Drive Disappointment

Four Maxtor MaxLine 500 arrived from newegg and I eagerly installed them in my MacPro (the stock drive removed and to be kept as a emergency/firmware boot drive). Was looking forward to setting up a RAID system, based on the assistance of many on this forum.
Problem - only 3 of the 4 drives show up in DiskUtility. The drive in Bay 4 was ignored. I took out all the drives, then placed the problem drive in Bay 1 - and booted from an external firewire and the Install DVD - still nothing. Any ideas? When I go to System Profile, it shows 6 S-ATA buses (not sure if that is the right word), but no disk in any of them. I guess it is possible the drive was DOA, but that has not been my experience with Maxtor. I am running AHT right now to see if that will help, but I would welcome any other troubleshooting suggestions.
Thanks.

Drives are sensitive electronic devices. Treat them like a carton of eggs. There doesn't need to be visible damage. One reason I don't buy from Newegg, a lot of people do, is the only drives I had trouble with were OEM and had 1 yr warranty.
I love the box that OWC shipped drives in, solid sturdy plastic form that offers better protection and designed for multiple drives. IBM also uses same sturdy black plastic that suspends the drive in the case. WDC - never had trouble but I thought it was very... questionable, especially for 10K Raptor. And when I ordered multiple drives, same model? they shipped separately ;-(
Trouble with replacement drives is they are allowed to be refurbished at the vendors choice (even Seagate does this).

  • Mac-maniac Mark's maddening MacBook and Apple aggravations!

Hello! I've been a Mac fan for over a decade. Less than a year ago I got myself a MacBook, having finally found enough reason and money to upgrade to OS X.
Since then I've mostly been happy with my purchases, but I have accumulated certain problems that are steadily driving me nuts.
As a rather timid computer science student, I've tried to troubleshoot things myself rather than make a fuss, but I've made little progress so far. Please help me!
Here's what's been on my mind:
••• I ordered my MacBook over the phone from George Hurley, an Apple salesman who promised me a total of £160 in rebates if I bought an iPod and a printer at the same time.
I chose a first-generation 2 GiB iPod nano and a HP Photosmart C4180. I downloaded, filled in and posted the required forms within the deadline.
Since then, Apple sent me several letters rejecting my rebate applications. I completed the forms again, but to no avail. They ridiculously suggest I call some premium-rate number to ask why they can't get their act together. Just give me my money!
••• A month or so ago, after I let my MacBook's battery go flat, its built-in keyboard and track-pad stopped working, despite the fact that I plugged it in to the mains and the Mac worked with my external keyboard and mouse.
I tried resetting various things according to the instructions, but it stayed that way until the next morning, when it was fully-charged and mysteriously started working normally.
A few days ago I upgraded its RAM from 512 MiB to 2 GiB. Crucial delivered promptly and I installed it myself. The new RAM seems to be recognised and working, but the built-in keyboard and track-pad stopped working immediately afterwards.
I can't seem to revive them this time. As you can imagine, it's pretty silly needing an external keyboard and mouse for a portable computer. I have an AppleCare warranty. What should I do?
••• My iPod nano hasn't seen heavy use and I fitted it with a soft plastic cover shortly after getting it. Cosmetically it's fine but its performance is gradually worsening.
Sometimes it crackles or the screen freezes or it refuses to play a track all the way through. I use it with cheap headphones but they seem to work well enough elsewhere (they don't crackle).
••• Having put up with obsolete stuff for years, I'm now obsessed with installing the latest software and firmware updates. Even so, my MacBook's optical drive disappoints me when I do occasionally use it.
It is so slow to mount and eject CDs. Is this normal for portable drives? If I put in a CD it doesn't like (some of my old CD-Rs are going bad!), it whizzes for ages with a useless spinning cursor (I want to multitask!) before spitting it out.
••• I'm much happier with my new Apple software than hardware. The software does, however, come with these stupid flaws:
I can reduce my MacBook's speed to that of treacle by putting a big-enough number into the Dashboard calculator. (For example, try 999,999,999 x 999,999,999 then press = more than 13 times.) It would be bad enough for the calculator to crash, but it instead makes the MacBook need a restart.
My iTunes Artwork screen-saver only picks one piece of artwork from each album, which is a shame. System Preferences crashes persistently if I set the number of rows of artwork to two, which is ridiculous. I had to edit a plist file by hand to increase the number of rows.
My iPod refuses to play even slightly-unusual sound files (such as a WAV that some loon recorded at 8012 Hz). iTunes will play these files and copy them to the iPod without warning me of any potential problems.
iTunes also crashes without any meaningful messages when asked to convert these strange files. It leaves me to figure out what went wrong, convert the files using some other program, then remove any half-converted rubbish from its library folder.
And why doesn't iTunes convert WMA files even with the appropriate QuickTime plug-in (Flip4Mac) installed? How do I report these silly flaws? If Apple helps me and ensures that nobody else has these problems, they may gain my respect once again.
First-generation white MacBook 2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Bought with 80 GB HD and Superdrive; recently upgraded to 2 GiB RAM

I'll attempt to deal with a couple of your questions...
I can reduce my MacBook's speed to that of treacle by putting a big-enough
number into the Dashboard calculator. (For example, try 999,999,999 x
999,999,999 then press = more than 13 times.) It would be bad enough for
the calculator to crash, but it instead makes the MacBook need a restart.
Why would you use the dashboard calculator to figure this out. I don't think there are that many calculators that can figure that out too quickly. There is also a calculator program in the applications folder which might be quicker, but even that would bog down with 999,999,999 to the 14th.
My iPod nano hasn't seen heavy use and I fitted it with a soft plastic cover ?
shortly after getting it. Cosmetically it's fine but its performance is
    gradually worsening.
Sometimes it crackles or the screen freezes or it refuses to play a track all
the way through. I use it with cheap headphones but they seem to work
well enough elsewhere (they don't crackle).
While it *****, I would restore the iPod to the original settings. You might get more answers regarding this in the iPod forum.
A few days ago I upgraded its RAM from 512 MiB to 2 GiB. Crucial delivered
promptly and I installed it myself. The new RAM seems to be recognized
and working, but the built-in keyboard and track-pad stopped working
    immediately afterwards.
I can't seem to revive them this time. As you can imagine, it's pretty silly
needing an external keyboard and mouse for a portable computer. I have
an AppleCare warranty. What should I do?
Did you try the old Ram to see if the keyboard and trackpad are working with it? Also there is a setting in preferences to ignore the built-in trackpad if there is an external one being used so I would check that as well. Other than that you do have the applecare, so you can always get it checked out for free.

  • Disappointing Nokia Drive+ battery charging experi...

We have many threads about the phone dropping charge while on the charger so I decided to order a good quality 2.1 amp charger and use it with the OEM cable.
I drove a route that takes about 18-20 minutes with the charger and I gained about 8% battery charge in the process.  This was actually quite good compared to some previous driving chargers.
Then I returned on the same route with Nokia Drive+ turned on.  This is the updated version that was just released today.  By the time my route was over I lost 4% battery charge while on the charger.
To contrast, I can run waze (3D turn by turn nav app) on my iPhone 4 and gain charge at the same time.

I've had a few more mixed results.  However, I'm not sure if is app version related.
Yesterday I updated Nokia Drive+ from a link posted on WPCentral as they reported the update before it hit the store.  That is what I ran my first test on.  Then the app store notified me about an update again.  It reinstalled for a second time.  This time my settings had to also be reset.
Anyway, the next time I tested the battery usage I acutally gained some charge for the first half and then I lost the charge again for a net wash on battery charge.  What was interesting is the half of the trip where I gained charge was rather slow driving.
The next run I did I lost 1% charge but the phone didn't get super hot either.

  • When I click on a picture I get a different one. However on my external hard drive there doesn't seem to be this problem. VERY frustrating and disappointing.

My pictures appear to be a jumbled mess on my mac. What's going on? The picture I click on is not the one that appears. Thanks for any help.

If you see a message about rebuilding your thumbnail cache
Over time, iPhoto can become less efficient at accessing the photos in your library. Rebuilding the cache can help iPhoto display your photos faster, and can also resolve issues such as thumbnails that appear to be dimmed or missing.
After upgrading iPhoto, you might see a message asking if you want to rebuild your thumbnail cache. You can choose whether to do it then or come back to it later.
Important:  You should back up your iPhoto library before rebuilding your thumbnail cache.
    Hide
    To rebuild your thumbnail cache:
If iPhoto is open, quit it.
Hold down the Option and Command keys while you open iPhoto (click the iPhoto icon in the Dock). The Rebuild Photo Library window opens.
Select at least these two checkboxes:
Rebuild the photos’ small thumbnails: This option rebuilds only the small versions of the thumbnails, such as those that appear in the photo browser when you are creating a book or slideshow.
Rebuild all of the photos’ thumbnails: This option rebuilds all the thumbnails associated with a photo, including the small ones and the thumbnails that appear in a photo album or an Event.
For information about the remaining checkboxes, visit the iPhoto Support websiteand search for “rebuilding the iPhoto library.”
Click Rebuild.Rebuilding the thumbnail cache may take several minutes.

  • I was given the wrong macbook when I gave mine in for repair.  I want to complain.  Also, they wiped ALL my data off the hard drive.  I want to complain to someone in authority.  How?

I am extremely disappointed and angry with Apple service.  I am a writer and booked three weeks in Spain so that I could finish my book.  On the second day my laptop cut out on me asI was working on it, so I took it to Goldenmack in Cadiz.  Not only was I given someone else's macbook when I went back to collect it, but then when I returned to the UK, the Apple shop in Brighton managed to delete ALL my data from the hard drive because I was unlucky enough to get a trainee on her first day.  I have since learned she should not have deleted my data without even running a diagnostic.  She told me she was going to 'restore' the drive.  I took this to mean she was going to restore my work.  But no!  She erased the lot.
I complained and eventually was put in touch with a supervisor, who I was told  had authority to resolve the issue. She said she would get the shop to phone me.  That was ten days ago and I'm still waiting.
Ok so there's nothing I can do now to get back the three chapters of my book that I have lost and didn't back up, but the  hard drive on this laptop is still faulty.  I try to back up my work every time I use the machine but as soon as I attach an external drive, the whole thing shuts down. I can't use it any more as I can't risk losing any more work.    This laptop is only just over a year old and this is just not acceptable, especially since I have really looked after it.
This is an appalling service I have encountered from Apple, and I am not going to ignore it.  I have contacted the young chap whose laptop I was erroneously given, and the repair of which I paid for! (although I did eventually get a refund),  to ask him if he had been given mine as well.  He said he had been completely unaware that his laptop had been given to me and he is furious as he had loads of "sensitive material" on it."  I have no idea in whose hands my laptop has been either, or indeed what damage it sustained while it was supposed to be in for repair.

    Contact Apple Support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
Apple - How to Contact Us:

Be sure to refer to the repair ticket number.
    Sounds like a terrible mixup.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • [Guide] Install and run Windows 7/8 from an external drive without using bootcamp (works for late 2012 iMacs with 3TB drive)

This is a copy of a post from my blog, you can also Read it on my blog...
    Introduction
After I received my new iMac with a 3 TB Fusion Drive, I was disappointed when I realized that Bootcamp was not running on this model and prevented me from installing Windows on it. I wanted to take advantage of the powerful iMac hardware to play games but I couldn't.
There are a few ways of working around this limitation, but I found most of them quite complex and most of the time they required formatting the internal hard drive or repartitioning it and go for a brand new installation of Mac OS X. I was not comfortable with that.
But there is another way, and that is to install Windows on an external hard drive, using either USB or Thunderbolt. Personally I used a Lacie Rugged 1 TB drive that has both USB3 and Thunderbolt connectors. Both work very well.
This guide may interest you if:
You have an internal hard drive of more than 2TB and you can't run bootcamp at all (like late 2012 iMacs with a 3TB drive)
You have limited space or you don't want to dedicate disk space on your internal hard disk drive to a Windows installation
What this guide will make you do:
It will make you erase all your data from your external USB3/Thunderbolt hard drive
It will make you install Windows on your external USB3/Thunderbolt hard drive
It will make you install bootcamp drivers
What this will not make you do:
It will not make you modify anything on your internal Mac hard drive
It will not make you use or install the bootcamp assistant
It will not activate the Preference Pane for the default boot drive. You have to boot by pressing the ALT key to manually select your boot drive each tome you want to boot Windows.
    What you'll need
An external hard drive with a USB3 and/or Thunderbolt connector. This drive will be formatted so ensure you saved your files before going further. You can use either an SSD drive or a classic hard drive.
A Windows 7 or 8 install DVD or ISO (check whether to install 32 or 64 bits versions based on your Bootcamp drivers) and the corresponding Windows serial number.
    One of the following:
Mac OS X with a Windows 7 or 8 Virtual Machine (use VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop for example. Note: VMWare Fusion seems to have some issues with Thunderbolt and USB3. Plug your drive to a USB2 enclosure or hub to work around this -it worked for me-, or use another VM software) → Read the important note below
A PC running Windows 7 or 8 → Read the important note below
Windows AIK (free) running on your Virtual Machine or on your PC, or just the imagex.exe file (the rest of the Windows AIK package is not needed)
Download Windows AIK (this download and installation is not required if you have already downloaded imagex.exe)
Bootcamp drivers for your Mac. You can get these either by running bootcamp from your Mac (Applications > Utilities > Bootcamp) or, if like me you have a 3TB drive and can't run bootcamp at all, use the direct download links here.
A USB stick to store your bootcamp drivers
IMPORTANT: If your Mac has a 64 bits processor, your Windows Virtual Machine on OSX, your Windows installation on your PC and your Windows DVD/ISO must also be in 64 bits!
    Step by Step guide
Step 1: Get the install.wim file
If you have a Windows ISO file:
    Mount the ISO
If you're on OS X: double click on the ISO file
If you're on on Windows 7: Use a software like Virtual Clone Drive (free)
If you're on Windows 8: double click on the ISO file
Open the mounted drive, then go to the "sources" folder and locate the "install.wim" file. Save this file to C:\wim\ on your Windows installation or virtual machine.
If you have a Windows DVD: open the "sources" folder on the DVD and locate the "install.wim" file. Save this file to C:\wim\ on your Windows installation or virtual machine.
IMPORTANT: If instead of a "install.wim" file, you have "install.esd", you can not continue this step by step guide. And an ESD file can not be converted into a WIM file. So you must get a version of the Windows installation DVD/ISO that has an install.wim file.
Step 2: Clean, partition and format your external hard drive
On your Windows installation or virtual machine, plug in your external hard drive (can be plugged using USB2, USB3 or Thunderbolt at this stage)
Open the command prompt in administrator mode (cmd.exe). To run it in administrator mode, right click on cmd.exe > Run as admin.
Type the following and hit enter to open the disk partitioner utility:
diskpartType the following and hit enter to list your drives:
    list disk
This will display a list of disks mounted on your computer or virtual machine. Make sure your drive is listed here before you continue.Identify the disk ID of your external hard drive. Replace # by your real external disk ID in the command below:
select disk #Clean all partitions by typing the following (warning: this will erase all data from your external drive!):
    clean
Create the boot parition by typing the following followed by the enter key:
    create partition primary size=350
This will create a 350MB partition on your external driveFormat the partition in FAT32 by typing the following:
    format fs=fat32 quick
Set this partition to active by typing:
    active
Assign a letter to mount this partition. We will use letter B in our example. If B is already used on your PC, replace B by any other available letter:
    assign letter=b
Windows will detect a new drive and probably display a pop-up. Ignore that.Create the Windows installation partition using all the remaining space available on the external drive by typing the following:
    create partition primary
Format the new partition in NTFS:
    format fs=ntfs quick
Assign a letter to mount this partition. We will use letter O in our example. If O is already used on your PC, replace O by any other available letter:
    assign letter=o
Windows will detect a new drive and probably display a pop-up. Ignore that.Exit the disk partitioner utility by typing:
    exit
Step 3: Deploy the Windows installation image
Still using the command prompt in admin mode (you didn't close it, did you? ), locate the imagex.exe file mentioned in the "What you'll need" section and access its folder. In our example, we have put this file in C:\imagex\imagex.exe
Type the following and hit enter (remember to replace o: with the letter you have chosen in the previous step):
    imagex.exe /apply C:\wim\install.wim 1 o:
This will take some time. The Windows installation image is being deployed to your external driveOnce done, type the following to create the boot section (remember to replace o: and b: with the letters you've chosen in the previous step):
    o:\windows\system32\bcdboot o:\windows /f ALL /s b:
If you get an error message saying that you can't run this program on your PC, then most probably you are running on a 32 bits installation of windows and you're trying to deploy a 64 bits install. This means you did not read the important notes in the beginning of this guide
If you get an error message on the options that can be used with the BCDBOOT command, then it's because you're installing Windows 7, and the /f option is not supported. If that is the case, remove /f ALL from the command and retry.
Step 4: Boot from your external drive and install Windows
    Plug in your external drive:
If you've done all the previous steps from a Windows PC, unplug your external drive from your PC and plug it to your Mac, either on a USB3 or a Thunderbolt port.
If you've done all the previous steps from your Mac using a Virtual Machine, ensure the external drive is plugged in to a USB3 or Thunderbolt port. Using USB2 should also work but you'll get very poor performance so I don't recommend doing that.
Reboot your Mac and once the bootup sound is over, immediately press the ALT (option) key and release it only when the boot drives selection screen appears. If you did not get the boot drives selection screen, reboot and try again. The timing to press the ALT (option) key is quite short. It must not be too early or too late.
On the boot selection screen, choose "Windows" using the arrow keys on your keyboard, then press enter.
The Windows installation starts. Follow the on-screen instructions as normal. The installation program will restart your computer one or 2 times. Don't forget to press ALT (option) right after the bootup sound, and boot on Windows again each time to continue the installation.
    Step 5: Install bootcamp drivers
Once the Windows installation is complete, plug in the USB stick where you stored the bootcamp drivers (see "what you'll need" section), open it and right click on "setup.exe" and select "Run as admin". Follow the on-screen instructions. If you have an error saying that you can't run this program on this PC, obviously you have installed a 32 bits version of Windows and the bootcamp drivers for your Mac are made for a 64 bits version. You have to restart the whole guide and make sure to get a 64 bits version of Windows this time!
Once the bootcamp drivers are all installed, reboot and press ALT (option) after the bootup sound to boot on Windows again. And Voilà, you have Windows installed on your USB3/Thunderbolt drive running on your Mac.
Now each time you want to boot on Windows, press and hold the ALT (option) key after the startup sound and select "Windows", then press Enter.

Hi i'm trying to follow your guide, I installed windows 8 on bootcamp to do it planning to remove it after the operation is done, but i get stuck at part 3: every command i give to imagex i get a pop-up ftom windws asking how do I want to open this kind of file install.wim and imagex does nothing, what do i have to do to stop those pop-ups?

  • Using iPod as backup disk for failing drive

I am an avid user of iTunes with multiple years of history behind me, and I have owned my own iPod since about February, and I have never been disappointed until now, but I feel this is more an ID 10.T error than anything else.
I have a big library, so much so that a regular iPod just wouldn't do it, I had to go for the biggest one available. With a library of 5,230 songs covering 31.65GB, I have a nearly irreplacable collection, and to my dismay, my internal disk is failing (thank you Maxtor...)
As a wise move, I synchronised my iPod with iTunes with the latest additions, and was horrified to find that iTunes had sleuthed an entire band (Motorhead! No!), three songs from another band (Jimi Hendrix, why all the good guys?!), and two lone songs had become victim to my series of bad sectors cropping up all over the place. While I was thankful that this had not altered my iPod listings (the tracks are still on the iPod, and are still playable), I am left with a situation.
If I want to recover these tracks, most of which were ripped from now long-lost CDs years ago rather than purchased over iTMS, how would I go about doing it? Obviously, restoring them on the failing disk would be absolutely fruitless, but there will come a time when I CAN afford to replace the disk, and when this time comes, the entire library will need restoring, and as an extra precaution, I want to have the library stored on my partner's PowerBook. Having turned off automatic synchronisation, under the fear that I would lose my tracks, I thought there would then also be a method for transferring all the data FROM the iPod TO a machine, but this does not appear to be possible, and one begins to ponder the usefulness and customer satisfaction of a one-way music player? Is there an option within iTunes I am missing or simply haven't found yet? Or does the problem lie deeper than I believe it to be? How am I supposed to get music off, and re-enable automatic synchronisation without vaporising my irreplacable music collection that already exists on my iPod?
Seriously, it took me many years to rip, and over five hours to transfer, do NOT tell me I'm going to have to vaporise it to do anything with it, as I've already lost a few ultra-rare tracks on the disk...
Any help that could be given is very much appreciated.
    Custom Windows XP Pro

Now that your iPod is set for manual music management, does the iPod show up in Windows like an external drive? Do you see it listed either by name or by the generic "removable disk" under My Computer? Because once Windows recognizes it as a removable drive, you can open it and poke around for your files. First you need to expose hidden files using Windows' Tools•Folder Options•View settings. Then you'll see the folders in which the iPod stores all the stuff.

  • I upgraded to Snow Leopard on an external drive.  how do I reconnect to my old data?

I upgraded my Mac Mini from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  My old system is on the internal drive and the new OS is on a 500GB external hard drive plugged in via firewire. I made the mistake of not selecting for the install to include data from other volumes.  Now I cannot find how to include that data from the old volume. In fact, the new iTunes does not even see my iTunes library installed on the same volume.  iTunes does not even detect when I plug in my iPad.  Please point me in the write direction.  there is no useful info in the manuals.
    thanks,
    Len

Thanks John, that was it.  To tell the truth, the name Migration Assistant finally came back to me even before I saw your message, but that was pure luck.  I was disappointed that searching on my Mac and the Apple support site did not bring up that term.  Even having found the tool, the creators had apparently not thought of migrating from the another drive on the same computer.  Pretty big oversight to me.  Luckily I've been using Time Machine on another external drive and that option was available and worked.
Thanks again because if I had not thought that name and you had not responded, I would be veeeeerrry frustrated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • My 2009 MacBook Pro keeps restarting even after I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OSX.

About a month ago, my laptop started to randomly turn off: I would be using either Chrome, Photoshop (the free CS2 version available from Adobe's website) or Powerpoint, and the screen would go blank. I would then have to hold the power button for a while until the little light at the front of the computer would flicker and it would restart. I brought it to the Mac Store where they tested it and said it looked fine. They suggested I erase my hard drive and reinstall OSX as a precaution.
Fast forward a month, I have been very busy with work and hadn't been able to fix this problem. It wasn't that bad, only once every couple of days, sometimes more, sometimes less, I could work despite this problem.
Then, I installed OSX Mavericks. The installation started in the morning, but, like an idiot, I paused it to go to work. Later on, I completed the installation, it looked fine, but then all day long my laptop would suddenly restart and go to a grey screen that said in multiple languages "Your laptop restarted because of a problem, press any button to continue the restart." A computer technician friend of mine checked it out and said it was probably due to the badly installed OSX and suggested that I erase my hard drive and reinstall OSX.
I backed up all my files, erased the hard drive and reinstalled OSX. Everything looked fine.
    Then it happened again.
Any ideas of why this is happening?

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!

  • Where can I get a new hard drive for my intel imac?  **** thing dumped, less than 3 years old.

This is my first mac and the **** hard drive crashed in only 2+ years and of course the waranty is expired.  Can I replace the hard drive with any 3.5" replacement or do I need something special.  And if I do where can I get it?  I didn't see anything specifically for an intel imac at apple store.  I don't want to pay apple to install it, already spent enough money on this disappointing purchase.

any 3.5" Sata drive will do.  I recommend http://www.macsales.com/, or http://www.newegg.com/

  • Elements 6.0 won't run from my external hard drive?

So I had Photoshop Elements 6.0 installed on my laptop. Long story short, my laptop died. I removed the hard drive, put it in a case and turned it into an external. When placed into another working laptop, Elements runs just fine. However, when I hook it up as an external, it refuses to run. Because I didn't make an icon for PSE on my desktop, I have to go into Program Files and under PSE 6.0 and find the application icon for it and double click. A message pops up saying "Licensing for this product has stopped working. - You cannot use this product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT administrator or Adobe customer support for help."
    What gives?

If you take the hard drive and install it into a different computer and make this hard drive the system drive (i.e. the drive where the operating system is installed) then everything on that drive should work properly. If you take the hard drive and attach it to a computer that already has a system drive, nothing on that hard drive will work.
Mr Ellis had a more lucid explanation of this, but I'll add a bit to both of your treatises, hopefully this will add clarity, but who knows, anything can happen.
The >> BIOS << of a computer is responsible for the "boot order" of the machine. That is where the computer gets its instructions about where to look for the OS. If you summarily stuff a random HDD into a machine and expect it to boot from it, in most cases you will be disappointed. Since the drive didn't exist before, it likely won't appear first in the boot order, and gets ignored. So, to use any random HDD, you first would have to go into the BIOS and place it first in the boot order, then the computer would use the OS it found there to begin the session.
The trouble is, Windows takes note of hardware changes, and might ask you to reactivate Windows, when it realizes it is no longer in the original computer. Obviously the original hardware manifest is on the HDD being transported, and would be dramatically different from the hardware environment of the new machine.
In most cases, Windows will not perform up to expectations if it isn't reinstalled into the new host machine.
However you can retrieve the catalog file from the laptop HDD and place it in the new computer, and also copy the "My Pictures" folder to it. Since, in this case both the laptop "My Pictures" and desktop "My Pictures" are both likely on their respective "C:/" drives, in all likelyhood PSE would be able to open the catalog successfully.
I should add that in the case of running the OS from an external HDD, the first choice in the computer's boot order must be set to, "boot from USB device"!

  • Satego X200 - XP Display Driver (Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT)

    Hi,
finally I managed to install XP on my 2. HDD - beside Vista (in order to get rid of Vista later).
What I still need is a suitable display driver, since Toshiba offers only one for ATI.
I found many posts with similar topics in the www (laptopvideo2go, Nvidia, etc), but no suitable driver so far. Nvidia doesn't support Toshiba drivers directly.
So I asked Toshiba for a solution and mentioned that a beta-driver might help as well since I don't need high grafic performance on this machine (no 3d stuff and I won't play games here) it should simply work ;-).
They answered very quickly and provided a link to a not-signed _Satellite_ X200 driver. Unfortunately that driver leads to the same result (similar to: "Hardware not supported ...installation terminated").
It would be great if anyone had an idea

    @jaba & @Horwath
I asked Toshiba Germany again if and when they'll make an XP driver available. Their answer was quite clear - and disappointing: "they can't actually tell" :-(
In the meantime I found a way to increase my grafic performance a little bit (while using the XP standard VGA driver) .
I had the problem that i.e. shifting a single window took some time because it goes nearly line by line (not really but that's how it looked like).
Therefore I reduced the hardware acceleration to "none" (don't know if this is the correct translation since I use a German MMI).
This helps a little - I wonder how long, I guess 'til my son installs his next game ;-)
I will follow your advice looking for 3rd party drivers but of course I'd still appreciate any further hint.
    Thanks so far

  • After upgrading to FF 3.6.12 I can no longer view PHP pages from my hard drive.

After upgrading to version 3.6.12 I can no longer open PHP web pages from my hard drive. When I create or edit web pages I view them from my hard drive first before uploading, as many webmasters do to look for errors before taking them live.
I can view PHP pages online, but from my hard drive it just spawns endless empty tabs. Instead of just opening the page it asked me what to open it with, thinking the PHP web page is a script.
It was working fine before the upgrade. I had a page open that I wanted to edit, which it reopened when my browser restarted.
Then I edited the page. All I did was add a link to it. Then I hit the refresh button to see the change and instead of reloading the page, FF asked me what to do with the PHP script, prompting me to save it or choose what program to open it with.
I selected to view it with FF and it just spawned endless tabs. They wouldn't stop. Had to shut down FF and it probably had 40 tabs opened with nothing on them. I tried other PHP pages from my hard drive that opened fine before, but it did the same thing with them.
I tried finding help online and I see others have had the same problem, but no solution was offered that worked. I tried rebooting, same story, it wants to know what to do with the PHP script.
I'm being forced to use another browser, so I'm going to go download Chrome now. If this probably isn't fixed soon I'll simply give up on FF. It's not worth the aggravation. I can't tell you how much TIME I've wasted today -- HOURS.
    Very disappointed.

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't have to process the php, it just has to show the HTML content. It did that just fine before the last upgrade but won't now.
I've seen that page you referenced: http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions.
It doesn't help. The things it says to look for aren't there for me, specifically:
    browser.download.pluginOverrideTypes
    plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types
I followed the rest of the instructions but it didn't help.
I did get it to quit opening tabs, instead it prompts me what it should do with the file every time now. What it should do, and used to do, is open the php page and display the HTML content.
    Any other ideas?
