Drive failed -trying to use other optical drive
Okay here goes.
Drive failed on my MacBook Pro.
Want to load and install new OS.
I put the OS DVD in my son's iMac > shut it down > restart in Target Mode
Have the iMac and MacBook Pro connected by Firewire.
Start MacBook while holding down the option key > MacBook shows a pic of a HD and an arrow > click the arrow > MacBook starts up as usual but shows the connected iMac as an external drive
My problem is I need to access the DVD drive on the iMac in order to install the new OS.
So, what am I doing wrong?

Hard Drive failed - Trying to Use Data Rescue II
I am trying to recover some photos and videos of my first child's first 20 months alive. My MacBook crashed while I was checking my gmail one night. I have a friend's iBook G4 connected to my MacBook via FireWire right now and am trying to use Data Rescue II to possibly recover my photos and videos. I can live without everything else. When I use the install disc to boot up my MacBook, all the iBook is seeing is the install disc, not the hard drive. Why? and what am I doing wrong? Why can't I see/scan the hard drive, too? Do I have other options?

The drive in the MacBook would mount like any other hard drive.

Given that Disk Utility in the installer disk won't see the drive, I think it most likely that the drive has failed, in which case Data Rescue will not be able to recover anything (it won't work if the drive won't even mount). Probably the only way you're going to be able to recover any files would be by sending the drive to a data recovery service, and those are very expensive.
You can try removing the drive and putting it in an external case or using a drive adapter like the NewerTech unit (whatever's least expensive). That would verify that the problem is the drive and not with the drive circuitry on the MacBook. If you have an Apple Store near you, often they can perform such a test at the Genius Bar which would save you from having to buy a case/adapter yourself. -
Hard drive failed, can I use an external drive as my main HD?
Took my 20" iMac to the Genius Bar today and my hard drive is completely shot. It would be $250 to replace it but I was wondering if I could run it off of an external hard drive or do I absolutely have to get a new internal drive? Any suggestions or ideas would help! I just don't know about dropping $250 on a 5/6 year old computer. Thanks everyone!
If you want, you can look up how to replace the drive yourself on YouTube and buy a new hard drive from Best Buy or any other computer store that sells Mac-compatible disks. I did this and I was able to save $100 by not having Apple do it for me.
I think it might be theoretically possible to run the system off of an external drive, but it's not that reliable. I tried it on my external drive, formatted it correctly and everything, but it failed about halfway through the OS X installation, so it may not work for you. -
What's Happening?? Some days after installing latest security update for 10.5.8 on G4, both inernal CD/DVD drives failed to mount disks other than a cleaning disk which mounted and was imported into iTunes. No other CD or DVD disk will mount.Is this a unique experience?

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive. -
MacBook Air does not have an optical drive. There is a program I wish to install on my Air which is an astronomy application called Megastar V. Installation requires the use of a CD. Is there a way to use the optical drive on my PC (toshiba laptop using Windows 7) to install this program onto my Air?

I am sorry but Acrobat 7 is not at all compatible with Windows 8. For this, you will need to upgrade your Adobe Acrobat version.

On my Macbook pro 15, 2011, System Profiler is suggesting that it uses SATA III for the hard drive and SATA II for the Optical Drive. Is that true?
That is correct. The tech specs indicate:

On my 17" MacBook Pro I use the eSata port for Black X Duet Hard Drive Docking station where I put 2 1TB Hitachi internal drives. They are swappable and are about $80.00US. I use the USB port for my system backup and a G-force 500 MB bus powered portable drive on the FW800 port just for the heck of it. It works out really well for me.

Can I still use the Optical Drive if I install a SSD in my MacBook Pro?

I'm looking to replace the standard hard drive in my MacBook Pro with a 240GB SSD, my question is, does this effect the usage of the DVD/CD Drive? As i've seen in some videos people taking that out and putting the exsisting hard drive there.
I don't want to do that I will turn that in to an extra external hard drive.

I don't have enough space on my Mac HD to back up my iPad. Actually, my iTunes library is on an external drive. Can I use this same drive to Back up my iPad?
1. First make sure iPhoto is not running. If it is, quit it. Use the Finder to copy your iPhoto Library file to your external drive. Unless you've changed it, its located inside your Pictures folder and is named "iPhoto Library".
2. After the copy is complete, start iPhoto while simultaneously holding down the option key. iPhoto will bring up a dialog box. The file in the list is your existing Library on your internal disk. Click the "Other Library" button and navigate to your external drive. Select your freshly copied iPhoto Library file and click "Open". iPhoto will from now on open and work with this library on the external drive.
3. After you've confirmed iPhoto is working properly with the newly copied library you may wish to delete the original library in your Pictures folder to recover the disk space.
Don't forget to keep a backup copy of your library on a separate disk. It's not a matter of "if" your external drive will fail but "when". You need to make regular backups or you'll be sorry someday. -

As far as my experience goes I have had all external dvd drives work throu USB, the USB stands for Universal Seriel Bus and that means the drives are already in the device, so you can probably just go to best buy or to new egg and order a cheap one.
If you have usb 3.0 I would go with that since its one of the faster ones and you will save money on using a thunder bolt device, and trust me a $17 dvd player works just as good as a $120 dvd player. -
"No bootable device ..." Trying install Windows (Flashdrive + Optical drive install)
I tried to install Windows 8 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit on a seperat partition on My MacBook Pro 2011 15" using Boot Camp-assistant on Mountain Lion.
I got some errors like when rebooting and trying to enter the install-disk it says: "No bootable device ..."
I have already tried solutions with different flashdrives it did not work for me. I also tried with a optical drive - Windows 7 DVD install-disk - which also did not work for me.
It has worked for me before some time ago but that time I had Lion or SnowLeorpard on my Mac.
I don't know if there is a bug or something like that in the new OS - Mountain Lion?

The problem is that you have to use a certain DVD-drive(dual layer) to install/boot Windows and since my MacBook Pro's internal DVD-drive does not work I have used an external DVD-drive which is much likely causing the problem. Therefore the only solution (in my case) is to use a proper DVD-drive(from Apple) or repair the internal drive.

MBP Late 2010, How can I install Win7 Boot Camp using External Optical Driv

I have a new MBP purchased in February. It's not the 2011 model. I replaced the Optical drive with an SSD drive and put the optical drive in an external enclosure. The Optical drive works great, reads, writes, etc. My Windows 7, Pro 64bit DVD works also, tested on a PC.
I use the Boot Camp assistant to create a partition. It them reboots and never starts up from the optical drive. I get an Apple logo alternating with a stop sign.
I have got back to OS X by starting with the Option key and choosing my OS X volume.
I tried booting to the DVD by using the option key, that did not work. I then choose the EFI option which allowed me to hit any key and appeared to boot from the external optical drive. Windows setup screen came up and I hit enter to start the file loading process. It eventually stopped when the progress bar was all the way across the screen. Then nothing.
Questions {Please give definitive answers, not guesses, thanks :)}
1) Is it possible to setup a boot camp Windows installation without an internal optical drive? Yes/No.
2) If yes, how?
3) I see the rEFIt utility has helped some but I read mixed reports. Will this help me boot and run Windows setup from an external optical drive? I don't want to install it if it's not known to be a certain fix.
4) Is my only options to reinstall the optical drive?
I chatted to OWC the vendor that sells the bracket. They had no idea how to install a Windows BC partition without an internal drive.
I am seriously discouraged by what seems to be Apple wanting to control everything. I had a Mac Pro and Air book in my future but now, it's on hold.

KevinI tried what you are doing with a 2007 MBP, and could not get any Windows CD s to boot from an external optical drive, firewire or USB.
I think this is fundamental to Windows which won't boot from an external USB drive either even on a Windows machine (although I believe there may be complex ways of achieving this). I don't think this is Apple trying to control the world.
I ended up taking the MCE Optibay out and putting the original optical drive back in.
Just possible that something has changed between a 2007 MBP and 2010 MBP, but I doubt it.
If you want the second internal HD, you have two options:-
1. Put the Apple optical back in, install Windows, then take out the optical and refit the SSD. The external optical will still be able to install windows apps and data etc, just not boot any windows install CDs or utilities (like Paragon rescue disks). You will not be able to do a Windows repair install without refitting the optical.
2. Parallels, which has come a long way in the last two years. I am 99% certain that Parallels will install from an external optical.

My macbook air got wet and now it doesn't have any sound
My macbook air just got a little wet but then air was coming out of it and now it works and i can use it but sound doesnt come out of it. Should i bring it in ? Is there anything that Apple can do to bring the sound back ?

I am not able to scroll my contacts. If i add or mahe any change in existing contacts, it appaers at the top of the contacts and freezes rest above the first letter of newly added or changed one. Anyone can help?
