Dreamweaver with network homes kills the server

1. Dreamweaver is very slow to open on both our laptops and
desktops. The start page menu pops up, but the color-wheel cursor
continues to spin for between one and two minutes before the user
is able to start working in Dreamweaver. If one disables the start
screen, it doesn't happen, but it definitely feels like a bug.
2. Dreamweaver also keeps slowing down our entire server.
We've discovered that Dreamweaver is writing temp files to the
server under ... Library/Application Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver
9/Configuration/temp. This happens when multiple
users have Dreamweaver open, and slows down logins and such
for everyone, even users who do not have Dreamweaver open.
I tried redirecting the temp folder locally, but it did not
improve performance.

Hi jdobbie,
I'm just starting to use dreamweaver on the mac, however your
analysis
puzzles me.
Temp files shouldn't have much negative effect on logins, why
do you think
this is causing the slowdowns?
Are your users logging on to the server via Remote Desktop or
VNC or have
you redirected a local folder to a network location?
One thing that may impact network performance is dreamweaver
refreshing the
remote site, or the local site when it's root is on the
network.

  • Network Users with network homes not really working for me

    I have with great pain setup a OS X Lion server on a Mac Mini that was supposed to be my central server to have 4 network users accounts and all the users data is stored on an external disk array with mounted network homes to the 2 iMacs and 2 Macbooks I have in my home.
    I have gotten it all working and all my Macs are joined to the Open Directory and each User can login as a network users on any of the Macs and get their files via mounted home directory from the server. The home directories on the server are backed up with Time Machine.
    I have found the following items that do not work proberly:
    1) Desktop backgrounds settings are just lost sometimes for whatever reason. Desktop background goes to default and you need to manually set back to the one you have selected. This happen mostly if users have their own desktop pictures.
    2) Keychain get's screwed up. The user often get the "Keychain doesn't exist to store ..." message and need to select to reset the keychain. Anything I have tried from "Keychain First Aid" to removing and have a new one created doesn't fix the problem. It keeps on coming back.
    3) iTunes Storage and AppStore are getting confused about authorized computers. This is because a user logs in from another computer and then iTunes store would tell the user this computer hasn't been authorized to play the purchase music. Same happens with iPhone apps from the AppStore. Apparently those two stores are not setup to hanlde network users proberly.
    4) Permission issues happen sometimes in Application like iPhoto where it would complain not being able to see photos or cannot add new photos to the library. Need to run a permission repair on the Iphoto Library to fix this.
    5) One critical one is that it's not really possible to restore files from Time Machine. The Time Machine backup is done on the server by an administrator account directly backing up the user directories. When you go into Time Machine on the server even the admin can drill down into the user directories so no restore possible. The individual users have no idea that there was ever a Time Machine backup done as Time Machine is not setup in their accounts on the individual Macs. This prevents any possible restore.
    I reckon that many of the problems are related to having only one location for ~/Library as the individual Macs are writing their user related settings into this directory in a central location. So what happens is when something on iMac 1 and then I log in on iMac 2 that might not exactly match this Macs config and it get's confused throwing one of the above erors.
    Trouble is witth central network home directory the way they mounted i can't exclude the ~/Library folder. The only option I can see is mobile account because I have seen in the preferences that when they sync the handle Library items differently.
    Does anybody have any experience out there with this sort of thing and can advise what's the best way forward?
    If i can't resolve this I'll go back to have network users with local home directories on each Mac and just setup for each user a network share to which they copy files if they want them available on other Macs. Not as nice but at least it works!
    As a said note I did this to make things easier but it has up to now cost me trouble then i had before!

    Haven't heard anything from anybody so probably to daunting a topic ...
    I have now moved on to try Portable Home Directories (PHD) and syncing ... what a disaster!
    First it took  me ages to get this right as the way the home directores are mounted on the clients from the server it's just weired which has to do with how AFP mounts are implemented. Since one AFP mount can't be mounted by several users on the same system they use a workaround of mounting it to a temp directory and then linking it back to where it should be. Of course this causes major problems.
    Okay it kind of worked so let's move on to syncing PHD. First of all on initial creation it only sync a small portion of the directory that should be okay but on some of my accounts it never went passed this stage. It said it's all synced but it only had synced the first 10% or so of the data. I wasn't able to make it sync anymore.
    On other accounts it correctly synced all the data down, or so I thought. Apparently a few sync session back and forth and 50-60% of the data was gone. On further investigation it turned out to be iTunes and iPhoto libraries. Turns out does don't sync probably via Home Sync!!!
    Apple product is not able to probably syncing Apple specific library files!!!!
    So here my warning to everybody: DO NOT USE PHD and HOME SYNC to sync your data as you will lose stuff if you have iTunes and/or iPhoto libraries with Lion OS X Server!!!
    The whole Lion Server experience has been a disaster for me. Now I have a server that does file sharing and time machine backup sharing. I can do the same thing with a standard Mac using those services. What's the point of Lion Sever for Home if nothing works proberly?

  • ITunes library keeps disappearing with network home directories&MacBookPro

    I've been using iTunes with network home directories for years. My wife & I have network home directories on our Macs and we can log into any of our Macs with our network home directories. The actual iTunes Music folder is also on the network server and shared between our user accounts.
    This has always worked fine with my G4 cube, my PowerMac G5 and my PowerBook. As long as I only open iTunes on one machine at a time, I can open it on any of my machines and everything works great.
    However, with my new MacBook Pro, my library keeps disappearing and I have to reimport it from the XML file every couple of days. Seems to erase my iPod Shuffle too at the same time (maybe it's triggered by plugging in my iPod).
    Any ideas? Is there an endian issue with the library?
    I can't figure out how to get any feedback on what's happening. Is there a debug log file I can enable?
    PowerMac G5, PowerBook, MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    I've got one better...I imported all my CDs onto iTunes. Then I upgraded. Here is what happened...All songs remained listed, however when I would click onto a song, a ! mark appears in front of the check mark and a window pops up saying "song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Well this occurred on 75% of my songs. Apple info led me to believe I could use my iPod as a hard drive. So I tried hooking up the pod to my computer. Well, from 3688 songs, I was down to just over 200, so I guess that is an even higher percentage.
    What iTunes did was made a folder in "my music" with years 1955 to 2007. In those different years folders are the CDs that were released in that year. They have to be opened, each individual song, and re entered to itunes. All this I discovered on my own. No help from Apple. Not to mention what a royal pain in the *** process, which I am still in the process of doing. And don't even get me started with Artwork

  • Using Illustrator with Network home users

    We have approx 300 macs all binding to an open directory server, all users log in with network home folders.
    We have InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator installed locally on all machines.
    InDesign and Photoshop launch fine, but Illustrator bounces in the dock for 20 seconds, then does nothing, causing the user to force quit.
    I have done all the normal things, preferences, permissions, new user created etc.
    A local account, (non-admin, or admin) works fine. I am NOT going to go around to 300 systems and create and manage a local account just so people can use Illustrator, that is insane, so.. what are the alternatives?
    Does Illustrator have a problem with network mounted preferences? Because that is the only part I can see as affecting this.
    Can you make Illustrator use a local TEMP or /tmp folder for preferences?
    Do I just have to let everyone keep using Quark 8 forever? (Not likely)
    Thanks in advance.

    This definitely sounds like something you might want to take up with Adobe Customer Support. (In case you didn't know, the people here are just other users, like yourself).
    If your company bought 300+ licenses, I'm sure they'd be willing to help.
    Will they be able to solve the problem? Well, that's a different issue altogether.

  • I am getting the error "We're sorry we cannot complete your request on the iTunes store at this time. Please try again later." on both my iPhone and iTunes on my computer. What is wrong with iTunes? Is the server down???

    I am getting the error "We're sorry we cannot complete your request on the iTunes store at this time. Please try again later." on both my iPhone and iTunes on my computer. What is wrong with iTunes? Is the server down or what? I need to download some things and update some apps...

    I've been getting the same message for like an hour now.  Since everything was working fine a few hours ago, and nothing changed on my end before it stopped working, I'm guessing it's something on Apple's end.  They probably already know about it by now, and are hopefully working on fixing it, so there's probably not much we can do but wait for them to fix it.

  • "The server responded with an error. The server is currently unreachable or the connection was blocked"

    Hi, since this morning i receive this message on my Mac Air (10.8.5) when i open iCal (which is synced through iCloud): "The server responded with an error. The server is currently unreachable or the connection was blocked". You know what it can be?
    Thanks for your help!

    Are you behind a firewall at work or elsewhere?  Does you calendar sync with some other system like google (could be the google server is not responding)?  All we know from the message is that your mac cannot reach the server.  Maybe try later.  Are you using wifi or have an ethernet connection to the router?

  • How to save HTML file with images present in the server to local machine

    Hi all
    In my application i have a option for the user to save HTML files with images present in the server. The HTML file is getting saved but the images are not being saved.
    The code i am using is below :-
    l
                        File fname = new File(filePath);
                        if(!fname.exists())                return;
                        FileInputStream istr = null;
                        OutputStream ostr = null;
                        response.setContentType("application/"+format);
                        response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=\"" + fname.getName() + "\";");
                        try {
                             istr = new FileInputStream(fname);
                             ostr = response.getOutputStream();

                             while( (curByte=istr.read()) !=-1)
                                  ostr.write(curByte);
                             ostr.flush();
    Can anyone suggest what i need to do
    regards

    The client should probably parse the html that comes down, and look for <img> links, and request those of the server as well.

  • Issue with Network Home Users on Mountain Lion ( connecting to Lion Server)

    I have been forced to setup a network user on a new mac running mountain lion because their old mac just went pop, and have run into multiple issues that I have narrowed down to them being a Network User on Mountain Lion.
    1. Contacts get deleted whenever you open Mail. Mail will hang on fist launch until all your contacts in Contacts (I hate the new names! ) get deleted, console shows that the location for the address book database is invalid, seems to be an issue with ~/Library/Containers/apple.mail.com folder
    2. Word documents with images in the background do not display correctly, there is a giant red cross through the document

  • BlazeDS with WAS 6.1 streaming channel killing the server?

    Hi,
    We are experiencing a strange issue with WAS (websphere server) 6.1 with BlazeDS
    after a while severe performance degrades and then system hungs shortly after
    Some prelimenary observations:
    we are seeing following errors in Server Log:
    [6/22/10 16:41:26:828 EDT] 000000b0 ThreadMonitor W   WSVR0605W: Thread "WebContainer : 3-in-streaming-mode" (0000002a) has been active for 656127 milliseconds and may be hung.  There is/are 1 thread(s) in total in the server that may be hung.
    [6/22/10 16:48:00:144 EDT] 000000b1 ThreadMonitor W   WSVR0605W: Thread "WebContainer : 0" (00000027) has been active for 753457 milliseconds and may be hung.  There is/are 2 thread(s) in total in the server that may be hung.
    We do see that there is always one active connection maintained betweeb browser and server(which is connected to ):
    messagebroker/streamingamf
    and  that keeps sending keep-alive signals , now is this a reason we are getting hung messages? can we safely ingore it?
    basically can streaming chanell cause that error? and what would be suggestions tweaks/modifications to fix that issue?
    our destination config :
    <destination id="alerts-Push-jms" >
            <properties>
                <jms>
                    <destination-type>Topic</destination-type>
                    <message-type>javax.jms.TextMessage</message-type>
                    <connection-factory>jms/***JMSTopicConnectionFactory</connection-factory>
                    <destination-jndi-name>jms/AlertEventingTopic</destination-jndi-name>
                    <delivery-mode>PERSISTENT</delivery-mode>
                    <message-priority>DEFAULT_PRIORITY</message-priority>
                    <preserve-jms-headers>"true"</preserve-jms-headers>
                    <acknowledge-mode>AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE</acknowledge-mode>
                    <max-producers>1</max-producers>
                </jms>
            </properties>
            <adapter ref="jms" />
        <channels>
            <channel ref="my-streaming-amf" />
        </channels>
        </destination>

    Actually we did not fix it from WAS perspective, but what we did is ditched a blazeds streaming channel in favor of polling channel,
    that solved the issue.
    it appears that WAS has issues with connections that are Held open for a long time.

  • 10.5.6 Login Items Error with Network Home Directories

    I'm splitting this post off from a previous discussion which can be found here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1835976&tstart=0
    With 10.5.6 our Login Items are not working on client machines that use Network Home Directories. Everything works fine under 10.5.5.
    When the 10.5.6 client logs in, login items with a path directed to the Home/Documents folder cannot be found, and the following error appears in Console:
    "Unable to resolve startup item: status = -35, theURL == NULL = 1"
    I have no problem manually navigating to the Home/Documents folder and opening the login items. Removing and re-adding the login items does not fix the problem. Revert to 10.5.5 and the login items are fine.
    Below is a suspicious error that I see repeated multiple times in Console (viewing "All Messages") on the 10.5.6 clients but not on the 10.5.5 clients:
    Sender:
    loginwindow 34
    Message:
    FolderManager: Failed looking up user domain root; url='file://localhost/Network/Servers/myserver_name.com/Users/my_username/' path =/Network/Servers/myserver_name.com/Users/my_username/ err=-35 uid=0 euid=10790
    I'm sure I could find a work-around by moving the location of my login items or maybe even changing to launchd. However, this error seems to indicate something going on with the 10.5.6 install that might be more serious. I've done some typical troubleshooting: DFA, Repairing Permissions, Clearing Caches, trashing loginwindow and MCX preferences, deleting the /Library/Managed Preferences folder, rechecking DNS on the server (forward and reverse lookup OK).
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

    just to tell you, same thing here - it's nothing special about your setup. it's not a big issue for us as the kernel panic at logout on 10.5.6 is the real killer (no it's NOT JUST FONTS) so our workround is that we're not rolling it out! (staying 10.5.5).
    but on my own test 10.5.6 mac i get exactly the same issue with login items that are in the network home. local apps (font management app, ichat etc in /Applications) OK, but stuff on the mounted home server - nope and a line in the syslog for each item:
    Jan 28 09:25:54 hc04800-bssaht loginwindow[32028]: Unable to resolve startup item: status = -36, theURL == NULL = 1

  • Illustrator crashes before splash screen with networked home dir

    I’m having a problem with deploying Adobe CS6 in my school’s labs. Actually, this problem only affects Illustrator CS6 as all the other applications of the suite are functioning normally.
    Here are some data about our network Environment
    120+ imacs of various models (from late 2007 to early 2013)
    Each mac is bound to 2 directory services (Windows AD and a Mac mini server)
    Authentication is taken care of by the Windows AD server.
    Preferences management and Mac-specific settings are controlled by the Mac server
    Each user (teacher and student) has a remote home directory located on a huge (21 TB) synology NAS
    The address of this home directory is maintained by the windows AD and retrieved at logon
    Users can authenticate with no issues and their home directory is correctly mounted on the Imacs. The applications of the Creative suite (deployed through AAMEE) are all working fine except for Adobe Illustrator CS6.
    Here is the problem
    If a remote user (that is a user with a distant home directory, so pretty much everyone in the school)  launches Illustrator, The application hangs and crashed even before this beautiful brownish splash screen appears on the screen. I can see illustrator in red in the activity monitor an have to kill it manually
    If a local user logs in (that is the local admin or the guest user) Illustrator works fine! (Which tells me that it is not an install or dependency issue)
    In short, It looks like Illustrator does not like users whose home directory is not stored on the local machine.
    Has anyone run into a similar issue?  Is this documented somewhere? Are there some preferences I need to customise to make Illustrator work with remote users? Will it be naturally solved when I’ll deploy Illustrator CC in a month or so?
    In case any Adobe employee read this message, I attache the Crash report as generated by my iMac.
    Any insight on this issue is very much appreciated. I’m stuck with this one...... heeeeeeelp!!
    Thanks and regards from cloudy Belgium!

    I confirm what Serge said.
    We worked on this issue with the Illustrator team and Illustrator just does not work when the home directory of the current user is not on the local drive.
    That being said, it IS possible to make Illustrator work in a Network environment. There are 2 ways to do that.
    1) when binding the MAc to an Active Directory domain, tick the "Force home directory on local drive" checkbox. That will create the home directory of the user on the local drive and Illustrator will work fine. The down side of this method is that if the user switches to another Mac (whith is the case in our school lab) his home directory will be re-created from scratch on the new Mac and all his custom preferences and setting will be lost.
    2) Use the WorkGroup Manager to create a roaming profile. With this method, The home directory of the user is copied over from the network location on the local drive at logon. As far as Illustrator is concerned, The home folder is then local and everything works as expected. You can have the local home folder be synchronized with the remote home folder at logout (or even at regular intervals during the session) so that the custom preferences and settings of the user does follow him from Mac to Mac
    The only case where Illustrator does not work is when the home directory is mounted as a remote folder. That configuration prevents Illustrator from openning.

  • Final Cut Pro with Network Home Directories

    Hi,
    I have been tasked with setting up a Mac network primarily for use with FCP. The main requirement is that the user profiles are roaming as users will move from desk to desk, it is a college.
    I have an Xserve with OS X server and Open Directory configured. I have configured the network home directories and have successfully logged in with different users.
    My questions is regarding Final Cut. What is the best way to configure Final Cut to reduce the amount of network traffic?
    I have redirected the users cache folder to the local Mac and configured the scratch disc to a local hard drive. Are there any of tips that someone with a similar setup can recommend?
    Thanks

    Most schools end up using ext HDs. Each student has their own firewire HD with All the fcp capture, scratch etc docs on it.

  • Aperture 2 Thinks Referenced Images are Offline with Network Home Directory

    Aperture thinks my Home directory is offline, but it's not. My Home directory is on a Mac OS X Server on the LAN (i.e., not on the machine in front of me that I run Aperture 2 on). I'm able to import images from my Nikon D200 in RAW/NEF format using Aperture 2, and write them to my Network Home directory (again, on the Mac OS X Server across the LAN) with no problem. Images are added to Aperture Library as REFERENCED images. Actual image files and Aperture Library are within the Pictures folder in my Network Home directory (on the OS X Server across the LAN). Previews and images show up fine initially. However, after importing and quitting, the next launch of Aperture 2 shows those same imported/referenced images as being offline (i.e., alias badge with red strike-thru). No way to get Aperture 2 to recognize that these image files are really ONLINE, not off.
    Tried to re-establish the link from Aperture to each image file using File->Manage Referenced Images..., but that corrupted something. Image becomes red slate with "Unsupported Image Format" message, and image preview goes blank/gray on next Aperture 2 launch.
    Previous version of Aperture (v1.5.?) did not have this problem.

    Thanks for the replies (in triplicate! from grommet). More information:
    REFERENCED images that were imported earlier (using Aperture v1.5.x) show up ON-LINE in Aperture 2 (i.e., all is OK with the earlier images; referenced image badge has no red strike-thru).
    The images that were imported more recently--all with Aperture 2--continue to show the referenced image badge with the red strike-thru, indicating Aperture thinks they're OFF-LINE (even though they're not). This makes it impossible to edit or use any of the more recent images that were imported with Aperture 2.
    Here's the kicker: the more recent images imported with Aperture 2 and indicated as being OFF-LINE are stored in the SAME general file location as the earlier images that were imported with Aperture v1.5.x and are indicated as being ON-LINE!
    My Home Directory is on a Mac OS X Server across the LAN.
    Aperture Library is at: ~/Pictures/
    Earlier images are at: ~/Pictures/Digital Photos/Roll-000001/1999-05-26-0001.NEF
    Recent images are at: ~/Pictures/Digital Photos/Roll-000107/2008-04-17-0001.NEF
    Clearly a bug with Aperture 2. I've filed feedback with Apple. Hope to heck this bug is not overlooked in next incremental release. I'm stuck/dead in the water without a fix.
