  • Fixing Corrupted Library

A week or two ago I made some editing changes to an image and when I attempted to save it the progress bar froze part way through the save. After asking for advice on this forum I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and attempted to rebuild the iPhoto Library. This operation took several hours and when finished I got an error message saying that 1,534 photos were successfully opened and 4,462 errors occured.
Unsure what to do about this I decided in the meantime to create a new Library so that I could download some images in my camera without making things worse in the current Library. When I attempted to do this iPhoto hung after downloading only 10 of the 302 images in my camera.
This seemed odd so I checked my external hard drive space and discovered that although the partition was 103 GB in size there was only 83.3 MB available. Best guess now is that this lack of hard drive space is what caused the whole problem in the first place.
Having ordered a new 500 gig external hard drive I am wondering how best to proceed when it arrives. Am I correct in assuming I can just drag and drop my current screwed up iPhoto Library file on to the new drive and then use Library Manager to rebuild the library? Also, if this doesn't fix things I do have a number of backups of my Library6.iPhoto file to fall back on. Can I safely overwrite the current screwed up Library6.iPhoto file by simply dragging and dropping the backup on to it and then saying yes to the "overwrite this file" message.
    Thanks,

    Quite likely.

No. When iPhoto Library Manager failed to rebuild the last time it’s because the database is so damaged that it couldn’t track those 4,400 other pics. That damage is done. Simply moving the Library won’t fix that.

Yes, this is worth a try. Copy the Library to the new disk first (that way the other copy will be a back up) and try it.
If that fails you’ll need to manually rebuild the Library:
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and make a new Library on the external disk.
Go into the damaged iPhoto Library and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the damaged iPhoto Library.

  • Drive not found in library database

    Greetings.
I'm new to OSB and am having tape drive, volume problems.
File system backups only complete successfully when drive (IBM4_0_0_1_1) is used. When OSB attempts to use other drives in the library it logs the following errors listed in "Transcript".
I'm running OSB (10.4.0.3.0) on a Linux server (Oracle Linux Server release 6.0) with a SL500 library controller by a ACSLS(8.3.0) server.
    Please advise.

    Thanks for your response.
ACSLS is part of the configuration requirements I need to have in this OBS environment.
I'm going to re install OBS just to see if anything changes.
    Thanks again.
    Update:
When configuring devices in OSB that are ACSLS in nature it is a requirement to restart the obacslibd after mkdev or certain chdev commands are preformed.
After the daemon was restarted I was able to use the attached tape drives.

  • Erased/Corrupted Library Database

    Wow...
    Hey everybody,
I opened up my computer and Itunes, and my library is no longer there... ITunes is empty.
My Ipod has everything on it, and my ITUNES music folder has all my mp3s, etc. in it.
I don't know why, but my Itunes Library file is only 6 kb... Usually it's much bigger, right?!!! I also see a TMP file "Temp File 3" in that folder that is close to 2 MB, and I'm wondering if that somehow has all my library information... and if there is a way to recover that information.
My worst case scenario would be to just add all the music folders into ITUNES, and I'd still have my music... But I would lose my organized playlists, playcounts, Date Added, etc... which I am really hesitant about doing!
I'd really appreciate it if anybody could tell me how to
either 1. recover whatever info is in that TMP file (which is dated 11:30 PM yesterday.... when i shut down my computer last) if it could be used to rebuild my library
    2. a way to recover the info from IPOD (playlists, playcounts, Date added) to be used with all the music I already have in my folder...
My last library backup file is from September!!
    THANKS IN ADVANCE>>> ~~~~~~~

These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
iPodRip Software (Free trial: Mac & Windows)
    PodUtil Software (Mac & Windows)
YamiPod Software (Free: Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple & Free Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to ‘Manually manage songs & playlists’ – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod (or the lower ‘\iPod_Control’ sub-folder)
    10 - Click OK
-- The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes with its correct information
–-- This will take some time depending on your PC’s speed and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • I to use iphoto library manager to save corrupted iphoto and each time it saves some and the first time it brings up iphoto, iphone goes into "not responding" mode.  Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2.

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding."  Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.

I am trying to drag libraries (with metadata) to external HD...wondering what the best way to do that is?

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,

help how can i stop it from importing the duplicates?

my iphoto library database was corrupted with one image taking over every other image on the database
What exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean one thumbnail only was visible in the iPhoto Window? What? This is the sort of thing that's fixed easily by an iPhoto rebuild. Gives us some more information and we may be able to help with that - iPhoto version and a description of exactly what's happening will help.
i ticked no to importing duplicate images and yet it is still importing many duplicates including the photo which took over my old iphoto library
A couple of thoughts here: If the iPhoto Library is corrupted and Aperture is importing from this damaged Library well you can't expect that it will all go easily, can you?
The iPhoto Library contains two versions of edited photos. Are you sure that you're not seeing the second version?

  • New Hard Drive - Problems with iPhoto Library

I recently had to replace my hard drive. I've updated my software (I think) back to what I had before the crash. I've retrieved my photos from my external hard drive. However, when I try to open iPhoto, I get the message "You can't open your current photo library with this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." I think I'm running version 6.0.6 of iPhoto.
I can find the pictures on my hard drive (it looks like they're in my iPhoto library), but cannot get iPhoto to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I have lost my photos/videos when i imported from my ipad 2 to my new imac latest version and it's not reading the files.  I have downloaded iMac library manager and can see them. can someone shed some light please ?

i have lost my photos/videos when i imported from my ipad 2 to my new imac latest version OS X 10.8.4
and it's not reading the files.  I have downloaded iMac library manager and can see them.  when i go back into iphoto i'm getting the following message :
Do you want to switch the current iPhoto Library from “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” to “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” and relaunch iPhoto?
I don't know what to do - please help !!!!
can someone shed some light please ?

So it appears you have only one library on the hard drive. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed to that library:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Aperture 3 VS. iPhoto Library management policies

Let me start this off with the fact that I am new to the whole Mac scene.  I am used to the PC world of managing everything neatly in folders and subfolders inside My Pictures folder.  In PC land I was using importing everything automaticaly  with my Nikon software.  I seriously miss its ability to lable my folders exactly as I wanted them.  I could then use whatever software I needed to edit from simple stuff with my Nikon software suite, to Correl Draw, to Photoshop.  Sonce everything was left in the same folders, "library managment" was much simpler.  Manually going in and moving pictures around was easy.  Before the switch to Apple, I spent many many hours researching and studying.
So I have been usign my new MacBook Pro exclusivly for about 6 months now and still can not get my libraries organized as effectivly as I would like.  The whole lack of one central folder location, has me thrown off.  Okay lets start with my questions.  I have a pile of them, so my apologies in advance...
    1)  Can I use one library for both applications?  I started off with iPhoto, then purchased Aperture 3 as soon as it was avalible.  I see that deleting fluff in one does not currently correspond to the other program.  When setting up Aperture, I imported my iPhoto library.  It seems to me that it doubled the amount of space used for my photos...
    2)  From what I have read, I am lead to understand that iPhoto is less of a space hog.  It saved layers of edits over the pictures, while Aperture 3 saves each as a new photo.  All done seamlessly behind the scenes.  Is this correct?
    3)  When I imported the iPhoto library to Aperture, it forgot all my faces I had named.  Yes I have Aperture setup to see the faces thing... I think.   Can I fix this simply without going through the whole naming process again?
    4)  Can I "manually" import/export the librarys simply by dropping them to the desktop, and renaming them then dropping them back in the picutres folder?
I would like to really consolidate and trim down the space being used.  I have over 100 gigs of photos per library and that is being VERY choosy about what I save.  All my professional work I shoot in RAW.  As for the two programs, I see no real reason to keep iPhoto, as it seems all the other software programs like mail and iWork integrate just as well with Aperture.
    5)  How do I set a high quality desktop image from my own librarys?  This is super frustrating!!!  The only way I can seem to get high resolution pictures reliably, is if I can figure out how to open it in Safari, then set as a desktop.    Sometimes using system preferances it will work, but mostly I get really low resolution shots that look like maybe they are blown up preview or thumbnail images.  Even delibertly using the same shot and trying to find it in the multiple locations I find, I can't seem to duplicate a process that gets me a clean shot via System Preferances.  It seems that the iPhoto versions are higher quality.
I have gigs woth of personal shots I would love to browse through and use, but everytime it is a huge headache to do so....  I think most of my issues here are in understandign how to navigate the pictures in the Mac OS X.  I think ideally I would like to dump iPhoto and stick to just Aperture.  Mostly, I am loving the way all the programs in OS X seem to integrate and work together.  Just having some serious stumbling blocks with the photography apects, and that was the primary reason I switched to a Mac.
    6)  So will the rest of the software like iMovie, iWeb, Mail, and Garage Band work as well with Aperture as iPhoto?
I need to sort out all the above issues and decide what direction to go and how to go about rebuilding my libraries.  I have gigs worth of older family shots, downloaded images, freinds photography, and other random images I would like to keep seperated from my professional work.  Aperture is without a dought a much better program for my professional, and daily use.  I am just having issues accessign my work directly like I used to do on the PC no matter what program on the Mac I am working with.

I'll try to help you out a bit more:
First I'd recommend a post here by Kirby Krieger
This will get you on par with Aperture workflow and nomenclature. I can only reccomend you a good book if you're able to understand Dutch ;-) And BTW a book or manual is easier to pause then a video ;-)
The Well-trod Path. Walk it unless you have a map for a different route.
The Library is your image database. It contains all the information Aperture has about your images: where they are stored on your computer/drives/network, how you have them organized within Aperture, what adjustments you have made to them, all the pre-Aperture metadata (EXIF, IPTC, keywords, etc.) they had before you imported them into Aperture, and all the Aperture metadata (Version names, ratings, color labels, Stacks, additional keywords, etc.) you assign to them from within Aperture. The Library also contains small copies of each image (in effect, thumbnails, but in Aperture larger than actual thumbnails and called "Previews").
The image is the core record in your Aperture database. The database is a giant list of images with a whole bunch of information assigned to each image.
Within Aperture you can view individual images and any grouping of images. You can create a group based on any of the information you have about your images.
The Project is your primary image holder. It has a unique, privileged relationship with your images: Every image must be in a Project; No image can be in more than one Project. You should make a Project from every actual, out-in-the-world photo shoot that you do. Shoot=Project. Stick to this (the mis-naming of "Project" is one of the worst interface decisions made in Aperture).
You will regularly want to view your images in groups other than the Project in which they reside. Aperture provides several specific containers for this (as well as superb tools for creating ad hoc groupings). As a family, those containers are Albums. Aperture includes (regular) Albums, Smart Albums, and the following albums dedicated to special tasks: Book, Light Table, Slide Show, Web Journal, Web Page. Any image can be in any album, and can be in as many albums as you want.
As your Aperture database grows, you will want to organize your Projects and Albums. Aperture provides Folders to aid you. Folders hold groups of Projects, Albums, and other Folders. Folders cannot contain images which are not in a Project or Album: You do not put images in Folders; you put containers in Folders.
The organization of your image database is entirely for you to customize for your needs.
There are two additional pieces of the Aperture puzzle every new user needs to understand in order to make good use of it.
In additional to what I listed above, your Library may or may not contain your original image files. Each image in Aperture has an original. Aperture is non-destructive -- your original image files are never altered. If the original image file is contained within your Library, it is called a Managed Master (Aperture's pointer to this file, and the file itself, are both inside the Library). If the original image file is not contained within your Library, it is called a Referenced Master (the pointer in your Aperture Library points to a file outside your Aperture Library). Referenced Masters bring some important advantages -- but the new user of Aperture can rely on Managed Masters until the need for Referenced Masters arises. Aperture makes is easy to convert your original image files back and forth from Managed to Referenced.
A Version is the name given to the variants and copies you make of you original image within Aperture. You use Aperture's tools to make Adjustments to images. Each group of adjustments you make to one image is saved as a Version. You can (and should) create as many Versions as you need. Versions appear as images, but are simply text instructions which tell Aperture what Adjustments to make to the original image file. Aperture presents these to you on-the-fly. This is brilliant. It means that Versions are minuscule compared to Masters. The gain in storage and computational efficiency is enormous.
This also means that your images in Aperture do not exist as image format files. In order to create an image format file, you must export the image from within Aperture. There is no reason to do this until you need an image format file outside of Aperture.
Aperture, then, is best understood as a workspace for
       storing
        organizing
        adjusting
        preparing for publication, and
        publishing
    digital photographs.
    Your workflow is
        shoot
        import as Project(s)
        add image-specific metadata
organize into Albums, organize Albums and Projects with Folders
make adjustments to images (crop, rotate, change exposure, etc. etc. etc)
        prepare for publication
        publish.
If you still need to synchronize between computers (which or NOT running Aperture) you could still be using your old folder structure. Import then from the _raw folder, organize and manage them in Aperture and use relocate masters to move them to the correct position. In Aperture you could setup a Project per shoot, and then (Smart)albums in that project for what used to be subfolders when you where working on Windows. For synchronizing between Aperture using computers it best to copy libraries. (You can export a project as a new library as well)
Then for other RAW converters, take a look at why people recommend CaptureNX. It's mostly because of initial conversion. That is because CapertureNX is able to read in camera settings whereas other converters cannot. For some Nikon's color rendering in Aperture might be a bit of, but you can correct that while developing. Personally I had only one occasion where I wanted to edit in ACR instead of Aperture. (Because I needed a gradient adjustment and Aperture at that time did not have brushes yet) As you mentioned yourself already, one converter is usually the best choice. Pick one that suits you and stick with it.
For HDR, there are some plugins for that, otherwise export to 16-bit TIFF (which is essentially RAW), do the HDR in PS and import back again. Not that big-a-deal.
For there rest, when you encounter some problems anywhere on the Mac, think of the easiest solution you can imagine, that usually how it works on the Mac. That why you hardly ever have to leave your Aperture interface while organizing your photo's.

  • Will Photo Library Manager help without library file

I recently upgraded to Leopard and added ilife to upgrade my iphoto from a reeaaally old version. I imported photos from the old version and Iphoto was working fine a couple weeks ago. Today, however, when I tried to open it, I got the Choose Your Library message. There is no library listed, nor can I find one. I have not done anything to iphoto or the library file since it was last opened and working fine. Will Photo Library Manager help if there is no library file? Is the albumdata.xml file in the iphoto database or is it somewhere else in my computer? Surely the files are there somewhere! What else can I do? I have a back-up but it has run since I last opened iphoto and I can't find a library file in there either. What is the library file called? Maybe I'm not looking for the write thing...
Thanks for your help. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Did you use Spotlight to try to find your library. If the library was inadvertantly moved to certain areas of the HD Spotlight will not find it. Download and run Find File to search for "Library6.iPhoto". If you get a hit it's a good chance it's the library. Good Luck.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Getting this Error: There was an error opening the database for the library

I keep getting an error with start up (There was an error opening the database for the library). The command + option - double click does not provide options for database rebuild or repair, just the same error message.
I have been using Aperture 3 since it was released without problems until now. The library size is about 450GB.
Has anyone found a file or something within the library that was corrupt? Or any manual method to fix the issue?

I have had the same problem as you have had, but I managed to restore. After having upgraded to 3.1, Aperture performed a irreversible update of the library. I then made a backup to a vault (which also was was updated). So far so good. A few days later when opening Aperture I got again the dialoge box saying Aperture had to update the library to 3.1 - and then came the error message. When trying to open the backup vault directly, I got the same message.
What I did was opening another library (creating a new one will also do). Aperture was now in a state where it was running with a few pictures in the library. I then performed a vault restore from the 3.1 backup. Fortunately, this did the job.
I actually taught that both the library and the vault was corrupted, and I am really happy that I managed to restore. Tomorrow I am going out to buy several new hard disks for my new multiple vault backup strategy to cope with the new threat: Aperture library self-corruption.

  • Alternatives for library management?

Clearly, Apple has decided that from now on iTunes is a music player only, designed it for use primarily on small screens, and taken steps to remove most of it's functionality to manage large libraries.  Many of the removed features were those which helped maintain (duplicate finder) and organize (multiple windows, lack of detailed view of fields except in song view), and navigate (any time you change a list or view, you go to the top of the page rather than returning to where you were).  What's left is a program that is bright and pretty on a small screen and makes it easy to buy and play new music.  Clearly, they are positioning the product as a good-looking alternative for when they introduce a streaming service.
While the program has never been ideal for managing large libraries it has been "good enough" to preclude the development of many alternatives for the relatively small percentage of users with more than 10,000 songs or those with extremely varied or classical music tastes, especially since it was closely linked to the store and could easily sync with Apple products.
Although my immediate reaction was, like so many others, to revert to 10.7, the Apple ecosystem is such that eventually there will be no option but to give in to a later version.  Already, many of the Mac apps will not work on my OS X 10.6.8 , 2G of RAM mini, and to move to OS X 10.8 will, according to all accounts, require a new machine with more memory.
So far, my search for something to use as a "back end" data manager for iTunes seems to have turned up WinAmp for Mac, Songbird, and Doubletwist. Can anyone provide insight on any or all of these programs, specifically on issues such as field customization, sorting and playlist creation, and whether or not they can intergrate well enough with iTunes that I can still use it to sync my iPod and download podcasts and iTunes U materials while doing my maintenance and organizing on the alternate program? Or are there other programs out there that I may have missed?
After having spent far too much of the last week restoring as much functionality as I can to iTunes 11, I'm hoping to finally get back to the rest of my life and look forward to useful responses to help put an end to this unwelcome distraction forced on me by Apple.

    Thanks for the response.
The reason I'm concerned about rolling back the version is that I have reached the limits of my 1T external drive and need more capacity.  My original thought was to just get a new mini with a bigger external drive.  I've begun having "hiccups" with the existing media drive (it's read a lot of CD's over the years).  Now, neither the mini nor the Mac come with drives, and even the diehard Apple people who buy their usb external drive through Apple give it only a 3 star rating.  So, whatever way I go, changes and $$ are at hand.  My understanding is, if I get a new machine with Mountain Lion (or Constipated Goat, or whatever the latest aninal is -- OS X 10.8) iTUnes 11 is integrated and basically can't be removed.  Also, I've synced my iPod classic (which they seem to be ready to drop any day -- no updated models in a couple of product cycles) with iTunes 11 and from what I've been reading, even though there are methods for rolling back the program, it is much harder to get the devices to roll back, and that seems to be the point where people are losing access to their material.
The reason itunes was acceptable before and is not now is that Apple has essentially decided for us that we don't need any of the, for lack of a better phrase, database managemtn functions, that those of us with large libraries have come to depend on.  My wife already says I spend way too much time with my 65,000 song and lecture library, and the new iTunes adds three to four additional steps to almost everything I want to do.
To browse the store, I have to leave the playlist I'm playing.  If I spot a song or an album that looks interesting, to check if I've already got some or all of it, I need to leave the store, get to the songs list under the main library, do my search, go back to the store and then, if I make a pruchase, go back to the music library and then click back to the playlist I've been listening to (unless I finished with what I started listening and want to change where I am, in which case, I have to go through the process of changing windows that many more times.  And, of course, everytime I do change a window, I have to scroll back to where I was.
When loading in a new CD, aside from all the back and forth in screens, at the end (now that I've reinstated the sidebar and figured out how to show downloads) it defaults to album view which, if you've got songs and spoken audio material from 2500 sources, is to all intents and purposes, useless.  So you go to yet another window (songs, which is the only window which allows you to search on more than one field) to see if you've ended up with any duplicates, which you have to do by searching because they've removed that feature as well.
Get the idea?  Not only are uselful and functional features removed, but even many of those that remain have to be discovered by trial and error.  I come from the era of top 40 radio -- the same few songs over and over, and next week the new batch of songs is out and the old ones discarded, gone to who-cares where.  That, essentially, is what they've done to iTunes by removing all the features that made managing your media easier in favor of only those features that make buying and playing the newest thing as easy as possible.
BTW, I would have no problem moving to Android if I can find the software I need.  I've been using PC's since the DOS command line days, and basically did not move into Apple's sphere until I got my 160 Gig iPod.  If I can find another device as small and with as big a drive, and a system to manage my music with, fine by me.  Apple clearly no longer wants me or all the music I've bought from them any longer.
