  • Fix "Windows cannot find" designated webpage error on launch; only with Epic, not firefox.

When Epic is launched from a desktop Icon calling for a particular web page, it throws up a "Windows cannot find" Specified site error box, but then goes ahead and loads the site. It only happens with Epic; never had this problem with the regular Firefox browser.
I make these Icons by dragging from the address bar once I reach the site. It is a quick way to return later.
    Very frustrating, please help.

Firefox 21 and Firefox 22 running on Windows 7 have been reported to take a long time to "wake up" from sleep. I realize hibernation is different than sleep, but... this is the closest match for your description.
Some users have reported that this problem is resolved in Firefox 23 (currently in beta). Others have had inconsistent luck with minimizing Firefox before letting Windows sleep and other measures.
Please check out this (very long) thread for more information: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/961898 browser freezes after resuming from sleep]
Or jump to the part about Firefox 23: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/961898?page=3#answer-457321
The fact that this just started recently suggests perhaps it is related to another program or update, but I don't think anyone has confirmed the exact interaction that causes the problem.

  • What are the extra 13 paritions? root user security concerns?

I [was] running Yosemite 10.10.3 on a Late 2014 iMac Fusion Drive SSD and HDD
This might be a bit confusing, and I need assistance from someone who really knows what they're talking about here.
When messing around trying to secure my system, I enabled the root user to view certain files, and accidentally did not disable it when I was finished. After this, I unknowingly ran my computer for probably a month as the administrator with the root user enabled, and made number of downloads in the process (which used the same password as root). After recently realizing this, I noticed in my activity monitor that some of my downloaded application were running as root user, not as administrator, as I thought they should be, and I also found malware after running ClamXav.
Because of all this and my compromised root, I wanted to ensure there was no third party code was deeply embedded in my drive, so I backed my important data, and actually proceeded to (very carefully) separate my fusion drive using 'diskutil' commands, wiping and reformatting everything but the base system. Then, I booted into safe mode to check the "diskutil cs list" and "diskutil list" through the terminal, and was surprised to still find 17 partitions in total, including those in my Logical Volume Group. Command "diskutil cs list" reveals partitions /dev/disk0 as my SSD, /dev/disk1 as my HDD with .efi and recovery,  and /dev/disk2 as the apple base system, and ALSO /dev/disk3 as my HDD again (which is an unusual addition to what I have seen as typical LVG diskutil cs list outputs, though I assume it is just be related to booting from recovery mode with no OS on my disk any longer)
Command "diskutil list" reveals these disks (/dev/disk0-3), along with small partitions, dev/disk4, /dev/disk5....all the way up to /dev/disk16. All these unknown disk partitions 4-16 range from 0-4mb in size. One of my main questions is simply what all of these extra partitions are.... are they just required hidden partitions only visible through the recovery mode boot?
Even if so, is there a possibility that my actions explained in the first paragraph have compromised the integrity of ANY of the disks on my drive(s)? I do not want any installs to have access to my root, or to have embedded anything into my core system, regardless of whether they are malicious or not. I did not do a full zero secure wipe, as I figured that would be overkill and wear on my drives,  but am also curious if it is even possible that the base system or other core components could have been injected with any 3rd part code. I know I may seem overly paranoid but I want to ensure that my system does not have any security holes from the start, before I go about re-installing all my software again, some of which opens up security holes, but I am required to have it for my work.
I want to note that I have already downloaded a new OS through internet recovery mode onto my reconfigured fusion drive, and do not see these extra partitions when I am logged in as a user, however they still appear in recovery mode, re-affirming my assumption that they are simply hidden partitions only seen through the recovery boot menu. I still have not loaded any of my data however, and regardless of whether or not the extra /dev/disk partitions I noticed are simply hidden apple boot partitions, any advice on whether I should zero-pass wipe any drives and reinstall the OS again to absolutely ensure there are not security holes after having my root user compromised would be greatly appreciated. I could even resort to a full dban and use a snow leapord install disc I still have, but do not want to put extra wear on my drive it there is no chance these core drives were compromised. Sorry for not posting a picture of my terminal output as well; I was unable to setup an ssh connection to do a screen shot from the recovery partition. And thank you ahead of time to anyone who takes the time to read this and give me any advice.

These are photo screen shots with the UUID's covered, showing the output of "diskutil cs list" and "diskutil list".
I need to note that I have since re-separated the fusion drive in and then did a secure erase 1 pass of zeros over the HDD thinking that would solve the problem after realizing that these were not apple boot components, but I checked the output of "diskutil cs list" and "diskutil list" again and they were all embedded in there just as before. In response to someone elses comments I have made multiple encrypted .dmg files, but I thought I have only made around 4 or 5 EVER, not all these other ones, and was unaware that they stay embedded in your drive as partitions even after reformatting it. I also see that part of disk one and part of disk three are still fused together as a LVG, which makes this even more confusing. I cannot understand how all these partitions ended up like this, I did not intentionally add a SINGLE partition to my drive, and never separated the fusion drive until just the other day when I noticed all these extra partitions that couldn't be deleted. I'm beginning to the think the only solution is to do a one pass DBAN over both the drives, and then, (hopefully) I will be able to re-attached them in a fusion drive (which I have been able to do once now), and use an old snow leopard install disk to upgrade back to my Yosemite. Is that my best bet, and are there any risks involved with even doing that? If anyone has any other recommendations on a a simpler, safer way to delete all this extra stuff, and just get myself back to the core components so I can re-fuse my fusion drive and download as fresh OS, I would be beyond grateful.

  • Only root user can run GDM

I'm attempting to move from lxde to gnome. I installed the gnome package, and ran "sudo systemctl disable lxdm", "sudo systemct enable gdm", and rebooted, but during the boot it froze after starting the gdm. After rebooting a couple of times, I switched tty and tried to start it manually, but it tells me that "only the root user can run GDM", so I'm assuming that's the problem. Does anyone know what I can do?
EDIT: Booting to lxdm works fine

  • Menus in LXDE, only root user has them

So I go through "Beginner's Guide" and get to the part about "Choose and install a graphical interface".
I want LXDE so I try to follow directions in wiki article for "LXDE",
installing group lxde and other items as they are suggested.
    Now
as root user I can start LXDE by issuing from command line
    xinit /usr/bin/startlxde
and I get LXDE running OK with menus populated with the few applications I have so far.
    Problem:
As a non-root user, I start LXDE by issuing from command line
    xinit /usr/bin/startlxde
but the only menu items I get are "Run" (which does nothing) and "Log Out" with does offer me a log-out window.
I suspect a file exists somewhere that root user can find and use
    but
non-root user either cannot find it or doesn't have sufficient permissions.
    Ideas? Advice?
    Thanks.

We need more information. How much of the wiki did you do? Did you do this part?
After the installation finishes, copy three files to ~/.config/openbox as instructed by pacman:
    Place menu.xml, rc.xml and autostart in ~/.config/openbox
They can be found in /etc/xdg/openbox
    As the user of interest
    mkdir -p ~/.config/openbox
    cp /etc/xdg/openbox/menu.xml /etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml /etc/xdg/openbox/autostart ~/.config/openbox
    Did you do this part?
If not using a display manager you would like to add
    export DESKTOP_SESSION=LXDE
to your ~/.bash_profile in order xdg-open to function properly.
Do you have a .xinitrc file in your user/home directory?
To start LXDE from the command line without a ~/.xinitrc:
    $ xinit /usr/bin/startlxde
If ~/.xinitrc already exists this will not work.

how can you use iMessage between 3 iPads with 3 different users but only one Apple ID?

No you do not need separate Apple ID's in order to use 3 devices with one Apple ID. I use 4 devices to Message and FaceTime and all use the same Apple ID. You do need to add additional email addresses for the other devices.
Look at this very informative video for the instructions.

  • Concern with "File Sharing: On" -- my root user folder (and subfolders) and Macintosh HD is visible

    Hi all,
When I set up a File Sharing folder in OSX called "Share", I connected from my PC to my Macbook Pro and not only did I see the "Share" folder but I also could see and have total access to my root user folder (all its subfolders too) and my Macintosh HD (hard disk).  Did I miss something?  All I did was check mark "File Sharing" in the Sharing option of System Preferences.  Then I specifically shared only the "Share" folder that I created on the OSX desktop.
How do I turn of sharing for the root user folder and my Macintosh HD folder?
    Many thanks in advance!

Yes, I was logging in from my PC laptop to Mac as the Admin.  However, since there is a User called "Everyone" and I, for testing purposes only, turned Read/Write on for "Everyone", I figured I did not have to set up another user (such as "Guest").  I was wrong.  Once I created a new user called "Guest" and specifically checked the Guest account in the SMB option, it worked in the restricted mode I was hoping for.  Thanks!

  • Non-root user cannot umount a SAMBA share if there is "SPACE" with the

I already post this to the bugs report http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9672, but I would like to see if someone in the forum can help.
    Description:
If there are "SPACE" in the SAMBA share name. Then, a non-root user can mount that share, but cannot umount it with "umount" command. It gives "mount desagrees with the fstab" error. root can mount/umount without any problem.
Also, user can umount the share by "smbumount" without any problem.
    Additional info:
    * package version(s)
    samba 3.0.28A-1
    util-linux-ng 2.13.0.1-2
    * config and/or log files etc.
    /etc/fstab
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Add a line in /etc/fstab as the following
    //QNAP-500GB/USB\040Disk\0401 /mnt/eBooks smbfs workgroup=GROUPNAME,username=xxxxxx,ip=xxxxxxxx,password=xxxxxx,noauto,noatime,users,rw 0 0
as you can see that SAMBA share name "USB Disk 1" was replace by "USB\040Disk\0401".
    2. Change UID of/usr/bin/smbmnt and /usr/bin/smbumount by
    chmod u+s /usr/bin/smbmnt
    chmod u+s /usr/bin/smbumount
    3. Change the ownership of the mount path for this SAMBA share to a non-root user by
    chown username:users /mnt/eBooks
    4. mount as a non-root user (username)
    mount /mnt/eBooks
    5. ERROR! if umount as a non-root user; NO ERROR if umount as root.
    [ning@HP-m8100y ~]$ umount /mnt/eBooks/
umount: /mnt/eBooks mount disagrees with the fstab
    6. This SAMBA share can be umounted by
    smbumount /mnt/eBooks

Did you try using %20 instead of a space?  I know it works for URLs...worth a shot.

    Hi,
We have a problem only with one user, when the user access the UWL get the following error:
    Runtime error in the portal
Exception in processing request, send the ID of exception to your portal ADMINISTRATION
    ID exception 10:54_21/10/11_0037_8766350
The other user does not have problems accessing the mailbox.
The user is assigned the role of the mailbox correctly.
Any idea what may be the problem?
    Thanks and regards

    Hello,
The best way to see what these issues are is to check the trace for when the run time error has occured:
Log on to the portal, recreate the runtime error.  Then follow:
1596214 How to find the latest default trace from right after
reproducing an issue.  Please ensure that you have reproduced the
issue with a user that is experiencing the issue that you have reported.  When you find the most recent default trace file, copy and paste the numbers from the portal screen and do a ctrl + F with the trace file opened and paste in the runtime error.  Now you should be able to see what is causing this issue.
Then when you get this information, please paste or attach the file here that contains the runtime error for the user.  From this we should be able to figure out why the user is getting this.
Also as an admin user, try clearing this users personalizations on the Universal Worklist first.
Please clear all personalizations with the affected user and retest.
Here is the help link to show you how to clear the personalizations:

I have just install BPC for NW sp03. I have windows domain controller and computer with window server that was included on this domain. on this computer I have install .NET part of the BPC. Under the user bpc_sysadmin I can saw the users that are into domain in adminstration console. I can add them into the apshell and other application sets. I gave them all the permissions.
but when I am trying to access my application sets I can't saw them. so I can work only with my user bpc_sysadmin. what I am doing wrong? thanks

    Hi,
normally when you run connection wizard, here once you mention the valid user name and pwd and at the end it will tell you "no application sets available for this user" if this user is not added properly for this application set.
So you should check the secuirty again using your admin user and see that you have added this user, assigned to team/task profile and member access profile. Also check the task profile and member access profiles if they are configured correctly or not.
    regards,
    Sreedhar
