Drive not appearing

New Drobo drive does not appear in left side menu.  What hav I forgotten?

It sounds like your drive may be failing.
Try the Disk Utility app, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Does the drive appear in it's sidebar? If it does, try to do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it.
If it doesn't appear, try different ports and cables. If Disk Utility can't see it at all, there's probably not much you can do with it. If you have a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, like Disk Warrior, it's barely possible it can see and fix it, but don't spend the $100 for DW, as it will most likely not work.
Was the disk powered-on while you were gone? Is it on a U.P.S. or surge protector? Could there have been a power surge or brownout while you were gone?
How old is it? I think most Seagates have a 5-year warranty, if that's any consolation.

  • External Hard Drive not appearing on Macbook Pro or 2009 Macbook

    Hello,
I have a G Technology G-DRIVE External Hard Drive, that until now has worked perfectly.
I plugged it in today to try and back up my macbooks through Time Machine, like I have done for the last year - and on ether of the computers, the Hard Drive is not appearing in Time Machine or Finder. Having browsed online, I found that it is showing in Disk Utility and in System Information - but other than that I cannot do anthing with it. I even tried to Repair the drive, by erasing it and reformatting it - and I cant do it - I keep getting the messgae 'Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.'
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I use this hard drive as a Time Machine Backup, and I'm unable to do so.

At best, it sounds like this HD is flakey so even if you were able to get it working again, I would not trust it.

  • Iomega external hard drive not appearing in Disk Utility

I have a MacBook Pro (from 2011) and I'm running OS X 10.9.5. I have an old Iomega external hard drive. I'm not certain but this thing might be about 3-4 years old? When I connect the drive to my MBP, it shows up in Finder under Devices. But what appears is the Windows disk utility that is pre-loaded on the drive. The actual drive does not appear and I can't move files onto it in Finder.
When I go into Disk Utility and try to format the drive for Mac use, it doesn't appear.
Is there anything I can do or am I stuck with this old drive that doesn't work with Macs?

  • Time Machine- external hard drive not appearing

I'm trying to set up Time Machine. However, the Maxtor one touch 4 plus drive is not appearing as an option to choose to set as back up drive?

  • Printer setup utility- driver not appearing in list

Hi - I have installed a Canon printer driver (latest version as I checked), restarted my new MacBook (with updated OSX) but the driver does not appear in the list when i try to set printer up. Printer is connected to USB. It is a Canon Pixus iP7500. Latest driver is 4.1.9 - I checked.
I think my question is - how do i get the driver to appear in the Utility's list?
    Thanks.

For the Canon PIXMA drivers (or PIXUS in Japan), the Print Using menu is meant to automatically change to Canon IJ Printer when it detects the USB connected printer. If it doesn't change, you cannot manually browse to it like you can for other drivers.
Often the cause of the correct driver not being selected is that the software hasn't installed correctly. Following is some steps that I have used myself and offered to others that has resolved this problem.
    1. Open Printer Setup Utility, click on Printer Setup Utility and select Reset Printing System.
    2. Close the Printer Setup Utility.
    3. Go to Library > Printers > Canon and delete the contents of the BJPrinters folder.
    4. Go to Library > Receipts and delete the file Canon iPxxxx xxx.pkg
    5. Empty the Trash
    6. Restart the Mac
    7. Install the latest version of the Canon driver (which you have).
    8. Once the driver installation is complete, go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk Permissions option.
    9. Open Printer Setup Utility. If the printer is not already displayed, click Add.
    10. Select the Default Browser view and select the Canon printer connected via the USB port. The Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon IJ Printer.
    11. Click Add to add the printer.
If the Canon IJ Printer doesn't appear automatically then please reply.

  • External Hard Drive Not Appearing on desktop

My external HD has disappeared from my desktop. If I connect it via FW it does not appear in disk utilities or system profiler but if I connect it via usb it appears in both. I've switched out the cables, tried different ports and reset the PRAM and NVRAM. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to a fix?
    Thanks in advance

    Scott:
I take it from your explanation that even though it appears in all three of the utilities that my only remaining option is to use DataRescue II. Correct?
Let's say that it is the only one that occurs to me at this time of night
The demo version will at least show you that the data is still there. Another option might be to use SuperDuper to see if you can clone the User's Folder, or indeed the entire volume to an external firewire HDD, then using DU to reformat and erase the HDD (post for directions if needed) and clone back from external firewire HDD.
Yes, the drive does show up in sidebar in all three of the utilities I mentioned.
Is it possible to run Repair Disk in Disk Utility and see how it comes out? Or if you have done it already, what does it say?
While in Disk Utility, select the Manufacture ID of the external HDD and then look at the look at the icons at the very top. Is Mount dimmed or active? If active, click on it to mount the HDD.
Also, what happens if you try to Option boot?
If anything else occurs to me I will post back in the morning.
    Cheers

  • External hard drive not appearing when entering time machine.

Why does my external hard drive back up on time machine ok, but when I enter time machine (and the external device isn't plugged in) i can't see it?
It appears in time machine fine when the external drive is plugged in, but just not if it's been ejected or
I want to have the ext drive backed up in case I lose it or it corrupts....and if that happens I won't be able to plug it in to see the drive in TM - does that make sense?
I am running OSX 10.9.3 on a Mid 2010 Mac Book Pro. The external drive is a samsung and is formatted to Mac OS Extended (journaled). Time Machine is a standard Apple one and has been working fine for a couple of years

Try holding down the Option Key when selecting the Time Machine menu, then select Brows Other Time Machine Disks. See if you can then browse the backup of that drive. The normal Time Machine display is kind of a “live” restore point thing, if that makes sense.
I’m not sure if there is anything in Pondini’s FAQ, but you might peruse it and see if he discusses that issue: http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

  • External hard drive not appearing in Airport Utility

I have connected an Iomega eGo portable hard drive to my airport extreme but i cannot access it from my airport utility or airport disk utility.
In fact it doesn't appear at all, even though the disk seems to be powered up and working.
Do i need a separate power supply for the disk or is it a compatibility issue?

not to worry, played around with the cables and it's sorted

  • Hard drive not appearing during restore from Time Machine?

While attempting to restore Time Machine from an external drive to my new MacBook Pro, the hard drive doesn't appear in the graphic.  A second external drive I have does appear, but not the Macintosh HD.  Suggestions?

    Howdy dlayne40,
If your hard drive is not showing in Time Machine, check it with Disk Utility.
OS X: If you can't back up or restore with Time Machine - Apple Support
    Check your Drives
Use Disk Utility to check your startup disk and any external drives you are using for backup.
Repair any issues and try again.

  • Flash [?] drive not appearing in /dev/disk/by-uuid

I'm not sure if "flash drive" is the correct term or not ... the filesystem I want to mount is on a Sansa c240 MP3 player (a refurbished unit I bought last week), which connects via USB. Now, I *can* mount the drive, and have been able to all along, but I would like to add a line in /etc/fstab, using the device name from /dev/disk/by-uuid, so I can mount the thing conveniently under my regular username. But the device is not listed in /dev/disk/by-uuid (I've checked many times over the last couple of days).
That's not how it started, though. When I first brought the thing home and plugged it in, it did appear in /dev/disk-by-uuid. But I ran into some difficulties, and in the course of trying to make the player play nice with Linux, I formatted the drive once or twice using the player's internal command--still no problem as long as I did that. But then, following somebody's recommendation, I ran mkfs.vfat on the partition under Linux ... and that seems to have coincided with the device's disappearing from /dev/disk/by-uuid.
Now, I gather that USB flash drives and such don't always have UUIDs, but this one apparently does:
    # blkid /dev/sdc1
    /dev/sdc1: LABEL="Sansa c240" UUID="CC07-5165" TYPE="vfat"
And, as you can see, the partition is definitely visible, and I can mount it as /dev/sd*1, and copy files to it. It also has an entry under /dev/disk/by-id, just not under /dev/disk/by-uuid. Any ideas why that might be, or what I can do about it?
    TIA for any tips.

Sorry for the necrobumping..but I have the same problem on a headless server running the  2.6.31 kernel, and not just with  flashdrives  but any usb storage: I see the uuid with blkid, yet they don't show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid/ . I can mount them with /dev/sd[a-z][0-9] but I rather use uuids in my mount-scripts. Is there any solution other than making the symlinks in /dev/desk/by-uuid myself?
    <edit>
    solved it myself:
The cause was 'OPTIONS="last_rule"' that I added to some lines in a udev-rule file I made in /udev/rules.d/ for automounting usb drives based on the ones here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ude … SB_devices. After removing those parts both my udev rule gets executed and the links in /dev/disk/by-uuid are created when inserting a usb drive.
    </edit?

  • "Slave" drive not appearing

So I just tossed a couple new HD's in my G4. The drives are:
1 - 120GB hooked up to G4's built in IDE cable
1 - 320 GB Drive hooked up to IDE Controller card as primary/master drive
and both show up w/ no issues on boot
BUT then here's where it gets interesting:
I have the other two drives hooked up to the second slot on the IDE Controller card on one cable as Master/Slave. I have checked jumpers, cable position, etc over and over again, but no matter what I do, only one or the other will appear on the desktop/disk utility/etc. I've gone so far as to switch up the jumpers to every conceivable permutation as well.
In the end it just seems if I set one drive to master and the other to slave, the slave drive will never appear.
It is most definitely not a power issue, and right now I'm pretty much stumped.
    Any help appreciated
    cheers

IBM ide 12 gig drive (master) IDE 1
western didgital 80 gig drive (slave) IDE1
Hello, I am not sure if you are aware of this but,
New hard drives transfer data faster than the old drives. Because over the years the speeds have increased, motherboards can run hard drives at different speeds, known as ULTRA DMA MODES / ATA MODES.
EG, Seagate barracuda 80GB ATA 133
When plugging a hard drive to the motherboard the BIOS can detect the hard drive speed, in effect this sets the hard drive transfer rate on the IDE cable.
    So ATA MODE 6 = DMA133.
Your new hard drive is capable of this.
Now by plugging an older hard drive on the same IDE cable, you are making the cable run with 2 different speeds, as the 12Gb drive is probably UDMA 33, MODE 2.
This can cause interference within the IDE cable and in extreme cases cause data loss. Sometimes the Faster drive will be set to match the slower DMA MODE.
An 80pin IDE cable reduces the interference but you still may get problems especially with the difference in Hard drives. (very old and very new).
So you should remove the OLD 12Gb drive and leave the new drive on the Cable IDE1. If you buy another drive, which is UDMA 133 then you can put it on the same cable, IDE1.
That is also why everyone/manufacturers state run CD drives on a different cable than hard drives, because CD drive run at DMA mode 2.

  • Drive Not Appearing on Desktop or in Finder

    Hi,
My computer has been off for a week while I've been off on vacation and I just turned it on for the first time today only to find that my external Seagate backup drive doesn't appear on my desktop or in the finder. However, when I open Time Machine settings or when I plug the USB cord in to the computer, the drive spins and seems like it wants to connect to the computer, but still doesn't show up. Any help or solution is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • Internal Hard Drive Not Appearing in Finder

I just had to do a reboot of my Mac Pro as Final Cut Pro kept locking up and when the computer was back up, one of my Western Digital 2 TB internal hard drives is missing!  When I restart, I got a message saying something like the disc inserted cannot be used.  It had 3 options and the first time I hit eject thinking it was talking about a DVD, then when I rebooted again I hit the details button and it pulled up Disk Utility.  I can see my HD in the menu but when I click on it is says unmounted.  The other 2 TB WD Hard drive is working fine.  Do I need to click on the verify disk or repair disk button?  What should I do? I have quite a bit of video footage on this drive that is missing so I'm super worried I will lose the videos!

    etcetera25 wrote:
The drive is a goner otherwise though.  Since I was solely using this failed drive recently, I may have just worn it out, which is too bad, even though I worked with an identical 2 TB WD internal drive earlier this year and never had problems with that one.
Drives shouldn't just wear out from use, at least not in a reasonable number of years. They are designed for that. Drives however do fail. However, that drive is more likely to be badly corrupted than it is to be mechanically failing. When you are finished grabbing the data off it, use Disk Utility to zero it out. If it can successfully be zeroed out then it is most likely fine to continue to use.

  • External hard drives not appearing on Desktop

I have three external hard drives, none of which are showing up on my Desktop. All three drives are mounted, and I can navigate to them through the sidebar in Finder windows, and the contents of the drives are all fine and intact. In Finder preferences under "Show these items on the desktop", "External disks" is ticked. I've tried unmounting the drives using Disk Utility, then mounting them again, but they still don't appear. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Create a new admin user account, log into it, setup Finder's prefs to show all HDs, and see if the issue persists.

  • Hard drive not appearing in disk utility

My hard drive on my MacBook crashed and I purchased a new one.
I attempted to install the Mac OSX on the new hard drive, but have run into a couple issues.
First issue I ran into was that I found out I had the wrong Install DVDs. I was able to format the hard drive with these disks so I got to step one successfully anyway.
I then did find the correct Install DVDs, but now the Hard Drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility.
Any ideas how I can locate the hard drive?
(Sorry, but I can't obtain the info about the MacBook through the Installer (greyed out). It was purchased around 2007 or 2008. The Install DVDs have 2007 on them.)
