Drive C Permissons

I am having an insane amount of trouble trying to write/create or copy files to C drive on a Windows 8.1 Enterprise Surface Pro 3 machine.
I have :
Taken ownership of C ( I am a member of admin)
Given every user (system ; everyone, Adm and myself) fuil control permissions on C
Verified that there is no encyrption on the drive
I am at a total loss of what else to do....

It's the same exact key as for Vista and Win 7:

Search the web also for "EnableLUA".  You'll turn up instructions and anecdotal information on it.  I've been running my Windows 8.1-based workstation with UAC off since last year, and it works fine - pretty much as the prior
versions have, for desktop operations.  I've not missed any of the Metro/Modern toys one bit.  I believe that's just another passing fad.
Yes, it surprised me too that Microsoft no longer overtly allows disabling UAC directly, and I thought it was pretty sneaky of them to redefine the bottom setting in the UI like that.  They claim it's so their Metro/Modern apps can be secure.
I smell an attempt to head toward a Microsoft "walled garden".  That may be good for consumers, but for engineers not so much.
Just remember, as I mentioned - if you disable UAC for the long term using the above key you will a) be running as a full time administrator, but b) you will have no access to Metro/Modern apps.  I suppose you *could* disable it just long enough
to drop that file you need, then re-enable it...  But your plan to make your application work differently might be better for the long term.

  • External Hard Drives Changing Permissions to Read Only

Three of my USB external hard drives have suddenly changed to read only. One of the times I was trying to transfer/back-up the files from one drive that had changed to read only to another external. Suddenly the second drive changed permissions. Then after plugging a third external, that drive changed permissions. They all were working perfectly fine with my computer and I have only been using them on MACS. Any explanations? Could there be something wrong with my USB ports? Is it possible to have a virus of some sort?
    Thank you!

In disk utility I had a look. I cannot verify or set permission (greyed out). The data coming back from info. How can I change this??

  • Unable to recover Mavericks via Time Machine on iMac (2011). I have one Time Machine backup from this week On new Time Capsule. I already attempted safe boot and NPRAM reset. Hard drive and permissions verified as ok.

Some more history - I'm not too techie so added everything in I thought might be significant!
    - Installed Mavericks on iMac in October 2013
    - experienced regular low memory issues - used Memory Clean app as a workaround
    - last week decided to upgrade installed memory from 4gb to 16gb. Faster loading but still running out of memory - just takes longer to do so.
    - also last week purchased 2gb Time Capsule (to back up 660gb on 1TB drive)
    - one successful Time Machine backup completed last weekend.
    - I decided to try and clear some space, tidy my folders, old music files,  delete duplicates etc (Not system files)
    - then tried out 'time machine restore' just to test it out. Deleted files and folders recovered ok using Time Machine menu (the one that looks like outta space)
    - yesterday, Avast Anti-Virus flagged virus detected (sorry, I didn't manage to capture details) and quarantined file, but I couldn't get any windows to respond so forced Mac to shutdown.
    - attempted regular reboot , system hanging on white/ apple symbol screen.
    -  attempted Safe reboot - reboot stalls at mess 'BootCacheControl: unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist no such file or directory.
(I don't know if this is significant)
    - attempt NPRAM reset, reboot hanging at Apple symbol still
    - attempted reboot into Disk Utility. HD drive verified ok. Permissions checked and Safari permissions fixed (only)
    - finally attempting restore from Time Machine Backup via Disk Utility. Stalls at 'select a backup source'. Menu is 'searching for Time Machine Backup....'
Nothing is listed, after a few mins machine just goes to sleep.
My Time Capsule and networks are all switched on. No idea what to try next!

Most of the problems like this that people report on this forum are due to bad "utilities" like Memory Clean and Avast.
Your Mac probably didn't have a virus. There has never been an OSX virus "in the wild". Third party antivirus software is of very dubious utility on Macs. Macs are not PCs. OSX has anti-malware protection built into it already.
Do you have any other third party "utilities" on your Mac, such as CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?
Is the RAM you installed the recommended type of RAM for your Mac?
Take a look at this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
But your OS may be damaged beyond repair, or beyond what disk utility is able to repair.
In that case you have a few options:
There is a small chance that a (reputable) third part utility like Techtool Pro 7  may be able to fix your OS.
Try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
bite the bullet, boot into the recovery partition or internet recovery, and erase your HD, reinstall Mavericks from scratch, and start over. Your documents are probably still on your Time Machine Backup. I wouldn't reinstall the documents via a migration- you don't want to reinstall bad system files along with your documents- but you could copy them one by one back to your internal HD. And most importantly- don't reinstall any third party "utilites" like Memory Clean or Avast (or any other third-party antivirus software, for that matter).

  • External Hard Drive changed permissions to 'read only'

I have been searching everywhere for a solution to this with no luck, so I figured I would start my own post and see what comes of it.
Computer: iMac Intel 24" /3.0ghz/4gb ram/1TB WD hard drive
External Drive giving me issues: Western Digital 1.5TB (has been formatted for Mac)
I recently installed a new main hard drive into my iMac after the original one began to die. I have an external drive that I had been using for achiving files for a long time, with no issues at all. After I installed the new drive, it has suddently become 'ready only' - thus, I cannot write to the drive at all, but can pull information off of it.
When I go to 'Get Info' and down to the permissions section, it is completely 'greyed out' - I can't change or click anything. It reads:
    sckenyon (me): read & write
    staff: read & write
    everyone: ready only
Which is normal, but given that I should have writing priveledges, shouldn't I be able to change those permissions? Or that I should have writing permissions since it shows that I should have them?
I have tried some commands in terminal under other discussions, but I just get a statement that says the volume is 'ready only'.
I have tried Verify Disk in Disk Utility - doesn't do anything, just tells me the disk is OK. I have no option to repair permissions - they are greyed out.
So, can anyone help me out here? I'm at a complete loss! I'm not a complete noob at this, but I am definitely not an expert. I'm capable of following terminal commands if that's what it takes, but I do not want to format the drive if I don't have to (it's already formatted for Mac, so I don't see why I should have to).
    Thank you

The problem may be an erroneous flag for the volume of the external drive that puts it in read-only mode.  When I had a similar problem, the following steps corrected it.
    1. Open Disk Utility and Verify the Volume.
    2. If the verification shows that the volume is OK. If so, run repair disk. If the verification does not shaw that the volume is OK, STOP.  Copy the drive immediately to oanotehr drive before proceeding.  Failure to do so can result in permanent data loss.
    3. After the repair function completes, close Disk Utility and start Terminal.  It is located in the System Utilities. Type in the following command:
    sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/[Volume Name]
For example, assume your external drives are named Mary X where X is a sequential Arabic numeral.  The command line for one of those volumes will be "sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/Mary\ X" where X is the drive number. You will be prompted for your administrator's password.  Note that when you type in the password, it will not be echoed in the terminal window for security reasons .  Press "Return"
If your experience is similar to mine, your external drive  will no longer be in read-only mode. Hope this is helpful.

  • Unable to repair External Drive disk permissions

I have an external harddrive which holds my itunes library. Today I have been getting permission errors and now my itunes won't access the files on the drive.
I have tried to fix the errors with disk utility but now when I try to repair it I get the error: Could not unmount the disk.
Now I can't even see the iTunes folder on the external drive (I can see others) but I know it is there as 150GB of data is unaccounted for.

I had the same problem with my Time Machine backup disk and was able to solve it without the serious computer calisthenics recommended by others on the web. I'm running Snow Leopard on an intel iMac and using an external Seagate drive. Here's how I got it fixed.
    1. Unmounted the drive and unplugged it.
    2. Plugged it back in after a decent interval to let the disk spin down.
    3. Shut down the iMac and restarted it a few minutes later (hard reset).
    4. THE DISK DID NOT SHOW UP IN FINDER. Because I had a lot of work to do, I postponed further systems programming.
    5. After about 20 minutes, my Norton utilities found it and began to search it. It was back in finder with r/w permissions for me and everybody else.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro Hard Drive Repair/Permissions Problems

My MacBook Pro (2.2GHz) wouldn't start. I was getting the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel that never stops. Tried zapping the PRAM. Tried holding down the shift key. No luck.
So I finally booted from the Leopard Install CD. No problem. Figured I'd use the Disk Utility to repair the disk. I get the following two problems every time:
    REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS:
    Repairing Permissions for "GROOVY"
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    REPAIR DISK:
    Checking Catalog File
incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub
(it should be 16 instead of 17)
Every time I re-launch the computer, using the Leopard CD, I get the same two problems. Can't repair permissions at all. And I get the same "incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub" error when trying to Repair Disk. Even though Disk Utility appeared to repair that problem (and then recheck it) the last time.
Anyway I was able to use Firewire Target Disk Mode to copy all my files to my PowerMac G4. While I was connected I also used DiskWarrior. Seemed to repair the disk with no problems.
So at this point I've pretty much resigned myself to doing an Archive and Install. Unfortunately I've tried it twice and I keep getting this:
    INSTALL FAILED
Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer
The installer could not install some files in "/Volumes/GROOVY". Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
Click restart to restart your computer and try again.
Now I'm going to try wiping the disk and doing a fresh install. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to call Apple. Anybody else having similar problems?
    Thanks,
    LT

As I understand it, you can't fix a failing SMART status. Believe me I tried on my iBook! I was originally under the impression that DiskWarrior and Tech Tool Pro could fix anything, but I now understand that they and Disk Utility can only repair the directory. As it was explained to me, SMART was set up to give warning of hard drive failure so that you could rescue your data before the hard drive dies altogether. You can disable it I think, but that's like putting black tape over the warning light in your car that lights up if you are running out of oil--possible to do, but not a good idea.
So if your SMART status is failing, then the only cure is to replace the hard drive. The hard drive can work for a while, but it's on its way out.
Here's a little background information on SMART status:
    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000184.htm
And I hope this was just a rhetorical question!

  • HT202447 Drive Utility: Permissions differ on "Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin"; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .

I downloaded & installed Java 7 for Mountain Lion 10.8.3 from http://www.java.com/download/mac_download.jsp . Upon running Verify Permissions in Drive Utility I receive the following messgae: Permissions differ on “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x . Disk Utilities is unable to repair the permissions error.

Sorry, what I meant is I was getting the message "missing plugin", so I thought I had to repair Permissions and every time I tried I got that message “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x", but then I followed Java instructions. I went back to Java 6 and finally I could access my bank.
I came across this article on the internet:
For the second time in a month, Apple has effectively blacklisted the current version of the Java Web plugin on OS X. The block comes just days after it was discovered that the latest version of the plugin, which had been rushed out to patch a critical vulnerability, can still be exploited despite its heightened security mechanisms.
Apple has worked to distance itself from Java in recent years. The company deprecated its own version of the Java virtual machine for OS X, instead deferring development to Oracle itself. The browser plugin in particular has become a common vector for malware attacks, and Apple removed the Java Web plugin from recent versions of OS X last year. Those needing the plugin must install it separately.
I even tried "About Java for OS X 2013-003", but it also didn't work.
That's why I decided to uninstalled Java 7 and installed 6 again and it worked.
    Thank you anyway.

  • New hard drive - Disk Permissions not working

Recently had my Hard Drive relplaced, and while updating ran in to multipul issues.
The main one being with iTunes, I can't download songs I purchased from my iPhone & when I try to do it manually it tells me the my permissions need to be changed. So I ran a permissions verification on DiskUtility and it's telling me a whole bunch of stuff doesn't match up.
    Should I run a repair?
    Any other ideas?
Also, my last hard drive had no issue installing Mountain Lion, and this one refuses.
Any one else have this issue?

    MK6475GSX
Yes, that has AFT. See MKxx75GSX.
    I uploaded all the drivers..
But the point is that when you restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media, all the drivers are already properly installed. Everything should work as it originally did.
I would perform the restore again and immediately install this driver.

  • Second Drive Folder Permissions - Recovering Files

    Hi Guys
Browsing some files on my second drive (internal) I noticed some folders had like a red 'stop' mark on them and I couldn't see any files in them. I right clicked and changed my permissions from 'No Access' to 'Read and Write'. Nothing happened. So I select the folder containing the unreadable folders, did the same, and ticked apply to 'enclosed items' and rebooted.
After rebooting the folders didn't have the stop mark on them, but showed as being empty. If I copy one of the folders nothing is copied (OS X thinks it's blank)
I have tried opening terminal and chmod the folder to 755 and nothing.
Please, can anyone help. I have loads of jpegs that I can not afford to lose.
    Powermac G5 2.5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Only a few more things I can think of:
    1) The drive's directory has become corrupted and it can no longer display the files. Run Disk Utility's "repair disk" and see if that fixes it. Better yet, try DiskWarrior on it.
    2) If neither of those help, you might try Prosoft DataRescue on it. It costs $99, but the free demo will tell you whether or not the full version can recover what you want.
    3) If that doesn't help, you might have to send your drive in to Drive Savers for a hardware data extraction (big $$$$$).

I can read but I can't write to an external drive.
How do I change permissions? None of the helps here on the discussions have helped.
Why would a computer company let me read files but not write? Hahaha. This is insane.
I have to write computer files for work. It's a project due this morning.
Man, I'm going to have to go back to PC.
Just need the compter to write files.

If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Windows NTFS External Drive and Permissions

    Hello,
I have a 250 gig Maxtor OneTouch I use for storing/backing up files from my PC (Windows XP Home Edition) In the past I have been able to use my external drives on both my Mac and PC without any problems. This time, however when I connect the drive, it mounts, but I only have "Read Only" access. I'm currenty using 10.3.9 and I am the administrator. Well, no I hadn't written to this drive from the Mac in the past. It was a new drive and I used it on the PC first. Would it be possible to maybe create a new partition, either on the Mac or the PC in a Mac readable format without destroying the information currently on it?

  • Shared external drive - user permissions setup

I've set a home LAN made of 3 iMac/eMac connected via Airport. I've recently added a 500 Gb firewire external drive connected to my iMac to manage backups. I divided it into 3 partitions (1 per user/xMac) and mounted them using sharepoints. It's all great; users can see, mount and use all partitions.
Here is the issue: I would like each user to only see and use his dedicated partition. I believe I must play with users and groups, but could not make it to work. I'm not very familiar with this and I'm afraid to make big mistake. Coud somebody help on this ?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I should write one, but it's fairly simple once you get into it...
Click on the Groups tab, make a group name... say "PartitionA", click add group, repeat for 2 more groups... "PartitionB", "PartitionC".
Click on the Users & Public Tab, fill in for "Tom, "Dick", & "Harry".
Back to the Goups tab, higlight "PartitionA", then highlight "Tom", click the plus sign... repeat for the other two groups and users.
Now under "Normal Shares" tab, you can highlight a Share, then click on the Show File Properties button and assign a Group, and it's Permissions.

  • Optical Drive Rights Permissions

    Not a hardware problem...
Logged in as the primary Admin user, if I insert any DVD, the drive spins, never mounts and ejects the disk.
Logged in as Root or secondary Admin User, if I insert the DVD, it mounts normally. If I then log out of root and log in as primary Admin User, the User still has access to the DVD and everything on it. If I eject the disk and try to reload as Admin User, DVD does not mount.
So there is a rights/permissions issue with the primary Admin User which denies the User the right to load a DVD. (I had some serious Keychain corruption issues and resolved those by restroing the Keychain from the TM back up.)
Can you tell me how to restore rights to the DVD to the primary Admin user?
    Thanks for any help.

make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that other account's list..
    Nope. did not work.
The second way is much more detailed
I was looking for Terminal commands that would reset hardware access rights. Oh well. I went to Plan B: I wiped the internal disk and did a complete reinstall. I have three external disks for backup and I keep .dmg images of all software installers and copies of all updaters; so the wipe, reinstall, update, and restore data - for four users - only required a few hours while watching a really wretched movie on TV.
BTW, I've never enabled the root user account and strongly recommend you disable it.
For a single user, I'd agree. This computer works as a File Server for the household including secondary backup and restore services for multiple users across multiple computers and devices, in addition to TM. It is easier to run some backup functions from Root rather than providing R/W access to all accounts and all computers for a "Master" user.
I do agree with you: for most users in most situations,I wouldn't recommend enabling the Root User.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

  • OS X extern drive ownership/permissions and NFS exporting

    - I have an external (250GB) firewire drive on OS X 10.4.9.
    - I want to have it available to local users of this Mac but with ownership/permissions of created files/directories protected in the usual UNIX sense of unique UID/GID -- files/directories created by one user cannot be read/written by other users of this Mac except as allowed by standard UNIX permissions groups settings; eg., those set with 'chmod' command.
    - I want to NFS-server this drive volume to a linux NFS client (eg., RHEL 4), again with files/directories protected in this same UID/GID UNIX sense. In our case, the users' UID/GIDs will be made to match, but regardless, I wish likewise for file/directory use on the linux client to be restricted as per UNIX permissions and the files/directories created by the Mac users have protections remain in place against linux user access, and visa versa, as above.
Is this feasable in Mac OS X (without OS X Server)?
How does one go about acheiving it?
I have basic Netinfo Manager skills for creating NFS exports and starting NFS daemon services, but am not expert on all available export options. I have average linux IT NFS server/client and user management skills.
    Thanks,
    -Neil

I don't know about networking with Linux, but I don know that for OS X users, enforcing permissions on an external drive without OS X Server is tricky.
First, log in to your admin account. Right-click the drive, Get Info, expand Ownership & Permissions, and uncheck "Ignore ownership on this volume". Then set permissions accordingly.
The problem is that any unprivileged user can log in to his own account, Get Info, recheck the box, and get ownership of the entire contents of the drive. This is possible even without the admin password.
There is a workaround that will remove the Ignore Ownership box from the Get Info panel so that there will be no box for them to check. First make sure that the box is unchecked and that the permissions are set how you want. Then enable ACLs on the volume by entering this command in a Terminal window:
    sudo fsaclctl -p /Volumes/volumename -e
Then restart Finder. Now there's no box for the unprivileged user to check. But I don't know where this setting is stored; perhaps the unprivileged user can find some command-line way of getting the box re-checked and thus getting ownership of everything.
If there is some way you can get the data off of the external drive and onto the main boot drive you will have the best chance of keeping the data safe.
