Drawing "wires" in Illustrator CS4?

I have tried using Photoshop to tidy-up a scanned wiring diagram saved as a TIFF. The diagram consists of many (almost) vertical and horizontal lines (the wires) which I want to straighten and color. Some wires are two colors, so the lines need to be banded or striped in some way.
I have never used Illustrator, but in this thread it emerged that it was the better tool for the job (there are sample images there).
Any suggestions on how best to accomplish my task?

Look at the online help for the basics of:
Drawing paths and assigning strokes to them.
Appearance Palette's Add Stroke and Add Fill commands. Understand that youi can apply more than one stroke and/or fill to a single path.
Pattern Brushes.
Graphic Styles.
For wiring diagrams, use the ability to apply multiple strokes to a single path. Each stroke can have its own weight. For the diagonal stripes, use a PatternBrush, and make the PatternBrush one of the multiple strokes applied to a path. Store such combinations as Graphic Styles so they can be applied to other paths with one click.
The sample below shows a set of Pattern Brushes I use for wiring in isometric illustrations, but the principle is the same. The Brushes would work fine for flat schematics.  Wires like 2 and 5 would not require using Brushes; they could be done by simply applying two strokes to a path in the Appearnace palette. (They are Brushes in my sample, in order to include the terminal ends.)
Wire 4 is an example of using a Brush to create a stripe. The wire has two strokes, with a different Brush applied to each. The top stroke has the stripe Brush applied; the bottom stroke has the simple shaded Brush (with trimmed insulation ends) applied. Again, the bottom Brush would not be necessary if it were not for my intent to include the trimmed ends. In a schematic, that wire could be done with a set of three strokes: A thick stroke at the bottom to create the outer edge color; a middle stroke somewhat narrower to create the middle color; and a top stroke with the spiral stripe Brush applied.
...it emerged that it was the better tool for the job...
Yes. Please don't use Photoshop for wiring diagrams. Such diagrams need to be resolution-independent vector artwork. Think of your downstream users. Wiring schematics often become large and complex, requiring large sheets with relatively small text. A nice PDF containing vector artwork can be zoomed indefinitely to trace a circuit with legible text; and the file size is usually much smaller than if it were a large raster image. (Tech illustrators hate it when technical drawings like schematics default to a dumbed-down raster format. Just makes it a royal pain to work with and modify.)

  • Drawing wires / cables in Illustrator

Can someone explain to me the best way to draw wires? I think it would probably be to use a stroke and apply gradients/effects to it.
I need to draw loads of thin bendy wires that have shading, so that going down the middle of the wire it's lighter, and the sides fade into a darker colour to make the wire look less flat. Example: http://www.dansdata.com/images/io030/wire280.jpg
Are there also any brushes that can be used to do this? I've looked for downloadable brushes like this but surprisingly cant find anything for something so basic.

  • Illustrator CS4 crashes when Photoshop is open

Hi, I have a problem with Illustrator CS4. Whenever I have Photoshop CS4 open at the same time as it, the program crashes completely, giving no error message to indicate why.
It runs totally fine as long as Photoshop isn't already open, or as long as you don't open Photoshop while it is still running. This is a nightmare when I want to draw certain things in Illustrator and then copy them over to Photoshop.
Anyone else experienced this or have any idea how to fix it?
    My system specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU [email protected]
    3.5gb Ram
    XP service pack 3

Opened up task manager as suggested before opening the programs, and noticed there were more processes running than expected. I ran Spybot Search & Destroy which seems to have picked up a few things ad-aware hadn't, and following a reset, the problem now seems to have disappeared.
Hopefully this is what was causing the problem and it isn't just pure chance that it is working ok for now...
    Cheers for the suggestions

  • Edging problem "thin white line" between paths in Illustrator CS4...

I am making a map of Europe with Illustrator CS4 for a documentary about WWI and how the Versailles Treaty carved up imperial Germany. After having traced imperial Germany before Versailles, I then carve out the territories given to neighboring states. The problem is these very fine white lines that appear between paths.
I have two paths right next to each other. But for some reason I see this very thine white line gap that shows up between them and becomes much more evident when I export into Photoshop. Please notice this very fine white line in the black image. What you see in this image are in fact two paths side by side. There should be no line between them. And I have no idea why this very fine line appears but it gets much worse in Photoshop much more noticeable. Please click on image to see the line more clearly.
Thank you very much in advance for any help or suggestions.

    Dear Jacob and Peter,
Thank you both very much for your help.
Please see these photos showing my problem more clearly.
I am using Illustrator to draw the regions, Photoshop to consolidate the layers, and Apple Motion 4 to build my animation.
    [1] : Imperial Germany in 1914.
    [2] : Germany after Versailles.
In Illustrator CS4, the images [1] and [2] have the colored layers in "Multiply" transparency mode. It's how I want the layers to look when I import them into Apple Motion 4.
My idea was to color all the layers black in "Normal" mode and then apply "colorize" filters in Motion 4 and set the transparency to "multiply" in Motion.
Now with Imperial Germany (all layers colored in black with transparency set to "Normal"), when I bring the image into Photoshop, I suddenly get very fine white lines between the layers and these lines show up in Motion which is the big problem. Like I said, when you click on this last photo, and you see the image full size, you can clearly see the problematic lines which appear exactly where the layers touch each other. In the photo below, the territories ceded to Poland (West Prussia) and Lithuania (Memel) are not yet red. They are still black but you can see the lines.
I don't understand because in Illustrator there were no gaps whatsoever between the layers. In Illustrator CS4, I simply cut the "territorial losses" from imperial Germany using the "Trim" function in the Pathfinder Menu. I created the red and yellow layers from the original single "imperial Germany" layer. In Illustrator I can colorize all the layers black and still never see any gaps. The fine white lines, appear in Photoshop and in Motion.
(NOTE: The documentary is being in edited in Final Cut Studio which is why I use Motion for animating.)
Sorry to ramble on. Thank you again for any further help you can give me.

  • Illustrator cs4 and photoshop cs4 animation files

In ps cs4  using the animation tools you can draw over an image frame then save out the frames of the drawings. I would like to know if in illlustrator cs4 if you can open the movie files (they could be avi etc) in illustrator cs4 and save the line drawing on each frame as a vector file?
    TIA
    John

    OK
To explain the project maybe you can help.
I shoot some live footage with video camera HD 720p - this footage is to be rotoscoped of the action of the character.
The HD 720p is not 2k res so their ratio is not correct for 2k so I was thinking the line drawings (rotoscoped)  bring them into illustratorcs4 and convert the line drawings into vector files so they can be brought into the 2k file size and scaled to ratio that works with the 2k files
Once these line drawing vectors are on the correct frames in the movie 2k file - framesave them out and paint in pscs4extended and paint the layer and save back out into a movie file (avi, etc)
Your thoughts about doing this would be appreciated and which software to use

  • How to create unique shapes in Illustrator CS4

    First off....
I am new to the Adobe suite of applications and also new to owning a Macbook Pro. I have been using a design program for Windows for many years.
I would like to master the creation and manipulation of shapes using Illustrator CS4.
As one example, how would I create the following:
I want to end up with a shape that is similar to one-quarter of a full moon.
Using my Windows program (not an Adobe product), I would create a line using a line tool, and then I would be able to convert that line to a curve using a shape tool, which would enable me to drag from the midpoint of the line and have it become an arc. Then, while still using the shape tool, I could click once to select one of the endpoint nodes to then click on an "auto-close" option which would add a straight-line edge to close the shape for outline and fill purposes (so one side of the shape is straight at this point and the other side is curved). Using the shape tool, I would double-click near the midpoint of the straight edge to add a new node to the shape, and then I would use the "convert to curve" option from within the shape tool to be able to drag this straight side towards the curved side to end up with the quarter-moon shape as desired.
How would I make this sort of shape using Illustrator, and as a general question for learning, how can I learn all about how to put lines in the design space for purposes of joining these lines, curving any part of one or more lines and then filling or outlining the finished shape made from joined lines?

    > and as a general question for learning, how can I learn all about how to put lines in the design space for purposes of joining these lines, curving any part of one or more lines and then filling or outlining the finished shape made from joined lines?
Well, you can read the documentation. That will be much more thorough and methodical than asking a random series of "how do I..." questions in a user forum. And it will take you
    a lot less time.
    > Using my Windows program (not an Adobe product)
You can say the name. If there's actually anyone here who doesn't know other drawing programs exist, well, they
need to. Your description sounds like Xara Xtreme.
    > I want to end up with a shape that is similar to one-quarter of a full moon..create a line...convert that line to a curve...drag from the midpoint of the line and have it become an arc...select one of the endpoint nodes... "auto-close"...double-click near the midpoint of the straight edge to add a new node..."convert to curve"...drag...
A similar procedure could be used in just about any vector drawing program that draws cubic Bezier curves. A much quicker procedure could also be used in just about any program, by leveraging the geometric shape tools and path combination commands that are just as ubiquitous:
    1. Draw a circle.
    2. Duplicate the circle.
    3. Overlap the circles partially.
    4. Use one circle to "punch" the other, leaving the difference (the crescent shape).
Here are two AI-specific differences I note in your description:
Illustrator can't bend a straght segment by dragging its middle if the straight segment has both its associated curve handles retracted. Dragging such a segment in AI just moves the segment (and its associated anchorPoints).
Illustrator displays fills on open paths. There is no option to turn off that often unwanted behavior.
Again, read the manual (the online Help files). It will take you decades to learn the program by asking random questions on the basic use of the tools, location of commands, organization (well, disorganization) scheme of the program, etc., etc.

    Hi,
I also had this problem on a Mac and I found the following solution.
    1. I draw my cursor with Resorcerer.
    2. In Resorcerer, I select my CURS resource then I click the Hex button. In the window, I select and copy the column named Hex Data.
    3. I past the result in TextEdit.
    4. I launch a little application I did with AppleScript to convert the text in the good format to b used with XCode and Illustrator CS4
Here is my little application to convert a text in TextEdit to the gool format.
    Maybe, this will be useful…
If there is a better solution, I am intersted.

  • Single Path Selection Lag Illustrator CS4

Running OSX on a MacBook Pro
    Illustrator CS4 up to date
    4gb Ram
No significant performance issues anywhere else.
Does this happen to anyone else?
Draw a path.  Deselect the path.  Use a single click to select the path with the selection tool.
For me Illustrator hangs for about 5 seconds, bring up the spinning ball before I can continue working.
If I marquee select the path, the program does not hang.  I have an illustration with thousands of paths, I can marquee select the whole thing and move it immediately with no lag, but if I make a single click selection on any path, the program lags.
Do other people have this problem or is this an isolated case.
    Thanks for your help.
    Kyler

Thanks for the fast reply! I experienced the same phenomena. The problem turned up in Leopard 10.5.8 and dissapeared with SL (10.6.1). However, ot of the blue it started again. Any idea where to look?
    Thnaks again!
Edit: After reinstalling my whole system step by step I found the culprit: a little application called 'RightZoom' which modifies the zoom button of the active window. Excluding Illustrator in the settings of RightZoom cured this problem!! Finally!

  • Blog post about Crop Marks Filter in Illustrator CS4

Sometime back a blog article was posted on Adobe Illustrator Blogs at http://blogs.adobe.com/infiniteresolution/ which talks about how Illustrator CS4 users who wanted/asked for the pre-Illustrator CS4 Crop Marks Filter could get it back.
Mac users can go directly to this link to get the Crop Marks Filter plug-in : http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4617

It does do that but it should not show the bleeds as a part of the document it should the document size should be differentiated from the bleed and crop and printer marks area.
You should be able to turn them off for better review purpose with clients and the thing that Acrobat does automatically is to fit the document to the paper size. This I think is a mistake as the ordinary user might not understand what is happening.
If you want to print the document at a 100% it has to go on a paper and to a print that prints documents of a larger size.
It should be clearer as we have reach a point in time where there are most users who have no old world experience with the printing press and plate making so many will not get this true once pointed out it will appear to them as a no brainer.
Also with Acrobat becoming a presentation and conferencing tool for client review in a very live way the ability to turn the bleeds and marks off with a click is very necessary especially hen you have a dead head executive on the other end saying that they never approved that design feature. You can then just click hide the crops or pint out that those marks are outside the documents page size and won't print.
No matter how much sense it makes to you and me because we are very experience with this there will always be people outside our profession that will have a hard time with this and many within our profession as well.
I was aware this was finally included in CS4 but I think it can be improved admittedly you can send a copy of the pdf without bleeds and marks. But you have no control over what they might do on the other side and i have seen some pretty stupid things.
In th old days you know the account exec would come into the art dept and pick the comp off of your drawing table and take his finger and run it over the art and ask is this wet?
I guess I don't have to tell anyone the answer to that question.

  • Illustrator cs4

I teach a graphic arts class grades 9-12. We are currently implementing Illustrator CS4 into our curriculum. I am (with limited success) learning it on the fly. We are using the Adobe Illustrator Classroom In A Book. I am finding that the students need to reset the default settings often in order to stay in sync with the book.Should you have to do this with each start up? Thre has also been cases that it is needed more than once during class time. Please, any info will be appreciated !  Thanks..........

    Jacob B.
Thanks for the quick response. Is there anything that can be done to solve this issue ?
One more question : there are a couple of  steps in one of the lessons (Lesson 3 Illy Classroom In A Book) that some of the students have encountered the same incorrect results.
    1. One step is outlining a stroke , after following the steps explained in the lesson they are unable to get the outline function to work.
    2. Another step is creating a star, again after following the steps we get a result that looks more like an asterisk than a star.
    3. One more........When using the erasor tool we actually end up drawing instead of erasing??
I apologize. These may seem simple but they are making my life miserable at this point.
    Thanks again...........

Impossible to tell without actualyl knowing what your settings are. I stil lthink that this issue could be related to your color management or you inadvertently attaching soemthing odd to your graphics because you may have accidentally defined something as the default appearance and it now messes up the simplest object you draw... Perhaps you can provide soem screenshots....

  • Snap to Grid problem in Illustrator CS4

I found a weird problem with the "snap to grid" feature in Illustrator CS4 running on MAC OS X Snow Leopard.
To reproduce it, on my system, it is enough to:
    1. Make sure to have the Snap To Grid enabled (View->Snap to grid)
    2. Draw a rectangle (see BEGIN.JPG)
    3. Select the Direct Selection Tool
    4. Try to increase the width of the rectangle, by dragging one side of the shape (not a single point, but the whole side in a move).
    5. On my system, I see that Illustrator behaves in a wrong way; it is like Illustrator is snapping to a not aligned grid, and the rectangle begins to be distorted (see END.JPG).
If I try to move a on point at a time, instead of moving one complete side, everything seems to works fine.

Win Vista 64-bit AI CS4.  Can't seem to reproduce your issue.  I drag on the right side of a rectangle with grid snap on and show grid and it snaps exactly to the grid, not anywhere in between even if I start with a rectangle that was created "not-on-grid".  When it snaps it snaps to distances equal to the grid spacing, though it won't snap to the grid itself.  It's as if it snaps to its own internal grid.  I guess that's a problem in and of itself since once you have grid snapping turned on no matter where the original rectangle was you would like it to snap to the grid lines.
EDIT:  Now I see how you created the problem--with direct selection (white arrow) as opposed to full selection with bounding box (black arrow).  Black arrow selection snaps to its internal grid while white arrow snaps to rhombus-like snapping.  I guess it's designed to be used with individual points and not with edges.  (AI doesn't have edge-snapping).

  • Macbook Air 11" i7 corrupt files problem with Adobe Illustrator CS4

    Hi
this problem may not be entirely related but maybe someone could help anyways or knows how I can proceed...
I'm running Illustrator CS4 on a Macbook Air 11" (latest 2011 model, with i7, 4GB, 128SSD), and lately some files are getting corrupted. specifically, adobe illusrator CS4 files with weeks of work. interestingly, the time machine backups are also getting corrupted.
its like I'm working on a file for a few days, backing up with time machine as well
closes the file, after a few days returns to it… (normal behavior)
then when i try to get back to the file then sometimes it says "Cant open the illustration, could not complete the operation" and opens a blank canvas.
restoring the file via time machine also gives the same error (its like all versions get corrupted simultaneously), even 4-5 versions backwards, even though they worked before when the file worked
it happened quite a few times, ruining weeks of work.
    I tried the following:
    reinstalling CS4 - didn't work
Opening the files on CS5 - still don't open
doing the file recovery thing and then opening it in a notepad - didn't work at all
using Time machine - the files are still corrupt
it only happenes with AI files, not photoshop files, for example.
I thought maybe it has anything to do with SSD? since my previous macbook pro (15", 2007) never did these errors…
    please help
    Eido

If at all, this would be I/O performance and bandwidth issues with Time Machine, but I don't think that's the problem. More to the point I think that it's a case of Preview opening the files to genereate thumbnails and icons and something going wrong there. I'd look up some guides on how to edit the relevant plist and conf files to exclude your AIs or turn off the behavior to generate these previews globally. This may help hugely...
