Drive cloning problems - Help

I am trying to replace my 160GB drive that came with my dual 2.5 with a WD Raptor 150GB drive and am having a **** of a time getting it to work.
Here's what I've tried so far;
- With the Raptor installed as the second drive, I tried to use disk utility to perform a simple restore from my system drive to the Raptor. The process starts and appears to be moving along. Then the system hangs about 75% of the way through. Can not get the force quit menu to come up. Tried this twice with the same result. Also, I made sure all of the screen and power savers were turned off so as not to dusturb the process.
- Tried the same except this time I ran disk utility off of the install disk (suggested by an Apple store person). This produced the same results.
- Tried using Drive Genius but it doesn't like the fact that the two drives are different sizes.
Has anybody done this?
Thanks in advance
John C

RETURN THE DRIVE.
The Raptor 150 DOES NOT WORK in the G5's.
Regardless of what you might read or what someone has told you, this drive does not function properly in a G5. See the thread about the Raptor 150 on this forum. You can also look at: Xlr8yourmac.com for other user reports and the problems. It affects other Western Digital drives as well. They have a list of which drives are not compatible on Western Digital's website, at least they publicly acknowledged this.
Or, you can do what I did...
Use it as a $300 paperweight or just as an external disk for video and other work. I use it as the latter...

  • Hard Drive (Maybe) Problem - Help Please!!

Hey guys. I got a 3rd Generation 15GB iPod. My hard drive is the problem here. When its not in action, very quietly but for surely, you can hear some high-pitched noises that usually don't occur. It sounds like a twitching sound, or twitchy sort of a sound (just as the word "twitchy" sounds like") What has gone wrong with my iPod? Thank you all!

I have to mention that I am not a techician, I may not understand the reason behind, I could be wrong and my suggestion may not work in your case. But, I must say that all the suggestions I made are basically from my past experienece fixing more than 10 iPods (from my friends and family members). I do not and have no intention to make a suggestion purely from what I heard and read (otherwise I would indicate). These have been tested and proved to work in my cases. I also have to deal with iPod problems such as:-
    1. Sad iPod
    2. Folder with exclamation mark
    3. iPod failed to be recognized by the computer
    4. broken iPod with 'clicking' sound
I can simply post a link from the apple article - which would suggest you to do a Reset and Restore actions, however, most of the users would agree with me that the iPod with the aforementioned problems would not able to get mounted with the computer. In that case, how could you do a Restore. Should I just suggest the user to send their iPods for repair?
I have tried myself with different ways, and I discovered a trick to solve the above problems. First, we must understand what is the problem behind - in my opinion, the problem mainly caused by the head of HD of the iPod getting stuck at a certain point and unable to read the sector properly. If an iPod is an external Hard Disk, how are you going to fix it, I believe that all of us would suggest one to do a Reformat. Right, but unfortunately, the iPod could not be mounted, so what next? I find an interesting way - when the iPod is formatted in PC and connected with a Mac computer, it will "Force" mount, then why not do a Restore there. And once it has been completed, re-connect it with your original PC, and this time with the iPod being formatted to a different format, a window will pop up, indicating that it cant read the iPod and ask whether you would like to do a reformat. Then open the iPod updater and click Restore (back to PC version). Again, interestingly, it works the other way as well i.e. Mac's iPod fixed with a Window based PC.

  • Bootcamp Cloning problem

I have had terrific help from everyone to get my OS drive cloned, but now I have hit a snag. I have a bootcamp partition on my old OS drive and Carbon Copy Cloner comes up with the following screen when I try to clone it to the new SSD OS drive.
Even I can work out that the partition isn't gunna work! I have tried diffrerent formats which I new would not work, but I had to have a go.
Can anybody her today solve this problem for me.

there is a way to do this..
use bootcamp assistant to create the bootcamp partition on the new drive.
use winclone to make a copy of the original bootcamp partition
restore the winclone file to the new bootcamp partition.
it worked for me on 10.6.8
    good luck.

  • SATA hard drive connection problem

Has anyone ever had a problem with SATA cables when installing new hard drives?
I have an early 2008 iMac with the original 250-Gb Western Digital Caviar hard drive. I installed a new 1-Tb WD Green drive in it yesterday but it will not boot from the new drive. The mac will not even recognized the presence of the drive (flashing question mark). I cloned the original drive and have confirmed that it was partitioned correctly (GUID).
The new drive WILL boot up when connected as an external USB drive with a universal connector.
The original drive will boot up when reinstalled in the iMac, but it is not recognized if I put the new drive in and have the original drive connected as a USB drive.
I started the mac from a DVD and did a clean install of the operating system. I booted with the iMac as a target drive. My Powerbook couldn't see the new drives either.
I went out and bought a new Seagate Barricuda 1Tb drive. The SAME result. Will not boot internally. Will boot as an external drive.
BOTH new drives power up and are spinning. They will both boot the computer when connected using a SATA to USB converter (externally).
MY THEORY is that the SATA connection is at fault. There are no visible defects and all the connections seem tight, but that's the only reason I can think of.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can test the connection? Is there any reason that the orginal drive's SATA connector would not fit the two new drives differently?
    HELP!!!

Right if its SATA, use SATA1, go into Bios, Integrated Peripherals (manual page 3-20) - enable PATA IDE and SATA IDE(the via controllers), set floppy to auto. go to ONBOARDPCI controller - P20378 S ATA controller (the promise controller) and set to disabled, EXIT  back to main bios screen, then advanced bios features, set boot sequence to floppy, CD, BB1(SATA,if shown, HDD if not), then enable other boot devices, and enable floppy seek.
    EXIT and SAVE
Have WinXP CD in CD drive, at first install screen F6, wait for S screen, use both Via SATA drivers for XP, once you have loaded 2 nd one enter - F8 page and setup page, PARTITION and FORMAT, ( format takes secs) then install. When it resets it should show menu with XP on it, and the 25 sec countdown, enter.
One point the SATA drive connections are poor, slightest movement will cause data corruption, or a sharp bend in cable. make sure connectors are fully home squarely on mobo and drive.
    Should be OK.
Either email or here if you need help
    cheers

  • Thinkpad T530 Hard Drive Cloning

    Hello,
I'm looking for best practices, recommendations, lessons learned, etc. for copying the hard drive contents of one T530 to nine other identical T530s recently purchased for software engineering usage.  A current snap shot of our old laptops shows that  we have 214 programs loaded (majority of these programs are not pre-loaded from Lenova), so I'm looking for the most efficient and painless way of getting all the laptops loaded with an identical image.  In the past we have used Norton Ghost but encountered issues with using legacy IBM Thinkpad laptops.  Does the built-in Rescue and Recovery handle this process?  Is a 3rd party product (such as Norton Ghost) recommended?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

+1 for Acronis.  You _can_ also do this with Rescue and Recovery, but it's quite a bit slower in my experience.
Pull a full drive image onto bootable media, then restore to the other drives when they are installed in the target machines.
[edit] Or boot Acronis stand-alone on each machine and clone from the original drive in an external enclosure/adapter.  The options re resizing and preservation of volume ID (probably not what you want) are somewhat different when cloning vs restoring.
Historically, there have been cloning problems with ThinkPads when the target drive wasn't actually installed when it was written.  Something to do with the way BIOS addresses the drives.  This may not be a problem with newer machines, but ti's generally recommended.

Sending by Dropbox where, To who, to what computer? As your does not start up.
You need to take at least the OS disc to a work Mac computer and create DMG from the OS install disc then restore that DMG to USB thumb drive. Then you can boot the computer from that thumb drive and install the OS. That is if your hard drive is functioning correctly.
Then you can use the App disc in the external CD/DVD drive to load up all the included Applications that come with your version of OS X.

  • RAID w/2 USB Drives Startup Problems

I have an internal 750GB HD and I have been backing up to an external 500GB using SuperDuper. I am getting close to 500GB on the internal and with money being tight I bought a 250GB External to RAID with the 500GB using Disk Utility using RAID type Concatenated Disk Set. This seemed to be what I wanted to do, gave me all the disk space, was able to use with SuperDuper and it even shows up under StartUp Disk. However, I can't get it to StartUp from the RAIDed external drives. Please Help me Obi-Wan..hehe sorry I couldn't resist. Any ideas please let me know. Thank you in advance.
    Darrin

Actually, you can format and have multiple partitions and drag volume names into the RAID tab.
I've seen a couple people with problems with WD MyBook 500GB models, and they were using FW interface on Mac Pro, so I would guess it is the bridge that WD uses.
And, USB is not "ideal." You also want each drive in a mirror on its own channel, and there isn't a lot of bandwidth - which you must share with all other USB devices.
You should be able to mirror an internal drive and ext. FireWire.
Any errors on one drive get copied to 2nd. Useful for someone that doesn't know to backup but otherwise... also, SoftRAID 3.6 ($149) would probably do a better job but overkill. It also alerts you immediately if there is an I/O error of any kind.

  • Regarding USB Driver (OMAP1710) Problem for Belkin...

    Dear All,
I've been trying to update my Belkin Skype Phone (F1PP000GN-SK) from version: 1.1.0.10 R20 to version: 1.1.0.22R20 from the belkin support site.
But the problem is when i connect the USB cable to my Windows 7 (32-bit) laptop i get a pop-up saying "Missing OMAP1710 USB driver'
    Kindly someone help me pls.

I believe the original drivers packaged with the Belkin installer/flasher may work on the 32-bit version of Windows 7, but will not work with the 64-bit version.  Since I do own this phone, I decided to resolve this problem for myself as well.  Even though they are not available from Belkin, I was able to track down and extract/modify the latest drivers/inf for this phone.
You will need to extract and browse to these files using device manager to get the device installed.  You will get a warning about the files being unsigned, proceed anyway to finish installing the device.    Before flashing you will either have to disconnect/reconnect the phone or press the "#" key to refresh it.  Once it starts flashing DO NOT disconnect the device.  I've reflashed my phone several times without issue.
If the reason behind upgrading it is to resolve a freeze, the upgrade may not fix it.  You would want to downgrade to the original release.  That will generally resolve the issue.  After that, you can flash it to the latest release.
My version of the latest drivers for Windows XP/Vista/7/8 (32/64-bit unified inf) are available from the following location:

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J Problem, help appreciated

I have been trying to burn an I Movie through I DVD on the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J. The program seems to work correctly until right at the last minute. The burning process gets to Multiplexing and burning and suddenly the disc ejects and says done. The disc when reinserted still is blank. I am fairly new at this and was wondering if I am doing something wrong or is their a problem with my drive? Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I too am having a similar problem. Whenever I burn a Memorex DVD-R through my drive, SimplyBurns stops the operation immediately, saying "disc not writable." I read somewhere that resetting PRAM fixes some problems; that didn't work. Furthermore, here is what System Profiler reports:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:
    Firmware Revision: FCQ5
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media:
    Type: DVD-R
    ID: RITEKF1
    Blank: No
    Erasable: No
    Overwritable: No
    Appendable: Yes
    Write Speeds: 2x, 4x, 8x

I've also been getting an image with the folder and question mark. I've tried everything on the apple support page but it doesn't seem to work either.

Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk.  Duh!  The application for the home is in the mail.

HP says that the drivers for your all in one print/scanner are downloadable from apple. For the scanner to use preview. image capture or the scan icon from the print driver queue.  I don't know how old your HP is, but I know that the newer Os from apple don't support a lot of older printers. You might be able find a third party driver that could work.

Thank you both for your responses but my daughter was reassured by the salesman in the iStyle store (official Apple store in the UAE) that iMessages would work but conceded that FaceTime wouldn't. My iTunes account is registered in the uk and my daughter's iPhone has iMessages even though she bought it (and uses it) in Dubai. Can anyone else throw any light on this?
