Drive Bay Fan

Hi,
I have a dual 1.8 G5 produced in July of 2004. Recently I noted an oscillating whistle sound coming from the computer, not too loud, and with my handy stethoscope localized it to the Drive Bay Fan. With Hardware monitor the drive bay fan runs constantly at 1000 rpm, which is right, so no problem there. A bad bearing I suppose. So I would like to get a new fan and replace it. Consulting various parts outlets and their diagrams of the G5, none of them show or list a 'drive bay fan'. There is a PCI fan, which is the one paired with the speaker in front. The drive bay fan is at the top of the machine (in the drive bay), in the section where the optical drive and the hard drives are located.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks, Ray

I can't even find the drive bay fan in the service manual. Nothing in the parts list. ??
You might try calling Heartland Business Systems and ask for the Apple service department. They may be able to help you out.

  • Drive Bay Fan Slowly Spins Up

I Do music , Its noisy , so it really gets annoying... It never used to do this.
Information Using iStat pro , shows my drive bay fan to get faster and faster, eventually over 3000rpm.., yet the temperature remains Solid at 33 degrees C. Is there a Software fix for this ?

I used to get this occasionaly when I did repairs on these machines. It is one of two things, either you may have a problem with your logic board, or you may just need a thermal calibration. The thermal calibration can be done using the Apple ASD disks they have at the apple repair facilities (ie apple store or Service center). I think this may solve your issue. Good luck

  • Drive bay fan speed

    hi all
my drive bay fan speed is way above the rest is this a problem on the way ?
    cpu a intake 365 rpm
    cpu b intake 355 rpm
    cpu a exhaust 373 rpm
    cpu b exhaust 367 rpm
    DRIVE BAY 1000 rpm
    slots 76 rpm
    backside 51 rpm
all the fan speeds move up and down apart from drive bay that stays put at 1000rpm
    g5 2ghz

Sitting here on a cool, cloudy day down here in Paradise, I am seeing the CPU fans "idling" between 300 and 450, only running up into the 1-2K ranges if for some reason the CPU starts running up in usage. Drive bay is a constant 1K, slot is 127 and backside is 51.
What's funny is popping the dashboard causes a run-up for about 4-5 seconds, then things calm back down.
Of course, a couple of weeks ago, those numbers were much higher, but then again, ambient was up maybe 15° F.

  • Drive bay fan question

I'm pretty new to the g5 so this might be a dumb question.
Several times a minute the drive bay fan speeds up to around 2500rpm for about 10 seconds and then goes back down to 1000rpm. when this happens, istat shows the drive bay temp jumping from 32c to around 110c and then back down. Seems like a big temp jump in a matter of a few seconds. Hard drive reads a constant temp of 38c. Happens wether the cpus are idle or not. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Working in a quiet room it's kind of annoying.
    Thank you mac gods

    Hi-
Replacing the sensor looks to be fairly easy.
Remove the hard drives, pry the board from the top of the case, unplug the cable from the logic board, and thread the cable out.
Install is the reverse, with two sided tape needed to attach the new sensor board to the tower top.
What I am unsure of, is whether or not Thermal calibration is necessary after this.
I believe that it won't be necessary, but it is a possibility.
If it were necessary, finding a copy of the Apple Service Disc (ASD) 2.5.7 would be necessary.
It is out there, so not a big worry......
The fans should be fine, as most fans are rated at 2,000-5,000 RPM for 60,000 or more hours.

  • Drive bay fans high rpm and whine.

High RPMs and a whining noise (i.e. fan noise) with iStat Pro widget displaying high (2,700+ rpms) for my drive bay.
I see that on my G5 one of the fans is located so that I can not blast it with canned air so as to rid it of dust build up... which is probably why there is a low decibel but high pitched noise when the drive bay fans rev up.
Any ideas on how to get to it without having to completely take my tower apart?
I've had my Energy system preference set to 'Highest' for a long time (since I read that overall this can prevent fan rpms from going extremely high) and it seems to have been okay.
But I'm guessing that over the years this one fan... which can not be blown off... has accumulated lots of dust that is causing the problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    "I've tried to monitor Console....."
Activity Monitor (AM--in Applications > Utilities) is the better reporter of what's causing excessive fan activity as it calculates the CPU usage of each process. If you have not launched AM before, its default settings will not show enough detail to help. However, all you need to do to get a full picture of the load on your processor is to change AM's "Show" option from "My Processes" to "All Processes." Once changed, that setting is retained. Looks like this:
Others are reporting heating issues and short battery runtime after upgrading to 10.6.8. They all had Parallels emulation software installed. If you use Parallels, see this:

    It could be your culprit.

  • How to replace hard drive bay fan?

The fan in my G5 tower dual 1.8 Ghz in the top bay - optical/hard drive bay - has started to make noise. I bought a replacement, but I don't see any way to get the old one out. It sits in a little depression in the bay floor, and even if I got out the 3 screws holding it in place, it won't tilt far enough front or back to slide out.
Anyone know of any write-up anywhere about how to replace this fan assembly?

Those two fans (media bay fans) are only given a mention in the "official" service manual.
The drive fan and blower located between the optical and hard drives cannot be
replaced. You must replace the enclosure for these two parts.
Does this mean the "entire" enclosure, as in the tower, or just an enclosure for the fans held to the tray of the media bay?
    I don't know.
Maybe someone who has done this can offer advice, but it seems that there is a need for someone to write a manual for that procedure.

  • Powermac g5 7,3 drive bay fan: 2fan/4/7: drive bay error

    Hello
I have a problem with my G5 Powermac. It is an G5 dual 2x2Ghz late 2004 7,3. 5 Gb. ram. Running Leopard. I am in a real trouble
A week ago, the system showed the black transparent screen of critic error ("press the power button for several seconds...") I started the system again and showed problems
I ran the hardware test disc. It showed "2fan/4/7: drive bay" error
Then I replaced the battery for a new one, then I reset the PMU and PRAM
Computer turned on. 15 min of normal use. It showed the error screen again.
Every time I reset the PMU, the fan works, but now it gets stopped in the gray window, and the apple logo is replaced by the "forbidden" icon
It´s a very complicated situation to replace this fan, because you have to disassemble the whole main board to replace the fan in the top floor (the drive bay) and I am not sure that it is a problem of the fan (plus, you have to find a second hand part, it is discontinued) and I think I could "hurt" the computer trying to replace it by my self
Sorry for my poor english. I´m from Spain
    Any help will be appreciated
    Thank You

I tried to boot it on safe mode this morning. It showed the forbidden icon on gray screen at startup. I waited for a while and tried again in normal mode. Booted perfectly and showed me the log about the crash. I place it here, but I can't give it format because I write from my iPod and it doesn't show the tools, only the text box:

I downloaded istat pro and installed it. Temperature is fine (51 top in both processors) rpm is right in all the fans BUT the drive bay rpm fan is constant: 1000 rpm without any variation
After 15 minutes, it freezes. No response. I only plugged the monitor and the keyboard and mouse (with cords. I stopped using the magic mouse since the problem appeared and the computer does not have Bluetooth included, I use an USB dongle that now is unplugged)
That's all the news for now

  • I want to replace the drive bays, quesiton about the connected fans...

Curious to know if the bios will report any faults if I replace either of the 5.25 drive bays, losing the connected fans?  I dont need the ODD, and am thinking of fitting 2x 5.25 drive bay caddies in the top 2 bays.  If so, can these be disabled in the bios, or will the system halt during post awaiting a keyboard input?

    Hello,
I'm assuming you're talking about the TS140? The maximum supported drives on this system is 4. The cooling is the main reason for this. Lenovo does sell an adapter that has a small fan on the back of it to increase airflow inside the system. 5 drives were never validated on this system and if it were, I'm not sure how it would affect the temperature inside the chassis. It may work, but I would be concerned about the airflow / temperature inside the chassis with adding drives without an additional fan.

  • Whats the average temperature of my drive bay for my G5? Its at 1832F

Whats the average temperature of my drive bay on my G5?
The drive bay is running at 1832 degrees F.
I just installed two new hitachi 2Tb drives in both the drive bay A and B.
They are independently at 94 degrees F and 104 degrees F.
The computer sounds lauder then before I installed the new drives.
However my fans are running at a normal 1800rpms.
I dont remember if my average drive bay was around 1800degrees F
If it is high is it because the drives are faulty?
I carbon copied my original 1TB drive with my OS on it to my new 2TB drive... was a faulty copy? (resulting in OS X running my fans slow)
    All help needed.

any reason why the computer sounds louder?
think the two new drives are putting out louder noise?

    Its like considerably louder.
I first thought it was my fans cause i thought the drivebay was runnign hot but when i noticed the rom on my fans are average i figured it had to be the drives

  • Expansion bay fan too fast/loud

My dual 2.7 G5 has recently developed a problem with the expansion bay fan. As soon as the boot process has reached a certain point the fan goes to about 90% speed and stays there.
Resetting PRAM, SMU, repairing permissions, updating the system (10.4.8 all updates installed), nothing helped.
    TechTool Deluxe shows no problem.
Hardwaremonitor 4.0 shows 89-90% fan speed for the PCI Expansion bay. But there is only the graphics board installed and I did not change anything about the configuration since I bought the machine. Hardwaremonitor shows about 58000 for the power use in the expansion bay (whatever unit it may use here...). Is that a normal figure?
Everything else is just fine, but as soon as the system starts running it decides to drive the fan to that uncomfortable speed while a few weeks ago the whole Mac was barely making any noise at all.

Hi Guido, and a Warm Welcome to the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Assuming that you have made a visual (and aural (!)) check that it is definitely the fan at the front of the G5, in a combined housing with the puny internal speaker, that is making all the noise -
The units for "Slot combined" (as it's called on this venerable G5 DP2 running HM v. 4.1) are mentioned in the HM Help FAQ
"Why do the power sensors of the Power Mac G5 slots not carry a unit?
At this time we don't have enough data about these sensors. For this reason it is unknown in which unit the readings have to be interpreted. The readings could, for example, be interpreted as milliwatts. The sensors Slot 12V, Slot 3.3V and Slot 5V show the power load drawn by PCI cards for the respective voltages. The sensor Slot combined also includes the current power load by the SATA hard disks."
The "Slot combined" on this G5 DP2 with an X800XT is reading 23563.0; note that, according to the quote above, this also includes power to the hard drives.
This "PCI Slot Fan" is currently showing 35%.
For comparison, there are some fairly, er, not-very-recent, HM readings here

  • Media Bay Fan making a clicking noise

I have a powermac G5 tower.  Just recently the media bay fan located next to the hard drive started making a clicking noise.  If I turn off the computer for a while and turn it back on the fan does NOT make the noise.  But after the computer runs for about 5 minutes the clicking starts again.  The fan is running normally but the clicking is annoying.  Does anyone know what might cause this?  Will it damage the computer more if I run it like this?  The only way to replace the fan is to replace the case and it's not worth it to me to do that.  Any suggestions would be helpful because I can't find any info on the internet.  Thanks for any help!

You should be able to a replace the fan without replacing the case, but I think the fan is going out.
There can be other things, sometimes something in the case may drop down just  low enough to bump into the fan. So, make sure you use a high-powered magnifying glass and a heavy-duty flashlight to inspect the fan thoroughly. Spin the fan with your finger, see if you can move the fan forwards and backwards.
If there is enough forward and backward play in the fan the noise could be coming from that. After the fan heats up the electric motor becomes loose and the fan may be jutting out and hitting the case.

  • About PM G5 drive bay sensor

    Hi everyone,
After following many threads on troubleshooting random reboot on a PowerMac G5, I've just used a pair of temperature monitoring apps.
Surprisingly, neither of them get any info for the Drive Bay Sensor. ASD 2.5.8 didn't pass the test for this sensor.
    Two questions:
    • Do I assume that the sensor is dead, as long as there's no report of it on apps?
(haven't checked out the wires yet)
    • If the sensor is dead, would it be risky running the machine after taking it out?
(Here in Spain is not that easy finding spare parts)
Please, forgive my rusted english :-)
    Many thanks in advance.
    Javier

    Hi japamac,
Changed PRAM battery. I couldn't check out the PSU, my allen key isn't long enough to reach the proccessor screws.
I took my time to clean and reseat everything (fans, DIMMs, Graphics Card...)
Before changing the battery I unplugged mains and left the computer untouched for an hour to let it drain any voltage inside. Turned it on an reset PRAM in Open Firmware. Then it booted normally, stayed on for 12 hours and turned off (auto restart disabled, it's not a reboot but a power failure). Again, no log entry.
Next step, buying a longer allen key and taking out the PSU to clean it and check it out.
Sadly, it sounds to me as a damaged capacitor discharging itself from time to time.
Some posts say that it could be an overheating issue due to the accumulation of dust inside the narrow PSU compartment. Maybe I'm lucky enough.
Thanks for keeping this thread alive, it's so useful for me as I can log in every step I take.
    I'll keep posting my progress

  • How do I move Macintosh HD drive from drive bay 4 to another drive bay

I have a drive in each bay.  One of the drives is being removed.  I'll have an open drive bay.  I Can't remember how Macintosh HD got in drive bay 4, but it's there.  If I move Macintosh HD from drive bay 4 to drive bay 1, will the Mac recognize it when I restart the computer?

Why move it to begin with? yes it will immediately boot from it. yes you can insure it will. there is no difference in where - maybe good idea to clone the system, have a bootable clone copy, maybe the time is right for a $100 120GB SSD now.

  • I have just installed a 2 tera drive  in additional drive bay I would like to use it as my starup  or primary drive. Help... I need to transfer data...

I have installed a 2 tera bit drive in second drive bay. The starup drive is small. How do I transfer data and make new drive the startup or primary drive.. Thanks. In addition I will be pulling the small drive and installing a new larger drive a s back up. Also I need to initalize the new drive.. Wow.. O.K. I know that you are out there and can guide me. Merry Christmas to you all.. Many Thanks   Dennis

I suggest you download either CCC or SuperDuper.
Then clone the current system disk to the new system disk.
Reboot from the new disk after the clone is complete.
If everything is running correctly, you can then erase the old system disk.

  • 5770 and 5870 in Mac Pro 2009 - noisy PCIe expansion bay fan

I replaced the Geforce GT120 by the ATI radeon 5770 in my Mac Pro Quad 2.66 Nehalem. I had severe trouble with the speed of the fan of the PCI-e expansion bay: 2000 RPM and really noisy. After 30-60 minutes it slowed down and became silent, but upon reboot the noise and the high speed were there again.
I have sent the 5770 back to Apple. I am considering to try the 5870, but I am afraid I will be in trouble again.
With the GT 120, the fan speed is only 800 RPM and the Mac is silent. The ATI Radeon cards require one or two power cables connecting to the logic board.
Could that be the cause of the problems or was the 5770 a bad card? Or is it the logic board. I ran the Apple Hardware Test. everything was OK.
I checked it with Techtool Pro and there were no problems found.
Any help would be much appreciated. I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC without result.
Kind regards and thanks of reading.

If it is any consolation I have the same machine and installed the Radeon 5770 and have intermittent high expansion bay fan speeds (1400-2400rpm). I just checked this board today because it seems more noisy today than in a while and the ambient air is listed as 78 degrees F. The card has it's own fan and exhaust slots in the back of the card and the air from them is warm but not what I would consider hot. I had had two video cards and a eSATA card installed and never had a problem. Now with just this card and the eSATA it exists. I'm betting if I call Apple about it they will tell me it's only listed on their site as compatible with the 2010 Mac Pros, so, for now I will live with it.
