Drive bay fan question

I'm pretty new to the g5 so this might be a dumb question.
Several times a minute the drive bay fan speeds up to around 2500rpm for about 10 seconds and then goes back down to 1000rpm. when this happens, istat shows the drive bay temp jumping from 32c to around 110c and then back down. Seems like a big temp jump in a matter of a few seconds. Hard drive reads a constant temp of 38c. Happens wether the cpus are idle or not. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Working in a quiet room it's kind of annoying.
Thank you mac gods
Jeff

Hi-
Replacing the sensor looks to be fairly easy.
Remove the hard drives, pry the board from the top of the case, unplug the cable from the logic board, and thread the cable out.
Install is the reverse, with two sided tape needed to attach the new sensor board to the tower top.
What I am unsure of, is whether or not Thermal calibration is necessary after this.
I believe that it won't be necessary, but it is a possibility.
If it were necessary, finding a copy of the Apple Service Disc (ASD) 2.5.7 would be necessary.
It is out there, so not a big worry......
The fans should be fine, as most fans are rated at 2,000-5,000 RPM for 60,000 or more hours.

  • Drive Bay Fan

    Hi,
I have a dual 1.8 G5 produced in July of 2004. Recently I noted an oscillating whistle sound coming from the computer, not too loud, and with my handy stethoscope localized it to the Drive Bay Fan. With Hardware monitor the drive bay fan runs constantly at 1000 rpm, which is right, so no problem there. A bad bearing I suppose. So I would like to get a new fan and replace it. Consulting various parts outlets and their diagrams of the G5, none of them show or list a 'drive bay fan'. There is a PCI fan, which is the one paired with the speaker in front. The drive bay fan is at the top of the machine (in the drive bay), in the section where the optical drive and the hard drives are located.
Does anyone know anything about this?
    Thanks, Ray

I can't even find the drive bay fan in the service manual. Nothing in the parts list. ??
You might try calling Heartland Business Systems and ask for the Apple service department. They may be able to help you out.

  • Drive Bay Fan Slowly Spins Up

I Do music , Its noisy , so it really gets annoying... It never used to do this.
Information Using iStat pro , shows my drive bay fan to get faster and faster, eventually over 3000rpm.., yet the temperature remains Solid at 33 degrees C. Is there a Software fix for this ?

I used to get this occasionaly when I did repairs on these machines. It is one of two things, either you may have a problem with your logic board, or you may just need a thermal calibration. The thermal calibration can be done using the Apple ASD disks they have at the apple repair facilities (ie apple store or Service center). I think this may solve your issue. Good luck

  • Drive bay fan speed

    hi all
my drive bay fan speed is way above the rest is this a problem on the way ?
    cpu a intake 365 rpm
    cpu b intake 355 rpm
    cpu a exhaust 373 rpm
    cpu b exhaust 367 rpm
    DRIVE BAY 1000 rpm
    slots 76 rpm
    backside 51 rpm
all the fan speeds move up and down apart from drive bay that stays put at 1000rpm
    g5 2ghz

Sitting here on a cool, cloudy day down here in Paradise, I am seeing the CPU fans "idling" between 300 and 450, only running up into the 1-2K ranges if for some reason the CPU starts running up in usage. Drive bay is a constant 1K, slot is 127 and backside is 51.
What's funny is popping the dashboard causes a run-up for about 4-5 seconds, then things calm back down.
Of course, a couple of weeks ago, those numbers were much higher, but then again, ambient was up maybe 15° F.

  • Drive bay fans high rpm and whine.

High RPMs and a whining noise (i.e. fan noise) with iStat Pro widget displaying high (2,700+ rpms) for my drive bay.
I see that on my G5 one of the fans is located so that I can not blast it with canned air so as to rid it of dust build up... which is probably why there is a low decibel but high pitched noise when the drive bay fans rev up.
Any ideas on how to get to it without having to completely take my tower apart?
I've had my Energy system preference set to 'Highest' for a long time (since I read that overall this can prevent fan rpms from going extremely high) and it seems to have been okay.
But I'm guessing that over the years this one fan... which can not be blown off... has accumulated lots of dust that is causing the problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    "I've tried to monitor Console....."
Activity Monitor (AM--in Applications > Utilities) is the better reporter of what's causing excessive fan activity as it calculates the CPU usage of each process. If you have not launched AM before, its default settings will not show enough detail to help. However, all you need to do to get a full picture of the load on your processor is to change AM's "Show" option from "My Processes" to "All Processes." Once changed, that setting is retained. Looks like this:
Others are reporting heating issues and short battery runtime after upgrading to 10.6.8. They all had Parallels emulation software installed. If you use Parallels, see this:
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/111541
    It could be your culprit.

  • How to replace hard drive bay fan?

The fan in my G5 tower dual 1.8 Ghz in the top bay - optical/hard drive bay - has started to make noise. I bought a replacement, but I don't see any way to get the old one out. It sits in a little depression in the bay floor, and even if I got out the 3 screws holding it in place, it won't tilt far enough front or back to slide out.
Anyone know of any write-up anywhere about how to replace this fan assembly?

Those two fans (media bay fans) are only given a mention in the "official" service manual.
The drive fan and blower located between the optical and hard drives cannot be
replaced. You must replace the enclosure for these two parts.
Does this mean the "entire" enclosure, as in the tower, or just an enclosure for the fans held to the tray of the media bay?
    I don't know.
Maybe someone who has done this can offer advice, but it seems that there is a need for someone to write a manual for that procedure.

  • Powermac g5 7,3 drive bay fan: 2fan/4/7: drive bay error

    Hello
I have a problem with my G5 Powermac. It is an G5 dual 2x2Ghz late 2004 7,3. 5 Gb. ram. Running Leopard. I am in a real trouble
A week ago, the system showed the black transparent screen of critic error ("press the power button for several seconds...") I started the system again and showed problems
I ran the hardware test disc. It showed "2fan/4/7: drive bay" error
Then I replaced the battery for a new one, then I reset the PMU and PRAM
Computer turned on. 15 min of normal use. It showed the error screen again.
Every time I reset the PMU, the fan works, but now it gets stopped in the gray window, and the apple logo is replaced by the "forbidden" icon
It´s a very complicated situation to replace this fan, because you have to disassemble the whole main board to replace the fan in the top floor (the drive bay) and I am not sure that it is a problem of the fan (plus, you have to find a second hand part, it is discontinued) and I think I could "hurt" the computer trying to replace it by my self
Sorry for my poor english. I´m from Spain
    Any help will be appreciated
    Thank You

I tried to boot it on safe mode this morning. It showed the forbidden icon on gray screen at startup. I waited for a while and tried again in normal mode. Booted perfectly and showed me the log about the crash. I place it here, but I can't give it format because I write from my iPod and it doesn't show the tools, only the text box:

I downloaded istat pro and installed it. Temperature is fine (51 top in both processors) rpm is right in all the fans BUT the drive bay rpm fan is constant: 1000 rpm without any variation
After 15 minutes, it freezes. No response. I only plugged the monitor and the keyboard and mouse (with cords. I stopped using the magic mouse since the problem appeared and the computer does not have Bluetooth included, I use an USB dongle that now is unplugged)
That's all the news for now

  • Hard drive and Fan questions

Just got this a few weeks ago and the fan seems to be going on...then off every few minutes. I open speedfan and it shows Temp1 (most likely the GPU) at 104F then when he fan comes on it goes to 126F then the fans go off and its back down to 104F. And the hard drive makes a clicking type noise every so often. Normal? I'm trying to record the sound.

I am interested in buying a MBP. But being an XP user
i am probably going to use Boot Camp or parralels. So
first question: I have to buy an external Hard Drive,
but what is a bootable drive and what are its
    advantages?
Its a drive that will allow you to boot the OS;-)
Second, is it possible to store XP on the external
    hard drive?
Yes it has been reported on the web that you can boot into xp from an external HD drive, but the proviso seems to be that you need to have a 5GB NTFS partition on the internal drive.

  • I want to replace the drive bays, quesiton about the connected fans...

Curious to know if the bios will report any faults if I replace either of the 5.25 drive bays, losing the connected fans?  I dont need the ODD, and am thinking of fitting 2x 5.25 drive bay caddies in the top 2 bays.  If so, can these be disabled in the bios, or will the system halt during post awaiting a keyboard input?

    Hello,
I'm assuming you're talking about the TS140? The maximum supported drives on this system is 4. The cooling is the main reason for this. Lenovo does sell an adapter that has a small fan on the back of it to increase airflow inside the system. 5 drives were never validated on this system and if it were, I'm not sure how it would affect the temperature inside the chassis. It may work, but I would be concerned about the airflow / temperature inside the chassis with adding drives without an additional fan.

  • T530 drive bay questions

I friend of mine just upgraded his old laptop from standard HDD to SSD drive and I was super impressed by the load time going from about 60 seconds to 10.  So I'm planning for an eventual upgrade for my T530 to do the same maybe a few months from now.
I believe the T530 is Sata III and the Crucial site says the m4 256GB drive with 6Gb speed is compatible, so I think that would fit the bill perfectly.
Since I do not currently have the laptop with me right now, I'm trying to read spec docs and getting a bit confused.  Does the T530 have two drive bays?  I think yes, one regular and one Ultrabay.  If so, are they both capable of the same speed?  I would think yes.
If so, I was thinking I would upgrade to the m4 SSD for the primary drive and utilize the 7200rpm factory drive in the Ultrabay slot or would that not be possible?  If that is possible, would having the two drives in there result in a noticable decrease in battery life?
If that is not possible, my plan would be to just install the SSD as the primary and put the existing 7200rpm drive into an external enclosure and utilize it for backups or data storage.  I'll need to figure out the best way to get the OS transferred between drives, but I've read a few posts on that here, so seems doable.
Thanks ahead of time for any info.

    dudeman135 wrote:
Edit:  Actually looking at the link on ebay from above, that adapter says Sata II.  I will search a bit and see if I find anything about a similar Sata III adapter while I wait for more responses.
The official Lenovo description of the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (FRU 43N3412 for 9.5mm and 0A65623 for 12.7mm) doesn't indicate what SATA version it supports either. All it says is that it supports HDs and SSDs. (The info for the new 12.7mm FRU comes from marketing materials that were published when the Tx30 series was launched.)
In any case, standard usage would have the SSD as the primary device in the main HD/SSD bay and the original HD in the UltraBay adapter. The SSD would run the OS and main applications using SATA-III. Presumably the HD would be used for less speed critical stuff like large data store and backups so whether it can handle SATA-III data transfer speeds is probably not particularly important. Even SATA-II is far faster than USB 2.0 and probably also faster than USB 3.0 so the UltraBay should be both faster and better integrated than an external USB enclosure.
P.S. Anyone know if there's an external enclosure for the DVD drive that came out of the UltraBay? I'd rather have my HD in the UltraBay and be able to USB connect the DVD drive if, as and when (rarely) I should need it.

  • Which drive bay for an SSD as system drive?

Hey people. I just bought a 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 with 8 cores at 2.93 GHz. I also bought a 120GB SSD from OWC to use as the system drive. My question is: does it matter which bay I use for the SSD? I'd like to install the SSD in bay 1, because bay 1 seems more appropriate for a system drive, but I don't really know if this matters. Is bay 1 faster or have some kind of priority access to the CPUs? This machine came with a 2TB HDD in each of bays 1 and2. They are configured as a Mirrored RAID Set, but I think I will set them up as 4 TB regular storage. Thanks much for any helpful replies.

Or do I have less efficient air flow?
    Less efficient.
It is obscure, and does not make a LOT of difference, but now some heated air can leak back through that vacant 1/2 inch space and enter the front of the main intake fan in place of a little bit of cooler outside air. With a full 1 inch drive there, the potential leak is plugged by the standard-height 3.5 inch drive.

It appears that you did not understand the post that I made.
If you purchase a high end notebook that has a chipset with sata controllers that support SATA3 then SATA3 devices will run at SATA3 bandwidth. Your notebook is not one that does.
It would not matter which brand you chose.
If you decided to economize and purchase a mainstream notebook, then the issue would still be the same.
Notebooks are not created equally. It is the same with desktop PCs.
That is why each manufacturer has a tiered structure to accomodate the economic means of the target market.

  • Better to use optical bay or drive bay for SSD?

Just bought a mid-2012 MacPro.  Also purchased a Crucial 512GB SSD drive, which I intend to use for a boot drive.  I know that I can install the drive in one of the four slide out drive bays.  From what I can gather, it doesn't matter which bay I use, Mac will boot equally well from any of them.  My question is:  What about the second optical bay?  Is there any advantage to putting the SSD there?  (other than keeping another slot open for HDD?)  Have tried to research this a bit, but the model is brand-new, not a lot of info out there..  Mucho thanks!

The model is not "new" it is just a tiny change in processor options, everything else is unchanged.
To use in standard bays you need to use an adapter to fit. If you put it in the optical bay if you are like me, it will get moved, put on its side, so again, might want to 'tie it down."
But it doesn't matter which location.
With 512GB you probably are going to use it for much more than just the boot drive. Maybe Aperture or other libraries.

  • Installing Windows 7 on a current partition in drive bay 3

    Hi,
I want to install Windows 7 on my 2011 Macpro. I currently have a 300GB partition I'm not using in drive slot 3 of the computer..
When I open bootcamp to prepare the drive, It tells me I cant do anything with this drive apart from format it and then partition.. Is this necessary given the partition is already there, or  can I just use it? If so, do I just need to format it to FAT32, then start the windows 7 installation process outside bootcamp?
Also, it says in the apple bootcamp guide that for Windows 7 to install, the drive with its partition on needs to be in drive slot 1.. Is this true or is it fine where it is?
Finally, it it won't work installing on the about partition, I have a spare 250gb SATA I drive (from an old G5 Powermac).. Can I put this in drive slot 4, format it and install windows on thet? Would it still need to be done through boot camp?
Sorry for all the questions, and thank you in advance,
    Tom

Boot Camp Assistant is limited not very forgiving.
Any drive bay is fine, I use #3 but some find #1 or 2 work better.
Remove all the other drives when you do install.
Formatting and having one drive dedicated is much easier. That way you don't even need Boot Camp Assistant other than to download drivers (you aren't on Lion so no).
BCA prepares the partition table. It expects to have GPT and make the protective MBR active and support booting Windows. That is its only real purpose. And is most often used where Mac OS is present on partition.
The partition you had isn't prepared for Windows. You would hve to turn it into an OS X volume only, small perhaps, then use the rest.
Pull your drives and use the 250GB. But do so with just that drive. If you can't then move it.
there is no such thing as a 2011 Mac Pro workstation, although lately they not only ship with Lion (makng it 2011) but the firmware will no longer support downgrading to 10.6.8, that would be "2011."
If you have and want to really support two cpu sockets, then Pro version. And of course 64-bit. So Windows 7 64-bit SP1 System Builder $129 from 'Egg or Amazon if you still need to buy something, or an MSDN account of course.
