Dreamweaver 8 - Problematic Broken Link Check

On a regular basis I use Dreamweaver 8's broken link checker
to convert
relative links to absolute throughout single HTML files.
Once upon a time, I could use the results pane to quickly
replace all
of the broken links. Ever since installing Dreamweaver 8
(upgraded from
MX) I've had the following problem with the link checker:
1. It seems to find all of the broken links correctly,
however, when I
try to change them into absolute, it doesn't actually make
the changes.
2. Sometimes it even makes incorrect changes to the path of
the link,
such as changing the image link to a .html link randomly (I
have no
idea how this happens!)
3. When it asks if I'd like to replace the other references
to the same
file, and I respond yes, it does nothing.
After researching this topic somewhat, I have found temporary
solution,
but it's driving me crazy and I'm looking for a long-term
resolution
for this issue.
If I delete my WinFileCache-xxxxxx.dat file (under User >
Application
Data > Macromedia > Dreamweaver 8 > Configuration)
before opening
Dreamweaver, the problem is resolved until the end of that
specific
session. As soon as I close Dreamweaver and reopen it, the
problem
returns.
I understand that by deleting the WinFileCache file I am
basically
starting with a clean slate, which is why this method is
temporarily
effective. However, this is a daily problem for me and I'm
sick of
having to do it every single time I use the program....
SO...if any of you have any thoughts, suggestions, or similar
complaints, please share - I'm desperate to find a long-term
solution!
Thanks!

Why?

Give me an example of what it finds and what you want to
change it to,
please.

I would have to see this happen to believe it.

The real question is - why are you regularly getting broken
links? The only
reason I can think of is that your local site is actually on
a remote,
shared network drive, and there is intermittant connectivity
to it due to
some recurring network anomaly. Can you tell me how your site
is defined?

  • Does Dreamweaver do a good job of  showing broken links?

I running a broken link check and DW says I have 700 broken, and 300 orphan. But I then check and nothing is wrong with most of those pages.
What is the difference orphan/ broken?
Anyway, I'm flustered. Should I try to find a 3rd party software that does this better in a clear interface? thanks.
    DW 9

    Hi Kevin,
Copying content from How to resolve link errors in Dreamweaver CS6. Click the link for more info.
Orphaned files are pages or images that are not in use or linked to from any place within your site. Although having orphaned files isn’t necessarily a problem, to ensure that you don’t have important files that are orphaned, choose Orphaned Files from the Show menu under the Link Checker section of the Results panel.
    Thanks,

  • Broken Links is Broken

DW CS4 is identifying valid links as broken. Most are links
that were updated in the last few days and they are part of a
template. The local site was saved and uploaded to the website. The
links are OK on both the local site and the website. Is there some
option or setting that needs to be changed?
    For example line 44 on:
    http://www.ironoakconnection.org/index.html
is identified as broken. It's in the left navbar and works as
    expected.

    On this beautiful Sunday.................
    Hallelujah!
Well!  Is  there a way I can send you some virtual electronic champagne?????
I did what you said, changed that code.
The new broken link check showed this:
    flyingtigress.co.uk/index.html    Info/
    flyingtigress.co.uk/index.html    Music/
    flyingtigress.co.uk/index.html    Paintings/
    flyingtigress.co.uk/index.html    Photos/
    flyingtigress.co.uk/index.html    Books/
Then I manually changed each link again one at a time, and the code returned
    itself to
    [Music | Music/index.html]
    [Paintings | Paintings/index]
    [Books | Books/index.html]
BUT and this is the great bit, when it returned itself to that the links were
    NOT broken anymore (allegedly!)
I did find using the site checker those pesky two image files causing a fuss
again, but I manually did those again and again this time I got rid of them too!
So.......the upshot of all this is that YOU are a genius, and I am so grateful
to you.  I just wish I had the knowledge base of someone as expert as you....
but I will learn from these things and hope to deal with problems one by one,
but this is a great great victory!
I bet you will be so happy that you don't see my email again (well at least for
    a while!)
Hahahaha!  Seriously thanks so much, I cannot answer the one about the fact that
the link seems to be checking the remote server, I don't know what all that is
about either, but it seems to be sorted and that is what really matters!
Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!  I need to go and record a song to celebrate!  I think
Lawdy Miss Claudy will remind me of this episode!  Don't ask me why!
    Many many thanks

  • Link checker does not seem to see some broken links-why?

    Hi,
I have a problem with the link checker, it does not seem to report some broken links. Here is the context in which it happens.
My site root folder contains (subset) :
    index.php
    Templates/child_userarea.dwt
    user-area/downloads.html
(The file downloads.html is based on child_userarea.dwt.)
    In the template, I have <a href="../../index.php" title="Home page">Home</a>.
    In downloads.html, this link appears as <a href="file:///M|/Website/index.php" title="Home page">Home</a>.
According to this post http://forums.adobe.com/message/934203#934203 by Murray, this is because Dreamweaver (CS4 in my case) thinks that index.php is outside the site root folder. I understand it thinks so because indeed ../../index.php points to the folder parent of the root folder. What I don't get is why doesn't the link checker report that ../../index.php does not exist? (And I'm sure it doesn't, there is no file called index.php outside the root folder.)
    Emilie

That's the thing, it is correct! I have checked many times. Here is what is says:
    and M:\Website\CERC15\ does exist.
For the time being, I have corrected the paths in the template, so for that particular file, it is now ok. However, I have no idea whether other paths are wrong since I am not sure any longer whether they are spotted by the link checker. I searched for other instances of file:///M|/Website and there is none left.
I suspect this is just one more problem due to another problem non-identified so far (see e.g.http://forums.adobe.com/thread/506149?tstart=30). Since I renamed a big batch of files, I have had problems after problems: the templates disappearing (see that other post); I also lost all the files in 4 other folders (files for download linked to the pages through <a> tags); and Dreamweaver has become particularly slow (but this seems to have been fixed with erasing the cache and the personal preferences).
I'd like to start from scratch again (and why not reinstall Dreamweaver), but I don't know how to recreate the site from zero without loosing anything (e.g. links to templates).

  • Dreamweaver CS5.5 crashes when saving link checker report in Results Window

Select Top level of site. Right click. Select:Check Links > Entire Local Site.
Report completes and displays in Results Window.
Can scroll through the onscreen report and view Broken Links, External Links, and Orphan Files.
However, when try to save, Dreamweaver crashes.
Multiple users on my team with their own instances of Dreamweaver have experienced the same result.
Have tried recreating preferences folder, rebooting, etc. etc.
Any other ideas as how to proceed?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Exactly the same problem here. Started using Find and Replace on a html file which loads 2 css and  2 js files. Find and replace slows the program and finally it hangs. Restarting (and loosing all your prev work) worked a couple of times and then DW hangs when starting up. I couldn't do anything anymore.
The solution, for me, was starting DW and immediately pressing the shift key. In that way DW opens clean, without the prev files.
    Up and running again.

  • Internal link checking with Dreamweaver CS4

    I currently have 3 root directory index pages: index.html, index.htm, and default.htm
My host is GoDaddy and the page that resolves for http://www.amenta.com/ is the default.htm page.  So, I would like to get rid of the other two, neither of which is cached by Google, in order to avoid any future canonicalization issues.
When I go to delete index.htm and index.html in the Dreamweaver CS4 Files window, I am alerted that there are many internal pages linking to them.
How can I pull up a list of all of these pages?
Also, when I try to run a "Change links sitewide" function and I enter "Change all links to : /index.html" "Into links to : /" I am prompted that "no links to /index.html found".  But when I try to delete this file, I am shown the first several of 186 such files.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Thanks again John.  DW indicates that there are 185 files linking to index.html when I attempt to delete it through the Files Window.  Here is the display:
However, each of these 6 files link to / and not /index.html and I can not figure out how to pull up a list of the rest of the files beyond what this alert message shows.
When I attempt to delete index.htm through the DW Files Window, I am alerted about just one file linking to it.
Perhaps DW is programmed to consider /index.html as the default for any link to / but on my host, the default page seems to be default.htm which is why I want to get rid of index.html and index.htm to avoid any duplicate content or canonicalization issues.
But before I delete index.html, I want to be sure that I am not creating a bunch of broken links when I do so.
And, when I try to run the following "Change Link Sitewide" command...:
...I am prompted that no such links exist:
Thanks again for your looking into this with me.  If nothing else, I will just go ahead and delete both index.html and index.htm and then do a check for broken internal links.

  • Is the CS4 Link Checker Broken?

The Link Checker in CS4 correctly shows me my broken links.  In the Files tab, I create a new file to fix one of the broken links.  I run the link checker again, and it still reports the file as missing, even though it is now listed in the files tab.
If I exit Dreamweaver, come back in, and run the link checker again, it runs correctly (it doesn't show the link as broken).
Is this a user error or a bug?
    Brian

    Hi
This is not really a 'bug', it just takes cs4 a while before including your new file into the site cache. To give you some idea of how long, try cut/paste a file from your os's file browser into dreamweaver.

  • Check broken links in Adobe Acrobat

    Hey everybody,
I am searching for a Plugin for Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Professional, which check brocken links in a pdf-document and create a report with all brocken links. Here I mean links like www.microsoft.com. A broken link link is www.12nmu8098.com . The report must conclud the broken link and the number of broken links in the document.
    Best regards
    hallodu1889

Thanks for your answer. I tested this plugin but it functioned not correctly. Normaly the result of the test of www.rez2828zdhs.com must show, that it is a broken link. The report of this plugin shows that this is a correct link. Do you you know an other plugin?
    Best regard

  • Templates show up as having broken links in site link check

    CS6
I have about 20 templates for my site, and a couple of them show up as having broken links when I do a check links site wide search?
When I make changes to these particular templates now, the new links and associated pages will show up as having broken links also?
Then when I map the new pages to the correct page, I get the template is locked message?
I suspect the problem starts with why are the templates being included in the link check to begin with.
    Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Wholesale site and each supplier requires a different menu and lay out.

  • Checking for Broken Links

Is there a solution out there for checking broken links in a content area in Oracle Portal?

I think a third party products will check broken links by identifying links which return a 404 error.
Portal (at least 3.0.6.6.5) does not respond with 404 but gives WWC-46000. I doubt a third-party product will recognise this as a broken link.
Analyzing apaches log files is of no use either. The error log gives no entries, the access log shows apache has responded the request with HTTP-200 , which is correct if you see the problem from Apache. Apache does a request to modplsql, a page is returned, and Apache passes it on.
The problem becomes somewhat more complicated if you consider access rights to folders. A link can be OK for userA, but can be broken for userB.

  • Phantom broken links in Dreamweaver CS6

Dreamweaver shows that I have 73 broken links, but they all work in my browser (and other people's browsers).  Why?  How do I get Dreamweaver to recognize that the links are not broken?
I am using Adobe Dreamweaver CS 6 on a Windows 7 PC.  The website is www.mathguy.us.  I set it up through GoDaddy.com
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Earl

Based on your comment, I took a look at the common thread on all of the missed files.  4 of them are PHP issues, like you suggested.  The other 69 links all had ampersands in them.  I suppose this is the issue.  I will try changing the file names to use "and" instead of "&" and see if that helps.  Thank you for your suggestion.
Update:  This worked.  I can deal with 4 identified broken links due to PHP.  Taking the ampersand out of the file names fixed the rest.  Thank you very much!

  • How to check for broken links on my remote site?

How can I check for broken links on my _remote_ site using DW10 (i.e. DWCS4)?
I know of the Link Checker tab so as to check the local site.
I've been using the app Integrity to do this, but it would be convenient to be able to also do this in DW.
    Running OS X 10.8.2.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Ron

Over the years I've had both happen.
I'm not saying this happens often... it doesn't... but it does happen.
And this is with my site links working fine locally.
So it is either happening on upload or on the servers.
I can't tell you the number of times I've asked webhosts (I've had many) why a site is not working at all... and they have told me that they are either doing work on their servers or that they're 'upgrading' and moving my sites to another server. So perhaps this is part of the problem.
Again... rarely happens but it does happen.

  • Relinking files through link checker does not work properly.

    Good Morning:
I am using Dreamweaver CS6, and updating an old site (built in CS4). I have over 100 broken links to graphics which I am trying to relink through the "link checker" - will sporadic success.
I have to update this site yearly, with new product graphics.
When I try to update using the "check links sitewide" feature, I can update maybe two graphics, and then it will hiccup on the third attempt and REFUSE to relink to the new graphic I direct it to.
My computer specs are as follows:
    Mac Pro
Processor  2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    Any help would be appreciated.

My guess is that you defined the language used to check on one or a few number of words.
Select all the define the language to use.
I'm quite sure that, after that, it will do the trick correctly.

  • Link Checker

I am using DreamWeaver 8 and I am having problems with file
paths and names. If I use the link checker it shows a lot of broken
links. When I look at the results everything seems to be missing
the first letter of the filepath.
    For example:
    /forms/forms_building_construction.html
will show in link checker results as
    /orms/forms_building_construction.html
I have also seen this in other areas of DreamWeaver.
Does anyone know why this happens. It is causing me
    frustration.
    Thanks,

Where exactly is the Local Site Folder?
What kind of drive/network is it? anything at all odd about
    it??
please open a new document in dw.
    Don't Save it.
insert an image that's inside of this local site folder.

  • Broken Links and Deleted Template

First: I have 13 pages of broken links. Where is the link to

There was only one internal broken link.
there's maybe a dozen external links with problems.

The link to the css file is broken.
