose the printing resolution has changed to read: Layout, Paper Handling, Cover Page, Scheduler, Supply Levels, and Summary. None of those allows a resolution change option. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but even that did not refresh those functions. How can I restore them for use with my MacBook? Also, should I upgrade to version 6.2.9, and if so, how do I do it?

Have you changed printers recently, or installed/updated your printer drivers?
These menu items are in the menu in the Print Dialogue, and depend on the options offered by the printer and its driver, not on AppleWorks.
Mine, when printing from AppleWorks 6.2.9 to a Canon Pixma series ink jet under OS X v10.4.9, shows:
    Copies & Pages
    Layout
    Scheduler
    Paper Handling
    ColorSync
    Cover Page
    Quality & Media
    Color Options
    Special Effects
    Borderless Printing
    Margin
    AppleWorks
    Summary
For a Paint or Drawing document, the AppleWorks item (which shows printing options specific to the application) offers All/Left/Right pages as its only option.
The only resolution change option available within AppleWorks, to my knowledge is Resolution & Depth... in the Format menu. That menu item is available only in a Paint docment or in a Paint frame within other types of document.
Reinstalling your printer drivers may help.
Regarding updating to AW 6.2.9: The update adds scroll wheel compatibility and fixes some bugs. The only downside I'm aware of is the loss of ability to open some AppleWorks/ClarisWorks files created using earlier versions of the application (eg. ClarisWorks 4). Before updating, you might want to save a copy of your current AppleWorks 6 folder to an external drive to keep for opening those earlier files affected by this problem.
You'll find the AppleWorks 6.2.9 updates on this page. Note that there are two English Language versions. The US/North American English updater is the one in the box at the top right, identified only by its file size (15.8 MB). The International English version is at the top of the main list on the left.
