Drawing help: paths and fills

Hi there, i'm looking for help with this. When I draw a path with the pen tool, and fill it, it seems as if the shape now has two parts. If i drag the filled area around, it's breaking apart from the path (or border). this is kind of annoying for me, so how can i make this one entity?

thank you. i still find this behaviour a little cumbersome though. for example, on a rectangle shape it's a few clicks to select all the areas of the border, and the fill.

Draw a path and straighten layer beneath?

I'm sure this has been asked before but is there a quick fix to this.
I have a panoramic where the horizon is a little wobbly. I can then draw a path along this path. Can I then straighten this line out?

You could do this with Puppet Warp. It's far from automatic, but I'd call that horizon more than "a little wobbly", so it will take a lot of time and patience to get it right.

4. At the bottom of the ‘tool menu’, you should see 3 small circles with a square? Choose ‘Draw inside’ select box/shape you want to spray into, then use ’symbol sprayer’.

Stroking and filling doesn't work in paths expanded from Live Trace

I’m using Adobe Illustrator CS4. I’m a complete beginner, though I’ve done a bit of reading about the basics.
After tracing a bitmap image (of black letters on a transparent background, in pdf format) using Live Trace, expanding it, and editing the paths with the pen tool to my satisfaction, I find neither fills nor strokes appear -- I can change the fill settings or stroke settings, but the paths just stay the colour of all unfilled paths on that layer. (I’m viewing the document in preview mode.) Also, when selecting paths with either the Selection tool or the Direct Selection tool and then trying to use Live Paint, I get a notification that "the selection contains objects that cannot be converted. Live Paint groups can only contain paths and compound paths. Clipping paths are not allowed." When I go to the Object Menu, under Clipping Mask the only available option is "Make Mask", and "Release" and "Edit Mask" are greyed out, which suggests to me there are no clipping masks present.
I’ve created a separate, nearly identical document where strokes, fills and Live Paint work fine. The only difference is that when I used Live Trace on the bitmap image, for the non-working document I selected "Outlines" for the Vector section of the View options (in the Tracing Options dialogue box), and in the working one I selected "Tracing Result" instead. For both, I used the same original document settings, placed the same bitmap image, used the Live Trace preset "Black and White Logo" with all the default settings except that I checked the "Ignore White" box, and then clicked Expand.
Obviously, I know what I did wrong, though I don’t know why it made a difference. But since I spent many hours editing the paths in the screwed-up document before I realized stroking and filling wouldn’t show up, is there a way to fix it? How can I make the paths "valid" for stroking, filling, and Live Paint -- or, failing that, is there a way to somehow copy or automatically trace the shape of the paths, so I don’t have to do all that editing again?
This is kind of urgent, since I’m creating a logo for a project that needs to be finished soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I could send someone the document by e-mail if you wanted to look at it properly -- since I’m a beginner, I don’t know what I need to describe.

Never mind! I fixed it. For anyone else who has this same problem -- apparently, I’d made it so the paths were actually guides, which can look like and possess the properties of paths but which don’t show when you print. After going to View, Guides, Release Guides, the fills and strokes manifested, and the paths became "valid".

Compound path and live fill problem

I really hope you can help me out with this one. I'm all new to Illustrator and have tried to find the answer to my question but without luck, so you are my last way out
I'm currently working on a logo of a football which I have drawn with the line segment tool. A football is made of pentagons and hexagons, and I want all the pentagons to have a color fill. For that I have used the live paint bucket. But if I apply an effect such as a gradient it is applied to each segment as many seperates. I then read that you could use compound path and that works with my lines but not with the live fill. Is there a work around for my problem or do you have any smart suggestions of what I could do ?

What AI version?
By "Live Fill" are you refering to "Live Paint"?
CS 6 lets you fill a stroke with a gradient. That may be what you used here.
Congratulations learning about "compound paths" on you own. That's a step in the right direction.
You can control a gradient fill across multiple objects by using the "Gradient Annotator" (under "View" or "G"). This allows you to set a gradient start and end point by dragging across your selected artwork. You can also edit the gradient sliders directly on the annotator.
If you ARE using "Live Paint", you can use the "Live Paint Selection Tool" (hidden under the Live Paint Bucket tool, or "Shift-L"), to select multiple Live Paint segments, then drag the annotator across all segments. The annotator is hidden when used with Live Paint (at least in AICS5).
I hope these tips are helpful.

Reset Default Stroke and Fill on Path Tools

DUH! I've only done this task a million times before, and now I’m flummoxed. About the third weird thing in as many weeks . . .
Here's what is what: a file I've used before with no problems, suddenly will not let me reset the default settings of no fill and 1 pt black stroke on the path tools. I know how to do it - make sure nothing is selected and then reset the default. Easy peasy.
After I reset, it shows the default settings everywhere (tools panel, control panel, swatches panel) then after drawing the path, the object has no fill and no stroke. I've reset many times and finally understand the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and getting the same result!
I've also tried creating a local defaul with a Cyan fill and a Red stroke, and everything looks good to go, until I draw the rectangle. Then it's no fill and no stroke again.
I'm almost embarrassed asking this question, but now I’d like to know if there is an answer. Is it possible the file is corrupted? If so, is there anything one can do to save the file? I tried doing a Save As and converting it to CS6 but that didn’t work. I’ve rebuilt the Preferences (again).

I went in and found the Basics Graphic Frame was messed up, so I Redefined the Style and now everything is working.

This is with regard to creating a compound path:
I have set some white type on a circle and then created outlines. I then placed the outlined type on a black stroked ring which I then selected "outlined stroke." I then put both "outlined" graphical elements on a separate solid bkg. (all 3 are on the same layer). Lastly, I then selected the top two elements and went to "make" a "compound path" (because I want the type to be the "holes" so I can see through to the background). However, the only effect I get is the white outlined type turning black (the same color as the black ring). What am i doing wrong? I can achieve the desired result with simple boxes but it won't work with a circular type path, a stroked ring and a solid bkg.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, I tried your suggestion with no success. BTW, minus front is now Subtract. Apparently, by clicking option>subtract, it works in the same way as minus front. I tried this to no avail.
Let me reiterate please.
I have 3 graphic elements-all on the same layer:
1. Background: Gold circle with a fill and no stroke.
2. Middle: Black ring (Stroked) inside gold background circle.
3. Top: White copy set on a circular type path and placed directly on top of middle black ring.
Both the middle black ring and top type path HAVE BEEN CONVERTED TO OUTLINES.
LASTLY, I select the Middle and Top, go to Compound Paths and choose "Make" and my white copy turns to black. Wrong!
WHAT I WANT TO HAPPEN: I want the white copy to become HOLES, so the GOLD background shows through.
Any solutions would be very much appreciated!

I made a path and saved it and when I try to select it, it turns my stage completely black? Can anyone help me?

As my question says, I am cropping out a figure exactly how I usually do it and for some reason this time it is not working. I made points with the pen tool and then moved it around with the direct selection tool (light grey pointer) and everything worked fine. I then saved the path and usually you just hold down control and click on the picture of the path next to the name and it selects it for you (marching ants) and then I select the inverse and delete the background. This time for some reason when I control and click on the image of the path, it just turns the stage completely black. When I undo it goes back to normal but everytime I try, the same thing happens. I am using Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64-Bit) By the way

Can you show some screen captures. Ctrl+Click on a Path in the path palette should make a section from the combined path. Have your tried resetting you Photoshop preferences.

I can't draw straight lines for fill-in-the-blank on my tests and worksheets. The "draw it yourself choice makes big fat lines and takes a lot of manipulation. Do I have to draw them myself with a pen and a ruler?

I can't draw straight lines for fill-in-the-blank on tests and worksheets. The draw-it-yourself ooption gives me thick lines and is time-consuming. So, after all these years, do I have to go back to using a ruler and a pen?

In Pages v5.0.1, the straight lines are already drawn for you in the Shape Tool. Before we go there, select Menu > View > Show Ruler.
When you click on Shape in the Pages toolbar, the top left line is straight. Click it. It will drop into your document in a 45 degree angle. Grab the lower left selection grip and drag it up and to the right to position the horizontal line in the length of your choice. Use the Format: Style tab to manage the stroke weight. You can also choose Menu > Edit > Duplicate Selection (command+D) as a productivity tool.
If you move from the Format: Style tab to the Arrange tab, you can compare the start and end points with where you want the line positioned on the ruler. Once you have it positioned, notice the Lock button, also on the Format: Arrange tab.

Need help with links and fill color

Hi all, I just recently discovered liveCycle and am very impressed with it! I have been trying to make myself a homework calendar for a while now, and I have it done mostly, but there are a few more things I'd like to add that I don't know how to do.
I have some HTML and Java experience, but very little XML or JavaScript experience. I have a feeling that what I am trying to do is relatively simple, but I just can't figure it out! I have spent hours pouring over Google and the help files, and I feel like I have gotten close, but no joy yet.
I have attached my calendar so far (truncated to fit 5MB max attachment size). I'd like it to do two more things:
1. Have the background color of the table cells change from white to green when the check box is checked.
(Alternately, I'd really like to get rid of the check boxes all thogether and just have the background of the table cells turn green with a keyboard shortcut, like "ctrl + D" for 'done'. But if that isn't possible, then the color change with the check box is fine.)
2. I'd like the button called 'WORD DOC' in the upper right of the form to open a word document on my local computer. Where I just push that button and a work doc opens right up in Word in another window.
I was able to get .PDF documents to open up with those other two buttons there ('Big Java' and 'Beginning Java II') by adding the script
app.openDoc("Big Java.pdf");
and
app.openDoc("Beginning Java II.pdf");
to each of the buttons respectively, but those PDFs need to be in the same folder as the calendar for that to work. I tried just altering that script by replacing the name of the PDF file with the name of a Word doc file like this:
app.openDoc("test.docx");
but the button doesn’t work at all, it just does nothing.
So that’s what I am trying to do. I have spent hours messing around with anything I could think of to get this to work, but unfortunately I just don’t know the language well enough to get it to work.
I would really appreciate any advice on this at all. Thank you very much for your consideration.

Thanks very much for your response! I was able to use the code to make the box turn green by adding that script to the 'click' event of textbox and changing the language from FormCalc to JavaScript. So what happened was that when I clicked in the textbox, the color turned green.
I couln't firgure out how to add it to the checkbox though. When I tried, it didn't do anything. The problem now is that when I click in the textbox to add my homework, it turns green. I need it to turn green once I finish my homework.
This would work great if the texbox turned green when I SHIFT clicked the box. Is there anything I could add to that scipt to do that?

Setting path and class path help

I am a complete beginner who is currently starting a cd based tutorial!I have downloaded jdk1.1.6 which is the nearest developement kit to the one used in the tutorial.I use windows 98.When I try to set my path or class path as instructed in the docs, I cannot find any thing in the autoexec file at all.I have opened using notepad/Run and DOS edit but all three open an empty file.Where will I need to set up the path and class paths.My system must run these from somewhere else perhaps due to an update.

Put the following statements in your autoexec.bat.
<homepath> = Path of your JDK folder on the drive. e.g. c:\jdk
SET CLASSPATH=;.;<homepath>\lib\tools.jar; .... continue with other jar files on the same line and seperate the entries by a semicolon.
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS\;C:\<homepath>\BIN\;
This autoexec.bat must be on c:\. i.e. U can open it in notepad by giving c:\autoexec.bat in the File Open Dialog. It is possible for this file to be empty. Simply add the commands on the last line.

First let me apologize for posting a reply that was only suitable for advanced users. Photoshop is broad and powerful therefore has a huge learning curve. In fact I would state no one knows and uses all of Photoshop. When we first get Photoshop it intimidate us and we're very uncomfortable using it. Many thing are not intuitive there in much learning involved. After some time we begin to know something and we are able to do some thing. Learning become rapid and we start playing in Photoshop. It is very important to play with Photoshop. Playing with Photoshop and asking for help with in forums like this IMO is the best way to learn.
Photoshop Power lies in layers, selection and automation. However it takes knowledge to use photoshop well so most powerful tool you have ins Photoshop is the gray matter between your ears. Most at one time or another want to watermark or put a logo on their image. So its best to automate this process. All run into a problem in the process. "Size" We find our assets vary in size and aspect ratios. Landscape, Portraits, Panoramas and others. This complicates automation. Vector graphics works best when size vary greatly. If you can not work out how to create a vector solution like a custom shape. Create your Logo and watermark large thing scale down better the up. Text scale well for text uses vectors graphics however if you rasterize text it will not scale well.
I do not type or do English well so let me do some screen captures. I can not stress enough how important Black, White, Grays and Blending is when it come to image processing. Become friends with Multiply, Screen, Overlay and Luminosity blending.....
However when there is a white or black background though you can blend them you can not add a style like a drop shadow, emboss or make it invisible setting fill to 0 so only the style is visible. When there is contrast between the logo and background it is easy to separate the two. To select the background and delet it to have the logo with a transparent background. Many tools can be used to create the selection hee I use my action kill white.
Vector Shape would work better for scaling However it would be best to create the logo from scratch in a vector program like illustrator but I never had the resources to justify the Creative suite. I only had Photoshop. Recently Adobe gave me and other a year subscription to the creative suite for our participation here. I still have not installed anything but Photoshop, A while back I found a program that can create vector patf for black and white art work. It will not be as good as using something like illustrator. How do I thin a font in CS6? I tried a negative number in offset path and it didn't work.

I tried this with outlining the font and also without. The negative number in offset path doesn't thin, however if I do a preview and put in a positive number it does add onto the width of the font.

I am going to share with you the secret to using type with appearance. After setting type change the fill to none(characheter level), then add a fill(type level). This way you do nto have 2 fills fighting with each other.
Below I did not follow my advice to better explain what is happening, but I chose a different color fill. Even though I only have one fill, there is a black stroke coming from the character level.
To salvage your existing type, double click so you select all the type with the |-Beam, your appearance palette will now say characters, and delete that fill.
When you oultined your fonts, most likley the same thing happened, but a battle battle between the path and group level.

Suggestion: preview of Stroke and Fill commands

Instead of having to click OK to see the result then, if not happy, having to backtrack and try a variation any number of times, could we see the document updating as we change parameters in the dialogues of Stroke and Fill commands, please? This could be an option that the user can disable, of course.
Ps is the leading app of its kind but in some ways it seems to be clinging onto the early 1990s.

I confused myself earlier regarding the different stroke commands. Yesterday, I had been using "Edit > Stroke" and becoming frustrated with not seeing the result until after clicking OK, then having to repeat the process several times until the result looked good by trial and error. (Yes, I know that Layer Styles give a real-time preview when adjusting stroke, but in this particular case, Edit > Stroke was what I wanted to use.) Then I was working on another image and using "Stroke Path..." to apply a brush. The result wasn't quite right, so I had to backtrack, tweak the brush, apply again, and iterate the process numerous times.
I realise that a real-time preview of "Stroke Path..." would not help when the brush needs adjusted. It would be wonderful if the brush or other tool could be adjusted while the "Stroke Path..." dialogue is open, and have a real-time preview. So, my wish is best generalised to one of real-time preview of most manipulations that the user can make in most dialogues, and for all dialogues which do not absolutely need to be modal to be become non-modal. Changing brush controls while the "Stroke Path..." dialogue is open and seeing the displayed image updating in real time is just one special case of the general principle.
Our modern hardware easily supports such aids to creativity.

- Database View (SE11)
Database views are implement an inner join, that is, only records of the primary table (selected via the join operation) for which the corresponding records of the secondary tables also exist are fetched. Inconsistencies between primary and secondary table could, therefore, lead to a reduced selection set.
In database views, the join conditions can be formulated using equality relationships between any base fields. In the other types of view, they must be taken from existing foreign keys. That is, tables can only be collected in a maintenance or help view if they are linked to one another via foreign keys.

Help views are used to output additional information when the online help system is called.
When the F4 button is pressed for a screen field, a check is first made on whether a matchcode is defined for this field. If this is not the case, the help view is displayed in which the check table of the field is the primary table. Thus, for each table no more than one help view can be created, that is, a table can only be primary table in at most one help view.

Difference between "Help View" and "Search Help"
- Projection View

Maintenance views enable a business-oriented approach to looking at data, while at the same time, making it possible to maintain the data involved. Data from several tables can be summarized in a maintenance view and maintained collectively via this view. That is, the data is entered via the view and then distributed to the underlying tables by the system.
