Drive connected to SATA to eSATA converter--can this be made hot-swappable?

Hey guys, I recently acquired a new SATA drive enclosure that has USB 2.0 and eSATA interfaces. It came with a PCI bracket that converts an internal SATA port to an eSATA port. So, using one of the two unused SATA ports on the Mac Pro board, I connected the bracket and have an eSATA port.
It works great! However, it only works if the drive is powered on at boot time and if I disconnect power to the drive while the machine is on, I get odd behaviour (such as Disk Utility hanging on launch).
Does anyone know if there is a way to make this behave like a FireWire or USB drive where one can safely power it off and disconnect it while the machine is still running?
Thanks!

Yes, the Addonics 2-Port eSATAII PCI-E Controller for Mac Pro ($39.99) model ADSA3GPX1-2EM will allow you to hot swap the external SATA enclosure.

If you want SMART support the FirmTek SeriTek/2SE2-E Two Port External Serial ATA PCIe Host Adapter $99.95 will do the job.

Unfortunately, Apple built the Mac Pro without hot swap bays. At this time you will need a PCIe card to add hot swap SATA capabilities. The Addonics card adds this feature for very litttle $$$.
Have fun!

  • Connecting 2 ipods to 1 itunes - can this be done?

basically, the subject says it all. can i plug my ipod into my boyfriends itunes. what if we have one pc but 2 ipods - how does that work?
    dell   Windows XP

There are a couple of recommended methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod
Choosing the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - Selected playlists in iTunes 7) allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). You can read more about playlists at these links:

  • Photoshop flames. Can this be made into vectors.

The flame effect is what  I'm trying to create.  I know it's a common thing to do, but I would like this design on my van.
measurements for the panel on the van are  83" long x heigh 26" ...Around 30 characters are going to be used for the wording
I would like to use black background as the van color is white.  Flames look better on the black, that's my opinion any way.
    Youtube:
    photoshop flames effect
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdLU3SbVnrA
The above is the link to real world  tutorials. This is the effect I wish to have on the side of van
I can design the flames in PS ok, but the  peson who's going to do the van printing said can you do your design in vectors.
Is there any way the above can be created with vectors and not a raster

    Hey,
Would it not be easier to design the image in Photoshop, using a black background and then just apply the exact design to your van? You could even shape the overall image to the specific van panel then, without all the fuss!
I create a lot of large banner designs for people and pretty much follow the rules below:
    6x3 Banner (feet)
-600 dpi (300dpi is ok but I like attention to detail!)
-Set canvas size to 25% of the above figure. (= 457.2mm x 228.6mm)
-Ensure everything you use in the image is high rez
-Keep the text and graphics at least 5mm+ away from the edges (bleed)
    -Flatten image/save in desired format
-Email image to the printers/banner people
    -Bingo!
This might not be what your looking for but you want black around the flames to make them stand out, so why not!
Hope it all goes well buddy!

  • AD Group Change, Can this be made User self requestable in oim?

    Hi,
We have a typical requirement where in end user will be requesting for a group change in AD, on Approval he is made member of the group he requested. Can any one suggest how this can be achievable. Any pointers on this is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi all,
I had this same requirement (Approval process for AD group assignment). So, I have implemented the process you have defined. It is working fine except one problem.
When I add the first OIM group(group A) to OIM user, it will fire an approval process(using Access policy) and after the approver approve it, RO ("AD Group Resource") will be granted to the user. Also, ad information will be updated through my custom code.
But, if I then try to add another OIM group(group B) to the same OIM user, OIM will just assign OIM group to this OIM User. other than that, OIM will not do anything. No approval process will be fired.
(Note: There is no error in the implementation. i.e. if I try to do this in the other way around, i.e. first add the group B and then add the group A, same result. Information regarding assignment of group B will be updated on AD and RO will be granted. But, assignment of group A would not do anything)
Please help me regarding this issue.
    Regards,

  • Trying to backup a (network) hard drive connected to TC

    Hi,
I have a simple home network with a TC and an external hard drive connected to this. TC is used to backup my mac and laptop. All of my work is stored on the drive connected to TC.
I know that TC won't back this drive up so i purchased Chronosync. However this isn't working...what's happening is its starting to backup up to TC then it eventually comes up with an IO error...its as if the hard drive connected to TC is powering down. Chronosync even made my TC completely dissapear off my network...which is the first time this has happened!
Does anyone know of a way i can baack this drive up?...seems mad that its a pain just to get it to backup.
    Thanks in advance.

I can't help with Chronosync, sorry, but you may have a problem mixing Time Machine backups and Chronosync backups on the TC's internal HD, since you can't partition it. See #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
It may be as simple as creating a disk image on the TC's internal HD (per the blue box there), to contain Chronosync backups, if Chronosync will back up to it.

  • Formatting of drive connected to PC

Can a hard drive on a Windows PC be both read AND written to from a Mac in a network?  Is the format of the drive connected to a PC a consideration for the Mac that is communicating to it across a network?  It would seem that the PC would be doing the actual direct communication to the drive and therefore, the format would be compatible with the PC connected directly to it, not the Mac that is sending the file across the network.
    In other words...
It would seem that the hard drive would be formatted for the computer connected directly to it, not the computer accessing it across the network.  Is that true?

Hi there. You are actually correct on the last one. You just have to make sure to format the drive on the windows computer. Make sure that the windows pc and mac are on the same network or workgroup. On the mac, to access the files on the drive connected to the windows pc you can do this: you click GO on your mac and type: smb://ipaddressofthewindowspc.

  • HT4106 I have a camera connection kit for my ipad 2. Can this kit be used with my new ipad air?... If so what adapter is required please

Camera connection kit for ipad 2. Can this kit be used with ipad air and if so what adapter(s) are required please

You can try the 30 pin to lightning adapter but I'm not sure if that'll work. So if you get it to experiment, make sure you can return it. Apple does sell a SD to lightning adapter for the newer devices. So that should be a sure bet. The main downside is that your 30 pin camera kit came with both USB and SD for 29 and now the USB adapter is 19 and the SD adapter 29, so more expensive.
You may want to look into third party adapters, but make sure you use a reputable manufacturer (ie not a cheap no-name off amazon) because iOS7 brought with it software that looks for a signed chip in the adapter. And a chip is 'signed' when a company gets apple's permission to make accessories. I would suggest sticking with companies like Belkin, Kensington and Targus. They seem to be of a better reputation when making things and would have a signed chip.

  • Ethernet NAS vs. USB drive connected directly to router

I Currently stream data on a WD MyBook usb 2.0 hard drive connected to my routers USB port.  This data is streamed wirelessly to my Blu Ray and it has been pretty stable for a few years now.   If I now attach a Seagate NAS (STCT8000100) directly to the router using gigabit Ethernet what practical difference will I see? Will the NAS be as reliable or better (or worse)?  I expect that the streaming will be comparable due to the wireless part of the equation but will there be system overhead due to Ethernet vs. USB 2.0 That mucks with stability vs. my current set up?   Am I overthinking this?

Why on Earth would anyone need that much bandwidth for home usage?

  • HT204057 is there a way to use time machine with a backup drive connected to my AirPort?

is there a way to use time machine with a backup drive connected to my AirPort Extreme?

Unfortunately, this is not officially supported by Apple......if you still have the 4th Gen AirPort Extreme that you list in your equipment profile.
However, the new "tower" shaped version of the AirPort Extreme does now officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the device.

  • Since upgrading to 10.8, my mouse scroll wheel works in reverse.  When I rotate the wheel towards me, the page scrolls up.  Can this be configured or fixed?  It is not an apple mouse.

Have been happily using a Microsoft optical wheel mouse with my 27" iMac for a year or so.  Just upgraded the OS to 10.8.4.
Now, when I rotate the scroll wheel towards myself, instead of scrolling down the page, it scrolls up.  Microsoft doesn't yet have a driver for

  • How to connect a SATA Drive in a G4 MDD Desktop Mac?

Due to much more needed harddisk space for music production on my G4 1.25 GHz Dual PC, I ordered and just received a SATA 500 GB internal Harddiskdrive.
Under "About This Mac" in the System Profiler I get a list of all my internally already connected ATA Drives. But there is also a (empty) category available, named "Serial-ATA" which I strongly assume stands for SATA. I further think once such a category is existing I should be able to connect a SATA drive.
    Now:
    1. Can I connect the new SATA HD internally in my Dual G4 or must I use the Drive as an external Firewire Drive (of course in a special housing)?
    2. If it is possible to built in a SATA drive, must I buy an adapter in any form, because the interface on the SATA drive is different from the cable endings in my Mac?
    3. If so, what is such an Adapter be called (from Inerface A name to Interface B name) and do I get it at an electronic store?
    4. Is there anything crucial I do need to know regarding this matter (maybe voltage compatibility, adjustments on SATA drive or in my Macintosh G4, etc.)?
    5. And if it should not be possible to use the HD internally (as in question 1.), are there housings with Firewire 800 connectors available for SATA drives which I can use?
I would be very glad for your specialist help! Thank you!

Thank you all (Malcolm Rayfield · The hatter · Rodney Culling) so very much. I thought I would be lost and stuck - on contrary I got your huge help.
Unfortunately I bought already the SATA 7200.10 and it had been delivered. But I am very happy to hear that there are PCI SATA cards available and I preferably would like this solution to have the Drive as an internal drive. It is for me easier to tame the noise not having an additional drive in my Mini recording studio.
I will investigate into the prices of those cards and only do hope that the price for such PCI SATA cards are not to expensive otherwise my bread deliverer (boss) will refuse. He was already not excited to hear I ordered a SATA drive but there was no ATA anymore available at my usual source and if I later upgrade to a G5 I can take the drive with me. I only will have then the reverse situation using some of my older ATA drives in a new G5.
Thanks a million again for your kind and unexpected fast help. Thanks!

  • G4 MDD and WD SATA Drive Connection

G4 MDD and WD SATA Drive Connection
    My G4: G4 MDD firewire 400 model, Single 1.25 - Dual Boot. Running OS 10.3.9 and 9.2.2
I just ordered parts from OWC, on their way here. Sorry about ALL these questions but I'm new to this.
I purchase a Firmtek Seritek 1S2 controller card and 2 WD SATA Internal Drives. A - WD 640 GB SATA HD "For my Boot Drive", and a - WD 320GB SATA HD that I will use for a Scratch Drive.
    Question 1 :
The Seritek 1S2 is a 2 port "1.5GB" Card. My 2 new Drives are set to "3GB".
Will I have to change the "Jumper Settings" on the Hard Drives for this Card?
Do you know what pins to but the jumper block on?
    Question 2 :
For Power connection I also, purchased 2 - 15 pin to 4 pin power Adapters, so I wouldn't have to put the drives in upside down for better alignment for mounting the screws in the cages.
The WD Drives come with both the 4 pin connection and the 15 pin connection for power. Would using the power Adapters be alright? Is there any difference with power consumption from the HD's to the 4 pin Molex in the G4? Does this setup work alright with my machine's power requirements? And the H.D's power requirements? OR, is it better/safer to just stick with the G4's 4 pin Molex connector and put the drives in upside down?
    Question 3 :
I also purchased 2 - 18" Data cables 90 degree Left Angle, so I won't have a problem closing the door on my G4.
Which left angle end goes where for this? On the HD's or the Card?
I will be putting the 640 GB in the Rear Cage and the 320 GB in the Front Cage.
Each Cage Holds 2 drives each. For better heat protection, should I put the drives in the outer or inner drive carrier slots?
    Question 4 :
I'd figure I would place the 1S2 Card in the Third PCI slot. Does it matter which slot to put the card in?
    Question 5 :
I plan on Cloning my original 80 GB drive to my new 640 GB drive. I would be using Super Duper for this. After that I will be putting my 80 GB dive in a external firewire case I also purchased, to use it as a back up.
I was told I should keep the 80 GB drive in my G4 and Clone the drive to the new drive using Disk Utility that is in my 80 GB drive already. Using Disk Utility to Partition my drives then Format the drives both journeled. Would that work alright? Or do I have to use the Boot CD to do that?
Then I would use Super Duper to clone. Then choose the new cloned drive in system profiler to start up on that drive to see if everything is OK. Then reset the pram, and then I can remove my 80 GB to put in the case for backups. Does this sound like a good procedure to do?
Sorry for all the questions! But, this is the first time I'm doing anything like this. I would really appreciate any help I could get with these questions before I start doing this. Thanks!

Do you mean making 3 Partitions on the 640? 1- OS and Apps, 2 - 50-80 GB Free Space for Swap Files or do you mean Project files, such as Starting a Photoshop or Video File? Is that what you mean? And a third partition to store my other Data files?
With a second drive dedicated to scratch, I would install the OS and all applications on one partition. If the total software requirements are 50GB, I would make a 100-150GB partition. I think larger would be better, so as software and OS needs don't overlap as software is running. The 50-80GB free space is *included with* the OS and applications.
With the remaining 450-500GB, I would leave as one partition for all project files and data to be placed on. If one type of file dominates all other, for instance, photo files, I might consider splitting that remainder for a dedicated photo file volume, with a third partition for the rest.
When deciding on the OS/App's partition size, try to anticipate near future software install. Don't want to run out of room.
For instance, I have a SATA WD Raptor as my boot drive. OS and applications only, with approx 60GB of OS and software, and the rest free space (of the formatted 140GB total of the 150GB drive.
On a second drive, a SATA WD 640GB, I have three partitions- 100GB for data, documents, mail, etc., one 300GB for photos, and one 200GB for music.
A third drive, a SATA 300GB Maxtor, is used for PS scratch, as a target for scans, music file encoding, target for downloads, any file that is "temporary" in nature. When work is done, the files are moved to the respective locations, and the drive is cleared.
I also have a fourth ATA Seagate 120GB drive, that I keep OS 9, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 each on a respective partition, with necessary and OS specific applications for each OS. This serves as my troubleshooting/emergency boot volume.
This helps keep me organized, and allows plenty of free space for system operation.
There are lots of different ways to set up ones drives, but I find that my current setup gives me the desired performance and keeps me from getting cluttered.
A final note, with whatever setup you create, have the appropriate sized external drives for backups of all drive volumes. I use firewire and eSATA connected SATA WD 640GB, ATA Seagate 500GB, and an ATA Maxtor 160GB for cloning all my files, systems and app's.

  • SATA hard drive connection problem

Has anyone ever had a problem with SATA cables when installing new hard drives?
I have an early 2008 iMac with the original 250-Gb Western Digital Caviar hard drive. I installed a new 1-Tb WD Green drive in it yesterday but it will not boot from the new drive. The mac will not even recognized the presence of the drive (flashing question mark). I cloned the original drive and have confirmed that it was partitioned correctly (GUID).
The new drive WILL boot up when connected as an external USB drive with a universal connector.
The original drive will boot up when reinstalled in the iMac, but it is not recognized if I put the new drive in and have the original drive connected as a USB drive.
I started the mac from a DVD and did a clean install of the operating system. I booted with the iMac as a target drive. My Powerbook couldn't see the new drives either.
I went out and bought a new Seagate Barricuda 1Tb drive. The SAME result. Will not boot internally. Will boot as an external drive.
BOTH new drives power up and are spinning. They will both boot the computer when connected using a SATA to USB converter (externally).
MY THEORY is that the SATA connection is at fault. There are no visible defects and all the connections seem tight, but that's the only reason I can think of.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can test the connection? Is there any reason that the orginal drive's SATA connector would not fit the two new drives differently?
    HELP!!!

Right if its SATA, use SATA1, go into Bios, Integrated Peripherals (manual page 3-20) - enable PATA IDE and SATA IDE(the via controllers), set floppy to auto. go to ONBOARDPCI controller - P20378 S ATA controller (the promise controller) and set to disabled, EXIT  back to main bios screen, then advanced bios features, set boot sequence to floppy, CD, BB1(SATA,if shown, HDD if not), then enable other boot devices, and enable floppy seek.
    EXIT and SAVE
Have WinXP CD in CD drive, at first install screen F6, wait for S screen, use both Via SATA drivers for XP, once you have loaded 2 nd one enter - F8 page and setup page, PARTITION and FORMAT, ( format takes secs) then install. When it resets it should show menu with XP on it, and the 25 sec countdown, enter.
One point the SATA drive connections are poor, slightest movement will cause data corruption, or a sharp bend in cable. make sure connectors are fully home squarely on mobo and drive.
    Should be OK.
Either email or here if you need help
    cheers
