Dreamweaver & Adobe Pagemill
I have downloaded a trial version of CS3 to see if it can
convert and update my website. This was constructed using old
software - ADOBE PAGEMILL v3 - now discontinued (and not even
mentioned on the Adobe website). I'm still using Pagemill fine on
Mac OS 9.1 but it won't transfer to my new computer which is Mac OS
10.4 (Tiger), hence the need to upgrade. My site is huge and has
thousands of images, so starting again from scratch is not an
option.
Customer Services at Adobe told me I should be able to 'open'
my Pagemill pages in CS3 and 'synchronise' with them on line. Does
anyone have a clue how to begin? Any help is appreciated ...
This has already been answered in the thread, but I'll give
you the
executive summary -
1. They are difficult for inexperienced users to get right -
a) pages will not align properly if one of them throws
scrollbars
b) links will not work when targeted into different frames
without
hand-modification of code
c) new (and inexperienced users) have problems with the idea
of a single
frameset page that only specifies constituent frames
d) new (and inexperienced users) can be confused by the fact
that the
<title> tag on the frameset page is the one that
appears in the browser
e) etc., etc., etc.
2. They are difficult for your visitors
a) depending on how savvy you are, you may have removed
scrollbars to
'fix' #1b, not thinking that you have also removed those
scrollbars for
people with smaller viewports
b) search engines will index *all* pages within your
frameset, meaning
that a navigation frame or a content only page MAY be shown
in a search hit
list - imagine the confusion when the page is loaded without
navigation, for
example
And - they are so amateur. Really.
> Won't I lose the buttons/menu bar?
The way to convert a framed page to a non-framed page is to
copy content
from each frame and consolidate it into a single page, so the
answer to this
question is NO, certainly not. BUT - you have to have the
facility with
HTML to build a page HTML infrastructure that can accommodate
both the
navigation and the content.
Honestly, if you are asking these questions, you will really
be well advised
to take a break and spend a few days here -
http://www.w3schools.com - so
that you can pick up enough HTML understanding to move
forward.

Is Adobe PageMill 3.0 still available? I use it to run three websites but it does not run on my new desktop which has a 64-bit operating system. However it would run on my laptop which runs under Windows Vista. But the original installation was from floppy discs and I do not have a floppy disc drive.
I am sorry Lcosahedron I am not aware of a download location for Adobe PageMill 3.0. It appears it was discontinued in 1999. You can find more details at Adobe PageMill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

For years I've put it off....... I've been using Adobe Pagemill 3.0 !! forever. In OS9 on the old G4, but now on the new IBook there is no OS9 and I can't get to my web site.
Will iWeb do this for me? Import an existing web site in it's existing format? I have Fetch to use as an FTP client....... It seems not, as it's forcing me to pick a template to even launch the program.....
If not, what is the least painfull (and that includes $$) solution to my problem? I have a LOT of photo's stored on my sites that are referenced in numerous forums.....there would be a rain of blue"?" and red "X" if it went South.......That worked......thanks! It's up and running looking good on the big screen...
Now I have to figure out how to import the site. It will open individual pages, but not a folder...
There is a forum I have registered..... -

Only if you are willing to put it in a drawer until you have
learned enough
HTML and CSS to be able to look at a page's code and feel
comfortable with
how the page is doing what you see in the browser.

In this video you’ll continue to further customize your website using CSS or Cascading Style Sheets. With CSS you can control many visual aspects of the website efficiently and consistently. Learn the basics of how CSS rules work and how you can easily take advantage of the power and flexibility of CSS in Dreamweaver including creating and editing your own CSS class.
http://adobe.ly/wTlFxCsome of these tutorials don't really work. changing the body image to scrolling or fixed doesn't change anything on my computer, and apparantly doesn't change anything on the version that the instructor is using either, since he never shows us the "before"

In this step of the tutorial, you can find out how to use the files panel in Dreamweaver to organize and set up your site on the local hard drive in your computer – while it is still being worked on before it can be published to a web server later.

Learn how to create and prepare images to incorporate into your website design. Save them in web friendly JPG or PNG formats while maintaining a good balance between quality and small file size. Import them into Dreamweaver and make some initial adjustments to layout and alignment.

Take a quick tour of the Dreamweaver workspace including various panels and the Code/Design views. Begin building your page by starting with a blank HTML page, and then bring in your content from a text document. Go on to brush up the page by changing some of its basic properties.

http://adobe.ly/AxN9kHyou truly are evangelist, I watched your pervious stuff, and to be honest, you are one of the most advance tutors in terms of how simply and clearly you explain most complex tasks. Thank you Adobe for keeping Paul. I hope he does more of these! With even more examples...

After several years I stop using Dreamweaver, Adobe focus on basic functionality!
First, sorry for my english its not my native language.
DW is my favourite editor but after several years I stop use this product because its crap... sorry about that but its true.
All my live I create websites, I never doing something else so I know what pro user really needs, but absence of basic functionality is main reason to leave DW and start to use PHPstorm.
Brackets and tag highlighting is still missing in DW, Adobe think about it.... in some cases its hard to use it.
Bye DW and thanks! You shouldn't need to export anything, though I don't know what they do these days for trial version restrictions. You should be able to save it to a disk directly using Save As (at this stage since it's already saved most likely).
To save a copy of it as a CS3 file, again, you choose Save As, and in the bottom of the file saving interface you should be able to select CS3 from the lower drop list. I don't know what Macs come with for zipping files. On Pc's these days you simply send the file to a compressed folder via a filename--when you right click it a menu appears with that as an option.
At this stage I figure it likely has to do with whatever tweening you do for the buton mc's, but I'd be guessing even more to try to tell you what to try. It will probably involve having to move your event listener assignment code and that could get a little tricky. It'll be easier for me to try it out than to take you thru each possible approach.
So see if you can save a CS3 copy of it (change the name so you don't lose your current file) and let me know... if you can compress/zip it, better chances the email servers will process it. If so, I'll send you my email address via a private message. -
Opinions wanted concerning Dreamweaver/Adobe Business Catalyst
I wanted to get some opinions related to Adobe BC. In January I made the decision to start an online marketing company. last week I published my site and officially opened my doors. My focus is on PPC advertising, but I wanted to offer web design as well because the two are so closely related. My plan all along was that I was going to work exclusively with templates. I don't have the time, knowledge, skills, or experience to build custome websites. But I can turn a template into a workable site fairly quickly.
So now I have my first client wanting a website and PPC campaign. Whoo hoo! Then I came across Adobe Busisness Catalyst and wondered if I should be leaning that way. I wasn't planning on doing eCommerce sites and this first client wouldn't be, but it does seem that there are some features of Adobe BC that would work for me: the ability for my clients to edit their own content, web apps, forms, blogs, forums, built in analytics, email marketing.
That all sounds good, but the price is a little steep. First there is the $989 sign up fee for me (I'm broke). Then there is the $16 to $39 a month fee for my clients, which is on the neighborhood of four to six times higher than a regular hosting plan and Google Analytics is free.
So what are your thoughts?
Emilio
http://www.ClickHereOnlineMarketing.comThere have been numerous comments on the adobe/incontextediting forums (from a couple of Adobe people - Christenel, e.g., http://forums.adobe.com/message/2756449#2756449 and Rich, e.g., http://forums.adobe.com/message/2759339#2759339 ) with respect to BC as a replacement for ICE.
Among the significant negative points are that
this is a hosted service from Adobe, so one is locked into whatver specs they have like traffic, number of domain aliases, etc.
they do not support php
they have a database, but what it is is unspecified.
their have their own "formbuilder.(sounds like yahoo, doesn't?
Adobe seems to be going away from industry standard programming methods and substituting their own.
it also sounds as if one has to completely rewrite one's code, at least if there are any dynamic elements to it.
Quote from Cristinel (emphasis added):
The beauty of the BC system is that you don't have to re-write your contact forms in another language. The system comes with a large number of predefined modules that you can use directly.
For any custom forms, you get a forms builder that creates all the logic and database fields. Once the customer or user fills that form, the information is stored in the database and you can even trigger email alerts for each event. Even more, the Admin dashboard displays a live feed that shows the activity on the site.
On the PHP side, I am not at all questioning the importance of PHP in today's web development landscape. I'm just saying that, although we're not using or supporting PHP, I am pretty sure that we can cover most of your needs with the current system. This is why I am asking what kind of applications are you looking for, because we might already have an equivalent on the BC platform. -
This lesson covers how to create multiple pages based on the page you have already created earlier. You’ll then learn how to set up the navigation and how to change the content for each page including adding different background graphics by customizing certain CSS properties while still maintaining the shared CSS scheme across the site.
http://adobe.ly/xLdpe4After this tutorial no 10 my background image didn't change for the rest 3 pages. It stayed the same even though I made a new css rule as shown. I picked tag, this document only, and body as a selector name. Changed the bckgrpund color to black, and than changed the picture as well. I clearly see the new "body" css rule that is above my Paolo css rule in the side bar, but no changes on the pages, I still got the same bckground image for all of them.
Any ideas? Anybody with a similar problem? -
I'm trying to make 2 columns in the center of a page in Dreamweaver - adobe CC. I don't want to use tables. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much for offering to help but the organization changed their mind and decided to go with a photo display instead of their original design format. Now I'll have time to study up but if I need help, you'll see me posting again in the future. This is a wonderful forum that I didn't really know existed until now.
