Dreamweaver Help | Edit an existing remote website

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/using/edit-existing-remote-website.html

There is a program called Beyond Compare that will perform a comparison of local and remote folders via FTP, but it works on Windows only. I don't know if there's a similar program available for Mac OS X.
One way to find the number of items in the public_html folder on the remote server is to log into the site's control panel, and see if you can find the number of items listed there.
Alternatively, select Remote Server in the Dreamweaver Files panel, right-click the public_html folder, and select Synchronize from the context menu. In the dialog box that opens, select Entire [Site name] Site for Synchronize, and set Direction to "Get newer files from remote". Then click Preview.
Because you have such a large number of files, it will take Dreamweaver a long time to get all the information. In fact, you might find it just as quick to create a new site definition in a new folder, and attempt to download the site again.

  • Dw cs5 with existing wordpress site hosted on yahoo need help connecting to existing remote database

I am having trouble establishing a database connection.  I can  connect with test databases but am having trouble using dreamweaver wtih  my existing wordpress website.  Am I able to use dreamweaver to edit  and live view my changes before uploading the changed files to my live  site?  Am I able to access my existing wordpress database with  dreaweaver?  I have imported it to my testing server/database but still  seem to be having trouble establishing a connection with it (think maybe  my folder hierarchy might be off).
    macintosh HD/Applications/MAMP/htdocs/nwm/wp/index.php
"nwm" is the name of the folder that I have copied all of my site  files to and the folder I have dreamweaver pointing to.  "wp" is what I  have all of the wordpress files in (the ones I copied from my yahoo  server - including all my current theme files etc.)
I am trying to put the info into the mysql connection dialog box:
Connection Name: Testing (i am assuming this name is for my benefit only and doesn't actually matter)
    MySQL Server: mysql
    User Name: *****
    Password: *****
    Database: wp
    and am getting this message
    MySQL Error#: 2013
Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error 61
did some google seaches of the error.  Tried turning off the  firewall, and the advance tab allow mysql incoming  (there were 2 one  was allow one was not allow.  I changed both to allow)
Cant really find anything on yahoo to help me out.  Looked in  phpmyadmin database named wp: wp_users to get the username and password  (which due to previous look for help - I think the password was  encrypted cuz it looked like a bunch of mumbo jumbo and am fairly  certain I know the correct password).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I spent $50 on live chat  last night trying to resolve the issue only to find out at the end that  the guy really didn't understand my problem and doesn't have  dreamweaver.  I have also watched countless videos on Lynda.com and have  been thru forum after forum.  While this problem is only a couple weeks  old since I just got CS5.  I have been having trouble making any  headway learning php since I cant seem to make it past the set up  parts.  I have done the php / mysql essential training on lynda.com with  relative success except that I really dont want to work with any more  exercise files so I didn't go on to the beyond the basics. I recently  went thru most of the Dreamweaver CS5 and Wordpress 3. Also did the  first 4 chapters of Dreamweaver CS5 with PHP and MySQL. I need to start  integrating things into my live sites.  I am also trying to work my way  thru the learning php, mysql, javascript book by o'reily media by robin  nixon (as fun as reading a math text book) can't get thru it since I  can't relate any of it to my current sites/needs
I am on MacBookPro OSX 10.6.6
Installed MAMP to specification on all 20 tutorials I have tried including lynda.com
Tested the testing server and is working
    Just installed dreamweaver cs5
have been using wordpress online to create and edit posts (recently  upgraded to 3.? whatever the latest update was online which I believe  update the files on my yahoo server?)
Have also installed wordpress on my computer (several times thru each tutorial trying to get this right.)
    Am I expecting the impossible?

If wordpress controls it's own connection why am I unable to use the live view. I have synced the remote site to my local computer so all the files should be just as they are online with the exception of the DB which contains most of the content.
I have done all of those steps.  I have even exported the database from inside internet phpmyadmin and imported into computer phpmyadmin.  When I hit live view I get one of couple of errors.
    1.  "One is that the dynamic related files could not be displayed due to an internal server error"
At some point I was able to view some sample files inside dreamweaver.  But I would like to be able to view my real site files.  I was able to "connect" to the local databases (not the copy of my real one - I think that maybe that was because it is somehow nested inside another db an am going try to reimport to new location).  And then I changed the host/username/password trying to deal with the internal server error. Now instead I get the cannot connect to the database Error 2016 or whatever from the origianl post. Also, I am using yahoo if that matters and all I can find about what their server name is: mysql - is that correct?
I have been thru this so many times with so many different tutorials I am losing track of what is what.
    2.  Can I access my remote database within dreamweaver? I do not want to create dummy files (seems to be a waste of time).  And while if it had worked exporting/importing a duplicate on to my computer would have satisfied me for a little while it also seems some what counter productive.  Since every post and page is different if I were doing a daily updates etc how would I be able to change the formating or design of them if I can't access the remote files.  Would I re- import everytime I want to work on it to get current database?
I am trying to be clear.  I listed all the specs I could think as listed  in your "how to get help fast post" (yes I read that at least twice  too) of all of the steps and possible reasons for my problems.  I also  thought that the forum was on a seperate site so I didn't think it would  count as a duplicate.  I am frustrated to tears and am feeling  incredibly stupid that after all this time and all these tutorials yes  you are right I obviously am not understanding what is going on which is  why I am on this forum.

  • Downloading and editing an existing WordPress site in Dreamweaver CS5.

Hello! New to the forums, here.
I'll try to be brief. I've got a WordPress site in-place at metalmeter.com that is hosted through HostGator. Basically, what I'm looking to do is get the site from the remote server and edit it in Dreamweaver CS5, previewing all changes on a local testing server before putting the updated contents back on the remote server.
Now, let me be clear: I've tried plenty of the tutorials. I've watched hours of videos. I still can't get it configured properly. I've got the FTP connection to the remote server running smoothly. I've got XAMPP installed. I'm having difficulties (and I apologize for being vague), and I just don't know where the problem is located. In my htdocs folder for XAMPP, I've got two subfolders 'metalmeter' for the remote server's downloaded contents, and 'wordpress' for the wordpress installation that every page seems to be pointing me toward. What confuses me is that when I try and open the uppermost index.php file on the remote server, the dynamically discovered content is not being displayed in the live view with my local testing server. I want to be viewing my existing WordPress site in its entirety exactly as I see it online while I'm editing it, and then pushing back updated files to the /public_html/ root directory of the remote server so that I can edit the site from my local client. I'm extremely new to Dreamweaver, so any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
If you know how to do exactly what I'm trying to do and have been successfully viewing and editing your existing WordPress site in Dreamweaver for upload, please take some time to explain the set-up. I'd be forever in your debt!

I've been following this discussion for a while now and I don't understand why you hope to edit articles from DW.  That's what the WP Admin panel is specifically designed for.  Besides, you won't find your articles in any of the site files because they don't exist there.
I agree I don't see any reason to want to edit a Wordpress site in Dreamweaver. If you are using Wordpress then you may as well put Dreamweaver in the bin. Although people do actually want to edit and manipulate the design in Dreamweaver (including myself) and from what I've read its possible but I've never found a source which explains fully how to achieve this and those that I have it seems too much effort to even bother about.
I guess the Dreamweaver environment feels more like home and is more user friendly.
To put it another way, a typical WordPress installation contains around 800 files in some 80 folders.  Those files don't contain any content, just a whole lot of PHP code.   In fact, the only page most people ever see on your site is the index.php page which is dynamically created over & over by the server with content from the MySql and various include files.
For sure and that's why people who use Dreamweaver and feel the need to manipulate a Wordpress site in Dreamweaver because Wordpress is 'in vogue' get lost. Wordpress just containes a lot of pages with nothing to see apart from some php, many of who will not understand one jot.
Unless you're a coding guru, you should definitely NOT touch any of the core WP files as this could cripple your site.  If you want to customize your Theme, look at the CSS and include files in your Themes folder.   See Anatomy of a WordPress Theme:http://yoast.com/wordpress-theme-anatomy/
    lol your not wrong there!
For a quick tip on Theming, open your remote site in Firefox equipped with the 'Web Developer Toolbar'.  Edit CSS on screen.  Save changes to your local site and upload it to the remote server.  No testing server required.
Wordpress is Wordpress and Dreamweaver is Dreameaver. As far as I can make out the two don't mix.
Ideally you would just choose a Wordpress theme which most relates to the nice site you have designed in Fireworks of which you won't find any however goodthe themes are. Then manipulate the themes css that's if you can understand it. Even for a seasoned css expert its heavy going because everyone produces css differently to achieve the same results.
Leave Wordpress well anlone unles you're going to use it out of the box so to speak or as a web-developer don't mind a bit of reverse engineering.

  • How to edit an existing muse created website with muse on a new computer?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm pretty new hear and could use some help. I downloaded Muse back when it was still in beta and used it to create a website www.southernski.com      I really liked it's ease of use since i'm a newb at writing html and haven't gotten the hang of Dreamweaver. I need to update the site and make changes. The pc i was using before was running XP and the version of Muse then worked on it fine. But Muse has left XP behind and will not install the update on that machine and so I've installed a new version of Muse on a laptop with Windows 7. The files i used to create the website are on the pc that has failed and so I need to try and find out if it is possible to edit the existing site I have uploaded on a hosting site (not muse or adobe) and make the changes that are needed. Can someone please help me answer this question?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Sean

    Hello Sean,
It is not possible to import the pages etc. from the hosting site to Muse for editing purposes. This is because Muse only opens files with the extension .muse (which is the extension for the muse website file that is created and saved in Muse). It is not possible to import .html files etc. in Muse for editing purposes, hence, you won't be able to edit your current website in it, however, if you are able to locate the .muse file that you created earlier (if you have a back up somewhere), you can simply copy that file in your new computer and open in it in Muse to start editing.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers

  • How do you edit an existing website in iWeb?

how do you edit an existing website in iWeb?

An existing website as in: editing one which has not previously been uploaded via iWeb?
I don't think you can. With the wysiwyg editing of iWeb, you can create a whole new website, make a new subdomain site or even upload a few extra created pages.
Thing is iWeb will only upload or save what you are making in it, therefore you can upload a whole new website to a domain, or upload them manually with ftp-clients. That also means you can't import an exsisting, for example html, script and edit it.
So in short: for as far as I know, you can't import whole pages into iWeb and edit those, you can only create and upload them.
Or as in: editing one I've already made, and uploaded on the same Mac?
Then simple make the changes you want, and hit the "Publish" button in the far down-left corner of the window. It will then overwrite the site you currently have.

  • Existing Kompozer Website but Wish to Move Over To CS4 Web Premium

Hopefully, i am in the right place to ask these questions. I'm a real novice but we needed a web presence and tried a hand at Kompozer. With no prior experience, or training actually managed to get something up. The site has only a single page at the moment with two external link buttons.  But now we would like to turn to CS4 Web Premium as our needs have grown. I have read and watched any number of tutorials and some say, Download the Existing (Remote) site using an FTP program such as Filezilla and then edit it Locally.
I am under the impression you don't actually need to use Filezilla, or another FTP with CS4 Web Premium, as it has a built in FTP feature? Is this correct? Can someone please educate me and hold my hand and walk me through this process?
I've downloaded my entire site to my desktop from a Backup provided by the hosting site. I'm not sure if this is what I need for an edit.
The hosting site gave/gives the option to download The Entire Site, or just certain folders but being "green" I wasn't sure about this option.
OTOH, (Since I am confident all is not perfect) If I were to start from scratch can I design A New Site Locally while the Kompozer built site stays up and then simply replace the current site with the New CS4 created one? Can I configure CS4 to Publish the changes from the existing file names and settings?
For example my current site is comprised of a single folder (on my desktop) containing 6 items total; An index.html, 4 individual jpg images and a single favicon ico (which i did upload separately as Kompozer didn't want to cooperate at the time. Admittedly I'm not even sure what FTP program I resorted to in effort to get it done .  . I don't have a separate folder for Images etc, Everthing is just in one folder all together at the moment.
I'm a little concerned I might delete a file that was there when I first set up the web hosting before I actually uploaded anything at all.
My web hosting provider (Blue Host)  said, Where Dreamweaver Asks What Folder on The Server Do You Want To Store Your Files In? The Path you put in is Public_html and provided a link to a tutorial but it seems it is for a New Site as opposed to editing an existing one.
PS. I confess my vocabulary comes from reading the glossary of terms
A genuine and most sincere Thank You in advance for any assistance, suggestions and learned Tips.
I know we all have to start somewhere in effort to learn.. Please be gentle with me.

I would recommend leaving your company website on the server for now until you have created your new one  :-)
On most servers, public_hmtl is the folder where all the files reside to make the website 'live'.  That's the name of the folder I have to upload all my website files to on my server as well.
Without seeing the code produced by Kompozer, and guessing it is a WYSIGWYG editor, then I'd strongly suggest that you start from new  :-)  Seeing as you only have one page at the moment, it won't be a monumental task to start over.
I'll supply you with a few tutorials found at the Adobe site that will help you get started, in particular - a tut on working with DW templates., which will be the answer for you if you have more than one page but up to 10 for example, if it's going to be much larger site, then using Server Side Includes may be the way to go.

I designed a website using Web Page Maker (a WYSIWYG web

Contribute as a product is mainly targeted for audience who
    want to do
Web-Editing rather than Web-Designing.. however contribute
    comes in with
most of the popular ways of editing the page.. however, it
    also goes on
with how you would want your website to look at... Do you
    really need a
<div> for it or would it suffice with a <table
    border=0>! A <div> cannot
be created newly however you can edit an existing one or you
    can
choose to follow this work around...
Edit your page, File->Actions->Edit Page source in
    External Editor...
Set your Web Page primary editor to say NOTEPAD in
File->Preferences->Web Page (htm)... Add a div in
    notepad... open it
back with contribute and add your content in the div..
    Hope this helps..

  • Set up dynamic, remote website on local environment for development

I am not too experienced with dreamweaver (the extent of my knowledge is youtube tutorials and self taught).  I have inherited a website on a remote server that I need to do some major editing.  It is using MySQL, php, html, and css.  I have already downloaded the entire site for local development.  However, the php will not function without a server.  Would anyone kindly provide some resources on how to set up this site up with MAMP for local development (or any alternative ways to develop inherited websites like this)?  I know how to set up MAMP from scratch, but not with an already developed, remote website that needs to be edited/redeveloped.
It seems like if I redirect the server to a local one, it will mess up a lot of code when I attempt to upload it back to the remote server.  There has to be a more convenient/integrated way to do this than recoding the database access every time I switch from local to remote.....

You'll still need to pull everything onto the testing server, if it's going to be different from your remote server. Here's a good resource for using testing servers with DW...

It might not match your exact version, but it should be followable for the most part.

  • Ex frontpage user new to dreamweaver help!

    hello all,
I am very new to dreamweaver MX and have only ever used
frontpage 2000. I just dont know where to start and was hoping for
    some quick advice.
In frontpage you could see the navigation pages so you just
click on one or create a new page. It was very user friendly. I am
creating a very basic page so my first question is how do i create
a website? title it "my acting website" and start with an index
page with a template/title that will go on every page i create.
Do you recommend any tutorials? if there are any for creating
    a basic website?

Have you looked at the Dreamweaver help files themselves ? F1
    and do a
    search for ' Templates'
You need to create a basic dreamweaver template, with all the
    elements that
will be on every page and declare an editable (an area that
    changes on every
page - eg: content area) . You then would create 'children'
    pages from
    this template.
A basic knowledge of html and css would be advantageous to
    you also :)
You may also want to check out the css tutorials at the Adobe
    site - (last
    link in my sig)...

I thought the issue might have been security settings in IE so I've pointed my IE to another client's SBS 2011 Server and am able to open the site. Does anyone now what I can do to troubleshoot this issue?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Hello Larry, I never fail to post in the wrong thread... Thanks for your reply.
I did not add a DNS entry for remote.mydomain.com on our internet DNS. I am accessing the site the same way I get to our /owa site. https://mail.mydomain.com/remote
When browsing to the URL in IE nothing comes up, it acts as if the site does not exist. The odd part was that I can use Firefox to browse to the site, log in, and view resources on our domain. RDP connections to any PC or Server in my domain always fails
    in Firefox though.
I've been trying to log in my site for days and got the same result every time using IE. I tried it one more time last night so I could report exactly what IE Showed but I was finally able to log in using IE...
Last night before IE connected to the /remote site I went into the session state of the /Remote site in IIS and changed it from In Process to Server State... I did this just to see if I could get IE to behave in a different manner than the blank page...
RWA threw errors when trying to log in from outside the network using IE, I changed it back to In Process and at that point IE allowed me to log in and I was able to use RDP to log into the SBS2011 Server.
I thought I could come back to it this morning and test more connections but now I can log into /Remote using IE but am not able to RDP into any resource in the domain...
I'm at a complete loss so any help you or anyone else could offer is greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Dave

  • Need help entering text into my website

    Hello,
You'll have to forgive me as I am new to Dreamweaver, HTML
    and such things.
I have created my website interface, as shown here:
    http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/1452/mywebsitepm9.jpg
I created this in photoshop, then sliced the image into
slices and exported it into Dreamweaver.
I wish to add text to the large white box in the middle of
the page, what is the best way to do this?
    Thanks for any help

A method that is highly unlikely to produce a worthwhile
    website. Photoshop
is an image editing program, not a website building program.
    If you are
trying to become a bona fide web designer I suggest you start
    by learning
HTML & CSS. This is a good starting point:

If you are just trying to create a one-time site for your
    personal use you
are probably better off buying a template and then just
    filling in the
blanks. Search this NG for sources of quality templates.
    Beware, many
template sites sell pure junk. Try here:
