Drive column not showing in finder

Hi sorry if this is dumb but I'm new to Mac. My friend's cat sat on my keyboard and now Finder is not showing the column that listed drives, cds, etc, it just starts from within Macintosh HD. I have the settings checked to show Hard Discs, External Discs, CDs and DVDs

Did you check in Finder on your menubar > View menu > Show Sidebar?

My DVD drives (internal and external) do not show in Finder.  Why?
If I insert a disk, it will show, but not till then.

I would like to burn to external as it is much faster and the internal is not liking me.
So, if I pick a file in Finder and click Burn to DVD, it tries to burn to internal.

  • Hard Drive icon not showing in Finder

Noted this problem prior to SL. Spent a considerable amount of time on phone with Apple technician, nothing he suggested worked. He agreed that installing SL due out in few days would probably solve the problem. It did not. Another long session with an Apple Tech troubleshooting, including a re-install of OS 10.6.1. Nothing. In fact I noticed afterwards that now that not only was the HD not showing, but I could not make the external drive icon and CDetc icons disappear via Finder preferences . Trashed the finder.plist and restarted and that solved that problem but still no HD icon. Well, so what? but I wonder why and if it is indicative of a bug in the system or with MY system and what can be done about it.

If you own DiskWarrior, you can try running it.
Each file and folder has Finder settings in its entry in the directory. One of the settings is to make the item invisible in the Finder. A hard disk is recorded as a folder. Obviously it acts just as a folder, it contains other files and folders. It's just the top level folder. If the invisible setting gets set by some means, who knows how, then the entire hard disk will be invisible. It doesn't matter what version of Mac OS X you are using.
Anyway, DiskWarrior considers the invisible setting being set for the hard drive a corruption and will fix it. That may or may not be your problem, but if you have DiskWarrior you would certainly find out.

  • Itunes accesses files on external drive but not showing in finder

I'm running OS  10.6.8. I have an external NTFS drive that I read and wirte to using NTFS mounter. I have files that iTunes show are in a folder on the external drive. iTunes will even play the songs. When I navigate to that folder in Finder there are no files displayed. I connected the drive to a PC and navigated to the folder. Windows says the file (folder) is corrupt. How is it possible that iTunes can read the files? How can I get read & write access to my files?

You'll have to try to repair the drive on a PC.
How is it possible that iTunes can read the files?
Some things will still be readable when corruption occurs, the big problem is when writing occurs when there's corruption.

  • External drive icon not showing in finder

Still trying to get an answer to this one. When I plug in a usb or other external drive to my Powerbook (recently upgraded to Leopard), nothing shows in the flinder window (a 'no name' icon usually appears under the 'hard drive' icon).
When i remove the hard drive I get a warning message about removing the external devise properly.
Ive tried other usbs and same thing, so Im guessing it is a problem on the mac side. However, the external drives show up in Disk Utility.
Is there any other way of accessing external connections and opening them, and quitting properly?

You were absolutely right Camelot. I found a 'sidebar' in Finder preferences and the external drive box was unchecked. All fine now.
    Many thanks

  • External hard drive not showing in finder or disk utility

1TB WD external hard drive is not showing in finder sidebar, destop, or disk utility. I have checked and all the preferences are ticked. The disk itself is showing a light and making a whirring sound during start up after being plugged into the power.

Three different external drives, on 2 different MacBook Pros (different ages).  One drive with internal power, 2 through USB.  Also have a new Solid State External Drive and it does work.  The were all working before upgrade to Yosemite.
    Have tried multiple USB Cords

  • External Hard Drive does not show up in Finder

My external hard drive is not showing up in Finder.
It shows up in Disc Utility, but I do not have access to it. I have tried the following:
    command-shift c, nothing happens
confirmed in Preferences/General that external hard drive was checked
    tried another cable
tried another port on the back of the external drive
tried to connect through the USB port
    re-started, etc.

I have same problem after installing OS 10.5.8. Disk utility sees the hard drive, the computer does not. Disk utility says invalid node structure. Volume check failed. Filesystem verify or repair failed.
That means the directory is corrupt. If you have a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, such as +Disk Warrior,+ it may be able to fix it. Otherwise, your only option is to erase and reformat the disk. They're not cheap -- Disk Warrior is about $100. And for Leopard, you need version 4.1.1 or 4.2.
I have not been able to figure out how to start a new topic here, but did find this discussion, which fits me fairly close.
Just above the list of topics, on the left, is a +Post New Topic+ option.

  • HT201737 how do you close a thumb drive that does not show in finder?

How do you close a thumb drive that does not show in finder?

What do you mean by "Close?"
    Eject??
If so, you could use Go to Computer to find it if it is not in the Sidebar or on the Desktop. Ctrl-click or Right-click on the drive and choose Eject <diskname>
Or, you could set it to show in the SideBar in the Finder Preferences, SideBar tab. Then, it would have an eject icon next to it in the Sidebar.

  • ICloud Drive Folder not showing up in Finder

Hi, I have a Macbook Air (2013) and I'm running the most up to date BETA Version of OS X Yosemite. I read somewhere that is is essentially the exact same as the newly released Yosemite. My iCloud Drive Folder is NOT showing up in my favorites in Finder. I can only access iCloud Drive when I open up Finder and then click on the "Go" button in the menubar. How can I add the iCloud Drive folder to "Favorites" in Finder??? I've read it should automatically be there but it's not. Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

iCloud drive will not show in your "Devices" section, but in the Favourites.
Your "Favourites" are hidden.  Move the pointer to the right of the word "Favorites" to reveal the hidden Hide/Show controls and unhide them.  iCloud Drive will not show as a drive, but like a cloud.

  • USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop

I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
    Any suggestions.

Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

  • External Drive Does not show any file in finder

I do not see any file in my external hard drive. It a 2TB hard drive and in info it shows 727 GB remaining. I am sure files are there but for some reason they are not showing in finder. I am using iMac 10.6.8

How does this relate to iPhoto?  You'd best ask your question in the Show Leopard forum as it's more a system/hardware issue.

  • External drive does not show up in finder/ disk utility not able to repair

    Hello,
My external drive does not show up in finder. But it appaers in DISK UTILITY. When I tried to repair it, it said:
Verify and Repair volume “ANNE HD”
    ** /dev/disk1s1 (NO WRITE)
    ** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
    ** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
Unable to read directory (Input/output error)
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
How can I back up files if the external drive is not found in FINDER? I tried to restore with disk utility, but it doesn't seem to be able to select the hard drive.
    Can you please help me?

    Thanks a lot Niel,
Diskwarrior is a program for what you need to buy a DVD. I live in Brazil I have no idea where to buy it. Or can you download it?

  • Network drives do not show up on Desktop or in Sidebar

I have a user who is experiencing a weird problem. When they connect to a Windows server over our LAN, the server does not show on their desktop, nor does it show in the sidebar.
I have checked the boxes in Finder/Preferences to show network drives on the desktop and in the sidebar, but the network drives do not show up.
I have reproduced this on another Mac, a G4 also running 10.5.8 .
The windows servers do appear in Go/Network, and the user can connect to them, but they still don't show up on the desktop or the sidebar.
Does anyone have any good ideas about this?
    Thanks in advance!

Templeton, I'm sorry if my message wasn't clear, but I have already tried that.
I'm beginning to wonder if there might be some issue with this in 10.5.8, since this works on the Macs here with Snow Leopard, and it used to work when we had Macs on earlier versions of OS X.
Again, I'm open for any ideas on this.

  • How come my hard drive is not showing up on the desktop?

How come my hard drive is not showing up on the desktop?

Those are preferences you speify from INSIDE The Finder:
    Finder > Preferences:

  • My external drive is not showing on my desktop

My external drive is not showing on my finder and it is turned on and connected by firewire.  Is there an alternate way to force my G5 to see the external drive?
    Laura

Check the settings in the General and Sidebar tabs of the Finder's preferences. If those are set properly, open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and try mounting and/or repairing the drive.
