DreamSpark Standard/Premium CAL licensing question

Hi to all,
Sorry in advance for not technical question, but I was redirected here from DreamSpark Support which wasn't able to answer my question. Since there is no forum which suits my problem best, I decided to post here.
I'm administrator of IT Academy within which we are allowed to use DreamSpark Standard and/or Premium subscription. My question is - do I need any additional CALs for Windows Server ,Windows 7, SQL Server or any other software used for only LAB purposes?
For example if I installed Windows 7 on PCs in LAB and sql server on central server for students to learn T-SQL - do I need any CALs or are they included in DreamSpark Premium/Standard subscrption. If yes, should I download/install these CALs in any special
way or can I just use all the software without considering any CAL issues?
Thank you for any reply,
Regards,
Pawel Damian

Pawel, do you still need to know this?

  • Can I upgrade from DreamSpark to an open License Version of WS 2012 R2 Standard without a fresh install?

Hi. I have a working copy of a WS2012R2 which came from a DreamSpark channel. My Needs have changed and I have purchased on Open License of the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard. Is there a way to use the product Key to "change" the channel of
the already installed software without doing a fresh install? Do I have to (or Should I) scrap the DreamSpark version and reinstall everything?  The functionality that is missing for me in DreamSpark is Remote Desktop Services for which I have Open Licenses
which obviously are non functional under DreamSpark software. Called MS Open Licensing toll free and they require a $300 incident fee to answer this question. I neither have an issue un-installing the software nor installing a fresh version. I just have a
    Licensing question. Thanks Sam

Sounds like you called a support line, not a licensing line.  I've never heard of Microsoft asking a fee to answer a question about licensing.
Never played with Dreamspark media, but this is how it is done for other media that can activated with a different key.
    From an elevated command prompt:
    slmgr /ckms
    slmgr /upk
    slmgr /ipk <PRODUCT KEY>
    slmgr /ato

  • 1. Will CAL Licenses works if i use Windows Server 2012? 2. What GB of RAM can be used with Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition?

I have been using Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition for my business purpose and there are at-least 30 Users who logged in into the server Via Remotely from different location. I want to upgrade my server with latest one with some extra cores and RAM for
better and smooth operations for all users. So, i have a doubt whether my CAL Licenses will works with Windows Server 2012 or i need to purchase the new one for the same?
Moreover, if i don't upgrade my Windows to any 2012 edition and stay on 2008 Standard Edition how much maximum RAM can be installed at a time? is there any limitations? if Yes, please let me know how do i upgrade my Windows 2008 Standard Edition to any other
business edition to avoid such limitations of RAM?
Waiting for your favorable and quick response.

    Hi again,
th eupgrade optiuon from Standard 2008 to Enterprise 2008 was only available for customers with open value contract with activ esoftware assurance then they can purchase the step up license from Standard to Enterprise.
the only way to have the Enterprise 2008 Edition is to make th edowngrad efrom 2012 Standard to 2008 Enterprise. it means that if you purchase the 2012 R2 Standard Edition, you may downgarde to Enterprise 2008/2008 R2. th ebest way to make the downgrade
to 2008 R2 Enterprise is to purchase the current Version 2012 R2 Standard in volume licensing than you can download diretly from VLSC the Enterprise Edition.
with your downgrade you can still using the 2008 CALs.
    thanks

  • CAL Licensing For 2008 R2 Standard Server

    Hi All
I am upgrading a 2003 Domain Controller with 20 CALs to a 2008 Server R2 Domain Controller that comes with 5 CALs.
Firstly, can I use the existing 20 CALs with the new 2008 R2 server?
Secondly, for the life of me I cannot find anywhere that sells Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard CAL licenses. Which I would require 15 of to match my original 20.
Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!
    Ashley Colton

    Hi Ashley,
For Server 2008 R2 you need 2008 or later version of CALs.  You cannot use your 2003 licenses.  Typically what you would do is purchase the latest license version (2012) and they will cover the previous version.  Below is sample pricing
for 2012 CALs only (no Software Assurance) for Open Business licensing program:
Windows Server 2012 User CAL Open Business  Part# R18-04281 $29.47
    http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-r1804281~1350612209.htm
Windows Server 2012 Device CAL Open Business Part# R18-04277  $25.63
    http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-r1804277~1350612599.htm
I recommend you contact a major Microsoft reseller and ask to speak to a Microsoft Volume Licensing specialist.  They can help you determine the correct licensing program for you, give you correct part#s, etc.

  • Oracle Licensing Question on Processors  - Oracle 10g Standard Edtion One

We are a small finance company and wanted to buy Oracle database 10g Standard Edition One licenses.
We wanted to get a 15 users licenses(perpetual licenses)
Now when it comes to the server hardware where we will be installing the Oracle database, do we need
to make sure we have only 1 (or) 2 processors ?
Is there document which will tell me as what kind of processors or any limitations on the processors speed
I need to have on the Oracle database server ?

    Hi,
did you have a look at:
    https://shop.oracle.com/pls/ostore/wwv_flow_item_help.show_help?p_item_id=4777527003091012
? As far as I can see licensing 15 users on a 1-2 socket server should not be an issue. If you would have a bit more users you could consider a socket license (5800.- US$ / socket).
With Standard Edition One or with named users licensing you do not have to worry about the technical figures of your CPU. This is only needed when you license Enterprise Edition (EE) based on processor metric because then cores and processor type are used to calculate the amount of processor licenses.
    Hope this helps.

    David

  • Premium HA license upgrade question

    Hi all,
One of our customer wants upgrade their UCCX from 8.5 to 10.6. They have premium HA license and valid UCSS/ESW for their all premium seats and outbound IVR ports. I checked ordering guide, it showed there is no UCSS for HA license. I'm wondering does the existing UCSS/ESW cover HA upgrade or we need to order CCX-85-10-PHA under CCX-10-UPG-K9?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi
    Just go to www.cisco.com/upgrade
Bash in your UCSS/ESW contract number.
Follow the guide and select UCCX with PHA on the end of it.
You buy UCSS for UCCX, not for HA specifically - you just need to ensure you order the correct license during the upgrade procedure. If you order non-HA, it won't work.

  • How to use MAP to get CALs license

i want to use MAP detect CALs license on windows sever, exchange, SQL sever. can i use MAP to detect, how?

See the Getting Started Guide for a list of supported server products for getting CAL info. For Windows Server, SQL Server, and SharePoint Server CAL info you need to enable logging on the supported servers and then import and parse those logs after they
have been collecting the data for long enough. We recommend 90 days but you can work out the amount of logging that will be acceptable with your licensing professional. You can read how to configure the event logging in Section 1 of the Getting Started Guide.
Exchange, SCCM, and Forefront Endpoint Protection will have data without importing logs by simply choosing those inventory scenarios in the wizard.

  • Numbers of SQL Server CAL license required ?

    Hi,
We are going to set up a SQL Server 2012 Server with 2 instances.  The first instance has 25 maximum number of concurrent users and the second one has 10 concurrent users.
Does it mean that we need to purchase 25 + 10 = 35 CAL license for the setup ?
    Thanks

  • BO XIR2 Licensing Question

Was hoping if someone could help me out with a licensing question I have. I am trying to understand how BO licensing works.
I think it would be easier if I asked the question through an example.
The scenario is a situation where we have a standard BO XIR2 enterprise installation with an app server, db server and web server.
    1. The app server is a normal BO XIR2 installation
    2. The web server is also as from a BO XIR2 installation.
    3. The db server runs the data store and audit module is on in the db.
    4. The following report types are to be used by the end user
        4a. Crystal Reports
4b. Web Intelligent reports (View, drill down etc)
4c. Desktop Intelligence report (View, drill down etc)
    5. The development box is the same setup in which the 10 developers should have access to have access to these build the universes, crystal, webi and deski reports.
    6. The prod environment will be used by 50 users who should be able to access webi crystal and deski reports.
    7. These users should also be able to create custom webi reports
Since the licensing for BO is a bit different, can someone please help understand all the different types of licenses required for this setup?

BO licensing is pretty straight forward, but you should speak to a sales rep for particulars. Generally from the server we have 3 types CPU (in which case everything you stated would be supported), Named Users (in which case you would need 1 per user logging in) and concurrent users (which would require enough licenses to support the maximum of concurrently logged on users).
The slow response is likely due to the US thanksgiving holiday, I'm sure more folks will be back next week.

  • CAL License problem

    Dear all,
I have a server is running windows server 2003 and already purchase 30 CAL license. now i upgrade my OS, i already purchase windows server 2012 and a downgrade kit from 2012 to 2008 R2. So my question is any CAL license i need to purchase?

    Hi James,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you setup RDS environment? If so then you have RDS CAL. From your description it seems that you have 30 USER CAL. If you have server 2012 CAL then you can able to manage lower version of server 2008 R2 but vice versa is not possible.
Please refer below article for more information.

  • Licensing question for AD enterprise with new SQL Server

    Hi!
We have Server 2008 R2 STD where our AD is located and it has enough User CAL's. Additionally we have Terminal server with TS licenses.
Now we're purchasing a Server 2012 where we plan to install SQL Server 2012 STD where we will install our third party program and this program is going to be used through Terminal server.
Now the question is do I only need SQL CAL's or will I have to get both SQL CAL's AND User CAL's for the new server? I'm thinking AD servers User CAL's is enough for the whole enterprise, but I'm not 100% sure and need help with this!
    Thanks!

Licensing questions should be directed to trained Microsoft licensing specialists instead of a technical forum.
    www.microsoft.com/licensing.
That said, SQL CALs and operating system CALs are sold separately.  Talk with the vendor from whom you are purchasing your licenses.  They should be able to help you sort out the CAL questions.

  • CAL License for server 2012R2

Around $800 USD sounds right for Server itself (the Standard edition).  In addition to that, you need user or device licenses, known as a CAL.  Typically people buy user CALs but there are situations where device makes sense.  The Server license does not include CALs, so you do need to buy them separately.

I ask a IT vendor company for a License for server 2012R2
He give me the price of 3000AED = 800+ USD
so at the time of delivery he ask for 4 CAL licenses he said that you have to purchase it.
Any Idea about licensing of server 2012R2

  • WS2012R2 Licensing Question - 95% confident of my understanding, but would appreciate confirmation

After a huge amount of research, I THINK I understand how WS2012R2 licensing works.
Since we’re a new business, we’re keeping things pretty simple for the time being.  I would appreciate some confirmation that my understanding of licensing makes sense though.
I first describe our architecture, then the four options, and then my understanding of the four options.
Many many thanks in advance; this forum has been incredibly helpful as I get started with these issues.
    Machine 1 @ Site 1:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating at hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop session host)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop connection broker and remote desktop licensing server)
    Machine 2 @ Site 1:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as server for electronic medical record software)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as domain controller, DNS server, and DHCP server)
    Machine 3 @ Site 1:
OS:  WS2012R2 or HVS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
Machine1-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine1-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine2-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine2-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
    Machine 4 @ Site 2:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating at hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop session host for remote users)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop web access and remote desktop gateway)
    Machine 5 @ Site 2:
OS:  WS2012R2 or HVS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
Machine4-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine4-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
We've identified the following four options:
    Option 1:
    Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
    Backup Machines 3 and 5 = HVS2012R2 Edition
    Option 2:
Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
    Backup Machines 3 and 5 = HVS2012R2 Edition
    Option 3:
    Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
Backup Machines 3 and 5 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
    Option 4:
Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
Backup Machines 3 and 5 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
    My understanding is as follows:
Option 1 is flawed because we would not be able to boot up the VMs on machines 3 and 5.  This is because a standard OEM edition license cannot be transferred, and so in the event of hardware failure, the license stays with the primary machine and cannot
be moved to the backup machine.
Option 2 is somewhat flawed due to the 90 day limit on transferring licenses.  For example, say Machine 1 fails, and I transfer the VMs and the license to Machine 3.   That step is permitted, however, I cannot reverse this transfer for 90 days
which is obviously suboptimal since Machine 3 is intended to be a temporary backup machine.
Option 3 is sufficient for my needs, subject to the only caveat that I understand that these OEM licenses are "locked" to the physical machine and cannot be transferred to another physical machine.   There are NO other limitations (e.g. I
would be able to legally and practically migrate a VM from Machine 1 to Machine 3 without worrying about activation issues, etc...)
Option 4 is sufficient for my needs, and would be the most flexible as the licenses could be moved if necessary down the road.

As has been stated many times in this forum, it is best to talk to a trained Microsoft licensing specialist about licensing questions.  Remember that a license is a legal contract between you and Microsoft, and using a forum for legal advice is a tad
risky.  Free advice is worth every penny.  www.microsoft.com/licensing.
That said, non-OEM licenses will always give you the most flexibility.  Secondly, you can get a volume license discount with as few as five copies of software, so you might want to investigate that.  Volume contracts provide additional benefits
outside of the what you get with the licenses.  Lastly, ensure that you have enough licenses to host the maximum number of VMs that will ever be running on a given host.  Hint, you mention Standard on a host that is a replica for four VMs.
If all four of those VMs are running, you would need a minimum of two Standard licenses assigned to that host.

  • How can I know if my CAL license is valid for server 2012

    Hi everyone,
I have a domain where all the server are  Windows Server 2008R2, Due to certain progams that are about to enter the organization I have to deploy several new servers that will run server 2012R2 and possibly upgrade a few existing ones to 2012R2 as well.
That is however not the problem.
I recently found out the remote desktop servers that run the RD licensing role, Don't serve windows server 2012, but if I deploy a new RDS with server 2012 R2 it can serve both my old 2008 R2 servers and my new 2012 R2 servers. First I'd like to know if
it's correct and if any of you have tried that in the past. Furtner, I need to know if the CAL license that's installed on my 2008 R2 server is valid for 2012R2 servers as well, is there a way to find that out?
    Hoping for a quick response.

    Hi David,
You are correct, a 2012 R2 server can license your 2008 R2 servers, but your 2008 R2 CALs will not work to license connections to 2012 R2. A good wiki here...
