Dreamweaver 8 Freezing - insert div

Hi. I just installed Dreamweaver 8, and upgraded to 8.02 with
the download upgrade. I am on a Mac G4, using Tiger. I am using
Dave Powers Foundation PHP for Dreamweaver 8 and am at the point of
creating a new page. Using the "insert div" icon I was able to
insert a wrapper div, titlebar div, and main content div. Now when
I try to insert another div using the drop down menu for the
location of the div (want to change it to "after start of tag" )
the menu freezes. I can't navigate up or down on the menu, nor can
I cancel. If I hit "ok" it adds another div each time I hit "ok"
but won't close the drop down menu. Dreamweaver pretty much is
frozen now, except the help function still works. I now must force
quit Dreamweaver. Restarting and even rebooting does not help - the
drop down div menu still hangs the program.
Has anyone had this insert div menu problem and if so how did
you fix it? Thank you!

What are the symptoms?

  • Inserting div in a pre-existing CSS layout

    I am trying to add a div tag to an existing CSS style sheet - twoColFixFt Hdr.css. I want to add a second sidebar under the existing sidebar which is floated to the right of the main content. I want the second sidebar to float to the right of the main content div as well, and be positioned under the first sidebar. I tried virtually every combination of inserting this tag in the insert div window, but I cannot get it in the correct position. I also tried positioning as an AP div (it looks fine in Dreamweaver), but when viewed in Firefox or Explorer it's overlapping the copy in the main content. Any help will be appreciated.

    1. Go into code view.
    2. Find the line of code below (around about line 95)
    <!-- end #header --></div>
    3. Wrap another <div> around the 'sidebar1' <div> as shown below:
    <div id="sidebarWrapper">
      <div id="sidebar1">
        <h3>Sidebar1 Content</h3>
        <p>The background color on this div will only show for the length of the content. If you'd like a dividing line instead, place a border on the right side of the #mainContent div if it will always contain more content. </p>
        <p>Donec eu mi sed turpis feugiat feugiat. Integer turpis arcu, pellentesque  eget, cursus et, fermentum ut, sapien. Fusce metus mi, eleifend  sollicitudin, molestie id, varius et, nibh. Donec nec libero.</p>
      <!-- end #sidebar1 --></div>
    </div><!--end sidebarWrapper -->
    4. Insert another <div> 'sidebar2' directly after the 'sidebar1 <div> as shown below:
    <div id="sidebarWrapper">
      <div id="sidebar1">
      <!-- end #sidebar1 --></div>
    <div id="sidebar2">Sidebar2</div><!-- end sidebar2 -->
    </div><!-- end sidebarWrapper -->
    5. Add the below css selector to your existing css:
    .twoColFixRtHdr #sidebarWrapper {
    float: right;
    width: 200px;
    overflow: hidden;
    6. Amend the 'sidebar1' css to as below:
    .twoColFixRtHdr #sidebar1 {
        background: #EBEBEB; /* the background color will be displayed for the length of the content in the column, but no further */
        padding: 15px 10px;
    7. Add the below css selector to your existing css:
    .twoColFixRtHdr #sidebar2 {
        background: #EBEBEB; /* the background color will be displayed for the length of the content in the column, but no further */
        padding: 15px 10px;

  • Dreamweaver crashes/freezes when doing find in site

    When I use "find" it works fine for a single document but, if I choose "find next" after setting the search to the entire site (or a folder), it performs the search and starts to bring up the correct file, then it crashes.  Behavior is the rainbow wheel of death indefinitately.  I have to force quit and restart.
    I have reproduced this about a dozen times.
    I quit DW, trashed my cache file, emptied the trash, and restarted.  This has made no change.  I have no add-ons of any kind.
    I have quit out of other programs and run DW with plenty of RAM available.  When it freezes I look in Activity Monitor and can see that RAM is still very available and CPU usage is high, but not excessive.  The DW program is unavailable.  I've tried waiting out the freeze but it doesn't end.
    So far, I have had no problems with DW doing other things.  Not even when I open 20+ files at once and available RAM is a tiny sliver.  In that case, I get freezes that last a few seconds, and the program is slow, but everything still works.
    I searched extensively for other reports of this bug and found nothing about the find feature but that CS5.5 seems to be unstable and crashes a lot.  Some reports have linked crashes to using FTP so I tried running find without first using FTP and it makes no difference.
    I need to update a website with hundreds of pages and it's really untenable to search for broken links and outdated text by hand.
    Running CS5.5.  I just got this a couple weeks ago but I previously ran CS3 and could use find in the entire site (the same site actually) just fine.
    I have an iMac 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.5GB RAM.  Running OS 10.5.8.
    I've got to have this feature working.  Please help.
    Thanks,
    Cyndi

    Hmmm...doing some tests limiting the search to certain subfolders or to selected files.  It seems the find function is working fine until it gets to a particular file.  There are several such files.  It starts to open that file then I get the rainbow wheel of death without end.  When I force quit and relaunch, Dreamweaver remembers this file as the last one opened.  I can open any of these files no problem (either from the splashpage or directly from the site directory) and I can search within them without incident.
    What is the search string you are using?  Have you tried making fragments of those files to see if you can identify the block of code that causes the freeze?
    Besides, I can't imagine it would be a good idea to switch back and forth between different versions of the same program.  There is not just one term I need to search for.  This is an ongoing project.
    It woudn't make any difference at all to use CS3 for this.
    Okay, so here's the question, what is causing find to hang like this?  It's not something stopping the file from opening or being searched.  I will gladly remove any bad code or whatever it might be, but some of these files are huge (like 100 pages if printed).  I'm fixing code DW is marking as bad but that doesn't seem to be enough.
    Yes, that is the question!  I have no idea, but sounds like you are on the right path to finding out....
    In the DW Reports panel, there is a tab called "LINK CHECKER".
    Under "Site: Reports..." there is no link checker anywhere.  I found nothing else called reports.
    What is the search string you are using?
    A variety of things: lanmind, lmi.net, lye, chemical.
    Have you tried making fragments of those files to see if you can identify the block of code that causes the freeze?
    I just tried it.  I took one of the smaller affected files (I tested as many as I could (it only will cause a freeze if the search term appears in the file) and found 8 "bad" files) and broke it into two halves, using the same header and footer for each.  The original filename is y.htm.  I broke it into y-test-1 and y-test-2.  1 was fine, 2 was bad.  I then broke 2 into two files, y-test-3 and y-test-4.  And they're both okay!!  WTH.
    I noticed that the source code had some bolded text.  It shouldn't be bold there, just in the display, and it was pretty random.  But there were 3 parts to the file (annotated links) with some bolded source text.  These appeared in y-test-4.  I used save-as to create the test files, not cut and paste.  Yet y-test-4 does not freeze up.
    When I deleted the 3 annotated links from y-test-2, it stopped freezing when being pulled up during a search (I highlight one or more files, making sure they are not already open, and choose "Find in: Selected files in site").  I deleted them one at a time and it wasn't until I deleted the last one that it made a difference.  Then I put back the first two and left the third one out.  And the file is okay.
    But I still can't figure out why.  There is random bolded source code in most of the files (all?), including those that don't give me any trouble.  There are some weird symbols in this link, but they exist in other files that are fine.  Hmmm...maybe not so fine.  I'm now deliberately trying files using keywords that I know are in there.  As opposed to looking for the outdated domain names like before.
    It would really help if someone could give me a list of "bad" symbols or something.  And what does the bolded text mean?  And yes this is a BUG on Dreamweaver's part.  The files open just fine and they display fine in Firefox.  I can use the "find all" function when doing a sitewide search, even the "bad" files will be listed correctly, and then open the files manually.  If the "bad" file is open, I can search within it no problem.  The only thing I can't do is a sitewide (or selected files) search on files that are not open.  The "bad" ones will cause Dreamweaver to freeze as they automatically open.
    So yes, I've found a workaround, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bug and that I don't want it fixed.  And the website I'm updating is really old with a lot of the work done in 1999.  It's for a nonprofit, it's very very important to keep the pages mostly as is, and I'm taking over from someone who recently passed away.  I am revamping things considerably, but, aside from fixing outdated links, I need to work with what's there and keep a "legacy" version.  I'm porting the info to a blog format but it will take months.  (And yes, this particular link is not important but it's the example I have to work with.)
    The bad section of code is:
    <LI><B><I>UTNE Reader's Y2K Guide</I></B><BR>
    <UL> <A HREF="http://www.utne.com/bY2k.tmpl$search?db=dArticle.db&eqheadlinedata=Y2K%20Citizen%27s%20Act ion%20Guide">http://www.utne.com/bY2k.tmpl$search?db=dArticle.db&eqheadlinedata=Y2K%20Citizen%27s%20Act ion%20Guide</A></UL>
    I'm hoping that doesn't break anything and that it comes out okay.  You can see the page on the website here: http://ehnca.org/www/ehnlinx/y.htm
    There are dollar signs elsewhere that seem to be okay but I'm not sure.  That seems to be the only weirdness I can find.
    Any comments?  Are dollar signs (in links, not in text) bad?  I tried another file and found only one dollar sign in it in a link.  I removed it, saved and closed the file, and did a search on it.  And it froze.  So if dollar signs are bad, then they aren't the only things.
    Help!
    Thanks.

  • When I Insert DIV tag, where is the rule?

    http://www3.telus.net/~jessum
    Q1) See on my page where it says "Content for new DIV tag
    goes here". How do I select this and edit it? When I selected the
    "insert new div tag button" I thought it was supposed to add a new
    rule under the <style> tag but I don't see it there.
    Q2) Also see where the wine color "Sidebar" is. How do I get
    the sidebar to extend to the footer?
    Thanks in advance :)

    When you insert a new DIV, you have an option to also create
    a new CSS rule
    on the INSERT DIV dialog panel. Click it.

  • Where is Dreamweaver's new Insert panel?

    Hi,
    I just removed Dreamweaver CS6 and reinstalled it (Windows, ver. 12 rel. 5808) from Creative Cloud, in hopes of finding the new Insert panel with Media/HTLM Video option just announced in this video:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/cs6-creative-cloud-feature-tour-for-web/dreamweaver-cs6-update-f or-creative-cloud-members/
    Unfortunately that revision isn't present in the latest download.
    Will this revision apply to both  Win and Mac?  When will it actually be available?
    Also... sometimes CC notifies me that updates are available for certain CS6 apps and allows them to be downloaded and installed.
    Does this happen with all updates?  HOw quickly?  Manual removal and reinstallation is such a drag!
    Thanks

    Hi Dave, Thanks for your reply!  (I was finally able to download the latest version of Dreamweaver, which had the new Insert panel.) Unfortunately I've been having a far more severe problem for th elast couple of days: (inability to log into Creative Cloud or the support portal. I also can't log into http://helpx.adobe.com/contact/creative-cloud.html to request help! Assuming that you too aren't suffering from these problems... may I please ask you to help out by contacting them, eg., via forum or new issue ticket, and by indicating that I'm the one who needs the help!Here is my profile:http://forums.adobe.com/people/wbaafs And here are a few more details you can cut and paste if you like: Thanks Dave,Richard Kahn (for Bill Anderson)
    For over a day or two I haven't been able to log into plain old adobe.com (except very intermittently, and then can't open other pages from it). I can log into and view forums.adobe.com and get to Creative Cloud forum but I can't sign in and post a message about the log-in problems. These problems occur regardless of whether I try to log in with ANY browser from    -- my Win 7 destkop   -- VMs on my desktop (which don't have any creative cloud application manager or apps or CS6 apps installed on them), or
       -- from an old Vista laptop. Clearing all cookies from Firefox made no diffierence. I saw a staff post on the Creative Cloud forum from earlier today regarding a "degradation" problem with that service. That's putting it mildly! Can ypu please correspond with me via email or else give me a non-adobe.com-based help area that I can log into (or don't need to log into)? Thanks,Richard Kahn (for Bill Anderson)

    Try going to Help > Updates within Dreamweaver CS6, that will launch Adobe Application Manager in a different way for updates. In there you can set preferences for automatically checking for updates for individual programs and how you are notified of updates. I show a newer build that what you listed 5848, so I think there is an update you need to install. -Dave

  • Dreamweaver CS6 freezes up all the time.

    My MacBook is in the shop being repaired so for the time being I'm using my PC. I've reinstalled Windows and loaded Dreamweaver on it. I have a Creative Cloud subscription and running Dreamweaver version 12.2 Build 6006. However, Dreamweaver constantly freezes. I could be opening a file, or just typing and it'll lock up. It's definitely not my PC, I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 (all updated), Intel i5 @ 3.20GHz, 8GBs of RAM. The only thing I could think of would be my hard drive? Although other programs aren't driving the struggle bus like Dreamweaver has been.

    May or may not be related to your issue, but I've had to use this fix for years: http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/kb/hang-opening-document-dreamweaver-cs5.html

  • Dreamweaver cs3 freezes

    i had been working on a website for over a month with

    page and content i uploaded. after a couple of times dreamweaver
    started to freeze on me and when it opened the home page was all
    blank with some gibberish??? I went recreated the page and next day
    when i opened dreamweaver to continue the work.... Again the xhtml
    page was BLANK?? Third time I copied another index.html page from
    its subfolder and started to work AGAIN... now Dreamweaver just
    freezes...... my months worth work is at stake... what's wrong..
    and how can i get this fixed?
    BTW i even reinstalled Dreamweaver from the original disk but
    it still freezes. This is exhausting and very discouraging to use
    dreamweaver for website.

    there is no code. it happened after dreamweaver froze while
    quitting application. when i reopened, it has some odd text and
    symbols...second time just blank page.

  • Inserting an image causes Dreamweaver to freeze.

    Hi,
    Spec
    Dreamweaver CS5
    Windows 7 & Server 2008 R2 (mix of machines)
    4GB RAM
    Plenty of disk space
    Followng these steps...
    Open Dreamweaver
    Click Insert
    Click Image
    **FREEZE**
    Dreamweaver locks up and never recovers. Only happens on standard user accouts, admins works fine. Given 'everyone' read/write permission to adobe folder in program files, but no difference. The only work around I can see if to save the page > create a site > the insert the image; this then works.
    After running the microsoft debugger, attached to the dreamweaver process I get this at the point of the crash
    (1044.1328): C++ EH exception - code e06d7363 (first chance)
    A few of these infact and then nothing.
    Anyone got any ideas. Have tried all latest updates, uninstall > clear prefs files > install no difference. Also the Extension manager keeps say it stopped working when launched.... is this related? As I say only on a standard user, admins all fine.
    Thanks for any help on this matter.

    One of the best solutions in this case in my oppinion is you would get in touch with Adobe Help and Support here: http://www.adobe.com/support/creativesuite/. You could use "Troubleshoot failed installations": http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/828/cpsid_82827.html Recently there is also the possibility to consult via chat.
