Why choose Solaris 10 over Linux?
Hey everyone -
I was wondering if any of you would mind telling me what advantages Solaris 10 holds over Linux?
I'm not well informed on their pros/cons and would love to hear the perspectives of some gurus.
Thanks, I appreciate the insight!I am actually in the process of trying to answer this question for an upcoming project I am involved with. I have worked heavily with both Linux (SLES10, RHEL specifically) and also with Solaris 7,8,9, and 10 over the past several years. Honestly, I can argue on either side but I am trying to find compelling answers to bring to the management table. This may be like the search for WMD's but I think I have some answers and I continue to find myself leaning towards Solaris as I have in the past. One of the biggest reasons I chose Linux in the past was the ability to run on X86. That no longer is an issue. The many advantages of Solaris are for sure Dtrace which I have found extremely useful. Also one thing i'm finding is that support has become cheaper through sun than it is through Novell. One other thing is hardware. I have several Sun hosts that have been around longer than I have and continue to run while it seems I'm getting 4-5 years or less out of my other servers(Dell). Linux has gotten 10 times better since 2.4 and even better with 2.6 but with Dtrace, Containers and ZFS, I'm partial to Solaris. Also, ACL's are good in Solaris. I've never used them in Linux so I cannot comment.
If I'm off base on anything let me know and please add anything else. -
Versions for Oracle installation over Linux
We are working for a project in the university, and basically we want to install Oracle over Linux, and develop some web applications. Before we start this project, I would like to learn which Oracle(8i or 9i) and Linux (Red Hat or Mandrake) versions would work fine and perfectly together. Since this project will be time consuming, I would rather take a right decision before we get into details.
I would be glad if anybody share that kind of experience,
Thanks in advance,

MBA Program8.1.7 on RedHat 7.1 =>Thought we were using older version that would work better...
Wrong... 4 systems hang every 3 days to 2 weeks... testing a RH VM patch now...
TAR open for 6 weeks!!! we look bad despite conservative approach...
appreciate suggestions from anyone...

hi
i need to know which is better, to deploy JSP application over Windows or over Linux and why ?The Java runtime environment doesn't automatically give you access to the OS environment variables. You need to pass the environment variables that you want available in your runtime during startup. This is done using the "-D<name>=<value>" options (see java -help for full syntax).
For Tomcat 4.0 you can pass parameters to the JRE by specifying the options to be passed in an environment variable named JAVA_OPTS (e.g. export JAVA_OPTS='-Dname=value'). For more info on this checkout the documentation at the beginning of the bin/catalina.sh in your Tomcat install directory.
Hope this helps. -
How to Talk to an MCU over Linux
I am running Arch64 and I have an Intel 8051 microcontroller (Silicon Labs C8051F020) with the USB-to-JTAG connection. I installed the latest SDCC from AUR and am planning to modify an example code from the C8051F020 page (https://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/mix … 1F02x.aspx) to blink an LED (it's my first MCU project). Does anyone know how I can transfer the binary, once I've compiled it with SDCC, to the MCU itself, over the USB-to-JTAG cable/box? Is there a driver I should install for it or something? Thanks in advance, and I apologise for what is probably a dumb question.
I like the Atmel AtMega stuff myself. Nice little chips that are well supported in linux. The Atmel JTAG even integrates with gdb letting you debug from with your favorite environment (emacs, netbeans, etc...)
But, as to your question. I have not used an 8051 in over a decade, but you might see if you can get this to work:
https://www.silabs.com/Support%20Docume … ources.zip
You will have to compile it in the traditional GNU Autotools way
./configure
make
sudo make install

Well, maybe. WineHQ reports good results (with a small sample
size) for
running DW 8 under WINE:

Dreamweaver on Linux, when?
Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum. I'm the CEO of a company
here in Italy and for our graphics we use all macromedia suite.
We love linux and we want to know if someone knows anything
about a macromedia and photoshop linuc version.
bye ALEK<shrug>
Whatever. Arguments here aren't going to make this happen.
PS, ID, and DW are all workstation apps. Who cares what is
being run on
servers? If the workstation market is there, the development
will proceed.
If it's not, it won't. It's very simple economics, not a
popularity
contest.

Sqldeveloper's window blank over Linux
Hi Forum
I've installed Sqldeveloper 1.1. Patch 1 over Mandriva Linux 2007 via rpm and via zip file for multiple platforms. Installation process was succesfull but in both cases when I ran sqldeveloper.sh application window appears with a normal behavior (Tittle in Window Title Bar, Icon, Minimize, maximize and close buttons, resize borders) BUT inside the window doesn't appear any kind of control: No toolbars, nor edit area or connection tree.
I'm using j2re version 1.5.0_08 and KDE 3.5. Any Idea for correct this problem ?
Thanks in advice !!I'm not sure this will overcome your issue, but try using a JDK instead of a jre. I'm currently using Mandriva 2007, gnome and JDK 1.5.0_10. I've also successfully used JDK 1.5.0_08.
I never tried to get it to work with a jre because the SQL Dev download page refers to 'JDK 1.5'.
Good luck! -

How doi install osx10.6 over linux mint 14 on imack7.1 i have disc?
i insert the disc and it comes up windows support, boot camp installer
First you must have a Mac that is capable of starting up from Mac OS X 10.6. If it came originally with a later version then it will not run 10.6.
What is necessary is a 10.6 installation DVD in order to start from (either the original that came with the Mac or a retail one which is still available from Apple). Then you use Disk Utility to reformat the hard drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID partition table. After this you install 10.6.
You can look up the model at one of the following links and see which Mac OS X was originally installed.

Can't view rest of document in Dreamweaver CS3
I'm a long-time GoLive user who has converted a number of
sites to Dreamweaver over the past few months. Yesterday I began to
convert an 1100-page PHP web site, representing my largest and most
complex client site. What I noticed immediately is that 90% of the
pages show only the menu bar in the "design view" area and are
blank below that. The code all displays properly in the code view
area. I'm really puzzled by this behavior.
The </head> tag shows in yellow in the design view.
Following that, I see the menu bar which is actually brought in as
an include file. Below that, every page is blank, except for PHP
template pages which are HTML pages and use slightly different
code.
In testing to try and isolate the problem, I found that the
page showed only when I deleted the line which called up the main
menu bar using an include file:
<?include('../components/menu-about.html')?><br>
What's curious about that is that this include command is
nothing new. Includes date back to the mid 1990's. There are other
include files in the HTML, and those display properly. I've checked
and double-checked the formatting for the include, and it is
correct. It displays properly in all browsers and is read fine in
GoLive. Only Dreamweaver chokes on this particular included object.
So I looked through the include file itself to see what I could
find.
It contains a couple of GoLive-specific Javascript function
calls in the head section, and the body tag has an onLoad call to
the GoLive Generated script file. However, when I removed those and
tried again, Dreamweaver still refuses to show the rest of the page
unless I remove the menu include from the code.
Any ideas how I can get past this annoying problem? I've gone
back to GoLive, hoping that CS4 might solve it, but this seems to
be a really weird one and I'd like to have a solution in place
soon. Thanks for any help you can offer. This behavior (especially the yellow-highlighted markup) is
diagnostic for
invalid HTML (most likely duplicate <html>,
<head>, or <body> tags - or a
lack of the proper pairing of the opening and closing tags).
See if that's
the case.

Hi All,
I've successfully installed Oracle8i EE version 8.1.7 on RedHat
Linux 7.2. However, I have NOT had much luck installing Oracle
9i version 9.0.1 on RedHat Linux 7.2. I am wondering if anyone
in this forum has any luck installing Oracle 9i on RedHat Linux
7.2. I am running Linux kernel 2.4.7-10.
Now I am not trying to start a shouting match here; however, it
seems to me that a person with any common sense would not run
Oracle database on a Windows platform. Instead of running it
on Windows platform, one would be much better off running it on
Linux platform. I am currently Oracle EE 8.1.7 on an dual-Intel
processor 266MHZ with 512MB of RAM with Linux as the Operating
System. I have to say that the performance of the box is really
solid. At the same time, I am also running Oracle EE 8.1.7 on
an identical hardware system with Win2K server and I have to say
that the performance system is really pitiful on this Win2k server.
The windows box can only 1 instance at a time. If I try to have
two instances running at the same time, the windows box just comes
to a screeching halt. In contrast, the Linux box really rocks. In
a testing environment, I have 3 instances running at the same time
and the linux is barely breaking a sweat. I am getting maximum
performance out of the linux box because I recompile the linux kernel
to optimize the box to run Oracle database.
Having said that, as an Oracle DBA newbie (with less than six months
of Oracle DBA experience, the last ten years as a Cisco/Unix Engineer),
I find it fascinating that Oracle is only certified to run on SUSE (may
be I am wrong and someone can correct me on this one) when RedHat is
probably the dominant Linux distro. It took three days to get Oracle 8i
version 8.1.7 to install on RedHat Linux 7.2. Why Oracle is slowed to
support Linux RedHat is something I just don't understand.
OK, enough of venting my frustration, if anyone has successfully installed
Oracle 9i EE version 9.0.1 on RedHat Linux 7.2, please share your knowledge.
In the mean time, if anyone interested in obtaining instructions on howto
install Oracle 8i version 8.1.7 on Redhat Linux 7.1/7.2, send me an email
at [email protected] and I will send the instructions. The instructions
are written specifically for "windows dummies" so it is very to read and
follow. If you have been Unix for a long time, there will be instructions
in there that are so easy some of you may ask why put those in there in the
first place. My response would be: "windows dummies".
Regards,
Michael (david)I very much agree with you Oracle is working very much better on Unix/Linux than Windows BUT in many cases you are obliged to use windows ( in Case that My company high managment enforce it ) , I have installed 9i on Windows and Linux , I am herunder including the full details :
========================================================================
Installing Oracle 9i on Linux
Linux : Redhat 7.2
Oracle : 9i Server EE 9.0.1.0.0
RAM Used : 256 M Ram
Hard Disk : IDE RAID
Linux Kernel : 2.4.4-10
JDK : Blackdown jdk118_v3 => downloaded from www.blackdown.org
All shell here is the Bash shell ( Bourne again shell )
1. To run a shell script over Linux , just drag the shell file from the file manager and drop it to a shell window
Be sure to have swap space of 400 M or more
If the systems stop responding for some time , leave it , it will continue
Be sure to make a stage area for the CDs # 2 , 3 only because you will start from the CD 1 but after going in the installation the CDROM freezes and refuses to open door to replace CD ,, in this case you will switch to the last 2 CDs from the stage area
Make sure you have the following executables at /usr/bin : MAKE , AR , LD , NM , C for Unix that is installed during Linux installation from the distribution media
Steps ( Root User ) :
1. be sure to have to have your server domain is like hostess.com.eg and you can be able to ping it
 open /etc/hosts
 add a line as follows ( for instance ) :
 192.168.0.11 hostess.com.eg hostess
 ping hostess.com.eg
 ping hostess
 ping 192.168.0.11
 be sure to have a replay for all of them
2. install JDK inside the /usr/local directory => after downloading the JDK you can easily decompress it but just clicking at it using the GUI
3. get to the / prompt
4. type ln s /usr/local/jdk118_v3 /usr/local/java
5. download binutil RBM from Redhat for version 7 of Linux to downgrade binutils for Linux 7.2 or you will encounter an error at the third CD set
6. download it from : ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/7.0/en/os/i386/redhat/rpms/binutils-2.10.0.18-1.i386.rpm
7. run it as follows : rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.10.0.18-1.i386.rpm
8. change to /proc/sys/kernel
9. type cat sem
10. you will get : 250 32000 32 128
 250 => SEMMSL
 32000 => SEMMNS
 32 => SEMOPM
 128 => SEMMNI
11. you need to have the SEMOPM to be 128 , to do so , locate the file called sem open it replace the value of 32 with 128
12. type again cat sem to be sure of taking the required effect
13. after the installation ends just re-install the 7.2 utils again as follows :
14. rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.11.90.0.8-9.i386.rpm
15. you can find the last RPM at the 7.2 CD set
16. after downloading the Oracle files from the net you need to decompress it as follows (one step) :
 zcat linux9i_disk1.cpio.gz | cpio idmv
 zcat linux9i_disk2.cpio.gz | cpio idmv
 zcat linux9i_disk3.cpio.gz | cpio idmv
17. you can decompress them at 2 steps as follows :
 gunzip linux9i_disk1.cpio.gz
 gunzip linux9i_disk2.cpio.gz
 gunzip linux9i_disk3.cpio.gz
 cpio idmv < linux9i_disk1.cpio
 cpio idmv < linux9i_disk2.cpio
 cpio idmv < linux9i_disk3.cpio
18. Now you have 3 directories , have care when Burning them to CD because you need to take care of paths
19. if you have downloaded the files via a Windows machine and have a MKS installed over it you can easily invoke Visual Pax and decompress the files at one go using the GUI program
20. log on to Linux as Root and run commands in the file commands.txt
21. log on as user Oracle to be sure that its created
22. log on as root again
23. get to the directory of /home/oracle
24. enable showing the system files
25. open the file of .bash_profile
26. add the accompanied bash file contents at the end of it to set the environment variables
27. log on as user Oracle
28. open shell and type set and be sure that environment variables are set correctly
29. open shell and change to the cdrom by typing cd /mnt/cdrom => Linux 7.2 is an auto mounting OS so you at no need to mount the CD drive prior to using it and if you need to mount it just type : AS ROOT
 mount t iso9660 /mnt/cdrom /cdrom
 this is surly after creating a directory at / called cdrom
30. Start the installer ( as Oracle User ) by typing ./runinstaller
31. the installer will ask you to run a started script as root , you may open a shell and type su then open Nautilus ( if using Gnome or File manager as super user if using KDE ) and drag the noted file to the shell screen and press enter ,, after it is ended continue with the installer
32. if asked to supply JDK home directory then it is /usr/local/java
33. Unix group Name ( to update Oracle software ) : oinstall
34. Oracle home is : /oracle/9.0.1
35. base directory : /oracle/orainventory
