Drive broken; how to erase

My Macbook is about 10 years old. What do I do to prepare it for selling or garbage? The disk drive is broken, so I can't reinstall the OS (10.5.8). It's still useable -- I'm typing from it right now -- so someone may want it cheap. Of course I want to get rid of all traces of me.

To be brutally honest a 10-year-old Mac is of little use to anyone unless they want to try taking it to bits and messing about with it - quite apart from any wonkiness. You might be able to get a small amount of money for it but it's probably not worth the effort. If you want to trash the disk for security reasons, just take a hammer to it.
I don't know what the rules are wherever you are but many countries don't like this sort of thing being put in the ordinary trash - there are sometimes recycling facilities or places to get it thrown away properly.
If you are going to put it in the trash, please take the battery out first and find a way of disposing of it safely. Lithium is nasty stuff and you don't want it going into landfill and possibly getting into the water table. Again, some countries have places which will take old batteries and dispose of them properly.

  • DVD Drive broken - How do I unmount it on an iMac2007?

As we entered 2 DVDs at a time the DVD drive broke.
After an unprofessional repair service (iMac is vintage, no original parts available) the DVDs got out.
BUT we get a "stomach like" grumbling from the DVD drive every 20 sec.
How can I disconnect / unmount the DVD drive to get rid of the noise?
    thanks for your help!

    Hi Heidi,
    Welcome to the Community!
That's not a problem, you can certainly download the product online. Please go to http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs6-direct-download-links.html and download Photoshop CS6 from there.
Remeber to follow the instructions mentioned under "Very Important section" otherwise download won't start.

  • Hard drive broken: How do i get my version of windows 7 back?

Hello, My hard drive broke and does not work anymore at all. I guess my windows licence is still valid though, so i bought a new hard drive and i try to recover my version via windows website. After verification of my product key, they tell me to contact the builder because it was pre-installed. which i'm doing  What should i do to get my version of windows back? thanks

Your currently published pages can't be opened by iWeb so your iDisk files will not work (for editing). They will still work as Web pages and you can link to them with the new iWeb pages you'll be forced to make.
iWeb uses a special folder (Domain.sites) to store your data. If you had backed this folder up you could bring it into the proper location on your new hard drive.

How to erase USB flash drives on my MacBookAir ?? Thanks, Michael

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
To erase them, you can use Disk Utility, in /Applications/Utilities > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
When you open Disk Utility, choose the external disk in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk

Running Time Machine for the first time, how that I make sure that some information I have in the external drive does not get erase in the prosess

    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Note: This is now your Library. It's not a Back Up, and you need another disk for backing up.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.

  • How to erase folders listed in loop browser

I accidentally copied some samples/loops from my external drive into the loop browser that I don't want there. How do erase these files and samples and remove them from the list of everything available?

    John Alcock wrote:
What works for me is (1) first getting rid of all the files I don't want, (2) group the remainder in folders that I choose and name them so they make sense, (3) trash all the Apple Search index files, (4) drag and drop the newly created folders in to the loop browser for reindexing, choosing the option of 'leave in location' (or whatever it says) when asked.
    Hello,
I'm trying to follow your instructions, but when I drag the folder into the loop browser for reindexing, its not giving me any options, it just says "adding loops to the loop browser" and when its done, I do not have any folders in my loop browser. The loops seem to be added, but they are not in any hierarchy!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • I need to backup TC's drive. How do I do this to WD MyBook Live connected to TC via Ethernet?

I need to backup TC's drive. How do I do this to WD MyBook Live connected to TC via Ethernet?

P.S. Solved it exactly the other way around (compared to the original intent). 4 simple steps:
    1. Made WD's MyBook Live my primary file server.
    2. Made WD's MyBook Live my backup location for Time Machine (moving to it made me reconfigure TM on all home Macs = new full backups and no old data left - but I didn't really need old backups - they were sitting there just in case).
Added bonus - on MyBook Live it is easy to create shares (so that now my general file server is separate from my photo archive and software archive, etc.) - while on TC I had to partition the drive.
    3. Moved all files from TC to MyBook Live.
    4. Erased all data from TC - so that its drive is clean.
    5. Instructed MyBook Live to automatically backup itself to TC.
    Job done.

I could not inset DVD into my Macbook pro CD-Driver. How could I insert it/

try ejecting the drive incase there is something inside. if you are trying to say that the drive won't read DVDs that are inserted then you have a slightly larger problem. also if you do not hear a noise of some sort after seeing the eject symbol on the screen your optical drive may be broken or unresponsive in either case make an appointment with the apple store

  • How to erase and install new version os Mac Os X?

Can someone tell me how to erase and install new copy of Mac OS X 10.5.8 ?? IS there a way to do this without CD?? I no longer have the disks and I cant find a way to get this done.. The reason I want to do this is because a 12 year old was using this computer for a long time and there is a lot of junk stuff on the disk, so I want to start from fresh.
    Thank you in advance.
    Yani.

    Hi Yani,
Your out of luck without an Install Disc, & on dangerous ground also.
    2 ways to go...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
    Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

Boot into the Recovery HD (restart holding down Command+r). Launch Disk Utility and erase the drive (all data will be gone forever so make sure you have a reliable copy of any valuable data).
