Drive Jumper Settings

My original hard drive, IBM Deskstar 80GB, failed. I replaced it with a Seagate and want to designate the old drive as the slave to see if I can do some recovery work on it.
For the Seagate to be the master, instruction indicate a single jumper placed in left most setting. I don't have instructions for making the Deskstar a slave and can't make out settings on the back of it. So, I used same recommended slave setting for the Seagate which was no jumpers. After re-booting, computer works fine but does not recognice the slave drive.
Can anyone confirm that I have the settings correct or let me know what they should be?
Thanks

Hi, Gonzo!
I might be incorrect, but I would try the Western Digital with the Single setting. Unlike others, WD specifies the "Master (dual)" setting when the drive is installed along with another drive on the same bus, which isn't the case here. The Single setting is akin to the single Master setting on other drive brands.
If you're having problems with the drive, you might consider foregoing the external case setup for now and instead install it in the Mac and see if you can mount it/repair it there first.
Have you or can you run Repair Disk on the drive with Disk Utility (DU)? If so, what happens/what error message do you get? Have you tried to mount the drive using the DU "Mount" option? Have you tried resetting PRAM? Can you mount the drive booted from OS 9 or the OS 9 install disk, using Disk First Aid and /or Drive Setup (don't initialize!)?
DiskWarrior is arguably the best drive directory repair utility to be had, and might be able to rebuild the directory and restore the drive, if the above doesn't help. If DW won't, however, Data Rescue II may be able to recover the data if the drive can't be repaired. You might download the free trial version and see if it "sees" the files on that drive. If it does, it most probably can salvage them.

  • Hard drive Jumper settings????

    Hello
    Wondering if anyone can help... just successfully replaced the original 80GB Seagate hardrive with a new 250GB Hitachi Hardrive in my eMac. Took quite a while and very fiddly but everything seems to be ok. That was until I noticed the jumper setting on the original Seagate hardrive are set to cable select but the new hard drive i put in was set to master.
    Does it make a difference being set to master or cable select?
    Will this have any effect on the hardrive performance?
    What is it meant to be set to... Master ..... or Cable select???
    Has anyone had any experience of this??
    Many Thanks
    Andy

    Shouldn't make any difference. On cable select, it should detect that it's a master and behave accordingly.

  • How to change jumper settings on Toshiba hard drive?

    Hello,
    I have a 1.33 ghz 12 inch Powerbook model. Recently, I had been experiencing occassional failure on the internal 60GB hard drive, and I decided to have the drive replaced altogether before the whole thing died. I've got a new drive in the computer now - and wanted to get back onto the old one to access some information. I picked up an external 2.5" enclosure to access the drive as an external drive - the only thing is that I believe I have to change the drive's jumper settings to "slave," and I can't figure out how to do it for the life of me. Anyone know how to change this setting on these internal drives, or what I need to do in order to access my information using an external drive enclosure? Thanks so much...

    What kind of enclosure is it? For more than one HD so it would be the second one? Otherwise you can just put the drive in the enclosure and use it over FW or USB. Single HD external disks work afaik best with the HD set to master or cable select -> most times no settings change needed.

  • Jumper Settings for Second SATA-II drive Installed Into Dual 2.0Ghz G5

    I have installed a second SATA-II 500GB Maxtor drive into a brand new (purchased as re-furbished computer from Apple) dual 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5. The drive has four connector pins with a jumper slide over the last pin on the right. Before I power up the computer I want to verify the correct jumper settings. According to the Maxtor website, no jumpers are required since the "serial ATA host automatically determines the master and slave hard drive." And according to a MacSales tech (this is the vendor where I purchased the Maxtor drive) I should pull off the existing jumper. Can anyone verify if this is, in fact, the correct jumper setting (no jumpers on the connector pins) for this drive on this system?
    G5 dual 2.0 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello! From the Maxtor web site.
    "PLEASE NOTE: Unlike standard ATA drives, Serial ATA drives DO NOT require the use of jumpers to configure the drive. Please disregard any references to jumper settings and Master, Slave and Cable Select configurations in the Maxtor Installation Guide."
    I'd leave the jumper as is came when you got it. tom

  • Need some help with all of the jumper settings.

    Wow, this has been some ordeal. I inherited a G4 iMac from a friend, which has been a great deal of trouble to me, particularly with the jumper settings. Anybody like dealing with that? Come on down...
    So here's my situation. The hard drive in the iMac was dead. No big deal I'll just replace it, so I got a drive which I'm SURE is compatible. I plugged it in paying little attention to the jumper settings on it because until the beginning of this ordeal I knew nothing about jumper settings.
    Now this is where it starts making no sense... I booted the computer while holding down the mouse button to eject, then put in a 10.2 OS disc, and then restarted holding C to boot from the install disc. It loaded fine but when I got to the installation step where I pick a drive to install it to, there were NO drives in the menu.
    Maybe it needs to be formatted, right? WRONG. From the install screen I clicked open disc utility, and found the drive there in the list. It recognizes the drive, so why can't I install to it? I tried reformatting the drive as Mac os extended or whatever, and this made no difference.
    This is where the jumpers come into play. I can't find jumper settings anywhere online for the DVD-RW Pioneer DVR-104PC Superdrive, so I've left the jumper on the optical drive alone and tried toying with the jumper settings on the HD instead, but I tried every possible setting and none of them worked to allow the installer to see my hard drive.
    So what do you all think the deal is? If you know what the various jumper positions are for this particular optical drive, by all means let me know so I can toy around some more. Or if you know an alternate solution other than what I've suggested, please share. I've already invested money in a drive, some thermal paste, and Torx screwdrivers for this thing, so I really just want to get it working.... Let me know...

    Hey Michael,
    Here's the link to the WD support site:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=84
    My experience with WDs is that when they need to be "Master single" I use no jumper. That's in most Mac setups including the iMac G4s. Which drove me nutz until I figured that out. All other manufactures I've run into need a jumper across the first pair on the left as you look at it from the back. WD is the odd man out.
    Also if you Google:
    "western digital jumpers" the 2nd response you get is from OWC (macsales.com) and they're telling you to use the slave setting. Don't know about that I've always used no jumpers but I see a lot of hard drives so next time..

  • WD 750gb SE HD Jumper Settings

    Just bought 2 750gb WD SE Caviar drives for my G5 2.3 dual (pre Oct 05) system.
    Computer crashes about 1/3 into formatting drive.
    What are the jumper settings for this drive in a G5? Drive came with no jumper installed and given that it is a sata II drive with 3gb transfer rate do I need to set jumper so drive transfer is 1.5gb for the G5?
    Help!

    Hi Paul and others,
    I have a very similar situation. Just got the same WD 750gb Caviar, installed it in the top bay of my G5 dual 2ghz, and am wondering why it won't boot. Installed Leopard from scratch and then migrated data from bottom bay drive (250gb sata - Also running 10.5) and it seemingly will not boot.
    I tried with factory default jumper settings (i.e. no jumpers) and then finally pulled the jumper off of the older 250GB I pulled and tried that. The lower bay drive has the jumper settings in the same 1,2 slot.
    *Okay, this is odd...*
    Just realized that is actually IS booting off of the drive, but the drive is not sitting in the top righthand corner of the screen. Now, is it booting because I put the jumpers on, or...?
    Also, does anyone know a trick to getting the bottom bay drive out? Wow! I had to use pliers just to get it to budge! And I know that has got to be a big no-no for drive removal. I think I may have a theory as to why it was so hard (the drive screws were more rounded than the slightly flat top ones that come with the G5 PowerMacs?...), but it just shouldn't be this challenging! Took me nearly an hour to finally get it out and it's a miracle I didn't ruin the drive in the process!
    Any ideas?
    Much obliged,
    Mick

  • Installing 2nd Optical Drive (Jumper Selection)

    I purchased a Retail Plextor PX-760A DVD Burner which was on sale at Dell.com for C$99.
    When installing the secondary drive what setting should the jumper be on. Should I put it in 'Cable Select' mode or 'Slave' mode.
    Help is appreciated.

    The OEM should be set to CS. So that is what to use. You cannot mix master/slave jumper settings with cable select on the same bus.
    You'll know when you press Option + Eject

  • DVR-103 Jumper settings

    Added a DVR-103 in the second bay in addition to my DVR-104. But my system doesn't like it. Perhaps it is either jumper settings or perhaps firmware? Don't know firmware version. System profiler and disk utility both are unresponsive with the 103 connected.
    I have both set to cable select (I think). The best I could find with respect to setting jumpers was this.
    http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/index.php?i=specPioneer_DVR-103&pi=platform_odysseyixtreme
    I found the support page, but can't see anything about jumpers - in the FAQ it suggests a master/slave configuration, though.
    Can anyone confirm that jumper settings listed on the UK packardbell site are correct? Unlike HDs, there is not a nice little diagram on either of the superdrives that tells me how to set the jumper (at least nothing that I can figure out).
    Thank you.

    Got into to work this morning and continued trying to get the 2 SuperDrives to work. I found a big part of the problem. The DVR-103 I was trying to use is broken. Now we no why that Quicksilver it came out of would kernel panic. Every machine that Drive goes into kernel panics.
    So, I took yet another DVR-103 from a working quicksilver and put it in this MDD...
    But I am back to where I started. I set them to M/S and neither is recognized; this is with both the 104 (in the top slot set to master) and the 103 to slave. When I set the 104 in the top slot to slave and the 103 to master, System Profiler showed that I had a DVR-102 installed, but gave garbage info for firmware, etc. Neither of these drives is a 102. I don't know from which drive this information was coming.
    Set them both to cable select and then System Profiler shows that the 104 is present but the 103 is not.
    So I must have the wrong jumper settings (or perhaps the DVR-103 firmware, v. 1.90, is not compatible with Leopard?)
    I ask again if anyone can confirm the jumper settings for a DVR-103. I am led to believe that far right is master, second from the right is slave, and middle is cable select. Is this correct?
    Thank you for the help

  • Jumper settings on new external ATA HD

    Hi, I just got a 250gb Seagate HD Internal to replace my 80gb housed in an external case. I was looking online and saw different opinions on setting the new drive as slave, or not even worrying about jumper settings. Do I need to take the little nub thing off so I have nothing on my jumpers?
    thanks.

    Either set it as a "master", or remove the jumper. Either way should work just fine.

  • TS1559 I have two problems but since they both started at the same time I'm guessing that they are related. My WiFi on/off button is greyed out AND my iCloud Drive (under "Settings") has been "Upgrading" with that spinning download symbol for 2 wks now! N

    I cant be positive but I think this started when my iPhone did an automatic software update. I couldn't get any WiFi connection because when I go to turn it back on the iPhone wont let me and Greys out my WiFi on/off button.
    But also I think something happened to my iCloud connect as well because next to my iCloud Drive under "Settings" it has that spinning symbol that usually denotes waiting for something to finish downloading. But this time it never stopped! Its been spinning saying "iCloud is Upgrading" for 2 weeks now! I have tried the on/off iPhone restart or reset, and I've even put my iPhone into "Recovery Mode" as a last resort. but when iTunes was finished "Restoring" it, nothing had changed; Still Greyed out WiFi button and iCloud is still "Upgrading"! Help please!

    Hi Ichin,
    I am a bit confused with your statement -
    if ((p_select_list is not null) and (p_text_field is not null)) then
    return true;
    elsif ((p_select_list is null) and (p_text_field is null)) then
    return true;
    else
    return false;
    end if;Here this statement -
    if ((p_select_list is not null) and (p_text_field is not null)) then
    return true;returning the result TRUE when both fields are not null
    And this statement -
    elsif ((p_select_list is null) and (p_text_field is null)) then
    return true;returning the result TRUE again when both fields are null. If you see closely basically is not validating becoz it returning true whatever the input is.
    I do not know what you want to use the second statement when you have else statement at the end. It will return false if one or both fields are null unless you want to validate either text field.
    Hope this make sense.

  • I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a

    I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a all-in-one
    Product: D110a all-in-one
    OS: Windows XP Professional
    Error messages: None
    Changes before problem appeared: None--new installation
    The quality of photo images (mostly JPG files) in printouts is awful even though the files display beautifully on the PC screen. I am using
    IrfanView software for displaying/printing. As far as I can tell, IrfanView is not the problem.
    When I print the same images on a Deskjet 5150 attached to a different PC also running XP Pro and IrfanView, the quality of the printouts is at
    least acceptable, Some would probably say good or very good.
    It's dificult to explain in words the problem with the printouts. A picture of really pretty vegetables (squashes, tomatoes, watermelon, etc) comes
    out much too red. Moreover, the red, which appears shaded on the screen, seems to be all one shade in the D110a printouts.
    Something similar happens to a view of a huge tree in full leaf. On screen, there are subtle variations in the "greenness" of the leaves. In the
    printout, all green is the same shade. In the same printout, the trunk of the tree is all a single shade of grey. It isn;t even obvious that the
    trunk is a round, solid object.
    I liken the effect to audio that disappears entirely when you lower the volume and gets clipped into square waves in even moderately loud passages.
    I don't know whether the D110a driver software permits adjusting the parameters that appear to be set incorrectly, and if adjustments are possible,
    how I would identify which parameters to adjust, how I would access them, or how I would adjust them. I'm hoping that someone can help. Thanks.
    I forgot to mention that I have used the diagnostic application and it tells me that there are no problems.

    Hi everyone,
    I noticed the following message when network starts on my gateway
    Warning: This functionality is deprecated.
    Please refer to /etc/rc.conf on how to define a single wired
    connection, or use a utility such as netcfg.
    Then I realized the way network settings should be written in rc.conf has changed. But I can't figure out how this should be done.
    Currently, my set up is the following (old way):
    INTERFACES=(eth0 eth1)
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="eth1 192.168.0.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    eth0 is on DHCP because the IP is dynamically assigned my ISP.
    eth1 has a fix IP because it's on the LAN side.
    No problem to use DHCP on eth0 with the new settings.
    But for eth1, I don't know what I am supposed to write for gateway.
    Wiki isn't clear on that one either, and it looks like many articles still refer to the old way.
    Any guidance appreciated, thanks.
    brazzmonkey,
    you can't define 2 interfaces the old way (even though I saw some tricky workaround somewhere in the forums).
    Use, f.e., netcfg:
    Comment your old lines.
    In /etc/rc.conf insert:
    NETWORKS=(Eth0-dhcp Eth1-static)
    DAEMONS=(..... !network @net-profiles ....)
    In /etc/network.d create 2 files:
    First one is named  Eth0-dhcp.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION="ethernet"
    DESCRIPTION="Whatever text"
    INTERFACE=eth0
    HOSTNAME="your hostname"
    IP="dhcp"
    DHCP_TIMEOUT=15
    Second one is named Eth1-static.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION='ethernet'
    DESCRIPTION='whatver'
    INTERFACE='eth1'
    HOSTNAME='hname'
    IP='static'
    ADDR='192.168.0.10'
    GATEWAY='192.168.0.1' # your gateway IP
    DNS=('192.168.0.1') # your DNS server
    The names Eth0-dhcp and Eth1-static are not magic. They just must be the same in rc.conf and in /etc/network.d.
    Hope it helps.

    PS: netcfg must be installed.

    Does anyone know if it possible to query the jumper settings on a SUN SPARC box. I need to know the current state of jumper J3001 on a 420R without opening the hood.

    most likely it is the jumper is on 1&2... write protect... factory default.. you would have known this if you would have looked for the service manual http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/pdf/80 6-1080-10.pdf

  • Need help with jumper settings for k7n2 delta ilsr

    I have a k7n2 delta ilsr and I'm using a AMD 2800+ barton 333 fsb. I'm not sure what the jumper settins are for this cpu. The users guide only shows 133/166 and 200, can anyone help me with the jumper settings.
    Thanks, Ron.

    Hi,
    As your processor is 333FSB - the jumper should be set to 166FSB as should the BIOS. As your RAM CPU combination runs at 2x166=333 or thereabouts.
    Basically, as a general rule, if you halve the FSB speed of your processor you'll get the setting for both BIOS and Jumper. 200FSB=100, 266FSB=133, 333FSB=166 etc. etc.

  • Jumper settings for 233 Beige to 450 B&W upgrade?

    Hello All!
    I found a 450MHz CPU from a Blue & White Power Mac G3 that I would like to install in my Beige Power Mac G3 233MHz Desktop Rev. 1 running 10.2.8 and 9.2.2. Do I use the 450 or 233 heatsink? I can't find any jumper settings for this upgrade online. I can only find OEM 233 overclocking info. Does anyone know the jumper settings? I really want to use an Apple CPU and not a third party CPU. Thanks so much in advance!
    Craig

    I installed the B&W 450 CPU http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj175/icubephotos/IMG_7456.jpg
    I set the jumpers at 1,3,5,6,8,9 found at http://www.wmld.com/tech/jumperchart2.html to achieve 455MHz with 70MHz bus.
    http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj175/icubephotos/IMG_7443-1.jpg
    http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj175/icubephotos/455.jpg
    I got a combination that isn't even on the chart http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj175/icubephotos/bus.jpg I got 455MHz still with 66MHz OEM bus.
    http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj175/icubephotos/455-67.jpg
    I decided to then go for 466MHz with 66MHz bus and not try to achieve the faster bus, but opt for a faster CPU with jumpers 1,2,4,5,6,7. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj175/icubephotos/467-67.jpg
    I am more than amazed and pleased with the results!! The performance increase is awesome and very stable running 10.2.8. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj175/icubephotos/466.jpg
    Thank you Dan, Kevin and Grant! Grant, the 15 second CUDA button press worked the first time!
    I wonder why the 70MHz bus didn't work?
