Cannot cannect to a particular ftp via both Dreamweaver 8 & GoLive CS2
OK, my trouble is a little complicated.
I have two different FTP servers: One is provided by
Dreamhost, another is provided by Startlogic.
Suddenly, it became unable to connect to Startlogic's ftp in
Dreamweaver MX2004. So, I upgraded to 8 in order to see if it works
again. No, it is no longer able to work on ftp connection. My ftp
setting is just correct. By the way, my OS is Windows 2000.
Here's the error message: "The connection to the remote host
has been lost. Click refresh to reconnect."
Then, I click "OK" and I get this error message: "togglinng
the 'Use Passive FTP" check box may help you establish a
connection. Select or de-select the checkbox and click Test to try
again. If the problem persists, check your network setting,
including the local firewall settings on your computer, or consult
your network administrator."
So, I did what the message instructed
Then, I get another long error message: "An FTP error
occurred. - cannot get a remote folder information. Dreamweaver
could not connect to the server. This may be due to one or more of
the following reasons: ...."
On the other hand, there is no problem with Dreamhost ftp. I
have tried to test with different applications such as GoLive CS2
and a generic ftp application. Only Startlogic's ftp does not work
on both Dreamweaver and GoLive, but it works on ta generic ftp
application.
I tried to connect to Startlogic's ftp on a ftp application
from a different computer. It was a success. I have not tested
Dreamweaver and GoLive though.
I have some other accounts of Startlogic's ftp and tried to
test those ftp. None of them worked via Dreamweaver on my computer.
Now, I don't understand why I cannot connect to only
Startlogic's ftp with Dreamweaver 8 & GoLive CS2. Is it my
computer's fault? Is it caused by some bugs on Dreamweaver 8 &
GoLive CS2? I asked Startlogic's tech support but they said that
they could connect to my ftp. I don't have firewall software
installed. My router might have though. My network admin has no
idea why it causes this.
Should I reinstall those Dreamweaver 8 & GoLive CS2
anyway?
Thank you for your help in advance. The answer is always the same. Check your firewall for its
interference.

Centering site Dreamweaver vs GoLive
Hopefully some GoLive guru that is now using Dreamweaver can
help. Tried to recreate the GoLive 7 site in Dreamweaver and found
learning curve is steep. Tried to convert Go Live file to
Dreamweaver but Dreamweaver will not convert GoLive7 only Go Live 8
files. Catch 22.
My problem is that I had created a site using the Go Live
grid and I can get the background image to center with the
inspector but the text does not align in proper center position
over the background when I center the grid in the inspector. Can I
accomplish this in GoLive.
I have tried all GoLive forums and cannot find a resolve.
The link below shows the default left position of the page
but when I try to center the background and grid copy and enter
link they do not properly line up.
http://www.thefidlergroup.com/index.html
Help would be greatly appreciated.> learning curve is steep.
This is an understatement. If you are a typical GL user, you
will need to
understand that DW is very focused on valid HTML and best
practice methods.
If you do not know or are at least comfortable with HTML and
CSS, your going
will be tough.
As an example, the W3 validator finds a number of instances
of invalid code
on your page -
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thefidlergroup.com%2Findex.ht ml
Why should this concern you? Layout issues CAN be caused by
invalid markup
alone. If you know that you built the page with valid
methods, then a
layout issue might be immediately highlighted by using the
validator linked
above. Unfortunately, GL was not so focused on valid code,
and as a result
has left these boogers on your page for you to clean up.
To achieve your desire to have this page centered, you will
need to work a
bit on the CSS. Change this -
to this -
body {
color: black;
background: white
url(images/fidlershell_logo_background.jpg) no-repeat
center top;
Then in the HTML, change this -
<table width="1195" border="0" cellspacing="0"
cellpadding="0" cool
gridx="16" gridy="16" height="837" showgridx showgridy
usegridx usegridy>
to this -
<table width="1195" border="0" cellspacing="0"
cellpadding="0"
style="margin:0 auto;">
and see what happens.

Hello all...I bought CS2 last year with the intent of adding
web design to my print publishing background. I've been working
with GoLive for several months and find the program inconsistant
and that it operates in a strange manner. I understand that print
and web are two different beasts, but I am having one rotten time
getting to understand GL. It's so frustrating that I'm tempted to
just go to straight code.
I understand Dreamweaver is much different than GL, but
should I be considering DW instead? I am seriously rethinking
whether I should continue with GL or scrap it, spend even more
money and buy something else. Please, any suggesitons would help.
Sincerely,
WordmanWe'll see what happens when CS3 comes out. Maybe Adobe throws
a CS3 version of GoLive in the box, and includes a Dreamweaver
version too, with most of the new features being DW only. I still
believe Dreamweaver is a safer bet to put your effort and time
into. I started with GoLive when it was not even Adobe owned.
GoLive was the company name, and CyberStudio was the product name.
It was a Mac-only product, and very, very cool. This was back in
the early to mid 90's. It took until 2001 when a client of mine
needed the check in/check out feature badly. Dreamweaver could do
it builtin, GL could not. So I've used both ever since. I didn't
build one new site in 2006 with GoLive. After using both, I really
do think DW is the way to go. If you can wait a few months for CS3
to come out, then you will get it "free" so to speak.
On a side note, GoLive has always done some weird things to
my sites, to boring to go into here, but Dreamweaver has been very,
very predictable and stable. Adding my own code into the pages is
flawless, finding and installing extensions and extra add-ons has
been much easier, and overall the sites feel more streamlined. How
GL handles tables is much, much easier, but I now find myself using
few tables anymore because of CSS, so I haven't missed those
features too much. One thing I really like is DW creates far less
folders and files for a site structure. A GoLive site might have 3
or 4 folders, and a .site file, and DW has none of that, it's all
contained within the root - Templates and all. Open the index page
of a site, and the whole thing is ready to go.
About why there is a GL at all? Well, Macromedia really was
coming on strong before Adobe gobbled them up. Flash ruled,
Dreamweaver ruled, and Adobe's versions of Flash and DW just did
not rule. It was obvious to me why they bought DW, as mentioned
above, it's to get Flash. If anyone truly believes GoLive has a
future beyond CS3, I think they will be saddened. Adobe needs 2 web
programs like it needs 2 photoshops. One of them is history, and to
me, it's going to be GoLive. I hope deep down that they come up
with a new version of DW that incorporates some of the workflow of
GL and create one final program that I can sink my teeth
into. -
I can't remember if it was Dreamweaver or Golive...
I remember a tool that allowed me to layout a web
site...graphically....I could create a index.html file...then
about.html, contact.html, services.html....link the structure of
the files together....such as all files are subordinate to
index.html...then push OK somewhere and all the files would be
created. Also you could print out the layout/structure of the
website.
Is there such a capability in CS3 DW? I am using Leopard on a
MAC.
Thanks, --bill> Is there such a capability in CS3 DW?

I am going to build my website for my small mom and pop
business. I have been using frontpage 03.
Most of my software is adobe; lightroom, photoshopCS2, soon
to be CS3, and premiere pro. I was going to buy golive, but after
adobe did not give any attention to golive during the new launch
suites for 2007, this has given me pause to wait.
I am told that dreamweaver is more difficult to learn than
golive. So............I know I love to "fiddle" with and build my
personal web pages for myself, and myself only, and soon I will
build a web site for my growing photography business (now it is
part time).
So I am requesting some straight information on the the
leaning curve with dreamweaver verses golive. I am not a techie nor
am I "get it" fast kind of guy, so I am in a "digital
fog"..............
Thank anyone for some help
KenThere are other options if you want to stay in a GUI. In
Windows, there's
NetObjects Fusion and on the Mac, there's Freeway. Both do a
great job of
hiding the code. They're code creation tools, so you don't
see the HTML
until the page is published.

Upgrading GoLive to Dreamweaver
I just upgraded to Dreamweaver from GoLive. The Dreamweaver
readme file tells me to place the included gl2dw folder into the
GoLive "extend scripts" folder in order to get Dreamweaver to "see"
my old golive file structures. OK I did that, then checked the
script in GoLive. When i restart GoLive, I get the message that
GL2DW only runs on GoLive 8 or better. My version is 7.0.2. So it
doesn't work.
Can someone explain what gl2dw is supposed to do, and what I
may need to do by hand, since clearly, this script is not going
work for me? I seem to intuit OK how everything works in
Dreamweaver., especially after viewing the video lessons. I got the
file box to show my hard drive's website folder structure, and then
set up the remote file structure to show my ftp site OK. So is that
what the script does? I hate to be missing something essential, and
hit a brick wall without knowing what the solution is.By "thow it in a folder" and
"throw it up there" do you mean a different
folder than the client site root folder? Is the goal to put the
entire root folder inside another folder called
"nameoflcient" without the word
"site"? Do I then set the button link to
"www.yoursite.com/nameofclient" and ftp to the
same location as my business site? Will this be sufficient to find
the index.html file in the folder? Can you clarify? -
Dreamweaver Feature Requests :: From GoLive Users
Those of us who have loved GoLive seem to also love the format of this forum. Rather than letting this forum die, I thought maybe it could be put to good use by us contributing ideas and what we like best about GoLive's UI, and other tools, for future versions of Dreamweaver.
LindaWell I'll give my 2 Cents.
Adobe, if GoLive was such a bad application, then months after it's demise, why are there still calls to revive it in some way. I am also like Linda, using Dreamweaver and GoLive, but there's really no comparison. I find Dreamweaver, confusing, has a very poor UI, and annoying overall. GoLive on the other hand was and is a pleasure to use.
I have tried the Dreamweaver 4 beta and IMO it's not any better than 3. IMO, what Adobe has done is appeal to the coders and programmers out there rather than those of us who like to "Design" websites. Most if not all of the Moderators in the Adobe Dreamweaver forum say they don't design the websites themselves, but give their ideas to a designer and let them design the look of the website. I read that and almost fell over laughing. It's obvious most of them are not artists but coders and programmers.
DW arrived on the scene before Golive and IMO Adobe saw that 95% of the people were using Dreamweaver and so Adobe knew if they dropped Dreamweaver in favor of GoLive that they would be losing 95% of market share and a lot of $$$ so IMO they went with that safe choice, and disregarded the actual features, ease of use and benefits of GoLive.
IMO if you were to put Dreamweaver 3 up against GoLive CS there wouldn't be any competition. GoLive would win hands down.
Yes, I would support any effort made to get GoLive into development again, either by Adobe (not likely) or if someone (a company or individual) could either buy it or develop a whole new application that was very similar.
I don't even think anyone of significance at Adobe ever darkens these parts do they?
Hope something works out because Dreamweaver obviously isn't for a lot of us.
Thanks -
DreamWeaver CS4 trial installation fails
I've got a GoLive9 full Version from my provider which I
could not install.
So I downloaded the german Dreamweaver CS4 Trial. I deleted
everything on my drives AND registry looking bit like
"dreamweaver"and "golive". Did use utilities and searched by hand.
I started the setup.exe from the download. Unzipping seemed to
work. I found the folder on the desktop (731 MB (766.547.466 Bytes)
// (19.569 Files / 158 folders). The istallation started
automaticly. After that the behavior is exactly the same for
GoLive9 and CS4: Setup starts "initialisation", comes to about 90%.
For a very short time a screen pops up (I cannot catch it, even
with a CamCorder in front of the sceen) and the installation
freezes. I have to kill the process manually.
None of the other posts here fits to this problem. Anything I
can check or information I could give (log-files if existing ?)

KurtMicrosoft Windows XP Professional v 5.1 build 2600 ( I guess this is the initial release and first build of Professional version.)
This is a legimated authentic copy but not SP1, SP2 or SP3.
Dreamweaver CS4 requires a minimum of Windows XP SP2: http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/systemreqs/. -
I've recently switched to Dreamweaver from GoLive and converted a large site that used GoLive templates. Everything seemed OK until I realized that the title of each page in the converted site started with "<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="docTitle" -->"
Looking at the source code for the template I found this:
"<title><!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="docTitle" -->PAGE TITLE<!-- InstanceEndEditable --></title>"
The problem seemed obvious--the template code being inside the title tags--so I went into the template and changed the code to:
"<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="docTitle" --><title>PAGE TITLE</title><!-- TemplateEndEditable -->"
Unfortunately this results in the following (partial code for the head section):
"<head>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" />
</head><!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="docTitle" -->PAGE TITLE<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
<link href="../favicon.ico" rel="shortcut icon" />"
Dreamweaver has moved the ending head tag way out of position (the head section ends many lines below this) and has stripped out the title tags all together. The resulting page does not display properly as various links, such as CSS files, are outside of the head section.
If I return to the template and change the code back to what it was originally it will fix the problem with the misaligned head tag, but I still have the original issue of having template code in the document title. Anyone have any suggestions? After realizing that another of my GoLive converted sites suffered from the same title problems, I started investigating some more and came up with the following odd workaround/solution:
1. Removed the template regions and title tag from the template
2. Updated pages based on template
3. When asked what to do about content that was no longer in a defined region I moved it to "Nowhere"
4. Opened new pages and confirmed that they did not have titles
5. Realized that Dreamweaver had added the template regions and title tags back into the template, but had put them in AFTER the end of the head section.
6. Moved the template region and title tags back into the head section
7. Updated pages based on template.
8. Manually reentered the titles for pages based on template
This was a workable solution for a small that I used as a test (only 8 pages based off of one template), but I have a site with hundreds of template-based pages that this method will obviously not work well with. -
In & Out Links in Dreamweaver?
I switched to Dreamweaver from GoLive this year, and I have
to say I'm unimpressed with Dreamweaver's site management features
in comparison to GoLive's.
How can I tell which pages in my site are linked to a
particular file? GoLive had a very hand "In & Out LInks"
palette that told you not only which files the selected file
pointed to but which files pointed TO the selected file. I used it
constantly. In Dreamweaver, I can't seem to find a way to view
which pages in my site link TO a selected file. The whole "site
map" thing is stupid. It requires me to set a particular file as
the home page in the site to do that.
Please help!> In & Out LInks
Handy, I agree.
> The whole "site map" thing is stupid.
Beyond that....
Please suggest the In 'n Out thing to the dev team -

Hi,
I've just finished making a website for fun, which looks great thanks to Flash and Dreamweaver!
Anyway, I was thinking of using it as a desktop background (Windows XP active desktop web page), and linking things like my folders and files to
my tabs, be alot cooler than a boring background =).
I've used DesktopX and similar shells which are great but they dont support swf.
So, is it possible to link say My Computer to a button in Dreamweaver or Flash?
Thanks!!!

Ever since the merge of Adobe and Macromedia, I've been
wondering what the future of Dreamweaver and GoLive will be, will
they eventually become one single product? Or will dreamweaver or
GoLive cease development and only focus on one particular web

I am going to upgrade to Dreamweaver from GoLive. I use a lot of videos on our site. I have the Dreamweaver trial and can not find any way to add MPEG 4 videos to a site. I understand there is something included in the creative suites that allows conversion to flash movies, but I can not afford to buy the creative suite. Is there not a way to use MPEG 4 on Dreamweaver?
Thanks,
GaryMPEG4 is a really huge file size. Not web friendly for general viewing. Conversion to FLV is highly recommended. RIVA Flash encoder is free and does a fairly good job of converting native videos to FLV. There are countless other affordable converters on the web too such as UltraFlash, IMToo, SwishVideo, etc... Do a Google search and you'll find them all.
Another alternative is to use YouTube. Upload your MPEG4 to their server. They convert to Flash and carry the bandwidth for you. Copy & paste your YTube video's <embed code> into your DW pages in code view.

Alternatives To Dreamweaver's Version Control
Are there any free/open-source alternatives to Dreamweaver's
FTP version control? I have too many issues with Dreamweaver
(cumbersome code editor, laggy/slow interface, dangling .LCK files,
random crashes, memory leaks, clunky non-standard file browser) to
make it worth my while to continue using it. (Of course, this is
just personal preference -- other people in my shop don't mind it
at all.) My workplace is currently married to Dreamweavers FTP
interface (_notes folders and whatnot for "locking" files) and I
need to be able to check-out files so that they show up as
checked-out on other people's Dreamweaver installations. Changing
our version control system is out of the question, unfortunately.
I'd love to use SVN. Oh well!
Are there any workable alternatives? I'd appreciate any leads
or ideas you might have. I'm also interested in plug-ins for
open-source development environments like Eclipse.
Thanks in advance!Ahh I see it, but it doesn't exactly tell me whether a
certain file or image
is used or not. I want to do it opposite of what Site Map
Layout is doing.
