Dreamweaver Design VANISHES

I have finally finished my design for our school website and
-POOF- the design view in dreamweaver has disappeared. I have tried
the view "design and code" as well as just "design". Still nothing.
When uploaded, the website still works but is uneditable in the
design view and shows up as nothing. I have tried copying the code
into a new web page and I still recieve the blank design view. Any
advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Why not fix some of the errors first?

Also, might pay to have a look at your first couple of
<table> tags, one is
set to 90%, the next one is 110%!

• Dreamweaver Design Projects MySQL...

Dear all,
I posted here a couple of times over the last two weeks and had excellent help from everyone so thanks.
However, I feel like I'm spending a lot of time and energy with the design project from an old book and wondered if there are any books you can buy in the UK that take you through, step by step, the process of building a dynamic site (that has an online CMS portal to update content and add new pages via putting the data into the MySQL database). The book I was reading is based on DW MX 2004 and I am using DW9 so I think that half the problem of getting it going is due to the fact my copy of DW has moved on.
Has anyone any ideas of books I can buy or web-based content such as open-source web page templates that I can take apart, play with and learn from.
Any ideas welcome.
Best wishes

Take a look at my book, "The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS4 with CSS, Ajax, and PHP".

• Page Content Won't Display in Contribute (Edit Mode) or Dreamweaver (Design View)

I have pages on my site that have  decided they don't want to display content either in Contribute (in edit
mode) or in DreamWeaver (in design view). They always look fine in Live view, prior to hitting the 'edit' button or when viewing in a browser. Using CS4 on Windows XP. I use Contribute for small edits and this renders that tool useless as there is no WYSIWYG. It's a pain in Dreamweaver to have to keep previewing in browser when I'm used to working in code/design view. Any help most appreciated. Here's the page I'm currently having the problem with:

• Dreamweaver Design Problems

Hi. I'm new to the forums, and I have a small problem. I've
just started using dreamweaver as the development platform for our
company's joomla templates, but whenever I access either the split
or design view, Dreamweaver will crash within 10 seconds or so.
I usually only tend to code, so it's not that big a problem.
It's nice to look at the template though, and see where the changes
need to be made. Typically I'll have a php file, and the associated
css file open. I also run Joomla Stand Alone Server, which did me
proud on freeware editors before I joined my company.
Any ideas?

Which DW? Which OS?

How do I fix My Dreamweaver CC 2014 Design Screen when it turns black in Live Mode?

Hi Subhadeep,
The problem was in my script file. I commented it out and then it worked.
Thank you for trying to help me.

• Hiding things in Dreamweaver Design view

Hi, I have this huge Flash object on my page that is covering
up roughly 75% of the page view. It is on a floating layer and I
need to insert text under it. However I can't draw a new layer to
do this, nevermind the fact that this huge gray box makes it
impossible to see what's under it. Can I hide this Flash object in
the design view, work under it, and then unhide it? Please refer to
this image: www.dwbgallery.com/stuff/dw-flashobject.jpg
Thanks!

Good luck dale....

• Dreamweaver design question

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and ha da design question. My site took about 3 weeks to complete and after finishing what I though was a pretty error free website I noticed that dreamwever 8 was coming up with numerous errors that matched http://validator.w3.org's scans. My question is this. Why does dreamwever ( regardless of the release ) allow the designer of the website he/she is creating without pointing out the errors as they go along with simple instructions on how to fx them.  As an example My meta tags
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="xxxxxxx">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="xxxxxxxx">
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="xxxxx">
<META NAME="author" CONTENT="xxxxxx">
<META NAME="copyright" CONTENT="xxxxxx">
all had to be changed over to
<meta name="keywords" xxxxxxxxxxxxx">
<meta name="description" CONTENT="xxxxxxx">
<meta name="robots" CONTENT="xxxxxx">
<meta name="author" CONTENT="xxxxxxxx">
<meta name="copyright" CONTENT="xxxxxxxx">
all because dreamweaver didnt tell me that the <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
       "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
didnt fit the original design. Now my site ( if you wish to view the code ) is www.gamblingwhore.com and if you look at the page source you will see that the code has been corrected on dw 8 but still shows more than 30 errors on http://validator.w3.org. Does dreamwevaer not have the basic tool available to fix these errors without such hassle. Its not just my site either, many sites built in dreamwever can be checked with the http://validator.w3.org website only to find more than 20 -100 different errors.
Dream weaver creators need to focus on these errors because they hinder seo and they create alot of extra work
Thank you

The w3c and XHTML have come a ways since the release of Dreamweaver 8 (I used it in late 2004 and 2005).
Dreamweaver 8 will build transitional XHTML files as well as old style single tag HTML. It all depends on the personal preferences of the designer.
Just for kicks, go to say... 20 random websites and see just how many get a green light when you validate them. If its half, you're lucky. This page doesn't even validate;
Dreamweaver has the menu option (at least in CS3 an CS4) under the Commands menu to "Clean Up HTML" or "Clean Up XHTML" depending on what you're building. I make a point of running that command as I build along with Apply Source Formatting.
I also use a local validator program to check my code before putting anything.
That's why they call it WYSIWYG software.
If it did everything perfectly for everyone every single time, good web designers would find themselves out of work.

• CMS for Dreamweaver designed site

HI, I designed an 8 page website for a friend with dreamweaver cs3 and he would like to access the pages himself to make text changes from his own PC.
Is there a CMS that he can download and use to change text and images on a website desinged with CS3, I see from other discussions Webassist and Cushycms mentioned, but are they suitable for CS3 designs.
Thank you

This should have been discussed & in your contract well BEFORE you began buiding the site.  It costs more and requires extra coding to make a CMS site.  I hope you plan to bill for all the extra work involved.
#1 find out if your client's server supports PHP & MySql.  This will be required for just about any CMS you decide to use.
#2 The CMS you choose will depend on 4 things:
         a) your coding skills,
         b) client's  requirements,
         c) your server's programming languages,
         d) project budget.
Below are some links to look at:

• Is there any tool to export a dreamweaver design to blogger?

Hi, my name's Will, and I have a blogger blog called Futbol en vivo the url is http://futbolenvivoargentina.blogspot.com/. Currently it has a modified standard blogger theme, I've done a new theme under Dreamweaver, and I want to know if there is any tool to simplify the process of exporting my new theme to blogger.
Thanks in advance, Will.
Futbol argentino en vivo

Hi, if you need export partial information, you can export the information with TABLES option into export command, there you can specify the tables for export, you must design the plan for the information distribution.
Regards.

• Dreamweaver & Designer + 6 Part series for cs6

I am a High School teacher trying to have the students follow the "Bayside" first website tutorial. From reading other post I can see there will be some conflict because the tutorial is done in CC and my classroom has CS6. Where can I expect the differences to start or cause a problem if I have the class follow the video tutorial, while also referencing the written 6 part series for CS6?
Also, I only see 5 parts to the 6 part series. The final piece on publishing does not seem to be included or the link is missing. Thanks

One of the main new features in Dreamweaver CC is the CSS Designer, which figures prominently in the video tutorials. Since your students won't have access to the CSS Designer, they'll run into difficulties right away. Also, the written tutorial for CS6 uses a completely different design, so it's not likely to be of much help if you want your students to create the Bayside Beat case study. A lesser problem is the way the Insert panel is organized. CC has a Structure section. In CS6, it's called Layout. Some items have also been moved to different sections of the Insert panel.
The link to part 6 of the CS6 written tutorial is at the bottom of part 5. What does appear to be missing is the link to part 6 in the CC written tutorial. It's not immediately obvious, but it's under the Tutorials and Samples heading after the instructions. Part 6 can also be found simply by changing the number in the URL.

• Non-profit needs Dreamweaver design help

Small non-profit serving homeless veterans and veterans in crisis needs design help with Dreamweaver website.  The website was created as a school project by university students but there are some design issues that we are not able to correct.

It appears to be template driven so the basic layout is inside your site folder's Templates directory -- main.dwt.   This file drives the site wide elements such as navigation, common headers, footers and sidebars.
Child pages created from that main.dwt file contain editable regions for content that will change from page to page.  Only content in these editable regions are editable from child pages.
Whoever will be responsible for updating content should get familiar with CSS & HTML code.  This is required knowledge to work with Dreamweaver.
Start here:
HTML & CSS Tutorials - http://w3schools.com/
Code validation tools
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
http://validator.w3.org/
Also thoroughly read DW's Help docs (F1) under working with DW Templates.
It looks like the students did a pretty fair job of building the basic site for you.  Now it's up to your org to swap out the generic stuff with relevant content.   I don't advise you to alter the basic layout or structure.  It's all there.  You just need to get up to speed on how to work with it.

• Centre not working in Dreamweaver Design View (CSS+HTML)- Preview OK- help!

Hi there
I am having a slight problem with DW which I have had before, and fixed, but I cant for the life of me remember how I fixed it.  So any help is much appreciated.
I am producing a proof site for a client and cannot load it to be live just yet so sorry for any inconvience but I have taken some screen shots and will paste code/html.
The site is currently sitting like this  in the design view of DW

Which it usually doesnt.... its usually centred within the design view!!
this is how it sits in the preview

My main page container is margin left auto and so is the margin right.
(please excuse my experiment with the drop shadow behind the main container)
please excuse me if anything is messy, im pretty new to this!!

        float:left;
        background-image:url(../../CL%20-%20New%20Ideas/Images/pb-home-bottombar.jpg);
        background-repeat:no-repeat;
.bottombartext{

        color:#000;
        padding:25px 0px 0px 50px;

"<body leftmargin="float">"
Can you say what that's doing? "float" is not a legal value for the leftmargin style, which requires an integer value.  But its use is deprecated in favor of CSS anyhow.
Your pasted code is lacking a doctype or anything that would normally be above that stylesheet link.  Is that just an oversight or is it really not there?

• Dreamweaver design view doesn't show the bottom part of a long div

Hi!
I'm doing a very graphics oriented site, which basically requires me to use a large jpg as a background image and placing text areas against this background     using absolute positioning.
My problem is that Dreamweaver doesn't show me the bottom part of my content div's background, but renders it as black instead. This obviously makes placing the text areas correctly difficult, since I can't see them against the background.
If I turn on Live view, then Dreamweaver shows the bottom part correctly. But in live view I can't use rulers and guides (or can I?).
Is there any setting that I can change so that Dreamweaver is showing me the whole div bg in all situations? One possible cause of this problem might be also that I'm using overflow:scroll on my content. Could that be why Dreamweaver hides the bottom part and can I change that behaviour?
Any ideas are welcome!

If we can see the page in question we could probably do this a lot easier.  But all you need to do in your CSS for the background is:
background: url(pathto/image.jpg) fixed no-repeat;
If you are trying to absolutely position something in the middle you will be unable to do this without the assistance of javascript to determine the useable pixels on the end-users computer.  Horiztonally is not the issue, but rather vertically because you can achieve horizontal centering by defining a width and setting the margin: 0 auto; in your CSS.
As far as working with overflows, if there is too much content in them that you believe the overflow will be necessary (assuming min/max-widths are set) you could consider including the content from another document or store it in a database and query the information out.  Then it would make it easier for the client to update the content on their own in the future.

• Entire Dreamweaver-designed site not showing up in IE

Hey there, I'm a novice web designer building an html website. This is my 4th website I've built using these techniques and for some reason only the background is showing up on Internet Explorer and none of the content. The site works fine in Mozilla. Can't tell what I've done wrong here, can anybody help?
Here's the site: http://www.lawofficesofeliotgorson.com
I also welcome any criticism of the coding etc. Anything that'll make the site better. Thanks

This is probably the bulk of it right here:
Line 1,         Column 1:     no document type declaration; implying "<!DOCTYPE HTML SYSTEM>"<html>
The checked page did not contain a document type ("DOCTYPE") declaration.      The Validator has tried to validate with a fallback DTD, but this is quite likely to be incorrect and will generate a large number of incorrect error messages. It is highly recommended that you insert the proper DOCTYPE declaration in your document -- instructions for doing this are given below -- and it is necessary to have this declaration before the page can be declared to be valid.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
            "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
          <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en">

I have Design Standard V6 for Mac. The In Design icon won't respond and I can't open the program. I have found it impossible to navigate through to Adobe where I purchased online to re-download the ID program. Help much appreciated.

Peter,
Thanks for the help. Via your suggestion and deleting some preference files we have been able to get it back up.
I notice this is your 47,838th post. That must be some sort of record?
